We’ve returned to Tokyo Express for their hibachi steak, chicken, shrimp and veggies. Always reliable and fast whether dining in or picking up to go. A great standby when we’re not cooking at home, it’s late and we’re all hungry for something light and tasty.

This place is exceptional if you know what to expect. The entrees start out at $ 5 – 6 for your choice of meat vegetables and fried rice with several options to choose from. The sushi is unexpectedly good for this caliber of restaurant, I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality and options. Service is generally fast and friendly. Don’t go here thinking it’s going to be a full on Japanese steakhouse experience and you can’t go wrong. Great bang for the buck.

ugh! what a disappointment! Tried this place a couple of times during the week and it was so-so. The Hibachi steak had more mushrooms then steak and the rice was tasteless, the sushi was only low to average in quality and taste(The spicy tuna had more panko then tuna). Today we tried the buffet wow that was bad. The sushi, well I think you could find better sushi at a west coast gas station then here. They do not season their rice! It is just plain rice, and not even sushi rice. The shrimp tempura roll had some kind of dark matter in the roll that was supposed to be shrimp but I’m not sure, the spicy chicken had TOMUCHPANKOFILLER! everything else was bland and boring. I went to get some miso soup –lukewarm at best– I noticed something at the bottom of the bowl so i got another bowl an realized that the had put tofu, seaweed and green onion into to each bowl then STACKANOTHERBOWLINSIDEOFTHAT that can not be safe. You also get an order from the grill with the buffet the steak to mushroom ratio was 1:4 and the largest piece of meat was no bigger than a child’s fingernail. And again the unseasoned tasteless rice. I’m not one to mention the décor or anything like that, but was asked to mention that nothing fricking works in the women’s bathroom the door doesn’t lock, the toilet doesn’t flush right, and the soap and paper towels dispenser don’t work either. One last thing about this place before I wash my hands of it. Ms. waitress please stop calling people«love» it is rude and condescending!

Crab rangoons were spoiled. Food was not worth the money. Place was dirty. Will never go again!

My absolute favorite place to eat in Salem! The sushi is out of this world and you can’t beat the prices on anything you get there. All the food is so good and the people that work there are so friendly!

I have eaten here for years. I have personal relationships with most of the staff and they are all very good. Sushi is okay. Hibachi is great. They never mess up my order

Typical run of the mill Japanese cuisine. Sushi was definitely on the lower end of the scale in quality, but the regular entrees were above average for the price. I would not go here for the sushi, but it is a decent lunch spot for one of their combination entrees. Quick service, friendly enough, nothing really outstanding about this place.

I will eat here if I want a cheap sushi roll or quick hibachi lunch. Not the most extravagant food but will satisfy on a low budget.

The food is GROSS!!! Very salty with way too much sauce and often overcooked, tough meat. Stay away!

Wow. what happen here? This used to be an Ok quick, clean, tasty, affordable alternative for nights I just could not bring myself to cook. Not special, but Ok. But Now… Bad tempered owners, hard edamame,(owner argued and told me basically that I did not know what I was talking about and stuck her fingers in it and I had to tell her again, that I did not want it. Dressed with nothing but tons of table salt). The meal less than substandard and came with the wrong sauce. Veggies — mushy and probably frozen. Rice had a very strange flavor. Everything seems to have taken a drop in quality. Must have changed owners. No ABC licence anymore. Folks this is no way to keep or regain customers, We should have known when we saw the carlot empty. Never again, Sorry I should have stayed at home and cooked. Would have given a big old Zero but it not an option. Keep an eye out for under new management sign, then check to make sure there is new management.

This is your typical, medium grade, quick and simple Japanese Express type place. Medium size dining room with old tables/seats, a couple TVs and some native decorations. Quick, friendly and attentive service combined with a generic and appropriately priced menu make this Tokyo Express a simple and efficient Asian meal. I had the steak and chicken combo with extra rice, enjoyed it and left full for just under $ 13. In a city with limited dinner options, I would eat here again.

Great place for a quick lunch. Not really dinner appropriate for me but good hibachi. The carrots on the side are huge, sweet, and delicious. They do well for Salem.

Having become addicted to Sushi in the Roanoke Valley has its downside. There are very few places that offer good Sushi. Luckily Tokyo Express is close to home in Salem. Yes, they are primarily a hibachi/Japanese stakehouse fair without the flair and knife work. That food is also great. The staff is always super friendly and attentive. The food is fresh and prepared with care. Keep up the good work folks.
