Soul Kitchen Shakedown Elite Event @ House Kitchen & Bar

Let it be known that Sac-​town knows how to get down. Can you dig it?
Thank you Alex L. for putting together this funktastic YEE. House Kitchen & Bar was a great venue whose staff cheerily pushed out a continuous flow of sensational food & drinks. The theme & enthusiastic participation of the Sac Unilocal Elites was inspirational. This YEE was loads of fun & 1 to remember. Thanks again Alex L. You go on with your funky self.

Can I help it that I’m still shakin my booty? It’s not my fault, it’s the serious grooves that were happenin at the Soul Shakedown party. Food and drinks provided by those fly mofos at House were mmm mmm good. The red velvet mini cupcakes made me feel seriously underdressed in my pink polyester suit.
After meeting up with some fellow Elites and +1’s this weekend we were all still talking about what a great time we had. This event was epic and Alex did a fantastic job organizing it. We were passing around cell phones with links to the photos taken by Minh of Disco Modjo. He’s got a way with the camera, let me tell you. I had no idea I looked so good!
Dancing, drinking, eating, schmoozing, costumes (including Afros!), prizes… you’re smoking grass if you don’t think that sounds like fun.

The attention to detail was muuuuuch appreciated. Records and musical memorabilia were placed as decorations on tables, along with many Unilocal! goodies! Soul music videos were playing on the tv’s. SOUL TRAIN! And the DJ’s def knew their stuff :]
The food and drinks were delicious. There were pork sliders, beef sliders, and my favorite, the fried chicken sliders! Lettuce wraps, pasta, some kind of spread with my bread, and the fried chicken with the sweet sauce? (Anyone remember what it was called? The waiter tried to explain it to me, but my eyes and mind were focused on the plate he was holding! :D). THE CHEESECAKEEE! it’s a definite MUST TRY!
Bartenders were super groovy. I loveeed the wigs they wore! The specialty drinks didn’t even taste like they had alcohol in them! :] suuper yum.

I would have written this sooner, but it took my memory a while to restore itself. Ahem.
ANYWAY. You, sir, know exactly what you are doing, and so do the rest of the fabulous people who made the night a success. The House Kitchen staff are lovely and accommodating, and the food is delectable. Uh, red velvet? You obviously knew I was coming, and you did me proud. And I’m pretty sure the ice picks were delicious as well, seeing as how I consumed one too many (that would be two.)
The DJ groovified things up, and wouldn’t ya know it, in some of those pictures I look like I can dance! Okay, in ONE of those pictures, and it’s actually David O. who’s making me look good. Minh, you are as talented a photographer as they come, and such a love.
Lastly, everyone, and I do mean everyone, looked GOOD. Pack me some boxes, why don’t you.

Perhaps it’s because House is tucked away in the bottom floor of an office building, but this place has yet to get the exposure it deserves. I hope our most recent elite event, the «Soul Kitchen Shakedown,» helps to spread their stellar reputation!
I would best describe the menu as classic American comfort foods with a modern twist. Their spicy chicken sandwich, pulled pork and variety of salads are all top-​quality fare. Their revamped menu is a big improvement. They’re adding new dishes and really taking their customers input to heart.
And the setting — there aren’t many great spots in this area of town where you can sit by a large open window and just observe. House tops the list. Not to mention they have a great horseshoe bar area and modern, minimal interior that is both classy and welcoming.
I’m glad to get «in the House» anytime!

Can you dig it Sacramento? I knew we had it in us, but I never expected it to be so awesome! What a party — thank you Alex L., House (Chris and Shawna — are both great at hosting a par-​tay), Minh (awesome photographic eye), Plaza 555 (for letting us park without injuring our wallets), and the DJ’s who helped us to Keep on Trucking all night long with their great tunes.
Everyone there was Loooo-​king goooooood!!! We really are a very handsome group! We had soul sistas, hippies, and afro’s beyond the realm of the imagination. It was really fun to see so much real vintage threads. A seventies party can be so fun because a quick tour of the local thrift shops will get some wonderful authentic duds.
The location was sick and the eats were dope. I really enjoyed the mini corn cakes and spinach dip. The drinks were pretty out of this world too. I think my very favorite was the chicken sandwich. There were some great desserts too, but I was so full from the savory side and the flowing brews that I did not really partake.
The Unilocalers really Felt Tha Funk with a group Hustle (thank you Jefferson L. for your patient teaching to this group of misfits!) and a grooving Soul Train line. Highlight of my night was prancing down it and bumping hips with my sweetie.
I am so excited for the next event, how can they keep getting better? I know they will! Catch You on the Flip-​Side Sacramento!

