My go-to place for thai food is Bahn Thai, but since this place is really close to me I thought I’d give it a try. The décor to this place is really cute. There’s a lot of seating, and would be a great place to eat as a group. The place is very spacious and there was some good music playing. Since previous reviews mentioned that the portions were small, we ordered the green chicken curry, chicken fried rice, and pad thai. These portions were not small. I got full immediately. I asked for the pad thai to be medium spicy, so there was a lot of flavor and a nice heat to it. The chicken fried rice was a little oily, but it didn’t bother me so much. That was also really flavorful. The green chicken curry was flavorful and very filling. The pad thais from Bahn Thai and AppeThai are very different. I like the pad thai from Bahn Thai better, but this isn’t a bad place to get it either. Bahn Thai is remotely small and has terrible parking, but I don’t have to worry about that here. The service was great, too. They were very nice and even though there was a water station they still gave the water and refilled it for you. Overall, this is a great place to eat. They don’t hold back on flavor and the prices are great. I didn’t understand how there was no one else there besides us because it’s a great place to get some thai food.

I’ve been to AppeThai a few times now. Every time I go, the food is delicious and cheap, and I get wonderful service(they’re very polite and check on us periodically to make sure we have everything we need). I also love that they have a pay-first system because it makes it much easier for groups to have separate checks. 2 of my favorites are the pad thai and the satay chicken appetizer. They both come in pretty good portions, and the satay chicken appetizer is almost like a light meal on its own. The bathrooms are clean as well and the atmosphere is cute and inviting, with a hipster-esque vibe(chalkboard wall menu, smooth glossy picnic tables, Christmas lights). I love this place and will be coming back in the future!

My boyfriend and I were in the area but we didn’t want our usual ramen or curry so we decided to check this new thai place out. The restaurant is kind of small but very clean. Their menu is written on a wall with chalk and it was nicely printed. I chose their pad thai shrimp and my boyfriend got their yellow curry. The food was brought out in a timely manner and i was surprised with the portion i got especially at the price we paid. I’ve tried many Pad Thai dishes and several Thai restaurants and I have to say that this place didn’t really meet my expectations. The noodles they used were different. They were the thicker longer rice noodles and their sauce they used for the pad thai was very greasy and saucy. I didn’t finish my food and put it in a to-go box and so much sauce was left over on the plate it was kind of gross. They did have a lot of shrimp added in the pad thai which was pretty good and the amount of vegetables as well too. But after trying this place I would have to say its my least favorite thai spot and I don’t see myself coming back again.

Stumbled upon this place through Unilocal and decided on some take out after work. The menu written on the wall as you walk in, and gives the place a cute, casual vibe. I was craving noodles, so I decided to order tofu Pad Thai($ 7.50) and some fried chicken gyoza($ 3). The take out containers they give out are great! It’s those microwavable containers that are reusable, perfect for when I’m out of tupperware. There were 4 small gyozas and dipping sauce, which I was a little surprised since it cost $ 3. After my 25 minutes drive home, they were still crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Next time I’ll pass on these and try the corn fritters. As for my Pad Thai, it was packed so tightly in the container that it lasted me two meals! It came with the right amount of bean sprouts, peanuts, a lime, and crunchy wonton chips. The sauce consistency wasn’t too watery or too dry, and there was TONS of tofu! Every time I eat this dish at other restaurants they tend to skip on the tofu and I end up rationing it out, but they definitely don’t do that here. I just wish they had levels of spicy, as I did have to put sriracha as I ate. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and the friendly service from the employees and the owners. For affordable, casual Thai dining in Convoy, AppeThai is the way to go!

Their menu is on the wall to the left side right when you enter. I think its pretty clever and cute cause it nicely written in chalk. Something different. For starters we got their chicken wings($ 4) for 3. The wings where fried well. Super crispy and garlicy and juicy! It came with a side of sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. The wings takes long to cook than anything else. Chicken fried rice($ 7.50). The fried rice had a lot of flavor and was really good. The rice was not hard or drying. It was soft and most. Paw see ew with tofu($ 7.50). A really good dish. It was a bit greaser that I would like but super flavorful and garlicy. The way they cooked the tofu was perfect. Overall, this place is a great place to come to get your thai food craving fix! And when you check in here on Unilocal you get a free thai tea! Which is really good! One of the best thai tea I’ve had.

