Lovin Oven Cakery

I have ordered many cakes from them, they always look good but taste ok. But last week, i bought their macarons. I’ve never had anything so stale!!! I felt bad for my students when they ate them…

If you have ever had a true pastry from a Viennese or an Austrian bakery Lovin Oven does not hold a candle. All their pastries are sweet as hell or with little flavor. Every item I have ever eaten here was lacking in a variety of ways. I do not recommend.

I ordered a cake for my mom’s 90^th birthday–
and from the first phone call, to the sheer beauty of the cake, and the 12 matching cupcakes that were added to the order–
Everything was absolutely beautiful, and tasty, beyond belief!
The staff was superb, the cake and cupcakes were beyond my wildest expectations (seriously),
and, MOST importantly –my mom absolutely loved it all.
Thank you, SO much.
You made her birthday that much more special.

Absolute best. If you are into cakes and desserts and do not go here you are doing yourself a disservice. I have gotten a speeding ticket trying to get here before it closes. It is that good — They have an endless array of deserts and cakes by the slice. I recently tried the Heath cake – it was so good I can’t stop thinking about it. Go here. Now.

Our wedding cake from Lovin Oven was beautiful and delicious. I’m obsessed with peanut butter, and even though it wasn’t a listed option, they made a peanut butter filling for a layer of our wedding cake. The cake was gorgeous and exactly what we wanted. Lovin Oven gives you a free replica of your top layer for your one year anniversary, which I love. We wanted to eat our cake because we knew how good it would be. So it’s so great we can have our cake and eat it too :)
I was also pleased with the price of our cake. I was expecting to pay far more than we did. All in all it was an awesome experience!

First off, I should say that I, along with several family members, am a repeat customer several times a year to Lovin Oven. Their products are superb and delicious — and although the service is just «ok» — after my latest experience I can no longer look the other way, and will be choosing alternate bakeries for all my sweet treat occasions.
Lovin Oven created our wedding cake 2 years ago and it was amazing. For our Wedding Anniversary a few weeks ago, I contacted Lovin Oven to set up an order for a replica of the top tier of our wedding cake as a surprise for my husband. I spoke with Erica at the Bridal Department who was very helpful. She pulled up my account, saw that the image of the cake was on file, and assured me that I could pick it up the day before our anniversary, at the Libertyville location.
A day before the agreed on pick-​up, I phoned Lovin Oven to pre-​pay for the cake, as my sister would be picking it up instead of me. It took about 20 minutes for anyone to even know what order I was talking about, since no one could find it in their system. Finally, I was told to call Erica again, in Round Lake, since she had placed the order and Libertyville didn’t have a way of tracking «bridal» orders. A little bit frustrating since I had been on hold for 20 minutes… but fine. I called Round Lake and Erica told me that there was no record of my order, and that orders needed to be placed 1 week in advance for proper execution (I had placed my order 3 weeks in advance). Once Erica pulled up my account and saw the image of the cake, she knew right away that we had talked previously and recognized that the order had somehow not gotten placed on their end. This was extremely disappointing in that I had no cake for our Anniversary the next day, as she expressed there would be no time to bake the cake to the exact specifications we had agreed to.
I’m always one for understanding that mistakes happen, but being in a service industry myself, I recognize it is not the mistake that leaves an impression — rather — it’s how the business remedies the mistake that leaves the last impression with a customer. Lovin Oven failed miserably in this category in that the only thing that they could offer me was a smaller cake that would be «similar,» but not identical to our top tier wedding cake. The kicker? I was expected to pay full price for a smaller cake, which was not per my order, from the «leftover» supply they had! What would the point be of ordering a wedding cake replica if it’s not a replica? Not to mention the fact that my order was completely forgotten about, and by this time, I had spent about 40 minutes on the phone trying to get this issue resolved. I certainly did not expect any product free of charge — however — I do expect that my time is worth something, and being told I was expected to pay full price for a «substitute» that they’d throw together at the last minute, for such a personal and intimate occasion — was truly an unacceptable way to handle this mishap.
Aside from not being able to carry out the surprise dessert I had hoped for (my husband absolutely loved our wedding cake), perhaps the most disappointing part of this whole scenario was the Manager reporting back to me that she had called the owner of Lovin Oven, and the owner had basically said that there was not further discounting that could be given, nor anything further that they could do, since their decorators were about to leave for the day. There was also not one mention of an apology for the mistake. As a customer, hearing this from the business owner really sealed my commitment to find another local bakery to do business with, and where my loyalty would be better valued. I really appreciated the story behind Lovin Oven as starting small and growing into a moderately sized and successful business, but frankly — I think you have gotten too big for your britches Lovin Oven — shame on you!