Love the costumes — everyone seemed to capture a different 70s look, which was great. The food was good but I missed out on a few items because either a) I didn’t get there early enough or b) the tray was cleaned out before I got to it. Met a few new folks and had a great time chatting.
I want to give extra bonus points to the girl with the Afro puffs. She was rocking that look! And the girl in the black chemise top with silk pants, very early SNL days (Laraine Newman and/​or Gilda Radner) — LOVE IT. The boys were looking fly, too — all the newscaps, ‘fros, sideburns. Props to Jefferson for his Chico & the Man look, and loved the aquarium platforms on Micah.
Thanks to Paul J. for giving me & my friend Donelle the tip on Unilocal events, including the UYE Humpty Hours. Will try to check out one of those soon.

I got the pleasure of being Yvonne N.‘s plus 1!!! Whoo hoo there are some perks of being friends with an Elite!!!
Very fun and funky themed event. We all enjoyed the vibe and venue itself. We even enjoyed the walk here, after parking on the street and pasted by a couple sights on Capitol Mall… cheesy but true!
We saw a lot of people go all out for the event and it made us feel kind of bad that we didn’t dress up as well as them! But props to them for looking so groovy.
The food was pretty good as well, although there wasn’t anything that I still dream about… there were some key dishes. The Spinach and Artichoke Dip served with sliced Butter/​Garlic Baguette was delicious. The Pork Sliders, 5 Cheese Elbow Mac n’ Cheese, Deviled Eggs, Meatloaf w/​Mashed Potatoes, (Chicken or ?) Salad Wrap, and etc… for dessert was cheesecake and it was yummy!
*It would be greatly appreciated to have a small display what entrée/​food is being served… just a little card! :)
The drinks were pretty darn good too! The Raspberry Ice Tickle was the star of the night, we ordered rounds and rounds. *Remember to tip your bartenders! We also got the Olympia Beer, seemed to a Hefeweizen? Not too sure, but it was good too!
Good job Alex! Really fun and can’t wait to see what Unilocal has in store for the community again.

We fueled up the DeLorean, set the date to 1977 and punched it to 88 miles per hour. After the blue flash faded, we found ourselves in some place called House Kitchen & Bar, an apparent sanctuary for the funkified denizens of the late 70s. Costumed, we went unnoticed among the other polyester-​clad, enjoying libations, scrumptious eats and funky tunes.
We mingled, we laughed, we danced The Hustle. We were thoroughly enjoying the era of platform shoes, bell-​bottoms and feathered hair when one of the rookie members of our team, befuddled by Raspberry Ice Picks and too much blue eye shadow on his new acquaintance, made a tragic mistake.
«How do you make your bread?» she asked.
«Bread? Oh, money! Unilocal-​dot-​com. The review website.»
«Web – what?»
“Website. You know, on the Internet.”
«I have no idea what kinda jive-​ass shit you’re talking about.»
«Yes, you do. The Internet! The thing Al Gore ‘invented.’»
«Al Gore? That congressman from Tennessee?»
«No, the Vice President. And the Internet is on your home computer.»
«My computer? You’re crazy! Only NASA’s got computers, fool.»
At this point we broke up the conversation, hoping there would be no ill effects. Unfortunately, we later overheard Ms. Blue Eye Shadow talking to a geeky little guy with thick glasses about computers in people’s homes. He said he owned a software company and that her ideas were interesting.
We were shaken. Could this misstep leave an indelible mark, changing history and the future forever? We hated to leave this wonderfully outrageous party – the disco balls, the afros, the leisure suits – but we had to find out. Reluctantly, we went back to the car, fed Mr. Fusion as much garbage as possible, punched in 2011 and sped back… to the future!
And the future… was the same. Just not nearly as fun.

