This place has let us down on too many occasions. Pricey & bad service! We keep going back in hopes that it is just a fluke(and because it’s nearby). Today the sweet tea was slimy and there were lots of bones in my BBQ sandwich. I let the assistant manager know but all she said was, «Oh ok, we will change out our bucket».(Ugh! SLIME!!!) No apologies or an attempt to make it right. I had almost forgotten about the time before when the employees were all passing around the tip jar, and playing around while customers sat in the diner. We watched them from the drive thru as they served people down the café line without washing their hands after touching dollar bills. Gross! We waited forever for our food as we watched them giggle & play and only 2 out of 6 was working. I guess they couldn’t see us. When we got home we were missing food & a few side items. We’re done with this place. They need a strong manager to keep this place and its employees in line. Disappointing as we had high hopes for this venue.

The interior and exterior of this place are both really nice with a lot of fun touches. Unfortunately the food and service were not great, and that is what is most important. There is a cafeteria-like steam table, only it’s not really a line to order as you go along. That would make too much sense. Instead you order at the cash register and they give you a number and then bring out your food eventually. There were several workers standing around behind the line but, even though the place was not busy, it took over ten minutes for them to bring our food out — food that was already cooked and on the steam table. My family used to run a bbq restaurant many years ago, and the whole point of the line is to have things freshly cut and get them out quickly. This place did neither. The food was hit or miss, and all lukewarm, not hot like fresh stuff should be. I thought the lean brisket tasted good but there was no smoke ring, and some of it was sliced super thin and some super thick. The sausage was okay but a little dry. My dad had the pulled pork and it didn’t have anything on it and basically looked like a pile of dry meat scraps, not appetizing. The gravy was good but underneath that, the mashed potatoes were dry and had no flavor. The creamed corn seemed to be just corn, warm milk, and sugar, there was no real seasoning to it and I still can’t figure out what the cream sauce was supposed to be. Neither of us ate more than a bit or two of that. The bbq sauces were good, but be sure to get the ones out of the hot pots near the drinks — the container on the table was impossible to get any out of because sauce dried in the bottle top and clogged the opening(gross! we even tried to get another bottle from two other tables and had the same issue). I did think the volume of the music plus the multiple tvs were just too much. There were even two tvs in the bathroom. I really wanted to like this place, it’s close to my house and on my way home from work, but I don’t think I’ll go back. Prices are a bit high and it definitely wasn’t worth the money for the food served.

NEVER again! Stopped by on the way back into San Antonio after a day of soccer out at Specht Fields. Thought we’d give Choke Canyon BBQ a try. A handful of people were inside. We placed our order and grabbed a seat. After 15 minutes or so only one of our plates arrived(my 3 meat plate). All plate contents were lukewarm and the french fries seemed reheated… so I took the plate back up to report the matter and briefly commented about food temperature safety to which the employee didn’t really seem to care but said she’d fix it. A couple of minutes later I went up to see what was entailed with fixing my plate and the employee handed me my new plate but with smaller portions. She stated the meat was cut fresh. Seeing her sincerity in question I reached out and touched the meat to find it lukewarm. Again I tried to explain food temperature safety to no avail. I’m pretty pissed now. I told my wife that I don’t trust this place and would rather not end up sick from food poisoning. She hadn’t received her plate yet but agreed and we just left. On the way out I again commented on the food temperature and seeing that they had no care in the world to make anything right, we just left. I had no patience to deal with a refund. F ‘em I had had enough. I’ll chalk up the loss. This place is permanently off my restaurant list.

Good BBQ but pretty pricey. For ½ rack robs and bbq sandwich it was $ 30. Robs were super thick and meaty. Service was nice — restaurant was clean.

The restaurant is a cafeteria style BBQ. The brisket was tasty, but I didn’t really feel excited about any of the items offered. Bread, pickles, sauce and other items are in a buffet bar for you to pick up. The ribs were not fall off the bone and the brisket was not as flavorful as I would have liked. I enjoy sides, but these were pretty bland. The creamed corn was chunky and not flavorful with cream. The okra was rather soggy instead of crispy and tasty. For a small restaurant, I was expecting better flavor and food. I probably wouldn’t go back. Price is average. The dining atmosphere was nice. Comfortable seating and nice TVs.

It was our first and I would say it was so so. Sides were excellent however our brisket and turkey was served ice cold. Glad we went for our first visit however not sure we would go back.

