I don’t get it, the place is tiny, always over packed, long waits, the meat has little to no flavor and the bread is plain and tasteless. I also tried the zippy salad which had way too much mayo, I tossed my meal away.

Gill’s grinders continue to be the best. We go there whenever we are in Rutland. Though it gets packed during peak hours, it is worth the wait. The bread is phenomenal and the selections of toppings and meats is great. The homemade salads are terrific. I must try in central Vermont.

My 2nd time at this establishment. Good grinders here. In some places we call these type sandwiches subs or sub sandwiches. I liked the sub roll. A full selection of side dishes … Coleslaw, potato, macaroni salad like that. The selection is more sub shop than traditional deli. No rueben, lox and bagels. No table service, stand in line to order, 5 staffers making subs and the wait at 1:30 was 15 people long. The line moves and I found the patrons to be patient and in good spirt. We shuffled along in good company. We took our seats only after receiving our food and paying at the cashier. I had the Toasted turkey melt and chocolate milk. I recommend this place. Lot of food for small coin. Vermont atmosphere. Nice. Drink the milk it tastes fresh.

I have nothing more than to say but one of the best sub places of all time. Being from New Jersey we love our Subs, and to find a good sub place to go to instead of Subway Gill’s is the place. Although they do pile on the cabbage, their subs still have great flavor

Visiting Rutland while snowboarding at Killington and the reviews do not lie! Awesome sandwiches at great prices! We had the hot meats grinders with everything and it hit the spot. The salads(tuna macaroni and crab macaroni) we could have skipped — average but the main dish was great. Service was impeccable as well — friendly staff.

If you’re looking for a really nice sub sandwich, you will find it here. Every sandwich is made to order, and made right before you. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the sub rolls are excellent. While regional version of the deli sandwich vary, Gills provides a great version of what folks in New England call a «sub».

This is the BEST place to get a grinder. I was born and raised in the area and would always look forward to a Gill’s Grinder! I moved to Georgia 2 years ago and haven’t found a place as good as Gills and I don’t think I will! Every time I go to Vermont, I always get Gills! Yum!!!

If you want an excellent sub try the hot Italian with cabbage, tomato, onion, hot peppers and oil of course. In my mind a true sub and I crave one all the time. My Dad turned me on to this place over 30 years ago and is a place I have to go to anytime I am in Rutland! I find excuses to go to Rutland or through Rutland. I have never tried anything else, the hot hams are awesome and rolls are perfect!

Service without the Smile… The girls at this particular establishment are salty and rude AT best… Being away due to the military to come home to an establishment I consider to be the«Pride of Rutland«and find it’s been overwhelmed with Teenage girls that obviously don’t care for the job or take pride in knowing the fact people LOVE these Gill’s grinders… Honestly I suggest to take your business to The Sandwich Shoppe in down town as the people there are friendly and the sandwiches are amazing as well… This rating should be a 4.5 — 5 stars but due to the lack of enthusiasm in the workers and the overall lack of pride in customer service… But that’s because of the sandwiches… So if you want a great grinder without a hint of customer service go to Gill’s!!!

After 15 years of not living in VT I ALWAYS get a large hot Italian when I am in town — they still taste the same as when I was a kid. One of the top 5 things I love about Vermont. Just remember Cash only!

Gill’s uses good quality ingredients in their offerings but there is very little meat served in the sandwiches. You receive an average amount of vegetable toppings with a very thin layer of meat. I would not recommend the roast beef as it is consistently very dry. For a much better sandwich I would recommend«Maxie’s» in downtown Rutland.

Family’s favorite sandwich place by far! We always get the giant sandwich and have it cut in four pieces. Buy two feed four. Love the shredded cabbage! Everything fast, fresh and straight forward! We love roast beef and can never find great roast beef except here! They bake their own roast beef in house(no chemicals and preservatives) awesome!!! Don’t forget to bring cash! They don’t take credit cards or checks!

I really miss living in Rutland. If you are passing through, this is a must stop place. The staff do seem to get annoyed if you don’t know what you want, but these kids are worked pretty hard due to the volume of orders. If you know what you want, order ahead and avoid the wait. They don’t take credit cards!

I dream of Gill’s. These grinders are so tasty! First time I went the shredded cabbage topping instead of lettuce kinda through me for a loop but, man oh man does it work and is so tasty. But, your grinder toppings are ruled by Gill’s so be warned. But, that doesn’t bother me one bit. I love this place and must go here every time I am in Rutland.

One of the better sub shops in Rutland. BUT Let me Explain my 3-Star rating. I’ve called in numerous times to place orders here, and I see what seems to be about 30 employees. I had a phone order for 1 sub and it took 1.5hrs. With so many employees standing around, you’d think a sub could be made in a millisecond… not the case. That just seems a little ridiculous to me for 1 Small Sub. The staff could also be a little bit nicer. It seems when you order a sub that the person making the sub is extremely annoyed. I feel like if you make subs all day long, you shouldn’t be annoyed at the next customer asking for a sub. Also they do not take Debit/Credit cards which is a huge turn off.(I do understand the ridiculous fees associated with Card Swipe Machines) I love the subs, but when I decide to get one from Gills, I have to go to the ATM first(which I know sounds as tho I’m lazy) which is an extra chore itself because there’s no ATM in Gills. Pros: Great Subs, Great Long Standing Local Business, Reasonably Priced Cons: Quicker to order in person than to phone in an order, Doesn’t Accept Cards, No ATM Access

Don’t normally review sandwich places, but this place is off the charts. Bread really makes a true great grinder and they deliver in that category. This place is old school and I’ve never left unhappy. I don’t need to tell the locals how good this place is, but if you are heading up to VT from out of town and are remotely close to this place… stop. I promise you won’t be disappointed. My personal favorite is the roast beef(extra rare) with a ton of onions. Cash only.

For under 7 bucks you’ll get breakfast, lunch and dinner in the form of a Hot Meat(as in spicy, not temperature) grinder, large. The meats aren’t that spicy and neither are the peppers(banana) which are only allowed on this and a couple of other subs.(Gill is a tough taskmaster.) I requested spiced oil, a splash of vinegar and some onion in addition to the automatic toppings and was good to go. The sandwich was about 8 inches high before the prepper compressed it and rolled it up to go. A fun challenge to eat in the car while driving east up into the mountains on 4. It’s true they use cabbage instead of lettuce but there is so much stuff you won’t notice and lettuce is available if you ask for it. A solid sub and great value. These folks really do have a thing for cabbage… cole slaw is available in both shredded and chopped versions. Something to check out on my definite return trip.
