Arañitas Yarn By Sofia

This is a little gem of a store! I love Sofia, she is so happy, kind and helpful. I started to crochet a year ago and will only buy my yarn here. She has a great selection and is always happy to offer her advice. When I start more complex projects (and have the time free) I will definitely join her for classes too!

I visited this shop during the San Diego Yarn Crawl. I was very impressed with her inventory. The prices are very reasonable, and Sofia is wonderful person.
I love the fact that she carries as many crochet supplies as knitting. Most shops this size focus on knit rather than both.
Parking is a challenge. I had to park a couple blocks away, so be prepared to walk

TINY yarn shop, so not a lot of variety. But if you’re not far from the area, it’s definitely worth stopping in.

I am so in love with Aranitas Yarn By Sofia! I stumbled upon this place months ago when looking for a little yarn shop that had better quality than the typical stuff at Michaels. It is a very tiny room but a knitter/​crocheters paradise. Sofia has such a variety. I had wanted to brush up on my knitting skills, and asked her some questions. Sofia answered all of them very thoroughly, and mentioned she had 6 sessions for $ 60 (plus yarn and needle purchase, which is totally understandable). I jumped on the opportunity and am SO glad I did. Most places are at least $ 30 a class, and it is very one on one, just a table in her little shop. Sofia is very sweet, kind, and skilled in the art of knitting. I not only expanded on my abilities to knit, but have gained a nice friend. She always remembers me when I come in, and asks about whatever we had discussed last time (family, friends, work, the good gossip). She treats everyone amazingly, and is truly a grandmother figure to anyone who walks through her doors. Best yarn place in town with the nicest owner on this planet! I recommend her classes to everyone, beginner to experienced! She is amazing at teaching pattern reading (something I greatly struggle with) She will always have something to teach!

I just had my first class yesterday. And Sofia was so patient with me, she really put me at ease. I’m not coordinated at all and she really took the time to help me feel comfortable. I have 5 more classes and can’t wait.

I am so happy that I started taking classes form Sophia. She is so patient and a great teacher! I have worked on projects together with her and some alone and I feel like she is invested in every one.

I am a beginner knitter and just finished six one hour classes with Sophia. I tried learning from books and You Tube but without hands on lessons, I wasn’t very successful. Sophia is a wonderful teacher because she’s been knitting since she was a young girl. She is pleasant, kind and very patient. Her shop is adorable as well. I have to say I learned more about knitting from just six classes than I ever would have learned on my own. I plan to take more classes there and I woulds recommend her classes to everyone.

Sofia is very very sweet and patient. She opened 15 later than closing time just for me and to teach me the basics. I signed up for six classes and I am so happy to start creating! I really recommend Sofia to those that have always wanted to learn, she is extremely sweet.

My daughter and I took 6 crochet classes. Sofia was amazing! She was so patient and a total sweetheart. Very knowledgeable. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to knit or crochet. She has so many beautiful pieces for sale that she made. She does custom work and is so quick!

I just found out about this shop and I LOVED IT!!! I will be back many times. The owner was super nice, the shop was CLEAN and WELL ORGANIZED. I’m sad it has taken me this long to find this gem.

If you want to learn to knit or crochet, this is the shop for you. The classes are very affordable, the owner is wonderful. The yarn is absolutely gorgeous. Remember it’s a one-​person run store (for the most part) so you might want to call before you go to be sure she’ll be there and you won’t have the disappointment the other reviewer had. It’s worth learning to knit or crochet with good quality materials, good quality yarn and an excellent instructor.

Sofia is one of the most sweetest, cheerful and knowledgeable people I have met. She has a beautiful shop, that is well stocked and organized. She makes everyone feel invited when they walk in. I brought my grandmother to take crochet classes from her and from the first lesson, she made us feel like part of her family. She not only is patient and caring, she has an efficient way of teaching. My grandmother is almost finished with her infinity scarf after only three classes! I recommend Sofia to anyone interested in knitting and crocheting!

