i was at the Townhouse one night and saw the cool house with some sweet art mounted outside the building. it was around ten at night and i noticed the door was open. so we asked if we could come in… Chris the owner was there, and he welcomed us to check out the gallery. We LOVEDIT! what amazing art! there was plenty to look at. there is three side rooms and the main gallery. the vibe is so chill. theres some really cool custom painted furniture, murals on the walls and an amazing collection of art from established and emerging artists. Urban art, tattoo art, T shirts, drawings and photographs. i’m looking forward to hitting shiny nickel(SNAG) on second saturday! genuinely nice folks Chris and Debra. if you want to see what local Art scene is all about hit up the Shiny Nickel Art Gallery truly one of a kind. oh yeah its 151821st st across from townhouse club.

I chose to wander away from my typical route along J Street during Second Saturday and visit somewhere I would never usually consider. Shiny Nickel Art Gallery is just as the name implies — an unusual, quirky little business that stands out amongst the drab adjacent buildings like a shiny coin on the street. What a vibe! As I strolled in, a d.j. was bumping some especially funky Curtis Mayfield. The walls of this converted little studio(what I imagine was once a basement apartment) were lined with amazing paintings and photos from a variety of local artists. The artists and guests enjoyed snacks and lounged around conversing on comfy couches. The atmosphere in general reminded me of something out of the late ‘60s. The owner’s mother is a sweet lady who told me a lot about the art. My favorite display was the sugar skulls, including a giant, $ 6000 skull in a display case. Shiny Nickel is funky, local and what Second Saturday is all about. I’ll be there again soon!