Wow! I can’t believe we topped that Oscar Event. Alex has done it again!
The first people I see walking up to the event— Joe, Ida and their friend Jo looking funky. I just laughed and said we are going to have fun tonight!
House was the perfect place to host this event. Shout out to the bartenders and staff. I will be back! Trust me on that!

Let’s try to cover this review with some 70’s funky songs:
The food was pretty good I didn’t like everything but that meatloaf and cheesecake made up for the stuff I didn’t like. The meatloaf made me «wanna get on the good foot»
It was so great seeing everyone dressed up and looking funky and soulful! I wanted to «get down»
So after watching all of the James Brown clips in preparation I didn’t «give a doggone about it» or anything else I just wanted to dance.
Jeff taught us how to «do the hustle» and that was a blast.
The main event of the night was the soul train line. Ummm in case anyone was wondering… I love to dance! I did all of the dances I practiced from watching those clips, so that was a blast. Everyone was shaking and moving!
The the soul train line came and everyone was «doin it death» (we should have played that song)
I had so much fun and I can’t wait until the next event!

70’s Groovy Shakedown Unilocal Event, Saturday, April 2, 2011, approximately 8:30pm.
I failed miserably at doing the lawnmower, going down the soul train. Then I attempted to redeem myself by doing the Q-​tip. Oh I am so glad I’m used to making a fool of myself!
This last Unilocal event was taken place at House Kitchen & Bar and the venue itself was very easy to find, very spacious and I really appreciated the outdoor seating since Saturday was such a gorgeeeeous day.
Although no particular dish stood out and made my jaw drop, every dish provided was delectable in its own way. They provided meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, spinach and artichoke dip, beef sliders, a salad wrap, and some sweet salsa-​y thing that looked like scallop but wasn’t even meat! It was delish. no one liked it but me –_​– haha. And for dessert, I believe it was crème brûlée cheesecake? Ahhhh, such a perfect ending. They also had strawberry cheesecake and red velvet cupcakes that I didn’t care too much for.
As for alcohol, the Raspberry Ice Pick was my favorite. Although it was strong, it was still tasty… which doesn’t go the same for the Kamikaze’s! I was introduced to Olympic beer, which wasn’t too bad. The chardonnay definitely screamed complimentary all over but it was probably the wine that got me the most buzzed that night!
I love how most people went all out and dressed up, I wish I would have been more prepared =(Met a few Unilocalers, which is always great. And had the best time ever shaking my butt for the soulllll train! Good job, Alex!!!

Amazing and I walk from the car in the parking lot and are asked by another couple: «Are you guys going to the Unilocal party?»
Wearing a huge plaid suit with 4.5 inch lapels and standing on platform shoes with fish tanks in the heels I answer: «What makes you ask that?»
Amazing holds up her fist and answers: «Solid!!»
Soul Kitchen Shakedown time!
House Kitchen and Bar is pretty easy to find, and so was parking with the proper instructions (thanks Alex). The layout of the place is pretty awesome with a huge patio that can make you feel like you’re just at a house party. House hooked us up with drinks for the night, and even some wine on the back patio.
Wow the food!!! It just kept coming!!! Some of the food was good, the rest of it was awesome, incredible, and made me eat more than I should have. I think New York Elites could have even been satiated by that spread.
Jefferson led us in The Hustle, and a Soul Train soon followed, then general dancing. I think it was the shoes that gave me the win for best men’s outfit.
Elites in Sacramento rock. Theme parties are boisterous, and Unilocal throws a helluva party. House Kitchen was a great location, and I plan to return as a regular customer… without sideburns.