About 2 months ago, I decided that I wanted to learn how to knit! So I google what materials I needed and proceeded to Michael’s to buy some yarn and needles. I wanted to teach myself thru youtube, but failed miserably. I was so frustrated with the needles and yarn, that I decided I probably needed lessons.
I look up knitting places on Unilocal and find two places close to my neighborhood. I find Aranitas Yarn by Sofia, and I find The Grove on 30^th. Since I love South Park, I headed to the Grove. I found out that their classes are about $ 35 per class, without materials. Also, I felt a little bit «snubbed». The person who was watching the store made me feel like I was a nuisance to her day.
So I decided to try out Aranitas. I call the number listed on Unilocal and speak to a kind lady named Sofia. She tells me lessons are $ 10 per hour and by appointment.
I am on my 4^th lesson now, and have learned so much from her that I would not have learned trying to teach myself on youtube.
Her selection of needles and yarn is vast, and priced very well, a bit cheaper compared to other yarn stores in San Diego.
You will love the yarn selection, but this store’s secret is really Sofia. She is so helpful, and so sweet. Always willing to help and ready to give advice.
My suggestion, go see for yourself. You can check out the other yarn stores, and take lessons if you like, then go take a lesson with Sofia. You’ll see the difference.

Right by my work so stopped here for supplies when a friend was bedridden by a difficult pregnancy. Stopped by again this week and Sophia remembered me! Great little store with tons of options for fine quality yarn with wide price range. Sophia carries silk, bamboo, alpaca, Italian, merino, you name it! She is also quite talented, as you can see by the items she made that are for sale. She offers classes and I happen to stop in while she was teaching a student. I am amazed by her patience! She is extremely helpful, which is really important to me since I am a novice still. What I also like is her selection of books and literature about knitting/​crocheting, which is very helpful in deciding your projects. I am starting a «crocheting» club with some students and Sophia was kind enough to help with ideas, patterns, resources. Will be coming here as a regular instead of Michaels. If I am going to spend a lot of time making things, I want better quality for my project since my efforts are worth it! Cash and checks, but credit cards coming soon.

This store is super friendly and Sofia sells yarn, needles, accessories, and patterns here. She also offers knitting classes and a large array of her masterwork! there are wraps, scarves hats, you name it — for babies and grown women as well. She has so much experience and it only costs $ 5/​hour for lessons! Can’t beat that! There is a minimum of 6 classes ($ 30 for 6 hours) IT’s still one of the best deals I’ve ever found!!! Even Beverly’s charges $ 10/​class and you won’t be the only student there.

Of all the reviews I have left on Unilocal,this is the one I am most excited about! I cannot recommend Sofia and her shop enough. I recently picked up the art of crochet and made the mistake of starting at one of the big craft store chains. No one could answer my questions so I bought a beginner’s kit and some yarn. Turned out the kit was useless and the yarn was designed for experienced crocheters.
On a walk to one of our favorite parks I noticed a sign for crochet/​knitting supplies. I LOVED the idea of supporting a mom & pop shop instead of an impersonal chain and I was not disappointed! Sofia and her store are amazing! Not only are the supplies much higher quality but she offered me so many helpful tips. She offers lessons for only $ 5, but told me to call/​stop in any time I had a question. I’ve been back twice already and tried different yarns. The experience gets better and better!
Never will I step foot in another store for my supplies! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I would love to tell you what a wonderful little Indie shop this is and how much I loved it and how I walked out with a bag full of yarn. Alas, even though the sign said they were open 9 – 5 today, when I got here about 2:45pm they were closed so I wasn’t able to come in and look around. I live in La Mesa and gas is costly so it may be awhile before I get back to this neighborhood, if ever. I’m very disappointed. :’{

I just stopped by — or tried to — with some friends:
It was closed, in spite of an ad saying they’d be open today.
It was a TINY space, about 10ft x 10ft — just one bedroom in an old run-​down house that was converted into business space.
From what I could tell through the windows, it was mostly if not entirely novelty yarns (a lot of the «higher end» novelty stuff, mostly from Berroco).