I ordered the 3 meat platter and man oh man was it delicious! The smoked beans are to die for. The potato salad wasn’t the absolute best but it still tasted really good. It was also very fairly priced. I would say my only complaint were the chicken tenders.(My child’s meal) They weren’t the best. But this place after all is a BBQ joint and if that’s what you’re going for I would totally recommend it. :)

This place is GREAT !! Fried Catfish plate is HUGE !! Potato salad &BBQ beans are great ! Green beans could use some work… Fried gator bites are pretty damn good ! Brisket, turkey & pulled pork are all good !! Only complaint is the tartor & cocktail sauce… Some advise… Put some love into a new recipe for these two sauces… Your food is way too good to use the current tartor & cocktail sauce… We will be back probably twice a month(if not more) !!

Smoked on site barbecue. It’s the real deal. I give it four stars because of the value. I don’t feel like I’m overpaying for some steamed meat. I had the brisket barbecue sandwich the brisket was fairly lean and moist and barbecue sauce that came on the side had a nice mixture of sweetness and tanginess.

If you want a fat sandwich, go to this place. 50% of the bbq sandwich was disgusting fat that they tried to hide inside a bun. The rest of the customers who eat inside the restaurant get the good stuff, while carry out customers see the prize at home. Trust this review, they are 2 for 2, same story both times. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

I would’ve given them 5 stars but they left out an item from my order. However, I called and they are willing to rectify the situation. Great tasting food! The BBQ is gooood!

First time here. Interesting place. I would put this place in the upscale bbq joint category. Food is good and the price is good as well. A 5 star rating is possible after a few more visits.

Good bbq place. Kids actually ate the food which is rare for us. Chicken tenders appear to be home made not just crappy frozen McD’s-style. Got the lean brisket and turkey both good. Mashed potatoes and potato salad both above average for sides.

Ok food is good but they have messed up the last 3 outta 4 drive thru orders and dont know how to make it right for the person who didnt get what they paid for the 1st time and has to soend extra time and gas going back up there only to get what they wanted to begin with. Real cust service is giving the cust something extra and replacing the entire order once maybe twice. They opened a place down blanco that always packed choke canyon could learn alot from the other bbq place. MAYBESOMELIVEMUSICONTHEWEEKENDSWOULDBRINGINMOREBIZ.

A little overpriced, but one of the only places on the worst side of San Antonio to get actual BBQ. The rich people are intolerable with tastes to match, so most other flavors in the area are buried under pretentious ingredients and wine. It wasn’t my favorite and the general aesthetic of the building is obnoxious, but the food kept me from murdering a yuppie that day. Under normal circumstances it’d probably be a 3 star joint, but keeping me out of prison is worth an extra star. Choke Canyon has a good selection of veggies and plain-jane brisket. The pulled BBQ is about the type you’d expect from a food truck. No need to bother with side sauce. Fried goods were cooked in clean oil and came hot, no leftovers under a heating lamp. No major complaints here.

Not impressed. The food was just ok. Kind of like Bill Miller BBQ but with a fake smokey flavor. The french fries were the best items

Came here for my daughter’s soccer team dinner and team meeting. My family had a variety from sausage, brisket to the chicken along with a variety of sides. Food and sides tasted good and had flavor. The thing they couldn’t get right was getting the orders right. The one kid running the food to the tables was lost! I don’t think he ever delivered a complete order… family after family was complaining or questioning their orders. It took about 5 trips to our table to get our order right. Place was clean and neatly decorated with stuffed animals. The one plus was they had soccer on a couple of tvs.

Went during lunch at around 1215pm and there was no line at the drive through and then dining room was not busy. I ordered the three meat plate with brisket, sausage, and pork ribs with potato salad and smoked baked beans as my side. At the window I paid and to my surprise, considering how slow they were, waited approx 15 minutes for my order(they stated that the meat was not ready?). The brisket was very dry and lacked any flavor, pork ribs were tender but underwhelming in flavor, and the sausage and sides were ok. In general all the BBQ from this joint tasted like it was cooked in the oven and reheated in the microwave when I ordered it, evidenced by the brown oxidation on my brisket… I have uploaded pictures of the ribs and brisket to this site

Average brisket but not worth a special trip. First time visit at drive thru. The pulled pork was dissapointing it was bland and very dry, the moist or marbled brisket was average but tender with a decent smoky ring. The lumpy mashed potatoes were good but the slight amount of gravy was a bit too salty. Their stewed tomatoes with green beans were just ok nothing special. If you go the drive thru route ask for extra BBQ sauce they only give you one very small container. Their two meat plate with two sides onion and pickle slices two slices of white bread and no drink is right at $ 14.00 which is about average for most BBQ joints, though they claim their prices are lower than most.

After going here multiple times, I’ve realized consistency is not their thing. Sometimes the sides are bland and other times too salty. At one time you could get a great price on a lunch special, but only at the drive thru! Now the specials don’t exist like they use to. More than once I’ve had a sandwich with what tasted like microwaved bread… rubbery and stale texture. As much as I’ve been displeased with Bill Miller lately, I now understand why they’re so popular and this place isn’t.