I had the pleasure of being CM Alex’s plus one last night and further honored to be a part of a big ol’ Funky Family Free-​For-​All that took place at House Kitchen & Bar.
Everyone looked amazing! Shout out to all the sexy sistas with their Afros and Farah Faucett feathers and to the bold brothers wearing that tight polyester and platform kicks. Unilocalers have a lot of spirit and really commit 100%!
First and foremost, I have to give the House bartenders lots of love. I wish I could remember their names. (The cutie bartender with the floppy hat and killer shades and the afroed beauty with the tats.) They consistently served up stiff liquid candies my way that nearly erased my short term memory of last night. That’s great service!
House generously offered two complementary mixed drinks: the raspberry ice pick and fuzzy navel and served Olympia beer out on the patio. I didn’t try the navel because the ice pick was so sweet-​tart tasty I couldn’t bring myself to cheat on it. I can’t wait to come back and enjoy the patio with a drink and dream on a hot day in the near future.
I had a healthy sampling of the most of the appetizers and desserts: deviled eggs, spinach & artichoke dip, lettuce wraps, BBQ slider, mac and cheese, red velvet cupcakes and cheesecake bites. I forget how good a simple deviled egg can be! And throw some capers into the mix and I’m sold! I thought the food was a solid display of classic American favorites. My top choices hands down were the mac and cheese and cheesecake. What can I say, I love cheese anything! These savory sneak peeks spiked my interest and I will be revisiting to see what the full menu has to offer soon.
House is in a great location, smack dab in the middle of capitol mall. I loved the spaciousness of the restaurant itself and the décor. Minimal but warm; wood paneling, windows everywhere and bright flowers lend itself that that homey/​comfort feel. After being at the party for about an hour I noticed there’s a huge whisk hanging from the ceiling. How did I not notice that sooner? What can I say, I’m short and close to the ground.
Details like the 8 track cassettes, funk albums, disco balls, abba-​zabbas, tootsie pops and other retro goodies mixed with the all the Unilocal swag at each table evoked that time warp feel. I found myself drifting away from conversations because I was distracted by the Soul Train unscramble video clips playing on the TV screens. I was determined to get ALL the scrambles right.
Again, the house staff were beyond hospitable and really seemed to be enjoying the soul funk theme.
After all the mingling, munching, and imbibing, there was nothing left to do but DANCE!
Asses were shaking and hips were gyrating to the funk the DJs were spinning. The music was unbelievable! All I can say is Gawd Damn! Every song played was better than the next. The DJs, Blaze and Lefty, accommodated to what us Unilocalers wanted to hear. Towards the end of the night we shifted from funky James Brown to disco Donna Summer! There was group dance (the Hustle), some free-​styling, and a sick soul train line! All in all, there were some shameful and proud moments on the dance floor. I am sure Minh captured them all (fingers crossed).
Speaking of, Minh was stealth-​like; laying on the floor, crouching in a corner, snapping away during the event. I can’t wait to see the evidence!
The Soul Shakedown event set up was perfect in that the music volume level, the amount of space, the buffet location, the number of people in attendance, were just right for socializing. Unilocalers are some cool cats! I got the opportunity to get to know some Unilocalers a little better and made some great friends.
Congratulations to all the prize winners! Best dressed and dancers were aptly awarded to the right folks!
Last night’s boogie was FOR REAL!

Soul Shakedowns are sooo my thing. I felt right at home in my afro, funky dress, and shiny black boots. In fact, I was so excited about this party that I even had a dance routine ready for the soul train line, but I choked last minute and forgot all my moves – oh well, it happens!
The music was bumpin’, soulful vibes filled the air, and most importantly, the food was flowing. My favorite tasty treats of the night were the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, corn cake thingies, chicken skewers, red velvet cupcakes, and deviled eggs. But let’s be honest, it’s pretty hard to screw up a deviled egg. I love them bunches and could eat ‘em all day, but I figured there was no reason to go all «New York Unilocal Elite» on their asses, so I showed restraint.
Extra special shout outs to my main MoFo Jessica W for allowing me to hijack her conversation with my jive talk, Jefferson L for teaching us all The Hustle, my girl Rachel Z for her gorgeous hair, my soul sista Betty R for rockin’ those cute ass afro puffs, the secret judge who voted for me to win Most Authentic Outfit, Darrell Y for allowing me to molest his super soft chest hair (anger boner!), House Kitchen & Bar for their beautiful venue and awesome staff, and Alex L for, yet again, throwing a fantastic partaaay for his Elites and our +1s!
We had ourselves a Soul Shakedown, for sure!

