Tried this place for lunch today. I ordered a sandwich called«The American» which is supposed to have turkey, ham, salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo on a hoagie. It didn’t sound amazing, but honestly nothing on their menu really caught my attention so I just picked something. They made the sandwich wrong. They deleted the mayo and added mustard. Uhhh… I’m not exactly a fan of mustard when it’s the only sauce on a sandwich, so that ruined it for me. As far as all of the other ingredients I can see why other people before me are comparing the place to Subway. They have very average ingredients. The meats look like they came from the deli of a local grocery store. Other than the fact that they messed up my order the sandwich would be okay, but I don’t have any reason to go back. Also the place was completely without customers around noon which should be the busiest time of day for a restaurant like this.

Decided to give Tommy’s a try for lunch and very pleased to see several people eating & ordering lunch. I ordered 2 of «The Big Daddy» which have Chili, cheese and onions served on a brioche«egg» bun. The ¼ pound 100% beef jumbo dogs were taken out of the fridge and placed in a microwave??? After the«Ding», they were taken out and placed in the egg based buns-the buns did add to it… however, the chili was lacking and tasted«can» so it took away. I noticed that chopped Red Onions, were also used instead of the traditional Spanish or White, again taking away from the overall enjoyment of the sandwiches. Suggestions would be: A small flat top grill would add to the taste & flavor of the dogs as well as lightly toasting the buns adding flavor and more texture to the sandwich… also, if his«own» Chili was made-which is simple to make would also be a HUGE improvement over the can stuffed being used, and finally, used the«traditional» onions instead of using Red Onions, there is a difference in the taste. Good potential at Tommy’s and I really want it to reach it’s full potential, but with so many other places that make & do the smaller things that make your food & meal memorable now, don’t see myself going there again unless I see or hear or see some changes.

I can’t imagine why the owners opened this place. They obviously aren’t passionate about food, they obviously don’t have any new ideas to bring to the table, and they obviously can’t afford quality ingredients. This place makes Subway look gourmet. I’ve had better food in a grade school cafeteria. The turkey is about five notches down from what you’d get pre-packaged at the grocery store. The«chili» is about two notches down from the slop they put on nachos at rinky-dink concession stands. Every single sandwich on the menu lists ingredients that you’d find at just about any other deli, except just about any other deli would taste a thousand times better. There are zero menu items that even SOUND like they’d be different from every other sandwich you’ve had before, much less do they actually taste different — unless by «different» you mean«terrible.» The bread is very similar to a fast food burger bun. Everything clearly came out of huge, off-brand, mass-produced drums. I almost feel bad being this negative — I don’t even think I’ve ever written a review on here before — but if you have NO original ideas and you intend to serve cheap, disgusting crap, WHY would you open a restaurant? It’s not like the food industry is the way to a cheap buck. I just don’t get it… Other bad reviews are absolutely correct. Cheap ingredients, uninspired menu.

Love the meatball sub! Soo delicious! Also try the spinach salad, the raspberry dressing is amazing! Tommy is so nice and the place is so cute. A good addition to south city!

Would love to have given this place a better review but it was actually worse my 2nd time. The sandwich literally tasted like something subway would have made for me… at best. They are really nice, clean, and efficient but unfortunately there is just nothing about Tommys that differentiates itself from the other delis in the area.

Food was OK at best. The owner refused to allow the use of restroom. It’s hard to believe a new restaurant with that much seating would have no place for customers to wash hands or use the restroom Very gross. My last visit for sure.

Not bad, but nothing to write home about, either. I stopped in today and had a turkey BLT. I liked the pesto mayo, but I agree with Shawn D.: the bread seems suspiciously like cheap Schnucks hoagie rolls. Also, the parking lot is tiny and would have been extremely difficult to get out of if mine hadn’t been the only car in the lot.

