Big V’s is a great towny bar, with a Minnesota feel, think flannel shirts, beards, stocking caps and cheap cold ones! They got music here, I have got the chance to play here a few times and dug it every time. They got a pool, darts too! I guess you could call it a dive bar, but I just think it’s kinda classic and old feeling. No so divey! Hell my mom came to watch me play here once, and I think she dug it! So go dig in!

Words that come to mind: Fun, dangerous, loud, drunk, dive, pool table, late last call. Oh and bands. I forgot to say bands. Cheap cover for up and coming local bands. One of the top dive venues in the state.

Went here around 7:00 on a Friday night — tons of older regular people enjoying a drink and some good bar banter. Nothing fancy and a dive bar for certain — this makes me happy. I was not concerned about any trouble from anybody and the atmosphere was chillaxed. They have pretty much anything you would want and the male and female bartenders behind the bar were friendly and welcoming.

If you like your bars with a bit of character, this is one of the only bars in the entire Twin Cities proper that’s even worth going to. It is so hard to find an establishment of booze in this town that has even the smallest hint of life to it that I’m willing to overlook the weird lay-out and the low patronage. I don’t care. Because this is one of the only places in the Twin Cities that doesn’t feel as bland and limp as a wet noodle.

Drinks were a bit expensive for a hole in the wall bar. Bartenders were really friendly and fast so that was great. For aspiring bands, the sound guy doesn’t show up until 10:30 and the equipment including monitors and speakers are very challenging. Sound guy had no idea what he was doing which sucks for the bands. Brings in great talent, but then craps all over them by not having a very good set up. Big V’s has let themselves go…

I can’t speak for it currently, but this place was always known for having challenging and experimental taste in new music. Obviously that makes it very hit and miss, but this might be a good place to keep on your radar if that’s your fancy.

the past couple times i have been to Big Vs the sound has been absolute shit. i can credit this to the sound guy, the same one each time i went, who is either a narcolept or a toe-up junkie. mics were cutting out and shit and i look over at this fool and he is either nodding off or fumbling around on his phone. come on, you could get some ambitious, squeaky clean kid from music tech to run that board for free so we can actually hear the band we came to see. this place is never gonna come back to life.

Maybe I have a couple things to add: 1. Check out the bathroom, you won’t be dissapointed. 2. Notice the entrance to the Midway Sober House next door, Big V’s #1 customers I assume. That is all

This is exactly what rock venues should aspire to. Grimy, cheap drinks, no less than three bands every night, and usually a cheap(5 bucks or less) cover. And for you scenesters out there, that psychedelic-folk-metal-noise group that will be selling out CMJ shows next year and making bloggers freak out has already played there and will be through again shortly. Oh, and their sound system is more than decent. (I almost forgot that your odds are good for seeing no less then four squads and an ambulance arrive at the nearby Trend Bar if you are out on a Friday or Saturday night.)

I cannot express to you how much I love Big V’s. They never shy away from booking anything punk, noisy, experimental, garage, or just plain bizarre. A guarenteed good time, better than neighBORING Turf club! JK, I like the Turf Club too, but not as much. Worth going to St. Paul for!

A good place to catch a show. Also a good place to hang out if you like dive bars and foosball. Seriously though, their music calender is always jam packed with local artists and any given night there are usually between 3 and 5 bands playing. Check it out and stay for a few beers at one of University’s finest.

Big V’s is serious about music and sound. Along with the Turf, Hardees, and midway trannies, Big V’s helps make the Snelling/University corridor awesomely focused on local music and general retardedness. There are other places in town that do this but not with the same awesome retardation and focus. Seriously go there.