I was SO looking forward to this event, that I had heart palpitations for a week prior! (Anticipation or old age? I may never know). But the thought of entering the «Time Tunnel» to the 70’s funky soul and disco era was met to the extreme! I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing the whole night! It was THAT good!
My boyfriend Joe K, and my best friend from high school Jo G, joined me on this ultimate excursion to relive our «childhood» memories… dressing and dancing from «back in the day». I love theme parties, and everyone did a great job dressing the part! The women were hotter than hot and the men cooler than cool!
The House Kitchen and Bar was the ideal place to hold this «funk-​shun». Plenty of room for us to mingle inside or out on the patio. Large windows to show off our moves to the jealous outsiders. Delicious soul kitchen food and desserts. Great staff serving a variety of tasty foods and bartenders that served our special Unilocalers drink of the night, Raspberry Ice Picks. That was a cocktail with flavor AND punch! I think that initiated our Unilocaling Elites and +1’s, into an indescribable camaraderie that couldn’t be beat!
The DJ played a good mix of music, but there was a lot of music that I missed hearing that would have really brought the house down. Some of the music played weren’t that danceable or seemed a bit obscure. I know what we danced to. Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Average White Band, Ohio Players, Kool and The Gang, Wild Cherry, Commodores, The Isley Brothers, etc… I could go on and on about these classic soul groups! I’ll give out a little secret, I was co-​owner with my ex husband of a mobile DJ business back in the 70’s. And we were very popular! Don’t mean to add my slight disappointment here, but music is one of my few passions. Enough said!
Our CM Alex worked hard and once again looked the part to keep our time travel excursion stable and the time machine itself, functioning within exceptable, exceptional, parameters! Great job Alex!

Everyone looked AMAZING! Especially Sophia’s Fro, Betty’s Puffs, and Jefferson’s Jay Leno Demin!
The food was also really great — I shoveled in many deviled eggs, corn cakes and artichoke dip. Mmm… tasty for sure!
All in all, I’m really glad I wasn’t around in the 70s, because I’m pretty sure I would have been drunk dancing the whole decade. Way to go Elites, you shook your tail feathers and looked groovy doin’ it!

Alex, your events are making my theater dork self REALLY happy!
This was a super fresh good time packed with tasty sensations, yummy cocktails and costumes galore. My inner disco diva really got a chance to shine last night (disco ball included)!
House has an ample amount of room for us Unilocalers to really bring on the funk. This beautiful space, packed with a gorgeous patio, had a plethora of treats for us to sink our teeth into.
We were served a really creamy Mac and Cheese, unbelievable spinach artichoke dip (possibly the best I’ve ever had) with garlic toasted bread, deviled eggs and cheesecake bites with raspberry in the middle! You better believe that I went back for more, and of course House kept the treats coming to make that possible.
The House staff also jumped on board, dressed up, and looked super fly to boot! Plus they were really friendly, on top of helping us out, and a real pleasure to spend 3 hours of my night with!
What I really am appreciating about Alex is his uniqueness to both Elite events. We have had Hollywood Glam, now Disco Funk, which encourages everyone to bring out the costume guns. There were some higher than high afro’s, platforms shoes that would make any drag queen proud, and GOLD everywhere. To see people dressed up really brings an extra fun, really interesting element to these gathering. It also really makes me excited to see what other fun things our Unilocal future holds!
This was another one of those events that I felt so excited and proud to be apart of Sacramento Unilocal!Well done everyone!

Who the f* k is this Alex guy? He comes prancing into Unilocal,throws the most awesome Academy Awards bash ever, only to completely top it with Soul Kitchen Shakedown. How does he do that? Alex, we are expecting your complete life story at the next elite event.
The House Kitchen and Bar is a beautiful setting for a party to start with You throw in some great food, good drinks, and get F U N K Y with a little soul music and you have the makings for a damn good party.
Next you mix in the elite Unilocal crowd and you have the recipe for a total
B L A S T .
Micah; you outdid yourself with that outfit. Joy and company; damn you can lay down some mean, funky ass steps. Of course Alex was dressed good enough to be the MC on Soul Train. As far as Michelangelo; I think I once saw a guy dressed like him being busted for dealing drugs back in the day. Jefferson gets my wizard of the month award for leading the dance with complete style and grace. Then you have Leah that does not even have to try, she just naturally busts those moves in total «gansta» style. Last but not least, I have to mention Paul, is that guy not Mr. Cool himself or what?
I would like to give a very special thanks to Minh for doing the photography. I am sure the pictures are going to be wonderful.
To everyone that I failed to mention; you were so completely over the top awesome that there are not even any words to describe you in the English Language.

