Had Bargarden bookmarked for a review since my visit, but unfortunately didn’t get to post it before I read that the business closed. The Euro moniker(Bargarten though it eventually morphed into Bargarden) originally caught my eye, as well as the location. The space was impressive and fit in with the East Village scene. I came during lunch and customer flow seemed slow, but imagined it to be a popular place in the evenings. Multiple bars, wooden benches and community tables, wall art, wraparound patio with bar games like corn hole – everything about the space made for a cool happy hour/late night hangout for young crowds. While the taps looked good in terms of craft beer, the menu was limited to their gourmet sausages. I ordered the Duck Fig & Brandy sausage with kraut and citrus fennel as the complimentary toppings. The small order of Duck Fat Fries came with one dipping sauce. The creative presentation on the duck pork and bun looked great, but I wasn’t blown away. The variety of mustards helped. The fries… I tried to like them but I just couldn’t eat them. The Curry Ketchup dipping sauce didn’t quite bring me on board either. A 4.5 star atmosphere and 2.5 star food made for a 3.5 experience. Despite what went wrong and ultimately brought the shutters, maybe with a revamped formula, the team who first opened this place up can work through issues for another project. Best of luck to them.

Visited this place from out of town pretty much by mistake. I was looking for a different restaurant and wandered in to ask where it was, but ended up staying because the girl I was asking was so funny. If I remember right her name was Mia. Either way the food was amazing and the service was perfect. Will return and recommend!

I like this place a lot. It’s a place for beer and brats and they do it right. I tried the bockwurst with the duck fat fries and I can highly recommend both. Very laid back place with great staff.

Great selection of wursts and beer! Ate the pheasant wurst with fries cooked in duck fat. The service was fantastic & will definitely be coming back to try the other variety of wursts that they have.

As a non-meateater, I expected to be drinking only during my visit to Bargarten. There were, however, not one but two vegetarian sausage options on their menu. I had recently eaten lunch but still managed to stuff a Vegan Chorizo into my face and I am glad I did. Next time I will try the Vegan Smoked Apple Sage. Beer selection is solid, with some predictable macro-brews as well as some pleasant surprises from Alpine and URBN on tap. Tried a couple of drinks off of the cocktail menu and those were solid as well. Great experience all around.

This place is fantastic. Gourmet sausages never tasted so good. You can tell the mastermind behind this menu truly takes pride in conjuring up a mix of flavors that will leave you speechless in satisfied delight. I tried this place about a fortnight ago and I’ve been back four times since. I don’t even eat hot dogs or sausages too often, but this place has me and my gf completely hooked. Delicious beers on tap as well. Not to mention the mind bending array of dipping sauces for your fries and hot dogs. Get there as soon as possible. :).

Already such a great vibe and from the new palettes on the wall it seems like they are only getting started. Ordered the fennel and citrus topping… OMG… totally didn’t expect that yummy combo as a topping. Can’t wait to go back when they are in full swing!

Sausage sausage sausage! So thrilled that downtown got another sausage spot other then s&m which is a little too hipster for me and my friends. This new fresh spot doubles as a lunch joint but also a full bar to throw back a few brews. Inviting staff. Our server mea shockingly convinced me(a loyal carnivor) that I might be vegan? I had the vegan chorizo dog with fresh sauerkrat. Talk about selling ice to an eskimo. We’ll be coming back for not only the sausage but the entertaining service and open sunny patio.

If you like creative sausages and craft beers, well this place is worth to be checked out! I stopped in for lunch at the onset of opening, and ordered a Blue Paddle Pilsner, the Brockwurst, and Bratwurst with cheddar fondue. The brockwurst was made from veal with a touch of lemon zest and chives. The sausage was mild in flavor and tender. The topping I choose contrasted that mild flavor of the sausage. The hausmade kraut, pickles and pepperoncini had a vibrant aggressive flavor which was topped off with some high grain mustard. These toppings went well with the milder sausage and the ice cold pilsner. The bratwurst with the peppers, pickled hot peppers, red onions and cheddar fondue was very good. The brat sausage was made from smokey pork and also had a bit of of spice. This sausage was much juicier than the veal and sported a lot more flavor too. The peppers and onions were very well prepared and quite tasty. The cheddar fondue sauce was a little broken, but had great flavor and went very well with the brat. I really liked both sausages, but I did feel the roll on both need to be moister. The heat it over a grill, which leaves some nice grill marks, bit the bread on both was a little dry and tended to fall a part a little. It tasted good, but just did not have a best texture. A softer bread that wraps around the sausage better would be good. The girls who took my order were very cool and chatty. You order at a counter, find a seat, and they bring your items to you. Nice place.

Wow! Great food and an excellent beer selection. I had the veg chorizo and my friend had the jalapeño cheddar with a bunch of sauces and they were both awesome. Get the fries, a bunch of sauces and don’t miss out on the fondue. Some of the best fries in town.

I’m so happy that more gastropubs are opening in the Gaslamp! We need more craft beer and great food in the heart of SD! First off, this place is brand spankin’ new. I’m pretty sure the dust hasn’t even settled from all the freshly carved wooden tables(I have evidence of this on the black jeans I wore, actually). It opened the week of Comic Con and we fortunately stumbled upon it as we were looking for a quick bite that would fuel us up for the rest of the day’s festivities. We were drawn in by the tiny minimalist menu taped onto the window. Sausage — yes! Duck fat fries — woo! BEER — yas! The ambiance was super minimalist, casual, and laid back. It had a nice open floor plan, an upper and lower level of seating, communal tables — all carved from wood, 2 bars(one upper and one lower), a flat screen TV, and self-serve water. It may look a little empty but it has that simple, bare bones type of look. Plus there’s an awesome Bruce Lee w/sausages mural on one of the upper walls! The food: we tried the smoked ham & swiss(smoked pork sausage) and linguica(Portuguese hickory smoked pork). You can add one set of toppings for free and we went with the caramelized onions/peppers and sauerkraut/pickles/pepperoncini mixes, respectively. Toppings came piled high and the sausage was definitely quality. I’m not a sausage expert, but they were so above any sausage I’ve ever tasted. The two sausages were distinct in flavor but they didn’t exactly match what I had imagined based on their descriptions, but they were still quite delicious. My smoked ham + swiss tasted fresh but the smokiness wasn’t what I had thought it would be. The duck fat fries were by far my favorite thing and the house made dipping sauces were outstanding. We tried the scallion aioli and the tzatziki sauce — both were so tasty and flavorful, I totally recommend either one. The fries were perfectly crisp, not greasy or soggy whatsoever. Brb dreaming of them now. They didn’t have too many beers on tap when I looked at the list; a mix of local brews and domestic beers, which could change in the future. They also have a full bar for the non-beer drinkers. 4.5 stars for beer selection but rounding up to 5 stars for the awesome service and food. TL;DR awesome sausages, duck fat fries/dipping sauces, ambiance, and service!

Sooo Tasty! Just opened too. Be sure to try their French Fries. They have a great atmosphere and nice selection of gourmet bratwursts. I tried the veal and pork which was so good I barely used any sauce(but I do recommend the currywurst ketchup). Their toppings aren’t overpowering and complement the main dish. Perfect resting stop from Comic Con. Highly recommend.
