Awesome spot! We found some ginormous avocados and delicious PR snacks and sodas. We found everything we needed for pasteles except for the annatto seeds. HEB carries annatto powder in their spice department.

It’s a great place to find authentic Puerto Rican products. The man who owns it is fom PR. He was in the military, retired here & opened the store. Prices are reasonable.

Boricua — a term which refers, loosely, to the Puerto Rican people — is also the name of one of my favorite ethnic markets! Housed in its original location in the newly renovated strip center at Harry Wurzbach and Rittiman, the store specializes in Caribbean products. Prices are fair, and inventory is good — especially considering the size of the store: shelves are stocked with canned and packaged goods; the front window is lined with potted plants, like aloe and the fuzzy, big-leafed Cuban oregano; at the back of the store are freezers stocked with locally-produced empanadas and banana-leaf-wrapped tamales(heat ‘n’eat); next to that, the refrigerator cases with more vegetables, meats and authentic condiments. And best of all? Last winter, the kindly proprietors brought in and sold Mandarin oranges from a tree in their yard: 8 for a dollar! Sadly, I was able to buy only one batch before we had the first hard freeze — but I’m certainly going to remember to stock up THIS coming winter! Parking can be a challenge when the adjacent Longhorn Café‘ is busy(I suspect that’s one reason the other longtime tenants moved to the opposite end of the center), but otherwise you can usually park directly in front of the store.

This small market has been at this location for many years, which should show they’re doing something right since all the surrounding businesses have disappeared! The couple that owns this place is very friendly. They stock a variety of products from Central America, not just Puerto Rico. Comparing them to other Spanish markets, I would say their prices run just a little higher. Along with food, they also carry a few shirts, beaded flags, and other trinkets to show off your latin pride. If you don’t see a specific product just ask the owner and he’ll let you know if he can get it in for you. The store is well kept and sure to carry something that’ll catch your eye.