This was one hell of a party! I loved it! Alex… once again kicking major butt and getting a bunch of fantastic people together in a beautiful place for a magnificent party.
Everyone was dressed so awesome. Everywhere you looked there was someone wearing a really cool ensemble and beautiful smiles to compliment them with. I met so many Unilocalers I had never met and had the pleasure of once again seeing others I had met at other events. I loved talking to everyone and I felt so comfortable. I’d love to mention names but there were too many people so I’ll sum it up to everyone was Freakin AWESOME!
The food at this place was delicious, the drinks were so good I just had to have a couple. Raspberry Ice Picks was my drink for the night but they also had Fuzzy Navels and a few others. I’m feeling the Ice Pick right now but it was worth it. LOL! Plenty of pictures taken everywhere, Minh was the photographer for the event so I’m sure these pics are going to be «glowing.» The bartenders served it up and the music was off the hook.
We started off doing the «Hustle» and followed it with a soul train line that was so much fun.
I had fun shopping for my outfit, my Afro puffs and putting my outfit together for what was to be one of the greatest party’s Alex has once again put together.
I won a prize for «Best Afro» and my prize was pretty darn cool (mustache egg mold and gift certs). Thank you!
This party was definitely a. Woohoo! As good as it gets!

SITREP
The House Kitchen & Bar had it’s ROOF BLOWN OFF TONIGHT with the musical stylings of Marvin Gaye, the BeeGees, and many other FUNK-​A-​LICIOUS 70s music artists at Unilocal’s «Soul Kitchen Shakedown Elite Event» on Capitol Mall tonight! (The Legislators in session late tonight probably had no idea why the Downtown grid was swaying and sashaying as the ground moved to the rhythm of Motown — I’m SURE, however, it helped them move FORWARD with their budget negotiations, for reals!).
THE SET-​UP
The House Kitchen & Bar set-​up has a fantastic environment for dancing, drinking and enjoying delectable taste treats. There is ample floor space for moving around in the center, with booths conveniently located on the windows on the mall-​side of the venue.
The bar is centrally & rectangularly located and accessible from three sides. There was never a wait for more than a couple of minutes since 3 bar tenders were constantly moving from guest to guest.
And with the outside patio area, there was more than a dozen 6-​seater tables for guest to relax, drink and chat, and there was also ample room to mingle and enjoy the fantastic weather that we had today in the State Capitol. There was also a secondary bar on the patio that permitted guests to stay close to their seats while getting another drink.
THE DRINKS!
For the Unilocal crew, there were complimentary FUZZY NAVELS and RASPBERRY ICE PICKS and these drinks packed a lot of punch (though both Amanda and I have to give it to the Fuzzy Navels for having the MOST «punch!»)
But for reasonable happy hour purchases until 8pm, we could also imbibe in beers like Stella and Guiness, white or red wines, or mixed drinks like Kamikazes and Jack & Cokes. There was more than enough to wet our whistles!
THE FOOD
What delectable taste treats! From breads & spinach dip, a polenta style cornmeal bite treat, Mac n’ cheese, BBQ sliders, a tasty & spicy meatloaf with mashed potatoes, and other bite-​sized munchies — the eatin was good and very filling!
And for dessert, there was cheese cake squares and mini-​cupcakes!
THE DANCING!
This is what made this event truly stand out in my mind since unlike other elite events, not only was there an ample set up for dancing, but the dancing itself a few times during the evening was the «centerpiece» of entertainment.
There was enough space to do couples-​ballroom style dances, and also some line dancing /​group dancing with the «Jefferson» leading out in the Hustle! [And I must say, kudos to Jefferson for taking the time to break that ice and let us follow him! THE LOWDOWN
This was truly one of the best Unilocal events that coordinated so many different 70s pop funk cultural references, from the visuals (with actual SOUL TRAIN footage on the big screen monitors!), the music, the food, the eclectic (I LOVED the period 8-​track and vinyl albums distributed throughout the tables for kitschy fun!), the Unilocalers stylin in 70s funk attire, and the awesome dancing opportunities. The best Unilocal «dance-​party» that I’ve been to yet!
