Madeleine Bakery & Cafe

Stopped in here a few times (sometimes just for a beverage) on a weekday morning since I commute into the city and they are conveniently across the street from the train station. I walk in and there are only a few items in the large display case which I thought was odd. So I just asked for a croissant to go with butter and jam. The girl behind the counter takes the croissant and gives it to the guy in the back who in turn, cuts it in half, slathers on tons of butter and jam. WTF? I wanted my butter and jam on the side. Who puts tons of butter on a croissant? And the croissant itself tasted so odd that I threw it out. The people that work there are grumpy and this place seems shady. Cannot believe they are even in business. Seriously this place gives you a weird vibe and now I know why none of the other commuters go there!

Went here a few months ago on a Saturday afternoon for a sugar fix. I should’ve known a «bakery» with only a few desserts on display from lack of production was a huge red flag. But one of the few things I saw was a big piece of red velvet cake. Got it to go and dug into it immediately at home, only to discover it was rock hard and way beyond stale. Couldn’t believe it was even sold to me, that’s how stale it was. Totally shady and unsafe — stay away!!!

I was completely disillusioned when I walked into this place. I read a food blog in the local paper about offering over a dozen different madeleine cookies, I only saw one.
This place is overrated, with cookies and cakes that look similar to the local supermarket. I left empty handed.

These guys came to my office through Fooda – if you’re unfamiliar, they’re a startup that works with restaurants to more or less cater to your office. A restaurant provides a selected menu to Fooda and then brings that food in on a specified day of of the week, when employees are free to buy what they want. I work in Midtown Manhattan.
Unfortunately the menu they provided didn’t actually match the food they brought – they advertised a combo special of half a sandwich and a side salad but didn’t actually have it available. I didn’t take time to make a note, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t bring the whole range of sandwiches offered, and completely ignored the (tasty-​looking!) salad menu in exchange for a completely boring garden salad or a caesar salad.
I picked out the grilled chicken sandwich (because I’m dumb and didn’t clue in that maybe they don’t have their act together), which came on a perfectly average soft roll with a hunk of chicken, questionably fresh mozzarella, and a balsamic glaze. It was SUPPOSED to include broccoli rabe but that didn’t happen. It did come with a madeleine cookie, which was actually really good but not worth the disappointment otherwise.
I’m not sure what they’re charging at the storefront, but the sandwich plus cookie was $ 9.00. It’s not the most I’ve ever spent on a sandwich, especially in Midtown, but I’m still disappointed. Hopefully the storefront is different, but if I ever see them on Fooda again I’m opting out.

Stopped in last week looking for some chili and got better.
I ordered the lunch special. A small cup of tomoatoe bean soup. Pretty good. Got it home 20 minutes later and was still hot.
Was not creamy or too rich. Was pretty good
Half a sandwich of tandoori chicken, arugula, and tzatziki sauce.
I am a sucker for tandoori and an even bigger sucker for arugula. Sold!
Total on lunch $ 7.00 plus tax. Sweeeeetttt

This place is truly amazing. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it. I had a grapefruit cupcake which was so delicious I had to try something else too. The coffee is good and the owner is sweet and generous. Def. Will be back.

Small bakery near Rutherford train station. Maybe around 4 — 5 seating table. I was looking for bakery to make birthday cake for my son’s 1^st birthday. Found this place on Unilocal and thought I will give it a try. 1^st time I went to this place I was surprised that they do not have much baked goods in showcase. I wanted to try their Madeleine, since it is their name, I though it will be good… It was OK, to me it was not sweet enough, but crunchy which I liked. Then I went again to order the cake. I asked for light blue, light green and light yellow decoration, but it was more like blue and green and no yellow. Cake was good, it was little burned on the top, whipped cream came off easily. If they cut off outer layer of the cake, it might be better. Syrup that they used on the cake contained little more liquor than I would like for that it is for kids birthday cake.