I dropped in here for dinner after coming back from a Caribbean vacation with a major hankering for a good old americuhn deli sammich. We got the Italian and the French Dip. Go figure. The roast beef on my Dip was super good, and the pickles were a nice touch. However, I wish that cheese came on the Dip. I’d love the option of putting cream cheese on mine. And, I don’t know if you can get your sammiches toasted, but we weren’t asked, and I like my Dips toasty. The Italian sammich was super good, and I was jealous that I didn’t order that instead. It had Italian dressing on it, which I think made it perfecto. It even looked nice and fresh just sitting there, but that might have been my week old international buffet eyes getting off at the sight of a handheld meat ‘n cheese. I’ll def come back for the Italian.

I won’t waste much more of my time on this place… so here is a quick review. After driving by and seeing the outside which looks appealing, I was surprised that the place was dead empty on a busy lunch hour. Empty. The owner /worker were a bit overly excited to greet me, which tells me they are hurting here. Then I look through the very limited(for a sammich shop) menu, and am surprised that everything sounded really good. I ordered the Mikey, which is what I would call a $ 7 canned cranberry sauce cheap bread and even cheaper turkey… just gross. We also got a Italian whaver-they-call-it. The bread looks an awfully like the cheap hostess hoagies, and after eating it I was shocked. If they handed this to a real italian, he would spit it on the floor. The olive dressing was bad, the meat cheap, and just overall left a bad taste in my mouth. The only great thing I can say about this place: They sell Billy Goat Chips. Go to Subway, its better.

Very nice neighborhood atmosphere. I think Tommy himself has even served me a few times I’ve been in, or if not Tommy it was at least the manager. Decently priced as far as sandwich places in the area go, plus it’s walking distance from my house. Definitely try a cupcake if you’ve got a sweet tooth. They are super good and fresh!

After Mayor Slay told me about his brother’s deli, I had to give it a try! If it’s #FGS approved, why wouldn’t I eat here? Tommy’s a bit of a drive from Benton Park(home of the greatest sandwich shop ever — Blues City Deli) but it’s a nice change of scenery. And they don’t have a line coming out of the front door, so that’s definitely a plus. Again, Mayor Slay said that the Uncle Mike’s sandwich was worth trying so that’s what I ordered. It’s turkey, Swiss, lettuce and cranberry sauce on a roll. Anything with cranberry sauce on top is my kind of sandwich! Took my Uncle Mike’s to go and was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up at home. The sandwich was huge! So big, in fact, that I only ate half(it was cut up nicely for me to do so) and ate the rest the next day. It kept nice since there didn’t appear to be any mayo on it. My cat even got a taste of the turkey, a delicacy that she only gets a few times a year. And she liked it, therefore, this sandwich is endorsed by St. Louis City’s Mayor and Shayna the cat! Would certainly go back for a second helping if I was in the area!

Absolutely horrible. They don’t even have a hood system to cook their own food. I ordered a buffalo wrap and it came in a nasty cheap tortilla, with gross frozen chicken. The kind you’d get in the deli section at Schnucks. We also got a roast beef that was made with pressed meat on stale bread, that they forgot the toppings for, even though we paid for them. Do NOT go here.

I am emotionally torn with this review. I wanted to really love this place today. When we saw Tommy’s open about a month ago in our neighborhood, we were excited about another independent deli near the house. Today, The Wife and I decided to finally try this venue. At first glance the corner shop is wide open with a vibrant and clean feel to it. The owner and employee quickly greeted us as we entered and pointed out the large menu board with all of the day’s specials. Wife went with the french dip and broccoli/cheddar soup. I chose the Tommy’s Awesome, a meatball sandwich on round type bread. Wife stated the meat was overcooked and dry making the watery au jus needed, though it fell short. I asked the sandwich maker to add another cheese other than just Parmesan to my meatball meal. There were four half-dollar sized meatballs on the sandwich. The sauce was average but the meatballs tasted frozen and microwaved, kind of like the Subway Sandwiches’ meatball. The bread was soft and tasty. The soup also tasted like the«Just add water» variety at Subway. 2 sandwiches and a bowl of soup cost roughly $ 15 bucks. If the place is open in six months, I’ll go back and assume these problems were due to a new entrepreneur getting their feet wet in a business. I can’t wait to rewrite this review with something more glowing. Good luck Tommy’s Sandwiches.
