I have to agree with Tracie P. It is incredibly depressing to hear about the miniscule budgets provided to public schools. As a Bay Area native, I heard about projects getting funded rather frequently in Oakland. However now that we are in Virginia, no one seems to have heard of DonorsChoose, and it has been difficult to even get pencils and xerox paper to last the year at my boyfriend’s school(he is a special education teacher). Anyone who has visited the public schools in Richmond, Virginia would know that these kids are at a severe disadvantage. People like me take basic things like notebooks, pencils, and graph paper for granted and then wonder why so few from Richmond Public Schools graduate and/or start higher education. Times are tough, but if you are planning on donating somewhere please consider DonorsChoose!

Warning: It can be sad to read some of the proposals teachers are trying to get funded. But the cool thing about this service is that you get to research proposals in any of the geographic regions supported and fund what you wish. Some are pretty cool. My attitude, teachers need lots of support especially in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods.
