I visited this place with a friend(who knows his Sushi) and was impressed with the food off the top! Hadn’t been back in over a year and a half, and still had memories of my Princess Roll, the Tarantula, and the RonDizzle. In celebration of my best friend’s birthday,(also a sushi lover), I KNEW I wanted to take her there. For a moment, I second thought atmosphere and ambiance, and thought it might be better to take her to a trendy upscale fine dining place downtown, but couldn’t resist the urge to go back for the savoring exerience of Tokyo Fros. I called and spoke to FRO who enthusiastically invited me to bring my friend and celebrate there. His words«come on in… I’ll hook you up» had me a little curious :) Last night we enjoyed the Passion of the Rice, Miracle on Rice and the Badass Roll… YUM…I think that the Passion of the Rice was my fave… that is until Tony, the man in charge… came out, wished her happy birthday personally along with our waitress(very friendly and full of compliments and good suggestions) broought out the Snap, Crackle & Pop Roll DESSERT! Yum! Have to try that most definately! Over in the bar area, was a bit more action, as they had tables broken up into teams and played some sort of Trivia for cash/prizes. All in all, I’m going back and I’m bringing my Sushi Critics with me so they can join in on the experience. For me, it’s worth the drive. I’m hoping to be able to get over there for happy hour and enjoy half priced rolls. Avg. Roll 12−13…most expensive I seen on the menu: $ 16.

The parking situation can get a little difficult because of the other shops/restaurants in the same plaza. The outside area is quite nice, and the inside is OK. They just push some tables around to make a dance floor, pull down a screen, put in a DJ, and turn down the lights. The music is good on the nights I’ve been there, but no one really dances, so it just doesn’t have that mood. The last couple times we were trying to get drinks, the bartenders were VERY rude and even messed up on one of our drinks … but we didn’t even bother to tell them; we just wanted to down what we got and get the hell out of there. Maybe if this place had better food or service then I’d come back. But I won’t come all the way back and pay to get in, just to listen to the DJ. I’ve given this place WAYYY too many chances already.

Love coming here for happy hour, they have some great deals on sushi. Not a big fan of the ultra lounge vibe, but I’ll put up with it for cheap good sushi.

I love the price and viariety of Sushi here. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are in a rap video. Only criticism is that they are not consistent with their hours. I have went a few times and for some reason they would not be open then randomly they would be open.

I love this place. The rolls are just as good as the fair oaks location, but half price. It’s usually pretty dead so it’s easy to get a table no wait. The waitress there is so ditzy, but she tries hard which makes it even funnier and she’s very nice. My only complaint is they always run out of ingredients for the snap crackle pop roll, which I’d recommend to try if you go there and they have it.

Tokyo Fro’s could be mind bendingly awesome but they fell one star short, and that’s with the service. Although our server was friendly, she was ditzy as all hell and I swear that I could have convinced her that we had already paid the bill without using jedi mind tricks. HOWEVER, due to the recent economic crisis their happy hour rolls are a welcome relief for my worn out wallet. From 4 – 8 all of their rolls, except for two, are half off. Cheap and yummy. Their beer selection is so-so but there are staples like Fat Tire and Blue Moon. If you haven’t been and you’re a fan of «fusion-esque» rolls try the following: G-Spot, Passion of the Rice, or Coach T Finger Roll. For an appetizer, grow a pair and order the«Sexu-Albacore.» Four Shizzle Stars.

Fro — FIXEDUP A LOTOFTHINGS — that i had complained about in the previous review. The wait staff was attentive and provided excellent service. Gotta love Fro’s selection when comes to waitresses! Nice Couches and feel. A solid choice for your Ultra Lounge experience.

