Brake Check

This was an interesting visit. When I arrived it was immediately told and asked of me if I knew they were open on Sundays. Following that it had been so slow they made very little sales and hope today (Monday) was busier to help make it up. I was in ONLY to get my rear brakes changed and my oil changed. But every so often the guy working the counter would ask me about this or that about my car and how they could fix, change/​replace for said amount. It definitely felt he was trying to make up his lost sales with me. I had to say no thanks, I just want what I asked for done and get me back on the road. As I sat quietly reading a book he kept making comments about me. Basically he was watching me while I was reading. It was odd and uncomfortable. I was becoming desperate for more customers to entertain him in his boredom. Sadly they still had my car. Visiting this location was convenient for me and after reading Unilocal reviews for the most part they were positive. But who could have predicted this? I try to be friendly but I guess to some it means weak and will buy whatever if our sales are low. When getting my keys back the salesman tried one more time to tell me something else wrong with my car and attempt to make another sale. I could only say thank you and will try to get back as soon as possible. Drove away happy for only the work done. For any additional work, I’ll be going elsewhere. Hopefully not all their salesmen are this way, and if so they definitely need to back off a bit. I’m happy and giving 3 stars for the mechanic who did the hard work and got me back on the road. Negative 2 stars for the pushy salesman who kept trying to make up lost sales with me, and made waiting for my car awkward.

Great place to get your car serviced! The facility is nice and clean and well maintained. I went in to get my oil changed and an alignment done… They had me in and out in no time flat…

I had a wonderful experience at this location. I had a free inspection and was offered a ride home and back! I came later to get my brakes done and felt they were honest and treated me with respect. Thank you for a job well done!

Beware! Dropped off my car for an alignment. left and went across the street to pump gas. seen all the employees gathering around my car and i could see my side skirt cracked. watched the mgr walk inside then my phone rang. It was the mgr telling me my car wouldnt fit on the ramp. went to pick it up and asked about my cracked side skirt then he had the nerve to say «wasnt it like that when you came in» told him i sat across the street watching them then he says with attitude «bring me 3 estimates» this is a very shady place .be careful

Having 2 older cars, ’07 and an ’08, we wanted to find a cost effective way to have service done on our out of warranty cars. We decided on BrakeCheck. Bad call! After 4 trips (the initial and 3 returns) the problem of squeaking brakes in both cars and a shimmy on one, the only thing we go out of the service is a lot of headaches. We were told multiple times that the squeaking was because of dust in the drums, but for +80,000 miles, both our cars never squeaked. To solve the problem, they said that we should come in every 10,000 miles to have the brake dust cleared (for a $). Treated as simpletons and not being worked with on the warranties we had, we will be going to a real mechanic rather than a quickie service with B team mechanics. This is my first Unilocal as I believe that only exemplary or terrible service should be recognized. Unfortunately, the service was not exemplary.

To explain my situation… I’m in San Antonio, TX for Army training at Fort Sam Houston (2 ½−3 months). I drove from San Francisco, CA to have the convenience of having my vehicle to explore Texas when I have time off. This is where my car troubles come in.
One early morning, I started to back out of my parking spot when my car sounded like it ran over a baby seal (the squeaky brakes were that loud). It brought unnecessary attention to me and my car, and I was quite embarrassed, as my colleagues were clearly judging me as a Californian who doesn’t care about the environment or his car. The thing was that after a minute or so of driving, the squeaky brakes went away. So a few days go by with the same issues in the morning. I thought it was the different, humid and cold Texas weather that was inflicting on my brakes. To an extent, it was. But I decided not to risk having more damage to my potentially worn brakes, so I took it to a brake shop called Brake Check.
Now not being from Texas, I didn’t know where to go and felt like a lost puppy. I walked in and explained my situation, and had the store owner and crew perform a free brake check. Glad it was free, because come to find out my front brakes were in good condition, but it was the rear brakes that were in not so good shape. He explained what needed to be done with my situation, and me not knowing much about brake problems, I trusted him because he is the expert here. I knew I wasn’t getting stiffed with unnecessary adjustments and parts, so I agreed to have my brakes and brake fluid replaced on the spot, same day. That to me was awesome, as back home a mechanic would look at me silly if I asked to have my car fixed same day without charging more. The store owner even gave me a military discount, which I did not ask for at first. He also recommended cool spots around San Antonio where the fun was, since I’m not from around here. In about 75 minutes, my car was as good as new, and the squeaky brakes were gone!
I was so content with the quality service and friendliness from a shop nowhere near my home, and I’m pretty reserved when it comes to trusting other people from another part of the country I’ve never ventured in. My car runs and brakes smooth now, and for a very reasonable price. I’m happy I found this place, and highly recommend them for any brake issues. They tell you what needs to be done straight up, no hassling. Thanks Brake Check, you made San Antonio feel a little more like home for the next 2 – 3 months with the friendliness and hospitality!

