Still its hard have to believe that they are closed. I’ve been going there since I was kid. I am 51 now. So does anyone know what are the owners are doing now or keep in contact with them? My favorite was the Sweet n Sour and Chinese Greens Soup.

I’d have to agree with Stephanie G.,. .. I do feel like I’m writing Hong Kong Café’s obituary. .. I first discovered this ‘good, fast, and cheap eats’ place about 20 years ago and over the years have thoroughly enjoyed the varieties of fare. Since moving to Midtown about 6 years ago HKC was a fav place to go, grab so good eats and easily within walking distance. So my heart sank when I pulled into HKC’s parking lot a few months ago and discovered HKC was no more! I’ll truly miss this place, but thank goodness June’s Café isn’t far away and even closer to walk to and grab a quick bite to eat every now and then!

This feels like writing an obituary, is it acceptable to Unilocal a place that is now closed :/ Han(sp?) has been serving my family up until their last Saturday. I’ve grown up on the same two noodle dishes — Tomato Curry Beef Chow Mein and Beef Chow Fun. HKC set the standard that I judge all other Beef Chow Fun’s against, very few have yet to compare. It seem so unimportant to talk about their food anymore — but their legacy for over a couple decades(that’s all I’ve been alive). Many a family conversations, laughter, and full bellies have been had here. Quaint, yet the feeling of home. I think the best part about this is that for over 20 years my family has been coming, Han continues to my mom«Sonny’s(my dad) wife,» which still annoys her to this day. Hong Kong Café, you will truly be missed!

Have been coming to HKC since 1978 and it has always been consistently good until recently. The last couple times I’ve gone there the food was served lukewarm. The last time there was a customer that had just finished about ¼ of his chowmein and left. About 2 minutes later, the waitress brought my combination plate with chowmein on it that was almost cold. Hmmm, I wonder… The place is old and dirty and really needs updating and perhaps a change of attitude on the part of the owners.

The restaurant is not busy for a reason– their competitors along Broadway serve much better food than they do. Twice is enough.

The café has a roomy diner feel to it, with a simple and clean interior. The staff is efficient and unobtrusive, with a casual friendliness that puts you at ease. The food here is well-executed; while the dishes don’t have a great variety of ingredients in them, everything contained is cooked just right. Vegetables, meats, and noodles are at the right texture with clean, simple flavors. Perhaps the only drawback is that the dishes don’t have a great variety of spicing, so you really just taste the component meats and veggies without any interesting herbs or flavors to make the dishes truly memorable. Portion sizes are pleasantly generous. Pricing is very reasonable as well, although it is cash-only. While the food is not so spectacular that I would drive out of my way for it, I’d be very content to have a casual meal here if I am in the area.

Had dinner here with my in-laws en route to Lake Tahoe, and had a great meal. Some background — My in-laws are first– and second-generation Chinese Americans. My wife and I grew up in the Bay Area and are very experienced Cantonese diners. We ordered items that would probably only appeal to those who like authentic, family-style Cantonese cuisine. We did not try any Americanized Chinese dishes, but other diners seemed to be very happy. I found the food to be excellent. We had bitter melon with beef(not on the menu), boiled chicken(with a wonderful ginger, green onion and salt dipping sauce), ham yee yuke(salted fish pork hash), kow yuke(side pork), and Chinese short beans(also not on the menu). Each dish was well-prepared, fresh, and generous. The off-menu dishes were recommended by the waiter. The food was at least as good as the best Cantonese dishes we’ve had in the Bay Area. The service was excellent. The waiter honestly said that some dishes that we were going to order weren’t great, and suggested alternatives. He also suggested an upgrade to a dish for a slight up charge, which turned out to be a good call. The waiter changed our plates regularly, and kept our water and tea refreshed. The entire bill for our group of 5 came out to $ 65 with tax and tip(and we had lots of leftovers). Warning — cash only! I would heartedly recommend this restaurant for locals and for travelers going through Sacramento. The restaurant has been around since 1962, and I remember going there as a kid in the 70’s. It still has an old-time look, but it’s clean, air-conditioned, and the bathrooms are recently updated. It was wonderful to find it unchanged after all these years. A real treasure.

This place looks like a really old diner but they have changed it to a chinese restaurant. I wouldn’t really call it a café. My sister and I came here today after I got off a review session at school ’cause she was really craving chinese food. We go wonton soup, fried rice, and chow mein. Out of the three, I liked the chow mein but it could’ve used more soy sauce. I did like the soup of the wonton, not so much of the dumplings or meat in it. The fried rice was far from amazing, it didn’t really have much flavor and the beef was too salty. The workers or owners here are really cute. the place is super old fashion looking that even their cashier is old fashion! They just counted the money in their head, lol. Sucks that they don’t have ATM, so I had to run back to the car and get my wallet to pay in cash.