Our wedding cake with Lovin’ Oven Cakery was included in the cost with our venue (The Westin Chicago Northwest in Itasca). Seeing as our wedding venue and home are located in the NW suburbs, we weren’t too crazy about having to drive all the way to Round Lake Beach but we are definitely pleased with the cake and service at Lovin’ Oven.
We worked directly with Lindsay for our tasting and cake creation. My husband and I knew that we wanted a blue velvet cake to match our wedding colors which were navy and gold. While blue velvet wasn’t a listed cake option, Lindsay assured me that they could do that at no additional charge. We also kept our cake style and décor very simple; we were in and out of the tasting in approximately 20 minutes! (It probably helped that my husband doesn’t have a sweet tooth, I just ate all the samples and we had a specific cake in mind going into the appointment.;) Ha!)
Our wedding cake was fabulous. Simple, beautiful and it totally surprised the guests. Blue cake? What?! Many kept guessing on flavor, etc. Overall, it was a huge hit… my father-​in-​law was swiping slices from other people’s tables because he liked it so much.
I can’t wait to eat it again on our 1 year anniversary and while the drive was a little obnoxious — we were VERY pleased with our sweet treat on our big day! We would recommend Lovin’ Oven to anyone and I’ll be sure to upload pics of our cake as soon as I get them!

Best bakery around! We order all of our cakes and pastries from here and everyone always raves about them. Only downside is they’re closed the first week of July, so my poor husband never gets a birthday cake from here.

Lovin’ Oven made our wedding cake and did an incredible job. Their artistry cannot be matched! The cake was delicious and beautiful!

Our wedding cake was included in the cost with our venue, 31 North Banquets & Catering in McHenry. Lindsay was our point of contact with Lovin’ Oven, and helped us search for cake designs. The website has several amazing pictures, and they are flexible with colors, frostings, fillings, design alterations.
Since we live out of state, the cakery offered for extended family members in the area to come in for the cake tasting. Lovin’ Oven took care of delivery and setup. The cake looked great at our wedding! My only criticism is that the cake tasted a little dry. We had chocolate cake, strawberry jam filling, and butter cream frosting. Perhaps a creamier filling would have made the cake taste better. Overall, I would recommend Lovin’ Oven based on good service and flexibility.

Been going to lovin oven for years! Bought several cakes and even got my bridal shower cake here last year. I would have gotten my wedding cake here as well but we ended up having a destination wedding. I love their bakery items including their cookies!!! Very good bakery and only go to the original location in round lake!

I was in the area and decided to indulge my sweet tooth. Found this place on Unilocal.
They had so many different pastries! I couldn’t decide what to get. I ended up getting a maple bacon donut, cinnamon roll donut (this was amazing… the best cinnamon roll donut by far), a cheese stick (basically a pastry filled with cream cheese filling) and red velvet cookies.
The red velvet cookies were more like chocolate cookies (I guess it’s hard to make them not chocolatey since red velvet cake is made with some cocoa powder) but soft and chewy like I prefer my cookies.
Everything I had was great and I want to go back just for the cinnamon roll donuts!

What a joke, stopped in tocheck this place out. Every thing looked good. I ordered a Apple fritter.
It did not taste like apples, and it was stale. i will not come back. Oh there bitter cookies 16.00 a pound WOW. I have Had better stuff from the corner gas station.

I really enjoyed the welcoming environment, and the girls working the counter were very helpful for choosing the best and most delicious pastries.
Always wonderful smells whenever I enter.

My Unilocal friends Christina S. and Kevin N. have both reviewed this location and gave this place 5 stars. My wife and I decided to give them a try based on their reviews.
We have tried the Lovin Oven in Libertyville and I wasn’t too impressed. This location appears to be the main Lovin Oven where all of the pastries are made. It’s located in a corner of a shopping /​strip mall. When you enter the shop you need to grab a number right away unless you can’t decide on what you want and need time to look over everything.
I had a taste for something lemony but the only thing they had was a muffin. So I went with cake chocolate donut that was pretty good.
I liked this location better than the one in Libertyville based on the pastry was fresher. So for now I will give them 3.5 — 4 stars.

You might never find this bakery, er, ‘cakery’ situated in a strip mall in Round Lake Beach. I’d heard of it by word of mouth as the best bakery in the Gurnee/​Round Lake area. As far as I’ve experienced, it’s as good as it gets. This is a classic bakery which serves everything from cookies to wedding cakes.
When I was a kiddo, my favorite cake was called an ‘atomic cake’. This is a triple decker cake, with one layer of yellow, one of banana and one of chocolate. Between the layers is a layer of fresh banana filling, fresh strawberry filling, a layer of chocolate ganache on top, with a whipped cream frosting. In my humble opinion, this cake is THE BOMB! Well, they do these cakes at Lovin Oven. I ordered two for my recent birthday celebration and I got raves from my friends and family. Super high quality and not crazy overpriced either, I can’t recommend this enough.
However, they have plenty of premade cakes available to take in multiple sizes and shapes. Since it’s Oscar season and Mardi Gras time, there were specialty cakes in the shape of an Oscar stauette and Mardi Gras clown cakes with the perfect green, purple and yellow decorations.
When I was there, they had a wedding cake tasting going on in the back room where the customers were tasting cakes and fillings to create the perfect confection for their special occasion.
It doesn’t hurt that they serve donuts and pastries, either. I had an éclair as an indulgence and it was the gooeyist, most chocolatey custard filled éclair I’ve ever had. I didn’t try the Opera tortes or the King Cakes with a baked in plastic baby for Mardi Gras, but I want to go back. My waistline says, «No!» however.
Plenty of people were stopping in to pick up donuts for work as well. The in house coffee is Chicago’s own special Intelligentsia which makes the baked goods even better. Run to this place for your next occasion! It’s awesome!
