The hotdog is no longer just an American stable but a food item loved the world over. It can be as simple as one with mustard and ketchup in some one’s backyard. Or it can be enjoyed in the fanciest restaurant with truffles or other condiments. Recently I have noticed its resurgence at many spots, particularly on food truck’s menus. Rocker Hot Dogz is a makeshift vendor that makes hotdogs supposedly in that same tradition. Before I continue any further with my review I must confess I am certainly not an aficionado in the affairs of the almighty wiener and bun. However, I remember the one’s I enjoyed in my youth from Coney Island downtown and GW Jrs. And more recently a Mexican style one I had at a local event. All of these were excellent and I am using these as point of references. But Rocker Hot Dogz, at least for me were just okay. Firstly, the hotdog I had was lukewarm at best. When I bite into a hotdog I like the sensation of seeing the steam and that crisp sound, that is the hallmark of a good one. When I bit into it the experience was no greater or lesser than one you might typically get from a store down the street. Secondly, it had toppings that did not add to the overall flavor of it. For me it appeared to be layers of goop and a purple substance on a bun and a wiener. Rather than enhancing its taste it seemed to merely mask all flavors. While I did appreciate its colorful presentation, it just seemed more cosmetic rather than what was the actual reality. The ironic thing is that months earlier I tried their tater tots as an appetizer and they were absolutely fantastic. But their much lauded hotdogs, at least for me, were neither good nor bad. Just alright. As far as my tastes are concerned I always ask myself a simple question, «Will I think about this experience minutes, hours, days, months even years later?» Sometimes the answer is yes and in this case, it is no. I do like that they have incorporated a punk, rock attitude into their gourmet hot dogs. But my liking of the play of The Ramones into their logo and their actual hot dogs is where my opinion parts ways.

How the heck do you find this place? I am aggravated beyond words. We tried finding this truck on numerous occasions to no avail! Nobody ever answers the phone and they aren’t where they say they are? I am so frustrated! We even called the food truck website and they said oh they are over here, went there and no truck!

YOTHISGUYROCKS! I was about to write review for a completely different place and saw RockerDogz on here! This guy is the real deal and has really found his gourmet niche. I got the chicago dog the first time i was lucky enough to run across RockerDogz at a small fundraising event and both me AND my wife went back for seconds… If you see RockerDogz ANYWHERE stop what your doing and treat yourself to a truly gourmet dog

Chef Kris is the man. Plain and simple, he knows his stuff and will satisfy your tastebuds beyond belief. The Thai Kickboxer is my drug. Chef Kris has truly changed the way things have been viewed for so long. He is a great guy and easy to talk to. The few times I have been just talking to him is an experience. Find RockerDogz, and get the combo. It will change your life forever. I just wish he would open his own restaraunt and make it permanent.

I wondered to myself for the longest time, «how can a weiner be made gourmet?» RockerDogz can answer that. The Thai Kickboxer that many other Unilocalers have mentioned is a game changer. All the Thai flavors you know and love wrapped into one easy to pick-up foldable food. Then there are the tots. Drizzled with a spicy mayo, the perfectly crisp little suckers got me singing the same tune as Napolean Dynamite–«Get your own tots!» Seriously, I’m a sharer, but not when it comes to those. I want them forever. Oh, and then just the other night I experienced the Bella Blue. That’s right, blue cheese, thick bacon chunks, a red wine reduction sauce. I die. Chef Kris, you are awesome. I will follow you wherever you and your efficient little hot dog stand go.

I hate hot dogs, seriously. To me, they’ve always been salty messengers of death, or a reminder that you’re poor. Not these. Not Rocker Dogz. They’re not even in the same arena of what I knew to be hot dogs. Kris makes little masterpieces of meat. They’re delicious. From the Thai Kickboxer(my favorite) to the Chicano, to even the humble tots, I’ve never had anything that wasn’t delicious. If you notice, I’ve not posted a picture of any of the dogs. That’s because the time from service to shoving the food in my face doesn’t allow for photography. They’re so good, I can’t be bothered to wait. They’re so good, I had two. Just tonight. Do yourself a favor and swing by Streat Eat on a Wednesday night, grab a beer, then a hot dog. Chat with Kris while he’s making your dinner. He has some interesting stories to share and is a very humble guy. A guy that makes stellar hot dogs.

WOW, OMG, holy cow, what else can be said about RockerDogz? I’ve had the Thai Kick Boxer dog, the Chicano dog, and the«gourmet» tater tots. I SWEAR, this stuff is addictive — I find myself craving it throughout the week — ITISTHATGOOD! These are the most creatively made hot dogs you have ever had. It’s not just a bunch of stuff piled on a dog; these toppings actually compliment each other and make them outta this world! I find them at the Revolution Room on Broadway every Wednesday night. Check their Facebook page to find out where they are on other nights.