Went there with wife for lunch. I had the yellow curry with chicken and cream cheese wontons. My wife had the pad Thai with tofu. The location is fairly easy to get to and parking was available since it was away from the business of convoy. We went on a Sunday for lunch which explains why not many people were there, which is a shame since it looks like a nice place to hang out with a group and watch football. The sign was hard to see during the day since it is gray and in the corner of two buildings. The dining is open area, clean and modern. Great looking atmosphere for groups and popular music is playing. All that aside the food was only so so. The yellow curry was not as I was familiar with. It tasted more like a red curry disguised as yellow and the potatoes and veggies were cooked enough. The potatoes and veggies were cut too big so you need to cut in half but since they were under cooked that proved slightly difficult. Same for my wife’s pad Thai, the veggies were slightly undercooked. A surprise was the fried banana desserts. They have coconut in them. Was not expecting that. Not a fan of coconut, so we weren’t pleased. The cream cheese wontons were great. A little small and light on cream cheese but the other flavor came out nicely. I would recommend them. Overall a trending hip feel with potential for group meals. The food lacks leaving unimpressed. With all the choices available in that area, I don’t think I will be going back.

Their menu is written on the wall, so it gives the place a fast-food or café kind of feel. When we walked in, we were expecting to be seated and given menus. Instead, we realized we were supposed to step back, take in the menu, order at the counter and then find a seat.(Speaking of which, I HATE the metal chairs that they have there. The sound when you push them is awful!) Food wise, it was decent. We had chicken pad thai, beef pad see ew, and garlic chicken and rice. The servers/workers there were friendly. I asked for hot water and was relieved they didn’t give it to me in a plastic cup(my pet peeve). Instead, it came in a paper cup(like at Starbucks) with a sleeve. My pad see ew was a good portion size but the garlic chicken didn’t seem that big. Late that night, my husband was still hungry and that’s not usually typical for him. Based on the price and portion size, and the general fast-food feel of the place(which probably appeals to college students more), we probably wouldn’t go back. If you’re going to give the place that casual feel, make the prices match that. But 3 stars for good service and decent food.

Wow I stumbled upon this place on Unilocal and thought I should try it out. The parking lot was a bit cramped but it was doable. Very calming atmosphere when you walk in. You order and pay before seating yourselves. I had the pad see ew while my boyfriend had the pad Thai. Both dishes were amazing! We also got the corn fritters. Those were pretty good too. I’m probably going to try the chicken wings next time. The price was really good for Thai food. I think this will be our go to Thai place now. So glad I found this place. Oh and their Thai ice tea is very refreshing(:

I came here on a whim craving some thai food and not really wanting to cook. The service and quality of this place matches exactly that motive, and not so much the desire for fine dining. I arrived on a lazy Sunday, so the quality of the service was hard to gauge since only one other patron was inside and was already served. With that being said, the waitress/cashier was very kind when answering my questions and was accommodating when I asked half of my order for takeout. Right away I noticed that, at least for a Sunday, the music was a mix of acoustic covers and mellow top 50’s. This added to the overall relaxed ambiance ideal for groups or solo dining rather than larger groups. Even though the place initially seems like a sit down restaurant, the transaction felt more like take out. I had to pay right away and was made to tip before receiving my food. The counter also had a few cards with promo codes if you order take out, like a code through Unilocal’s services(moar24). I ordered the pad see ew w/seafood as my main course. This is an inherently greasy dish, but AppeThai’s version was served moderately dry but with moist, soft noodles. The fish(possibly cod) was firm enough to fit the texture of the rest of the seafood meaning the cook was able to add it at just the right time during the stir-fry process. The dish had a mix of harder to find chinese broccoli along with normal broccoli, something a bit difficult to find unless actively looking or asked for in San Diego. I also had a thai tea which was not too sweet, and closer to restaurant style than the sweeter versions at boba shops. Overall, AppetThai is a solid experience that’s still trying to get it’s clientele, but suffers slightly from its location away from Convoy’s main strip and easily missable strip mall. Sad for the restaurant owner, but can benefit the foodie that’s trying to get away from the crowds and/or wants to order out without waiting or fuss.

