I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. After a long night of music and fun at Blues City Deli, we were still hungry and noticed that A-1 Wok was still open. Curious and pensive, we made our first and last trip to this Chinese joint on Gravois. Like many of the Chinese dives in South City, A-1 is set up to be strictly carry out, having no tables and only chairs lined up against the wall. The clerk addressed us right away, but since it was our first time, we were definitely not ready. The menu behind her was flickering, so I couldn’t really read it. After being prompted to order again, I asked if they had sesame chicken. She confirmed it. Elicia ordered some sort of spicy chicken, and in a matter of moments, we were out the door. I had no idea what was waiting for my in the Styrofoam container, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found crab rangoon and fried rice. A-1 seems to suffer from the same issues that many other St. Louis Chinese does. First, the chicken was a pretty poor quality. In fact, I wasn’t entirely convinced that I was eating chicken. The crab rangoon definitely lacked, and the rice was pretty average. We had been intrigued by A-1 Wok, but now that intrigue has turned into indifference. With Park Chop Suey down the street, I’m afraid that we’ll be staying clear of this retro building on Gravois.

Fresh, hot, fast, polite-nothing new or exciting, but it’s pretty ok takeout :)

Caryout only. Its’ a good thing because the décor is early 70’s chain restruant.
