Sacramento Downtown Plaza

The downtown plaza is clearly a shadow of its former self. A combination of poor management and retailers inability to compete with the internet contributed to the mall’s decline.
The few shops remaining are Macy’s, Century Theaters, and 24 Hour Fitness. No more restaurants in the food court and the public restrooms are boarded up. A silver lining in all of this is Century Theaters are still playing the latest Hollywood blockbusters such as 007 Spectre and Creed, and Macy’s are drawing in customers during the holiday season. Macy’s offers free Wi-​Fi and you don’t even have to go inside the store and buy anything; you can stand a few feet outside of the store and use your Android to connect to the internet. No password or purchase required. I know, because I do this all the time whenever I’m in the downtown plaza.
Free Wi-​Fi and Apollo Creed. What more could a man possibly want?

Great Downtown Area. Everything is within walking/​biking distance. From dining to any fine local restaurants, to going to a club, watching a flick at the movies by the outdoorsy mall, people watch, taking a tour at the Capitol, you name it… and theres a Gym nearby too if you feel the need to let off some daily stressors in your life, Unilocal ‘24Hours Fitness’. Your welcome.
Sacramento Downtown is a very diverse place to be in, and less than 2 miles away, you have the Good O’ Old Sacramento to take a stroll in, and off course theres hella restaurants to eat within Old Sacramento Downtown and lots of souvenir shops nearby as well.
Words of advice, finding parking in Old Sac can be a little chaotic, parking garage can reach its maximum peek on varying seasons/​weekends. But glad theres several parking garages available within the Sacramento Downtown Area…
But when the ‘New Arena’ is done being built, expect the fares for places to park to skyrocket like San Francisco. Eeeeeeeeeek! And traffic is going to be a grid lock when theres a Home Basketball Game/​Concerts/​Various Entertainment within the «Golden 1 Center Arena», and possible graduation day (s) at the month of June.
Other than that, dont let that deter you for rating such a low rate on Sacramento Downtown Plaza just because theres traffic. Sacramento Downtown Plaza has a lot to offer to the whole public.
Learn to carpool and/​or download Über/​LYFT a ridesharing app (works way better than a TAXI) when getting a ride to avoid finding a parking thats hard to find to park when all parking spots have reached their maximum capacity. FYI, almost all rides within Sacramento Downtown can vary between $ 5 – 8 only, depending if theres no price surge from both rideshare companies… But pick Lyft, you’ll pay a cheaper price compared to Über.

YIKES! With the Kings on the way in and the GOLDEN ONE making a big footprint this place is really getting the squeeze. The Macy’s is still nice enough but River City Brewing got the squeeze (too bad this would have been a great spot near the arena) and the theaters are serviceable but mainly if your choice of flick isn’t in your hood or playing at the right time. Yes coming out to a cool car in the summer is nice thanks to the garage that validates. All in all there really doesn’t seem to be much of a draw here. So odd that not so long ago there was a Hard Rock Café as well as so many fun stores in an open air setting that made for a nice shopping stroll. The times are a changing for sure.

This what left! Still have yet go to upper level! Upper level used have food court, shops, stores, even a shirt store you turn in a picture, they can produce on the shirt, cup, mug, poster! Upper level, as say not been up there! This what left of lower level! There a River City Brewing Company (not sounds child friendly so I will never try them)! There the River City Brewing Company, there a Starbucks, there is a store call Forever 21! Think used be a Hallmark store downstairs, looked emply, looked dark, so they probably closed down! That what I found as far left of Down Town Plaza in Sacra, California! Hope that helping any out of town, out of state people that reading this! Starbucks, they always so friendly~

Downtown Plaza was the place to do all your shopping needs with a big selection of top stores. It’s in a wonderful location in the hart of Sacramento, next to the highway. I had a lot of great memories there with family and friends since I was a kid, and from the past 8 years working there.
As the street signs still say «K Street Mall», it’s no longer a mall. It has lost a lot of amazing stores and friendly employees. It’s had its ups and downs from doing wonderful Christmas/​holiday events and decorations to loosing great stores every year due to the loss of customers and drop in sales (before construction started).
It’s now becoming the new location of the sports and entertainment arena for the Sacramento Kings. The Plaza still remains open on the west side, where Macy’s and Starbucks is located (4^th and K St.), during construction. There are still a few great stores remaining and the nice Food Court, where you can enjoy watching T.V. (on 4 screens) while you eat.
Inside the Food Court is the restroom and the security office down the hallway, so you always feel safe being there. The guards are very friendly, helpful, and always visible. The janitorial/​maintenance staff work hard at keeping the place clean and in shape. The management staff is wonderful!
While most of the people that go there now are there to see the progress of the new arena, which is really cool to watch, there’s still great things to do there. Like enjoy a movie with a large pop-​corn and soda at the nice and clean Century Theatre. Just don’t forget to get your parking validated for up to 4 hours!
Overall, the Plaza is still a nice place to enjoy time with your love ones and visit other nearby places, such as Old Sacramento and the State Capitol, which are all connected on K Street, just a minutes walk from each other.
Also, the plaza is expected to be remodeled later this year and a new hotel is being built along J Street between 5^th and 6^th, opening next year in fall 2016… around the same time as the new arena opens.
Hopefully it all works out with the new arena and looking forward to great things in store for us at the Downtown Plaza… very exciting!