Once upon a time, there was a Taiwanese restaurant named Yes! Pingo in this location. And it didn’t suck, which basically made it the best Taiwanese restaurant in San Diego. Given, the number of pretty great Thai places in the area, its successor, AppeThai, doesn’t quite have the same advantage of being excellent by default. I ordered one of my Thai food stand-bys, the hot basil pork. I should really make use of irony quotes here because my «hot» basil had almost no flavor. If nothing else, I’ll admit that the décor here is pretty cute and the prices are good, but it may be one of those cases where one gets what one pays for. Summary: No Pingo.

A cute, hipster-y addition to the Convoy restaurant scene! When you step in, you’ll see a giant chalkboard menu to your left before you proceed to the front to order your food. Very cute concept, but it could be improved by adding descriptions to each food item listed. :-) Anyways, I digress. Onto the food: — My boyfriend got the panang curry with chicken. It tasted different than most panang curry I’ve had; the spices in it were more pronounced and had a bolder flavor. We agreed that it was a tad rich, but it was still enjoyable. — The chicken pad see ew was just the right flavor and the meat had the perfect tenderness! But, I made the mistake of adding generous spoonfuls of chili flakes after the first few bites. There was no option of choosing a spice level unlike most Thai restaurants, so the employee suggested that I add chili flakes to my liking. I was entirely at fault for almost burning my mouth off. Please don’t make the same mistake as I did by underestimating the power of the chili. — Thai tea was free with the Unilocal deal, and I really, really liked it! Creamy, rich, and just the right amount of sweetness. Generally speaking, AppeThai has a welcoming atmosphere with the most kind staff. I’ll be coming back soon to try more of their food items, especially the corn fritters. And I won’t be adding spoonfuls of chili flakes to my food next time. :)

Wow I love this place so much. I’ve been here twice, and had a great experience both times. What I’ve ordered: Pad Thai: The perfect combination of the Thai tastes. I like how the Pad Thai here really utilizes the fish sauce flavor and the entire dish is very very flavorful. I love it. Sometimes when you eat Pad Thais at other places, the noodles are too dry but they’ve been great here so far. Even taking it home and reheating it doesn’t make the noodles dry up from the lack of sauce! Pad See Ew: Tastes a bit bitter compared to the Pad Thai for sure. If you’re a Pad See Ew person, I think this is for you but I love my Pad Thai so moving on… Tom Yum: $ 4 for soup, I mean really. Very hearty with veggies and your choice of meat! Pla(salad with lettuce, red onions, your choice of meat in a fish sauce dressing) really really yummy. Slightly spicy and filling because of the meat. My friend and I had to stop ourselves from drinking the leftover fish sauce dressing lol. Hot Basil: This is one of my favorite kinds of Thai dishes, and this did not disappoint. We got this with tofu, which is the fried tofu cubes. Came with two mounds of steaming rice. Sauce was great, veggies cooked to perfection-slightly crunchy and fresh, and tofu was just tofu LOL what did you expect. Tips: Unilocal check-in gives you a free Thai Tea There are a myriad of spices and sauces inside the wooden containers by the water dispenser, like fish sauce and chili sauce. If you like a kick or need a little more flavor, I highly recommend these! Also, they look pretty if you take photos of your food, lol. GOGOGO you won’t regret it! Also a huge plus, the servers are soooooo nice and the prices are super affordable!