The Bella Bleu. My hot dog lifemate. I never thought I would have a hot dog lifemate until she and I met on that fateful evening. Read on, my friends… I sauntered over to Kris’ cart. I told that fine gentleman I wanted Bella Bleu and without any hesitation, he put her together for me… I was breathless with anticipation. Sweat drops sliding down the sides of my temple as I watched m’lady dress in her Wednesday best… she winked at me as Kris helped her slide each of her garments on… the bleu cheese sauce… the yellow mustard… and the red wine reduction sauce drizzled all over her smokin’ hot, body… the bacon hugging her ever so lightly — almost veil-like. M’lady loves to tease me… I whispered in her ear, «I want to do things to you that are considered illegal in at least 15 different countries, baby.» Bella smiled wryly and said, «DOIT.»

Rocker Dogz is AMAZING. I am so glad that I took fellow Unilocalers’ advice and gave them a try. Dogz will run you $ 6.00 and for a combo with a drink and tots you’ll spend $ 10.00 but I promise that your money will be well spent. The owner is super chill and is very humble even with all of his accomplishments. Look for good things in the future for this great street vendor(hint: The Korova). Although all of the dogz on the menu sounded amazing I ended up going with the Thai Kickboxer combo. The dog had such intense flavor and was not at all heavy like I was expecting. The cabbage and cilantro marry wonderfully with the cucumber, sriracha, and wonderfully toasty bun. The tots were heaven. Extra crispy, but not burnt, doused in the most divine chipotle mayo, and then dusted with parmesan cheese. Yum. The light dog balanced out wonderfully with the super filling tots, washed down with an orange soda. The perfect summer meal. I was just recently introduced to StrEAT Eat(on Wednesday nights outside of the Revolution Room) where I first tried my first Rockerdog but this will for sure not be my last taste.

Allow me to preface this review by admitting that I hate hotdogs. The main reason is because I equate hotdogs with being broke and one time my Dad told me they make the weenies with the backside of a pig. But after catching some flack for side-stepping the Rockerdogz cart a few times, I decided it was time I put aside my bad relationship with the snack and dived into one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. I decided on the Chicano Dog mainly because I like saying the word«chicano» and a situation rarely arises where I get to do so. It was $ 6 and after my initial thought that this could have bought six packages of Bar S weenies, I realized I would have paid much more for this delicious meal. First, the toppings. Instead of the Wolf brand chili of my childhood, this dog was topped with a borracho beans/chili mix along with sweet carmalized onions, ooey gooey queso, fresh pico, spicy salsa and finished off with crema. Seriously, if I was served just the toppings alone, I still would have given it a 5 star rating! The hotdog itself was tasty and while I’ve decided not to ask what exactly comprises the meat in it, I imagine it was something of much higher quality than pig keister. Thanks Rockerdogz, you’ve changed my outlook of the hotdog and I will be back for more!

Dem… Dogz. I’d heard of them, but I’d been unenthusiastic, and slightly perplexed at the enthusiasm. But now, I truly wish I could jump in a time machine, go back 7 months ago, find my former self and back hand her… me…myself. I would say, «Look here, sweet b*tch, You are living an unfulfilled life.» and drive myself to Texas Trash Clothing and purchase those delicously delicious dogs. First of all, they look AMAZING. Like tiny wittle paintings, painstakingly crafted for eyegasms the likes of which I’ve never experienced when looking at lunch. I mean… The hot dogs, they are pretty. There’s no other word for it. Then the TASTE. I ordered the Thai Kick Boxer, and it is so aptly named! Pungent and sweet chili sauce, crispy red cabbage, and that warm buttery bun. Mmmmm… I’d spank them buns, I’d spank them soft and delicious buns all day if I could. Everything is presented perfectly, and simply with two napkins and a lil aluminum foil boat, with Mr. Kris, the proprietor, generally being humble and awesome, while you make ungodly sounds wolfing down his colorful culinary creations. Oh, you ever heard of BYOB for a Hot Dog Vendor? NOYOUHAVEN’T. But, that’s just how Rocker Dogz rolls, no big deal. Better than what I expected, more than you could hope for, Everything you need in a hot dog vendor.