Mmmmmmkay. Let’s start by saying that I really do look for three things in a happy hour: 1. cheap food 2. cheap(not reasonable) draft beer 3. a nice place to sit and smoke my cigarettes So here’s the deal — they’re posting sign spinners during rush hour — that got my attention. And I’m thinking that, since I like the location on Fair Oaks, this will be a perfect place to stop and eat, drink, and smoke on the way to my car. So I have my friend meet me there for happy hour. I must say the place probably lights up with all those hot young people that allegedly frequent Dream but when we were there it was empty. And quiet. I walked in and said«Ummm…is this the place with the ‘insane’ happy hour?» Hey… that’s what the sign said. The gentleman behind the counter nodded and my friend and I had a seat on the fancy white leather-like seating apparatus. Much to my chagrin, there is no draft beer available(strike one) so I ordered a bottle of beer which was served at a less than chilled temp(strike two). We ordered two half-priced rolls which were well-presented and tasted good. The waitress was sweet and pretty and my friend’s well drinks were decent. At smoke time we ventured out onto this patio cage thing and were amused by the fire and the lights of it all. I was disappointed by the seating(bench on wall) and the fact that there was no ashtray. Putting my cigs out in a plant sort of kills the whole«ultra lounge» vibe for me. All in all, I think Tokyo Fro’s did well on holding up their end of the bargain. However, teaming up with(moving in with) a nightclub to try and create a happy hour was not the best idea… does this nightclub even have a kitchen? That decision might just spell the beginning of the end for the satellite location.

I am really torn about whether this is a 2 or 3 star-worthy place, because my experience last night was all over the place. We passed the guy on the skateboard(in front of Memorial Auditorium) with the ½ Off sign, and decided to check it out. The space is very strange — it was like Avalon(or some other weird hip hop music video nightclub), but almost completely empty, and the staff seemed surprised to see customers. Having never been to the location on Fair Oaks, I found the menu confusing — rolls with names like«Notorious B.I.G» and«Captain-Save-a-Fro»(very clever on the second reference, but certainly not descriptive). The service was slow, the waitress didn’t know what beers they stocked, and when we did get beers, she kept trying to take them away when there was still ¼ left in the bottle and bring new ones — one time I wasn’t vigilant enough and she succeeded. Grr. She was pleasant and friendly, just very scattered and confused. The saving grace was that the rolls were actually very good, and at half off, were $ 5-$ 8. Beers were $ 3, not amazing for bottled beer, but ok in that part of town. So, what to do when the ambience and service are very strange, but the food is good and the price is right? I’ll check it out again in a couple of months and see where they are…

I agree with the first review that I also like the location in Fair Oaks. However, I am thrilled that they now have a second location downtown. My husband and I were on our way to the freeway when we spotted their sign with someone waving it on the sidewalk. We decided to detour and check it out. Come on, half price appetizers and cocktails and of course being that it was Tokyo Fros we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Well, we found their new location right next to our favorite hangout The Torch Club. What could be better? Again, I will agree with the previous review, that there was no Host Stand but that didn’t stop us. We were there to check it out. The new place they set up in I had been familiar with only as a night club. There are big white booths with large square tables. I actually thought, Cool, that would make for a nice place to get together with friends. Then we saw a long bar with 2 flatscreen TV’s. Sushi and Football? Getting better. The bartender greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere we liked. The place is lit like a night club but I like it. We went tward the back and walked around to the other side where there were more of the big spacious booths and some tall top tables. That’s when we spotted the sushi bar. Yes, it is small but we really liked it. Ross, one of the sushi chef’s behind the bar was very friendly and greated us right away. His personality reminded me of what a good bartender should be like. One thing I don’t do is judge a restaurant too quickly if they have only been open for 1 month. There is always a transition period where things need time to mesh. We did notice a tall gentleman delivering sushi dishes to tables. Come to find out, it was Fro himself. Now that is the sign of a good restaurant owner. It is important to really get to know your new enviroment and customers. He introduced himself and was a great guy to talk to. He also introduced us to Joe his general manager who was also busy on the floor. Well we finished our sushi rolls which were fantastic. We definately plan on coming back. Unfortunately, we were on the wagon for the month of Jan. so you can imagin what a bummer it was to see half price cocktails. Oh well, maybe we will get lucky next month when we return. Our perfect night? Tokyo Fros Sushi and dancing at The Torch Club. Can’t wait til Feb.