Prelims: located over the desiccated remains of what used to be Yes! Pingo, this restaurant seems to wanted nothing to do with the former tenants of the space and have transformed it into a seemingly hipster Thai restaurant. The menu is located on the giant chalkboard wall to your left when you enter, and there was plenty of spacious seating around when I came during lunch hour. You look at the menu, think that you should probably order something more exotic than the Pad Thai or Pad See Eew that you normally order, and then lose courage and order the same thing you get every time at a Thai restaurant. Parking is plentiful for the most part, and service is pretty good. Also, free check-in Thai tea that’s pretty bomb — see below. I ordered the pork Pad Cha because the Pad Thai or Pad See Eew will not be that much more amazing and I figure if the restaurant has any chops, it’ll be a good way to test what other choices it has. My co-worker ordered the chicken spicy noodles, which were very similar to drunken noodles(it should be — he explicitly asked which one was like drunken noodles). The Pad Cha was pretty flavorful — it wasn’t overcooked, the pork wasn’t super dry, and there wasn’t an overabundance of the grease that usually permeates throughout these dishes. My entrée came with white rice(you can ask for fried rice, substitution is no charge) and soup and salad. The soup was clean and simple, and the salad was pretty fresh with a very thick peanut sauce. All in all, very simple and clean lunch and I’m definitely a fan. My co-worker’s spicy noodles were pretty decent, but as I noted earlier, if you just get the same thing over and over again, your expectation levels make the differences between good and pretty good somewhat minor. So he liked it, but he likes drunken noodles, so if you’re into it, then go for it. The Thai tea was pretty bomb — sweet, creamy, and with that delicious thai tea flavor that one always craves, it hit the spot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s the reason that the reviews go from 3 to 4 stars. The prices vary depending on what you order(seafood is more expensive than beef is more expensive than chicken, etc.) — my Pad Cha ended up costing me around $ 8. Service was good — the food came quick and the server was helpful. All in all, a rather pleasant lunch. TL;DR Decent Thai, bomb Thai tea.

We found Appe b/c Chaba was closed on Sundays. I really like the fast-causal concept and minimalist-trendy décor! The menu is written on the wall with chalk and you order at the counter. The prices are great, I think it was $ 7.50 for a dish with chicken or veggies. They have many small apps for $ 3 too. Overall, our food was a little hit and miss, but I think they are just still working out the kinks b/c they are new. Our cream cheese wontons were not quite hot, more like warm. They just needed to keep them in the fryer another minute. My spicy/drunken noodles weren’t great. Some places make an interesting sauce for spicy noodles, but they were more hot and oily here. However, my husband’s pad se ew was the best we’ve ever tried. It was so full of flavor with really good perfectly crisp broccoli. Even though I didn’t love my dish, I would come back for the pad se ew. Drink selection wasn’t too exciting, but that’s not a deal breaker. I will be back for the pad se ew!

AppeThai has done a nice little refresh after Yes! Pingo, but I’m not sure it’s going to be enough to compete with so many other great Thai establishments in the area. My date and I tried ordering the corn fritters, but sadly around 5:00 pm they were all out, so I proceeded to order the garlic pepper with pork with fried rice. The dish came out on paper plates, but the presentation was lovely. Overall, the garlic pepper with pork was on the bland side. Was it supposed to be spicy? I have no idea, but it wasn’t really garlicky or peppery. Thank goodness that they have trays of various chili sauces and oils for you to use. The fried rice was bland as well with small flecks of egg sprinkled throughout. Although I was not impressed by my dish, I felt like the prices were relatively inexpensive for a lunch or dinner option.

So many places to eat around kearny and Unilocal pointed me here. So we tried it because my wife is a thai food lover. The name Appethai wasnt appealing at all but we decided to give it a shot. Walking in youre lost. Do I take a seat? Do I order up front? Do I get seated? Well you order up front, just like a mcdonalds. I think the menu is set up pretty cool, it takes an entire wall up. Or you can get a take home menu. Not much of décor. Just a wall full of plates. And tables set up like a schools cafeteria. Not the coolest experience for dining out. Dining out is always cool though. Prices are not bad at all. We ordered the pad see ew with chicken. The pad see ew was pretty good though. Good taste but not enough chicken. We also ordered the pad thai with shrimp. We were a little disappointed. It came mixed with tofu. We asked for shrimp and got 4 shrimp and a bunch of tofu… Seriously I expected a generous portion of shrimp. Even if you have to up the price, just dont put in tofu. The cream cheese wontons were tiny. I don’t even know if they season their cream cheese or if its plain cream cheese. I couldnt tell because there was so little. We also got the chicken wings. And yep we got chicken wings, plane olé chicken wings. 3 of them I may add. They were crispy and cooked well. The chicken Satay was pretty good though. I understand its a new restaurant and all but, you really don’t have to try and fill up the plate with anything that shouldn’t go with chicken satay. With that being said, dont give me toast with my chicken satay. I mean it just doesn’t go. This was $ 4, I recommend upping the price and give more chicken and less toast. The staff were nice. It was awesome to get a free Thai iced tea. I have to add, its a powder mix so its sweeter. Everything tastes great free though. They do sell pretty good beer here I may add. Im sure this restaurant will be making many changes in time. Good luck.