Since much of the Downtown Plaza has been demolished to make way for the new Kings’ Basketball Arena, there isn’t much to write about… except that there is a Starbucks here. Also, if you do need to shop at Macy’s or Hallmark, this is an ideal location because there is hardly anyone here. I do hope that the Century Theaters is updated before the Arena is open because it needs an upgrade.
I recently was made aware of the Code of Conduct for the mall as well as the fact that the security guards frown upon using the parking structure to take photographs of Downtown or Old Sac (because you can only be in the parking structure to park or retrieve your vehicle and spend no time there in between or else be threatened with a misdemeanor and/​or police action). So, for your reading pleasure, here is the Code of Conduct.
The following activities are not allowed on mall property:
1. Physically or verbally threatening any person, fighting, annoying others through noisy or boisterous activities or by unnecessary staring, following another person through the Downtown Plaza or using sexually explicit language or conduct, or in any other way creating a disturbance which is disruptive or dangerous to the Downtown Plaza’s patrons or its commercial function.
2. Possession of any item that could be used as a weapon, including but not limited to: firearms, explosives, fireworks, clubs or sticks over ¼ inch in diameter, chemical dispensing devices, knives with blades over 2 inches in length, or any other object (s) that may be used in any way to inflict bodily injury on another person.
3. Assembling for the purpose of or resulting in disturbing the public peace or committing any unlawful act or engaging in any offensive behavior.
4. Use of physical force, obscene language, obscene gesture or racial, religious or ethnic slurs which are likely to create a disturbance or impinge on the hearing or peace of other guests.
5. Running, skating, roller blading, skateboarding, riding a bicycle or scooter or engaging in any activities which unreasonably obstruct or interfere with the free flow of pedestrian traffic or with patrons’ view of windows and other tenant displays.
6. Wearing apparel or gesturing in a manner which is likely to provoke a disturbance or embroil other groups or the general public in open conflict. You must be fully clothed while at the Downtown Plaza.
7. Pants or shorts may not be worn below the waist or sagging to the point where under garments or skin can be seen.
8. No hoods are allowed on or over the head at any time while at the Downtown Plaza.
9. Engaging in any non-​commercial expressive activity without complying with the Downtown Plaza’s rules for such activity.
10. Engaging in any commercial activity not sponsored and/​or conducted by the Downtown Plaza and/​or an enterprise (s) engaged in business at the Downtown Plaza, other than certain qualified labor activity. This includes, without limitations, solicitation of money or other contributions or donations, or distribution of commercial advertising or promotional material of any kind, or offering samples of items which are sold, available for sale or available in exchange for a donation or contribution.
11. Defacing, damaging or destroying any real or personal property constituting part of, or located in or on, the Downtown Plaza, and belonging to the Plaza, its patrons or its tenants including writing, spraying, scratching or otherwise affixing graffiti on such property.
12. Creating litter or throwing, discarding or depositing any paper, glass or other matter of any kind at the Downtown Plaza, except in designated trash receptacles is prohibited.
13. Having at the Downtown Plaza animals, other than animals weighing less than ten pounds in an enclosed carrier or service animals providing assistance to disabled patrons or service animals in training in the company of the trainer.
14. Smoking, other than in designated smoking areas.
15. Yelling, screaming, singing, playing musical instruments, radios, tape players, or other sound amplification devices or otherwise communication in a manner which creates noise of sufficient volume to impinge on the hearing or peace of the general public.
16. Photographing or videotaping any individual or entity on the Downtown Plaza’s property without the subject’s consent.

Ever since the closing due to the building of the new basketball stadium the downtown plaza hasn’t been the same. There’s only a select few stores worth checking out for guys and girls. That would be getta clue and forever 21 and macys. The downtown plaza has turned more into a food court than anything but we will have to wait and see until the stadium is done to see what stores they bring back!