Ok so I purchased a deal from amazon local for a holiday cookie platter. Went to the web site and it looked good. Deal was $ 17. When I picked up the tray I was a bit surprised at how small it was. Remember the deal is supposed to be just that, a deal. So I wondered to myself what the real cost of the tray would have been had I not gotten the «deal» through amazon. But anyways I figured you get what you pay for right? I don’t mind paying premium for a good product. Sadly this was not the case.
I won’t lie and say that the cookies were bad or horrible or anything like that. They weren’t. But I can’t in all honesty say they were really great or pretty good. They were just ok. I have had better tasting cookies from a box or bag. Honestly Pepperidge Farms cookies were better. The chocolate chip ones were the best. I did enjoy those but the others were so so.
I didn’t see any bread in the case so I asked if they made bread. I was informed that no «we don’t make bread». Now folks I’ve been to more bakeries than I care to admit to but if you’re going to have the word bakery associated with your business then I would suggest you make bread. Man does not live by cookie or cupcake alone! Once I heard that no bread was available I made a mental note of that. I was shaking my head wondering how could you have a bakery and not make bread. Kind of like the deli that doesn’t make sandwiches!
In all fairness I will say the place looked clean and comfy. The proprietor was very pleasant. But I was sadly disappointed in the quality of the cookies I purchased and the fact that they didn’t make any bread.
With so many good, even great bakeries in northern NJ I can’t in good conscience recommend this place. I wish the owners all the success but I myself will not be a patron of this place.

5 STAR! Love this place… Whatever I have eaten so far… its out of the world! Chocolate mousse, macrons, cakes, pastries and what not! Love this place, will be back again soon!

Sights, to sounds, to savors– this place is completely worth it. I desperately needed madaleine cookies; I had promised i would bring them to an event, thinking they would be much easier to find. After some searching, the closest place to have them was Madaleine’s Café… over half an hour away. I had some free time but mostly didn’t want to soil my prestige reputation of sticking to my word. Once I walk in to the bakery, I first noticed that Chris Brown (my boy) was singing to me, and the wallpaper made me feel like I was at some swanky cupcake factory in NYC. What you will notice, though, is that the counter glass appears a bit empty. Just keep in mind that this bakery is about a year old. You will meet the very, very kind owner: she told me the story of how she worked for several chefs in Manhattan and now has started Madaleine’s Café. She got the name from her younger daughter, who was obsessed with the madaleine cookies she made her.
Anyways, to the food part… I obviously got madaleine’s, and I also got a NY cheesecake cupcake. It was to drool for. It actually had cheesecake crust on the bottom, some type of cake, and cheesecake icing. You can’t not eat it.
Give this place the credit and the customers it deserves!

I should preface this with the fact that I am a sleep-​deprived mom of a toddler who just started sleeping thru the night (Yay!) so I may not be as patient and forgiving as you. I was truly thrilled to find a new bakery/​breakfast spot nearby. My first bleary-​eyed visit I ordered an omelet and was asked if I wanted additional items on it and I said sure, I remember those items were never in the actual omelet, but that was fine. They don’t use glass ware for food, only eco friendly paper/​plastic. So, my plate got steamy on the bottom and when I lifted it up there was a wet spot in the shape of the plate on my vinylish table top. Also plastic stirs. It somehow takes away from the experience. Both my husband and I like some of the baked goods, although pricey, they are a nice treat once in a while. Coconut dream bars were a favorite and croissants were not bad. Other pastries fell flat, often times crumbly, dry, stale. Service: the owner always seems stressed and preoccupied. Being from India myself, my friends and I always find it amusing when we go to any Indian-​owned establishment and the service is top-​notch towards non-​Indians but visibly lacking and often times outright rude to fellow Indians. I certainly do not expect special treatment, but courtesy and even being pleasant (I’m really pushing it now, aren’t I?) would be nice. I always felt like I was intruding. I go to a place called Madeleine to be transported to a cozy French café and to relax. This is not that place. So the ICING on the CAKE was yesterday. I got the same «warm» treatment. We got the chicken salad which is savory with a hint of sweet and my boy loves it. I also got a spinach and ricotta pastry (fresh and good) and a chocolate chip pastry (dry and stale). We sat in a corner and ate. At one point I had to go ask for a spoon and she and her helper were both in the back so I tried to say excuse me and she saw me and said to the helper, quite loudly and irritated, «Can you go see what she wants?» How charming, thought I! Here comes the icing on the cake part, the cupcakes I got to go. I have eaten a lot of cupcakes and I used to have a home-​based gluten-​free bakery before I became a full-​time mom. I have also been to Paris, Belgium, NYC (hey, it’s up there with the rest) and shared a hug with Jacques Torres. I have my favorite cupcakeries (A’ La Cupcakes in Glen Rock rocks!(sorry) and so does Zoe’s in Teaneck) and French bakeries (St. Michel in Teaneck & Balthazar in Englewood). So, I got 2 raspberry cupcakes («made with fresh raspberries I was told condescendingly) and a champagne cupcake. I get home, the cake part is hard as rock. Maybe it is so cold out, they hardened up. I left them out on the counter. 2 hours later I felt the cake part again, still hard as can be. I tried to take a big bite (nobody was watching) but it was hard to just bite thru. Texture: dry, dense, Taste: bad refrigerator type stale. Frosting: stale taste, revolting. Grocery store cupcakes would have been like gold next to these. So I called them and the owner called me the next morning. She replied that I didn’t wait long enough, the cupcakes were fine, she and her staff personally ate all the cupcakes remaining to make sure they were all good (or were going to eat them, I did not quite understand, since they would have to accomplish that feat this very morning and it is only 10:30am now!) She kept insisting I must be the only one because nobody else has ever complained. I ask: When were they baked? Sunday night, she says and placed uncovered in her case on Mon morning. Come Wed afternoon, lucky me got to dig inato a stale cupcake. Anything made with butter is best stored in airtight bins until ready to display and also overnight. NOT kept in a refrigerated display uncovered for 3 days and who knows how much longer! Ask any reputable bakery how they store cupcakes and they will tell you in air-​tight containers overnight. They DO NOT sell their cupcakes full price after the 2^nd day, if at all! Is this even health code approved? Yuk! I tried to communicate I preferred not to argue, but thank you, I will come in for a refund. THIS takes the CAKE. When I mentioned her rude service, she said it was because I always ask for utensils when she already has told me they don’t have them and also because I present my amex to pay «every time» even though she has told me they don’t take that card. Excuuuuse me, I have only come in about 3 times, with a month or 2 between each visit because I leave so terribly depressed and after a month or 2, I feel strong enough to give it another chance. Can’t remember the last time I received such off-​putting service; maybe when I was in my 20s or maybe my teens, but now I am in my 40s and demand to be treated with some courtesy! I will be back– to get my refund. 2 stars because on other visits, when SHE was absent, my husband and I were both treated like valuable customers by the very warm, welcoming co-​owner, who I believe is the husband.