***FREETHAITEAWITH UnilocalCHECKIN*** The food is actually pretty decent here! Prices are reasonable… I mean really thai food kinda tastes the same everywhere when you think about it. I think the fact that they are located where they are is what hurts them though. I probably wouldn’t have known to stop by if I was just driving by since its tucked in a business plaza that isn’t terribly saturated with other restaurants. Can’t go wrong with Pad See Ew, Drunken Noodle, or Panang Curry Great place to check out if you are all about supporting new businesses !

Thought we would stop by and try this new Thai place! We came around 9:30PM near closing so there wasn’t a wait at all. The interior looked really nice and spacious with cute decorations. This Thai place is not like any other Thai restaurants; we had to order first before we got our food and self seated ourselves. We got the pad see ew and spicy beef salad because they didn’t have beef larb(only chicken larb). Both dishes were pretty good but it wasn’t as spicy as I wanted it to be. The salad was a bit sour but that’s okay. We also got the free Thai tea and that was delicious! Overall, it was a good experiences

New Thai spot that opened late September 2015. Vibe: casual, semi hip, mellow modern music, bright natural light, large eating space, bar to eat Order at the counter. Menu on blackboard wall on left. Order at counter, sign on iPad if using card where you can leave a tip prior, food is brought out to you. Price: $-$$ Pros: quick, friendly staff, good tasting food, nice décor Great green curry, tasty. Recommend the tom yum soup. The pad see iw was a little too oily and lettuce underneath kind of old and wilty(not big deal cuz it was more of a decoration, but ya know). It came out in about 5 – 6 minutes. Not sure if should been happy or weirded out. Thai tea — yum. Recommendations for the restaurant: add more decorations or TVs in the blank wall spaces, louder music, bigger TVs, maybe actual dishware vs paper plates and plastic utensils? Would be great working here, won’t have to do dishes! Overall: great Thai food at a great price. Nothing particularly bad to say, nothing particularly beyond wildest dreams amazing to say. So many great Thai places out there in SD though that has a uniqueness to them, this one is their causal cafeteria vibe. Would stop by again if in area, but wouldn’t specifically crave for this place again. Woo hoo.

I stopped in this new Thai eatery after work for some dinner. I ordered some fried chicken wings for $ 4, the crispy rolls made with ground chicken at $ 3, and the spicy flat noodles with chicken for $ 7.50. Apparently, there are only tow levels of heat at this place: non spicy and then just plain spicy. The spicy noodles arrived first, oddly enough, and other than the serving being a little on the small side, it was quite good. The noodles had that great lightly chewing texture and great flavor, and most important a great spiciness that allowed the flavors of the food to come through. There was a good amount of chicken and it was tender and tasty. The vegetables were all crisp and well seasoned. The crispy rolls were very good. They had a nice light fry and crispiness, and the ground chicken inside was light but well seasoned and quite tasty. The veggies that came in the roll too were very good. They served the rolls with a sweet and sour sauce, but it would of been nice to get a house hot sauce or hot mustard with them too. Although I liked the fried chicken wings, I was very surprised there was only three pieces for the serving. They were fried very well and their meat was tender and juicy. They came with a very light seasoning: a seasoning I thought they should be more aggressive with. You order at the counter, pay, and then your food is brought out to you. Service was very friendly and attentive.