I’ve been coming here since I can remember with my mom. I am now 19 and having a child of my own and definitely plan on taking him. This place has the friendliest waiters in Sacramento. The little old man is always delighted to see my family walk in and the girl has great memory, always bringing me Hot Chili Sauce when the food arrives after me asking for it on a past visit. The old man behind the counter can be a bit rude at first glance but he’s running a business so it’s understandable. The Fried Prawns are the best especially with their hot mustard. The egg soup that accompanies the combination for one is the best way to start off a meal. The chow mein is perfect along with their great pork fried rice. I agree that they could be more generous with the Sweet and Sour Pork since it’s so good. The hot tea is delicious and can cure any cold. Broccoli beef is some of the best I’ve had. The sauce is what makes it so good. My son will make it five generations of my family that’s been going here and I don’t see any reason why it will stop with him. Remember to bring your cash, otherwise they’ll send you hiking down the street to Golden 1.

It’s like a Chinese Denny’s — patrons and all! I ordered the Combination for One, which came with the most delicious sweet and sour pork(but could have come with more chunks of meat) a generous pile of absolutely delicious pork chow mein, a good amount of tasty fried rice and a bowl of «okay» egg flower soup. I split an order of egg rolls with my dining companion who agreed that although good, they were a bit on the oily side — but I like the fact that the hot mustard(which I’ve found elsewhere before) is the best hot mustard anywhere — I need to find out what brand they use. They brought out hot tea, too. Another very welcome part of the Hong Kong Café experience. I think I’ll stop in there more often now that I know they’ve got the most delicious chow mein. It’s got perfect noodles, fresh crisp vegetables, crisp sprouts and the pork is cut fresh on top — it’s just heaven for those like myself who really love a good chow mein. The quality is in the recipes and the preparation which is excellent! Highly recommended for fans of Chinese; you’ve just got to find your own favorite dishes… I’m sure they’ve got favorites for everyone.

I went back to Hong Kong Café for the third time. This experience was entirely different. I’m removing the first round of praise from my earlier review because I learned they do not procure their chicken from New American Poultry. It is factory farmed and not free range — as it was confirmed by two people. WEWERELIEDTO! Additionally, we ordered the hot and sour soup. Nowhere in the menu did it mention it was going to be loaded with pieces of factory farmed pork. When it was brought to us, it was inedible due to the fact that I cannot and will not eat the meat of mistreated and abused animals. To punish them for telling me a lie, the would deserve two or less stars in this update. However, doing so would be pointless. This is clearly not the restaurant I once thought it was. I will no longer patronize them.

This is the greatest old-school Chinese place you’ll ever find. It’s been in the same family for generations, and the quality is much higher than its modest(ok, tacky) environment would indicate. But you gotta love the wagon wheel chandeliers and the naugahyde benches. Seriously, though, the egg foo young and the wonton soup are just the best. Plus, it never changes — the same waiters from my college days are still there. Just go and get over yourselves, all you ambience snobs… :)

If you like Panda Express style american chinese food then this is the place for you, but if you were looking for the real deal holyfield like a café you’d find in HK then you’ll be disappointed. Just look at the pictures if you don’t believe me. For a ‘real’ HK café I recommend Yummy Guide on Freeport.

This is a place that I have been eating at since I was a little kid. As other reviewers have mentioned… nothing has changed including the excellent food and quality service. It is a family style Chinese food restaurant with everything that you could possibly want on the menu. My favorites are chow fun noodles, egg foo young, and the peanut duck! If you are ever feeling under the weather… go for the one-ton soup! It is a cure all! Honestly it would be hard to go wrong with anything that you ordered though. Hong Kong can be very accommodating for large groups so give them a thought the next time you have a large group in town hungry for Chinese.

My dad used to go to Hong Kong Café when he was a kid, and he says it’s exactly the same now as it was then. I used to go here all the time when I worked at the Animal Care & Control, since it was on the way home, and it really is awesome. Chinese diners are a relic of the past that are hard to find these days. These guys have cheap drinks and cheap food for the amount you get. BEST egg foo young I’ve ever had. Their food is always fresh and the service is always friendly. Highly recommended.

LOOKSCLOSED, BUTIT’S NOT. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. The awnings are always pulled down, so it looks closed most of the time. If it weren’t for the one or two cars in the parking lot, you’d think nobody was inside. Once you duck under the low-hanging awnings, you’ll see there is in fact an open sign. When you first walk in, the man behind the counter will greet you and ask you how many people are with you. The tables aren’t fancy. Just ordinary café tables. The two servers have been there as long as I can remember. And the ketchup bottles have been missing their labels for years. They’re probably older than you. Actually, everything in the place is probably older than your mom.(oh! your MOM!) My family has gone to Hong Kong Café for several generations. My mother remembered going there as a child and remembers the current owner as the little boy that sat behind the counter while his parents ran the place. The old men are nice and helpful. And except for the lunchhour, when tons of downtown workers flood the place, it’s almost never busy. The food is excellent. It’s the place that got me hooked on fried prawns and pork fried rice. It’s all I will ever eat here. And it will be the standard I will use to rate any other chinese restaurant. Five stars because it is not fancy at all. It’s a hole-in-the-wall type of place. That’s a good thing in this case.