This is what happens when an old childhood friend grows up and does good. RockerDogz has taken the classic American favorite, the hot dog, and transformed it in to an adult culinary treat. I admit i headed to strEAT Eat mainly to see if all the great things i had heard about this cart were correct. So i started with the Thai Kick Boxer Rocker. So good, the buttery garlic toasted bun and the sweet crunchy with a subtle spicey bite. Before i left i had to bite one more dog. So i opted for the Bella Bleu Rocker. Again the toasted bun and bleu cheese and bacon is the adult flavor equivalent of pb & j. Do not walk here, run! This is what a hot dog can be when it reaches full potential. If only they had foot longs!

Not your ballpark hot dog! I am not generally a hot dog fan but Rocker has changed that. I actually look forward to the nights I am up late enough to catch him(yeah I’m getting old). Fortunately for me he is at StrEAT Food, at Revolution Room on Broadway, Weds nights from 6 – 10. Rocker has all beef gourmet hot dogz but as I said in the opening they are not your ball park dogz. They are loaded with a variety of toppings and full of flavor. Normally he has 3 choices. Bella Bleu, Chicano and my favorite the Thai Kickboxer. It will knock you out(sorry I had to). You cant go wrong with any of them but be warned the Kickboxer has some subtle spice that will catch you off guard.

I was looking forward to writing this review, as I had some great pictures to upload… Then my memory card became corrupted and I was bummed, but then I found a recovery tool that got the pictures back, so now I’m happy again! So here I am, extolling the virtues of Kris and his Dogz, and I have the pictures to back it up. It was actually on an earlier trip to SA that I heard of RockerDogz, and missed it. I made a mental note to be sure not to miss it next time. My opportunity came sooner than I expected, and barely a month later I was back in SA with my brother. The whole act of figuring out where Kris will be is part of the fun, especially when you don’t know SA all that well. The cool thing is, no matter where it is, there’s bound to be place to grab a beer. On our night he was outside The Korova( ), but since Kris was not quite set up when we got there, we ended having a few beers at Bond’s 007 Rock Bar( ), which is on the same block. This location was also great as it’s a pretty easy walk along the river from anywhere on the Riverwalk. I went for the Thai Kick Boxer Rocker: Topped with sliced tomato, pickled serranos, mustard, a slaw of red cabbage, mint and cilantro leaves and a lime sesame vinaigrette, cucumber slices and several drops of sriracha. I think there was some sweet chile sauce in there too. My brother went for the newly added Nori Rocker, with seaweed salad, crab-meat, avocado, wasabi mayo and nori strips. Both Dogz were amazing and well worth the effort to find Kris’ location du soir. Seeing the whole process unfold and watch Kris work his culinary magic was a real treat(literally and figuratively). I can’t image a trip to SA now without seeking out Kris(hint: Facebook and/or Twitter is your friend) and seeing what new creations might be on the menu… Thanks Kris!

I must say, I’m liking this new gourmet food stand representing San Antonio! I’m impressed with the creativity and flavor that comes from these hot dogs. I first tried RockerDogz during a charity event at Rackspace while listening to a very entertaining band called Spazmatics. For being a tiny stand, this place offers bold ingredients that are ready to conquer your palates. Now, lets cut to the chase, no pun intended, about these crazy dogs. Thai Kick Boxer Rocker: 4⁄5 — I definitely see where the name comes from. This particular hot dog is packed with a ton of flavor. It was delicious. The toppings on top made it memorable. The sweet chili sauce, pickled peppers, and mint cilantro lime sesame vinaigrette added the sweet and spicy kick to the dish. Then, the Thai red cabbage and sliced tomato added great texture and helped cut down the tang and balanced all the flavors together. A negative, would be the«dog» itself. I wish they could use a better quality meat that is more beefy and thick. If that can be done, then this one be a stellar dog! Chicano Style Rockero: 3.5÷5 — this is one messy, but appetizing dog! It’s a classic take on your everyday chili-cheese dog but with a creative twist to it. The chili was flavorful and was well complimented by the queso blanco cheese on top. It was savory and flavorful. For texture, the caramelized onions and pico de gallo were a great addition. Finally, on top of all that — the Mexican Crema added a very subtle rich and creamy flavor. Only criticism would again be the hot dog itself and the fact that this dish is a bit on the heavy side and the flavors are easily muddled together. Besides improving the quality of the beef hot dogs, I think if the Chef at RockerDogz can incorporate fresh homemade butter-toasted buns versus standard plain(what seemed store bought) buns, then this place will be a force to be reckoned with! Overall, I’m a very satisfied customer and can not wait for what other ingenious hot dogs this place can come up with. I’m sure as the reviews grows for this place, the demand will grow. With that in mind — I hope they continue to be a maverick in creating one-of-a-kind rockin’ hot dogs!