Contrary to what the comment section describes as my concerns being addressed. Nope non were! No refunds no discounts just excuses
After I posted this I was contacted by break check for a free oil change. Almost 9 mo later. I thankfully declined as I just do not trust their service.

My husband and I took our Jeep in to get the brakes checked and redone. One would think, given the name, that it would be a simple process that they do all day, everyday.
Originally, we thought it was a great experience. Brakes were done, price was exactly what they said it should be. But-​2 days later, my car began to make a terrible noise. People were staring. It was uncool, so back we went.
The manager called us later to let us know that a crucial piece of the brakes had not been redone… it was simply ‘forgotten’, and would cost quite a bit of money to fix. To make up for the oversight, they offered to give us a discounted rate on the lifetime alignment deal. Later, when I returned (instead of my husband), the guy at the counter tried to charge me all over again for the ENTIRE brake job (which we had already paid for several days prior). I had to explain myself multiple times. The discounted price was also not given to me since I had not been the one to have the conversation with the manager and the guy at the counter ‘could not honor that price’.
All in all, it was an awful experience. There are plenty of other places in town for us to take our business.

Do anything you can to avoid this place like the plague.
This place was without compare the worst automotive repair experience of my 30 years. I had gone to this place for a brake job, but quickly discovered my power steering rack needed replacing. They assured me this repair would be no problem for them. They have their own alignment bay, and in theory, should be adequate to the task. I was dead wrong.
First, after several days delay, the power steering rack they installed was done improperly, and broke yet again. Power steering fluid everywhere. A total loss. In addition, the idiot who broke my new power steering rack also took it upon himself to turn my steering wheel while decoupled from the rack. Any semi-​competent mechanic knows this breaks a vital sensor in the steering wheel known as the clock spring. When this is broken you airbags can fail to deploy, deploy without warning and all of your dash warning lights are lit up like Christmas.
They first insisted it had «come in that way», before finally admitting that it was their fault. The district manager was now involved. He was no more helpful than the rest of his staff. My car had now been in this place two weeks, and he refused to offer me an apology or a rental car.
Finally, my car was finished and I was told to pick it up. After driving about one block I knew something was terribly wrong. My car was very difficult to control, and making terrible noises in turns. Sure enough, they had either completely neglected to align the front end as they assured me they had, had done it so badly they should be fired or were simply trying to kill me and my family.
I took it back, insisted on the manager doing the work himself, and am finally in possession of a drivable car almost three weeks into the «repairs».
Brake Check does not ASE certify ANY of their mechanics. In conversation with one of the technicians I discovered it was actively discouraged by upper management to prevent them from finding other work. The result are incompetent and jaded workers who broke more than they fixed.

Brake Check has lost me as a customer! After over 10 years of being a loyal repeat customer, I couldn’t believe my experience with Brake Check on Austin Hwy today. I dropped of my car at 8 am today for a 9:30 appt which I scheduled last week. No other car was in the store. After several calls during the day wherein the manager kept me abreast of the the status he told me the car would be ready later today. I told him I needed it by 4:30 because I had a 5:15 appt. He assured me that was no problem. I arrived at 4:35 to find my car still on the lift with all 4 tires off. He told me it would be ready soon and he cashed me out so I would be ready to go. 5:00 — not ready, still on the lift, tires off. 5:30 — not ready, still on the lift, tires off. I ask him what’s the delay? He tells me there was a problem with the one of the shocks, will only be a few more minutes. Hey, here’s an idea — get some of those guys pushing a broom, cleaning up so they can leave at 6 and have them help the tech working on my car so I can get out of there. I watched 3 guys clock out and leave while I’m sitting there. 5:50 — not ready, he tells me last tire is being mounted, 2 more minutes. 6:00 — not ready, tech has to test drive it. 6:15 I get my car back. I lost 1:45 of billable work time, I pay over $ 1,400 and he offers me a free oil change for my trouble. Like a $ 30 oil change is going to make up for him lying to me about how much longer I was going to have waste sitting there in his waiting room. It would probably take him 3 hours to change the oil. What a waste of time. Brake Check had my car for 10 h 15 m to change the shocks! I’ll never go back!

Prompt and friendly service. I walked in; got information about services; and my vehicle was in a bay about 5 minutes later. The shop manager (Greg) was very helpful and thorough informing me about necessary services. He wasn’t pushy or trying to make a sale like many other places that I’ve visited in the past. Provided various options that allowed me to not feel like I was getting «shafted».

I was pleased with the great service at this location. They squeezed me into their busy schedule for an oil change on a Sunday. The manager was very knowledgable and courteous. He explained everything clearly and made great recommendations. In addition,

Great service and very helpful, friendly staff. I originally went to Discount Tire Co. for a set of new tires. They improperly balanced the tires, and then refused to mount the new tires on my car because I have a set of very narrow spacers on my front hubs. So I went down the street to Brake Check and they took care of everything, properly balanced the tires, and even stayed late to make sure my car was finished on the same day I brought it in. Thanks!
