I was in Natomas with a craving for nachos. We drove by a couple places and pulled into Tortuguitas. It looked closed. It was kinda dark and I didn’t see anyone inside at all. No staff, and worse yet… no customers. I’m always weary about walking into a joint that doesn’t have any customers. Hmmmm… we left. We drove to Los Amigos at the Shell gas station and my friend said it was hella good, but it’s more of a grab something and go spot. I needed a place to sit and enjoy my nachos. So we went back to Tortuguitas only to find that the place was actually closed! The owner must have took pity on our disappointed and hungry faces because he so pleasantly opened back up for us. So I’m ready to order my nachos, but there aren’t any nachos on the menu! Just ask and you shall receive. I had a huge plate of carne asada nachos with everything on it. Quite yummy. The meat was on the dry side, I’m sure due to it being the leftover from the day. I didn’t care. It was still yummy. The salsas and pico de gallo, even at closing, remained fresh and flavorful. The simple cheese quesadilla was great. Not greasy or heavy. And the owner made us a side of guacamole on the spot. Delicious! Three stars for the food, and an extra huge star for the wonderful, awesome, welcoming, above and beyond, friendly service!

So this is a new place, I was skeptical about trying it because it took over my old favorite pita place’s location. Its located in the Raley’s shopping center next to Subway. The guys here are really friendly, the menu is fairly limited compared to other taquerias around. They main items they list inlcude: tacos, burritos, and tortas, but they also have combos & house specialties that I’m not familiar with. Their tacos are only $ 1.50 each. They’re the simple kind that consist of a single corn tortilla, meat of your choice and cilantro and onions. I tried pollo and carne asada and they were both delicious, just right. They didn’t skimp on the meat either. I also got guac & chips for $ 3.00(chips & salsa are free). The guac was pure avocado and it was a great deal for the quality and amount they gave. Ask for pico de gallo on top of your guac. Their salsas & sauces were thick, not watered down like other mexican restaurants, they’re also a bit spicer than others. Their pico de gallo is great, good ratio between tomatoes/onions/cilantro, not watery at all. For $ 1.50 a taco I’ll definitely come here more often. *EDIT: Sadly this is one of those places that was better when it first opened. I’m gonna have to give them one more try, but they’ve already been demoted from 4 to 3 stars.