Was closed at dark at 4:30 on a Monday. Federal holiday or not, that’s early. Call ahead before you try this place.

Atmosphere: café/​bakery is spacious with many tables for four and a small couch seating area. You place your order at the counter. There is a bakery case which was mostly empty and then a small pastry counter with baby croissants, scones, cupcakes and fruit bars that look fresh made. There were also Madeleine cookies. It’s a quiet place with light music. They also have a small area of children’s toys and books. They have free wifi but you have to ask for a password.
Service: friendly and accommodating. We asked for a café au lait which he didn’t know but he tried to make it as we described it.
Food and drinks: we only tried a croissant but it was very good, somewhat flaky but also chewy with dense layers inside and a flaky top crust with some good browning. Café au lait was really a latte but heavier on the coffee. The double cappuccino was like a very heavy latte, almost undrinkable. The coffee is made with illy pods and it’s a smooth coffee. But the cappuccino was so heavy, rich and low on the coffee. And it was cold. They also have a very upscale tea. They have a juice case too with a varieties of sodas and juices to go. They have full breakfast and lunch menu with eggs, salad and sandwiches including cheeseburgers. Unfortunately, they were out of the red velvet cupcakes or I would have tried them. Call ahead if there is a particular thing you would like. They do not carry a big inventory

So happy to have found Madeleine’s! Had the chicken salad, which was obviously made with care and multiple ingredients — not smushed up chicken and mayo as in most deli’s. The chicken soup was phenomenal. And my son, who is a devotee of Buffalo Chicken anything, gave their BC sandwich a big thumbs up! I’m saving the chocolate croissants for later. The staff is wonderful, and the space is like an oasis of calm in the midst of the bustling traffic near the train station. Yes, parking can be an issue… just park in the Bank of America lot and walk over.

Great spot to stop for breakfast and amazing friendly service!

I have been here a couple of times and I have not been disappointed. Great food awesome coffee and the staff and owner make you feel at home. A place that must be visited. Baking done on premises and the owner is a french trained baker. Sitting here listening to some of the folks the have come, the compliments on the baked goods have not stopped.

Great muffins, great macaroons, nice service. I’ll be back!

I’ve tried a few different sandwiches and they’ve all been great! The cheesesteak was awesome and the Buffalo Chicken and Grilled Chicken was really good to. What I like best is you know you’re getting a fresh sandwich on great bread.

Friendly service, great food and priced just right. I just tried their buffalo style chicken breast on white bread it had a good amount of chicken and the bread was outstanding. They just open yesterday I recommend you to stop in and try it out for yourself.