I stopped by as ²⁄₃ of the open air mall is going under the knife /​bulldozer and took a few pictures. From L St. north to J St. and from 5 St. east to 7 St. about 4 square blocks but not all buildings on the area are getting flattened. [not a fan]

I’m really saddened that this mall lost a lot of its glory over the years. I considered it to be a very nice place to shop, go to the movies, eat at some of the restaurants, or just hang out. The outdoor mall atmosphere maintained it’s up scale and high class appearance along with its lovely architecture despite some of the outside surrounding deposits of low income hotels and homeless wanderers. There used to be many popular stores located throughout the mall that attracted many a shopper without ever feeling crowded, especially during the holidays. Parking wasn’t as attractive because you ended up having to pay whether you park along the streets or in the parking garages. At least validations were offered at most stores.
Maybe it was the economy, lack of knowledge that this mall was even here, or that people were afraid to shop in an older part of town that had devolved. There was so much potential, but the cards seemed stacked against it. Now that a new arena is planned to take its place to house the Sacramento Kings, I still have negative feelings concerning this when I think about the last of the businesses forced into eminent domain, an experience I have first hand knowledge about. The thought of tearing down an important part of downtown Sacramento is hard to fathom. Does this mean that the traffic congestion will increase? That the parking situation will be a nightmare? It just gives me all the more reason to avoid downtown Sacramento at all costs.
The disappointing loss of this mall compelled me to write a farewell review complete with photos that may one day be part of some historical archive decades from now. At the very least, they may end up on «Things I remember growing up in Sacramento’s» Facebook group, when years down the road, people will reminisce about the old Downtown Plaza and the many shops that people missed patronizing.
I only wish that I had thought of doing this when the old Florin Mall got demolished and drastically changed into a Walmart shopping center! Just another unfortunate destiny for the now endangered specialty stores…

Goodbye Downtown Plaza as it once was! Though I only recently discovered you recently and may never know your former greatness, I can tell what you used to be.
I came here one night to kill some time before meeting some friends down the street. Decided to pull into the first parking lot I saw, because I didn’t see any street parking. Was surprised to find parking at Macy’s was hourly pay-​to-​park. Ugh… Not wanting to circle the block anymore, I parked.
I was pleasantly surprised at the Macy’s, they had everything I had come to love at the Arden and Galleria Macy’s plus a Lush boutique! Score!
I walked out of Macy’s into the main mall and was shocked how beautiful the mall was! Open air, two stories, stone and wood making up the décor. Lovely!
Unfortunately, this mall is now a ghost town with the new arena going in. More than half the stores are empty, and there is almost no one shopping. The only reason to come here would be for Macy’s, Express and Victorias Secret which happens to be the only VS in the area to carry their PINK San Francisco Giants line!
I will be sad to see you go poor downtown plaza, I wish I had visited you sooner, I’m sure you were grand! I’m only hoping they preserve your general atmosphere when the demolish half of you for the new arena.
So sad.

Or as I like to call it, «Ghost-​town Plaza.»
I come here mostly for the clearance lingerie and makeup bars at Macy’s (Clinique, Benefit, Urban Decay, Lush, MAC, etc.) They also have good locations of Victoria’s Secret, Bath and Body Works, Yummy Yogurt, G by Guess, and a few more. There is a movie theater, but it’s a pretty questionable place.
The mall doesn’t have the same busy, exciting, rushy feeling that it had ten years ago or so, because it’s more than half-​empty now, but they do still have the basics, as well as a couple of play areas for kids, and a popcorn cart that can make you drool from half a mile away.
The security does a pretty good job of keeping crazies out of the mall, but you do have to watch your back around the perimeters. Seriously.

Two stories, tons of open space for walking, and not very busy at all, especially on a Thursday afternoon. I felt like I was literally the only person at the mall (other than a few delinquents with backpacks who were clearly ditching school and begging me for spare change).
Lots of little restaurants and cafes, a movie theater, a brewery, several shopping spots (including Macy’s) — this is a nice little open air mall. It’s a nice area just to walk around and window shop with friends or while taking your time strolling and chatting with your beau.
Why only 4 stars? It can get a little wet, unfortunately. This being an open air mall, the rain definitely gets all over some of the benches and tables. But there are still a few seats and tables tucked away, so don’t worry. You’ll still be able to throw your feet up and relax. The food court upstairs, for example, is completely enclosed.
A nice place to pass the afternoon by, especially if you’re staying at any of the hotels nearby.

