HPI has been around for a very long time. They have an enormous following of people. I’ve been to a few get togethers and even some investigations. Most of the people within their circle are very nice and approachable. Paul is probably my favorite of them all, although I don’t share the same tactics in ghost hunting with him. He is a fantastic writer, and is very knowledgable of the spirit world. Shannon McCabe, founder of HPI. I have very little to say about her, granted what they do is selfless in a way. Helping people with spirits yada yada. There are several groups in
Sacramento that do the same thing, so it’s not uncommon to not charge for their services. Let me say this, people ghost hunt for their own personal needs and or wants. Helping people is really just a bonus for them.
My experience with HPI was very frustrating. My first investigation with them was entertaining to say the least. It was more like an introduction on what not to do. First of all their were way too many people there for a tiny 2 bedroom apartment. Their had to have been 8 – 10 people their including me. They had 0 camcorders filming. They had brought two pieces of equipment, a digital recorder and a standard digital camera. Granted the digital recorder is by far my favorite in terms of getting evidence, it seemed very novice to only have those two things. Second, they had everyone investigating at the same time. So think about it, you’ve got 10 people probably 3 to a room all investigating at the same time. That’s a lot of noise disturbance. If we heard something, like a knock or a voice. How would we have known it wasn’t somebody in the other room. I will say we had one experience that was pretty amazing and unexplainable. But that’s it. I had placed my digital recorder in the bathroom because I figured since no one was going to investigate the bathroom. If a spirit wanted to hide somewhere. That’d be the best place for it. Well I was right, I had some 30 something really solid evp’s. A male spirit saying Get Out to say a few. He was very talkative and very pissed lol. This spirit did like the resident at all.
When they had finished, they said we would hear from them in a few days with their finds.
I was new to ghost hunting, this was my first investigation experience. I was ecstatic when I went through my recording and found all these crystal clear evp’s. I posted them on their website eager to get feedback. I was not pleased with the reply, Shannon McCabe deleted every single one of them and said that they were nothing. She explained that she had been doing this a long time and that what I was hearing was nothing. She couldn’t give me a solid answer, other than it was nothing and good try. Well I’m not stupid, nothing is nothing and voices are voices. The bathroom door was closed, no one had entered that bathroom the entire investigation, what I was hearing were male whispers. A male voice that I did not recognize. Ghost hunters don’t whisper, Why? Because most evp’s sound like whispers. You don’t want to potentially destroy evp’s because your using whispers as communication. I agree that the walls were thin, but they weren’t thin enough for a whisper to travel through them. She made me feel like a complete idiot. I was not pleased. It took them close to 3 weeks to get me the evidence they supposedly had, one of which was a picture taken of the group after the investigation that had an orb is what they said. Most likely it was dust or something reflecting off the light. I hardly count that as evidence. Then they sent me two terrible evp’s. Both of which weren’t actually from that investigation. They were actually from another completely different investigation all together. So not only did they blow off what I had to offer, but they actually didn’t do a god damn thing for the evidence. I doubt they even bothered listening to their recordings. Basically a complete waste of time.
I did one more investigation with them, this one was better in terms of ghost hunting. But once again, very little in terms of equipment. Too many people, they were late and did not apologize. We had some amazing experiences, but once again when it came to evidence. They had absolutely 0 to present. I had some 15 evp’s. Really good ones too. They had nothing. I had had it with them at this point.
I tried one last time to speak with Shannon about my experiences with the group and that I wanted solid answers on why my evidence wasn’t good enough. She blew me off and unfortunately for me, HPI is not a drama free group. I started my own group only to be badgered, and ridiculed by Shannon. Simply because a few people in her group did not agree with her, and moved on with me to start our own group. She felt that I was some kind of threat to her somehow. She caused so much drama that the group only lasted a few months. Luckily I met a fantastic couple that I’m still friends with to this day.
HPI is lazy, rude and unproffesional. Avoid them.

I went to there free meeting at the Sac Library where we saw pictures, listened to crystal clear E.V.P. s and were entertained by Shannon and Paul’s stories. I went to their scouting mission to search for ghosts in Sonoma and for fifteen bucks I had a great time. What I wanted to get across is these people are selfless friendly people who actually help people get rid of spirits in their house’s for free. Please support them by going on scouting missions or just visit there website. When I went on the scouting mission I got orb pictures, I heard what I believe a spirit growling at an insane aslyum, and got a wealth of information from Paul Roberts on how to search for ghosts.
