Love love love. Never disappointed! I’ve tried the blackened shrimp and salmon, and they’re heavenly, but I have to say the brown rice & beans alone are to die for! Can’t wait to taste the whole menu because this place is a true San Antonio gem.

Blackened Salmon and a Sweet Potato cupcake. Doesn’t get much better than this. Family owned and operated which is an added plus. They’re doing it the right way too!

Omg this place is amazing. Let’s start at the top. It’s on a pretty deserted street and in a shack/seriously, I love that kind of thing. You walk in to the mosquito-netted entry and are greeted(behind the little window) by the nicest staff on the planet. Knowledgable, fast and just plain sweet. So many sweet potato dishes. The food was incredible. I had a shrimp po boy– incredible. I also had the sweet potato cupcake: as my friend said«like carrot cake but milder». During the meal a person who I assume was the cook came out to make sure it was good. She looked genuinely pleased when we told her it was excellent. A man did the same, and they were not intrusive at all. I love this place. Would come here weekly if I lived here.

Sweet potato cupcakes! So good. The lemon shrimp with rice was very fulfilling, but not heavy. If you are looking for good healthy food, this is a must in San Antonio.

The people running the place here are so patient and sweet! I was visiting from California so my mind went into hibernation as I assumed my tourist state. The young lady at the counter explained the menu to me and gladly took my order. I enjoyed the food as a respite from all of the expensive and unhealthy food you stuff yourself with during a road trip. The salads were so refreshing, the crispy baked mac and cheese was deliciously salty and savory. Do order two salads and share. My sister and I only got one and we found ourselves fighting over it in the end. We also regret not being able to try more things. Their menu is fulllllllll of delicious options. A young man(very professional for his age) kindly checked on the quality of our meal as we sat in the comfy dining area. Another woman talked to us before we left, and helped us out before we walked down to the Alamo. Overall great experience, you leave this place feeling healthier not just from the food but from the ambiance.

Sweet yams was such a nice surprise! Driving here we weren’t sure what we were getting into, but it all worked out great. They have plenty of parking and very friendly service. We had the mac’n cheese, red beans and rice, and ginger shrimp. They even made my 6 year old a customized grilled cheese(not on the menu). They were quick with the order and had cold water and tea available while we waited. I have celiac and felt very comfortable eating here… everything on the menu, but two items, are gluten-free! Try the sweet potato cupcakes if you can, they’re worth every penny. Thanks Sweet Yams! We’ll be back when we’re driving through town again.

So amazing! Food was great, so fresh and well done! I have the Melody Mixer(vegetable mix) with a scoop of red beans. Plus, very helpful and friendly service and wonderful people. Highly recommend this for an afternoon stop!

The chicken is juiciest I have ever had. The shrimp is plump. Brown rice was cooked perfectly. Salad on the side is great not to much dressing just perfect. Macaroni was a bit crunchy and somewhat burnt. However I would go back and I would recommend.

Experience. We were having a hard time figuring out what we wanted for our last San Antonio meal. We heads so many good things about places all week and were disappointed most of the time. Then we stumbled onto sweet yams on Unilocal.Ok, we will give it a try. We pulled into the parking lot and were impressed by the compost booth, but a little intimidated by the space. It seemed very homey but like a club you need to be a part of to enjoy. I was so wrong. We were greeted with huge smiles and warm arms like we were part of the family. All our questions about menu items were answered clearly and in a friendly manner. The energy and vibe was great. Turns out the food was even better. The salmon was delicious, moist and well cooked. The Mac and cheese is incredible. Everyone sitting in there looked happy. While eating the place slowly cleared out and then we saw family members of the restaurant cleaning the tables. The whole thing felt awesome. Like being let into a family you immediately know you like. Who’s values you respect, being sustainable and about the environment, good food, and good people. Love this place. 6 stars.

This is a unique little spot. They make it clear through their signage that this was envisioned as primarily to-go, almost food truck style service. But they do have some seating and several groups were enjoying themselves when I went for lunch. If you want to stay to eat, know that it’s covered and uncovered outdoor seating — no AC or bathrooms. I got the veggie sandwich with the side salad and the mac n’ cheese. I wasn’t as blown away by the mac n’ cheese as other reviewers. I personally like a cheese sauce on my mac and this was just cheese. So it was rich and gooey when hot, but became oily and tough as it cooled(normal cheese behavior). Maybe I should have eaten it all while it was hot? But that veggie sandwich was awesome. Great bread, fresh veggies piled high, and the perfect amount of cheese and avocado to balance it all out. The side salad was fairly standard fair — greens and shredded veggies with a balsamic — but it was tasty and super fresh, too.

Delicious. Truly a hole in the wall. We had the ginger shrimp and blackened chicken and they were both really flavorful. I will say the chicken was a bigger portion. The sweet potato cupcake was magic. This is definitely an eat it and repeat it.

The food was delicious. We had Chili Love Shrimp, Sweet Potato Shrimp, and the Mac N Cheesy. They nailed the spicy flavor of the chili shrimp without being overpowering. The mac n cheesy is served like French fries — great for sharing but delicious enough to eat as a meal — although that’s probably why it’s best to share! Location: heading northbound on cherry street, it’s directly behind the funeral home. It’s pretty easy to miss but delicious so worth the u-turn!