This Plaza is alive with the surplus consumer ghosts of the 90’s!
I used to LOVE this place! I thought it was so cool! When I was little I would tag along on a shopping day trip from Stockton with my Mom and Aunts. I thought it was so cool ascending into the middle of a mall in a glass elevator while the speakers played Petula Clark’s «Downtown»
We used to go during Christmas so all the twinkle lights were out, it was vibrant, and full of shoppers.
.. buttt, those days are kinda over.
They still play «Downtown» but it is never full of shoppers, and on Sundays it seems almost abandoned. LOL but that’s fine by me, I prefer less hustle and bustle sometimes, also parking is easy, and can be validated at any store.

I keep coming here because I have faith and I also remember when this place first opened after the «big» redevelopment…
I still remember the commercials back in the day, «Downtown… where every thing’s waiting for you…» This place was incredible once upon a time, especially when Xmas rolled around. I really blame Westfield/​Roseville Galleria for sucking the life out of this great place, but a new Downtown Plaza will reemerge one day soon!

I had no idea there was even a mall in downtown Sacramento until I found myself looking into where the haunted house I had tickets to was at.
The first thing I noticed was that basically this entire building is surrounded by the homeless and some varying shady characters. So you get to one of the parking garage entrances and head down into the deserted lot. It’s like something off of a movie. I halfway expected a couple of guys in trench coats to jump out and start sword fighting while screaming «There can be only one!» So eventually I parked as close to the way up as I could with the other 6 cars in this entire thing and headed up.
Well I was surprised to see this is an open air mall. You can tell it is old and whoever was managing it had run out all of the companies in the mall because it is like a ghost town. It probably has not had any money put into it since the 1970’s and it is starting to show. There is a handful of store in here some of which are name brand, and there are just random no name stores. The most populated area of the entire thing is the food court which is by the theater and where again you find droves of homeless begging for change.
I understand that another company is now managing this property and hopefully they will invest some money into this thing. It could prove to be a good investment being a gateway to Old Town Sac. Of course they will have to get security for this place and maybe see about having things open past sunset.
For now unless you have to go here for something there’s really no point of coming.

I’ve been trying to leave the cube and take more walks during my lunch break. Unfortunately, I always seem to head in the direction of the mall. LOL!
Cons:
1. Bums everywhere. While you’re walking OR driving.
2. If you’re walking, be alert and attentive. Between the bums and whatever the light rail brings in you should be aware of your surroundings.
3. Selection of stores suck! I mean G by Guess is NOT the same thing as GUESS. Come on! There are only a handful of stores I visit here.
4. This place closes at 8pm… NOT normal mall hours.
Pros:
1. Pre Flite Bar — the hidden bar underneath the mall. A must go to spot for strong drinks.
2. Huge Macy’s women, Macy’s men, and Furniture.
3. Since not too many people frequent this place, you get a good selection of items mid week when shipments come in.
4. You can park at the mall and shop AND go into Old Sacramento and get validated at either place.

Myself and my +1 walked through the Sac Plaza Mall to check things out since we hadn’t been in awhile. My-​O-​My how things have changed in a few short years.
Many of the stores have closed up shop and care of the grounds have fallen into a dilapidated and uncared for state.
Lots of bums, homeless, degenerates and questionable characters occupy the mall during daylight hours and; I don’t even want to think about what goes on during the night after the stores close and the lights go out.
When I met Frankie P. at the Pre-​Flite Lounge carrying a can of mace, I definitely knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore.

A lot of people stopped coming to this mall for obvious reasons: lack of stores, ghetto, pay for parking (even though there’s validation), and whatever other reasons I didn’t list. But for me, I still like coming to this mall because of the fact that no one comes. During the holidays, I did all my Christmas shopping there just so I won’t have to fight the holiday crowds at Arden or the Galleria out in Roseville. Sure, it sucks that stores like Banana Republic, Gap, and recently Brookstone are all gone, but they still got a Foot Locker for my need shoes, and (two) Macy’s as their flagship tenant, for all my work clothing needs.
I personally think there is so much potential for Downtown Plaza. Westfield did a horrible job at managing this mall prior to selling it. It’s in a prime location (downtown), and it could potentially be something like what San Diego has in the Horton Plaza.

Downtown Plaza: I’ve loved you since the mid-​90s. All respect to you, but honey– and I say this with tough love– you’ve seen better days. You are entering that same netron star phase that Florin Mall saw before it closed.
Come on now. Multiple store fronts filled with holiday displays? A tattoo parlor? (I love tattoos/​tattoo parlors but even I’ll admit that proper malls are not the place for them.) 7:55pm on a FRIDAY and the few stores left are closed?
Pull yourself together, Downtown Plaza, because I like having a downtown mall and don’t want to lose it. Plus a prosperous, popular mall anchor will help the perpetual K Street makeover effort. So hopefully the new owners will be able to Tim Gunn that crap and make it work.