Sweet Yams had 2 family members cooking directly for you! Fresh produce and health conscious tasty fare served in a post-hip space with jazz music and poster style alt-art signage/decoration. Served hot and tasty. Wife and me. We had the portobello mushroom burger with gluten-free bread and rice(savory) and field greens salad. Shannon and her Mom made in rushed and direct conversation while working. Loved the food and service and the non-slick, non-turn the tables fast ambience. Sweet Yams keeps it real!

While nondescript on the outside, this a must for anyone who likes quality food. As a vegetarian it is difficult to find options when I travel, but Sweet Yams does not lack for options. My partner got the shrimp and rice and he thoroughly enjoyed his dish, as did I the rice and beans; we both loved the texture and cheesiness of the mac & cheese. The person who took our order, who I believe is the owner’s daughter, was so kind and helpful. Although it took time for our food to arrive, it was worth the wait and the atmosphere was perfect for being causal and enjoying one another’s company. Also, I asked if they composted and they do, which is a major plus in my book! The two downsides, which are not big deals at all, but I love hot sauces and all they had was Siracha, which I am not a huge fan of, but the food had plenty of flavor but I also love adding more. Also, I did not expect plastic utensils, which are not environmentally friendly so I would have expected either compostable utensils or silverware. All in all an excellent underestimated spot in San Antonio!

Cute little place just east of downtown. We passed it by once before finding it — just look out for the graffiti sign between the church and the funeral home. I am impressed and delighted that they have vegan fare! I got the Lil’ Veggie Boy(the vegan po’ boy) and thought it would come in sandwich form, but it’s probably good that it didn’t — it could have gotten a little messy. It was sautéed veggies on a bed of rice and it came with a side of their house salad. Pretty tasty! If I’m back in the area, I’m definitely going to try their vegan chili!

Incredible find off the beaten path. It’s easy to miss due to its exterior and location. But trust me you don’t want to miss it. Everything is organic and sautéed. Which makes for a healthy flavorful meal. I ordered the blackened bbq chicken and a side of broccoli. The chicken was served over brown rice with a salad. It was a huge portion and the price was unbeatable. The food was fantastic. I’m not a local but if I were this would be my go to place. It’s not too far from the Riverwalk so don’t be discouraged to venture off to this gem.

I think my favorite part of being a Unilocal user is using the app to find gems like Sweet Yams. Don’t let the exterior scare you, go on in and experience the fabulous service and food. I had the blackened chicken with brown rice and salad. It was delicious and the portion was much bigger than expected for the low price! My friends had the salmon and the texas chili, and they both were raving about their meals as well. Make sure to check out this great organic food while in SA!

I can’t get enough of this lil place. Organic offerings with brown rice, salads, gluten free breads, vegetarian options and fantastic customer service = 5 stars. The very best dish is the sesame ginger shrimp. Served over brown rice and a salad– you too will develop a craving that only Sweet Yams can satiate. My recommendation– mix all of the above in their cute to go boxes, add the vinaigrette dressing that comes with it and proceed to allow your eyes to roll into the back of your head. Then slap yo momma. Today’s adventure involved stepping away from the sesame ginger shrimp and trying the portobello burger. It came on a gluten free bun with brown rice and a salad also. Inhaled. I love coming here because the people are so nice, you support a local business, it’s in the cut, and the food inspires you to want to eat healthier. Even though I will probably get a brisket mac and cheese sandwich tomorrow down the street(please see review for Dignowity Meats on Houston), Sweet Yams has my brown rice loving heart for good.

Came here on a whim with a friend since we happened to be in the area. It was a rainy day so the restaurant was very slow. We were the only customers. Neither of us is vegetarian but we wanted to try this place out b/c its good ratings. The ambiance is hipster-ish and a bit funky to my liking. Since we had dinner plans already, we just ordered the lemon garlic shrimp bowl with extra shrimps to share. It came with brown rice and a salad. The shrimps were very flavorful. The salad was pretty good too. Since I was on a no carbs diet, I didn’t eat the rice. But everything I ate tasted fresh and delicious. My friend thought they were decent too. Overall it’s a pretty legit vegetarian spot especially for a city like SA. There aren’t many vegetarian options in this town so Sweet Yams deff is a great healthy addition.

This little hole in the wall(middle of the street?) is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been to! The owner said it’s been in operation for about two years now. You really have to look carefully or else you’ll drive right pass this restaurant. Everything on their menu sounded delicious, but I decided on the sesame garlic shrimp because the pictures on Unilocal looked good. The lady who took my order was so down to earth and I just loved the tapestry that was behind her. As you walk deeper into the premise, you can feel the chill vibes emulating throughout the place. The wall décor was simply adorable and their outside seating area was so hip. I fell in love with this place instantly. The food didn’t take too long to arrive. It was very neatly presented. Shrimp on top of rice and salad on the side. The shrimp was very flavorful which in turn seasoned the brown rice. Personally, I thought the shrimp was a tad bit salty, but that’s because I’m very sensitive to salt. The salad was extremely refreshing and they even had this gluten free siracha sauce that was bomb!
