Big Kahuna’s Ice Cream

Had the chocolate peanut butter. It was so so. Tasted like it was freezer burned. Sitting and eating our ice cream priceless.

On our quest to find shaved ice in San Diego, we stumbled upon this cute shack right off the beach. The kids got shaved ice in multiple flavors and colors and I decided to get the frozen iced coffee that tasted more like a crazy sweet milkshake– luckily I decided to share with the wifey.

Great little ice cream shop right on the beach in PB. There is nothing better than grabbing a delicious ice cream and taking a stroll along the beach with it :) Blessed to be in San Diego.
Anyhow, the ice cream is all homeade, which I didn’t expect from a little ice cream stand, and it was creamy and delicious. I tried the butterscotch marble, chocolate peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookie dough. All good, but the butterscotch marble is definitely my favorite!

WOW I have had many snow cones but nothing compares to the shaved ice at big kahunas. My daughter and I shared a large shaved ice, I did not think I would eat a lot but when I took a bite I could not stop. We both really enjoyed it. If you want a really good shaved ice big kahunas is definitely the place to go.

Small shop with big flavor!!! My favorite ice cream is red mint chip. pro tip: get a scoop of ice cream in the shave ice for that ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ bar affect. ($ 1 extra)

It’s is a cute and colorful shack, right by the beach. I was just walking by with my friend after a yummy brunch and we wanted dessert. It’s in the beach «bazaar» area.
it’s $ 4 for a large shaved ice and you get to choose up to 3 flavors. $ 1 to add ice cream and he puts it at the bottom. Vanilla is usually a safe bet! The ice cream was creamy and tasted hand-​made, not that basic Dreyer’s ice cream.
the shaved ice tasted like every shave ice, BUT it wasn’t as well-​shaven like the Hawaiian style it claims to be. There were still ice chunks and I like my shaved ice nice and thin so it can melt nicely in my mouth. my favorite is still Ice Blast on Convoy St. Much better for your buck!

Big Kahuna’s has some seriously delicious ice cream! 100x better than cold stone or BR. You also can’t go wrong with their Acai bowl! Love this place. Great place to go and people watch while eating your food in the chairs out front

Great ice cream and service! My favorites are the pistachio and the cappuccino crunch. The service is wonderful, for example… my little one chose Strawberry but then said, «but where are the sprinkles?» as I was about to explain that there weren’t any sprinkles the lady very subtly (without my child noticing) whispered to me that they had sprinkles. Needless to say, my child was thrilled! Definitely coming back.

Hawaiian shaved Ice for $ 3. Located on the beautiful Beach near La Jolla, it has a perfect location for walkers or longboarders along the beach. There is only one worker there at a time so the line isn’t too quick. They have some good handmade ice cream, which you can add to your shaved ice for only $ 1.

My boyfriend and I went biking on Pacific Beach and after an hour of riding along the coast, needless to say, we were parched. We passed by a few ice cream stands along the way and decided upon the colorful shack in the middle of the strip. I’ve always wanted to try Hawaiian shaved ice and when I saw that you could choose up to 3 flavors, I was sold.
First off, Hawaiian shaved ice may sound similar to the regular shaved ice. It’s not your average snow cone. Hawaiian shaved ice uses a method which turns the ice into literal soft, pillowy snow shavings and is pumped with a generous amount of fruit juices. The fine texture of the ice allows for the juice to be absorbed, thus giving it that intense flavor, sort of like slush. I chose the mango, peach and pink lemonade for mine.
It melts quite quickly but when the hot sun is beating down on you on the shore, it’s easy to gorge oneself. My boyfriend took a safe route and got ice cream but was more than happy to help me finish mine. There were plenty of other flavors to choose from for both ice cream and Hawaiian shaved ice, which I’m anxious to try the next time we decide to go biking here again.

Tasty ice cream right on the beach. You can definitely tell the difference with the homemade ice cream and they have a good variety of options.

Shaved ice was good. Ice was not as soft I generally like. Flavors are plentiful.

Home made ice cream never tasted so good. Look for the bright colored shack along the beach. The ladies were worked there were very friendly and patient.
I tried the chocolate peanut butter. For someone who usually does not like chocolate ice cream, it was pretty subtle. I went back again for the butterscotch marble. That is like pralines and cream with carmel. Yummy!
My family had: reed mint chip, macadamia nut and coffee, and brownies woth cream. Each were creamy but not super sugary. Don’t forget to ask between a waffle or cake cone!

oh goodness– the small shaved ice is HUGE. I was looking to buy a treat for my sister, but one look and I was thinking that is WAY too much! However, you can always ask to split it in half, which is much more reasonable.
I got the lemon shaved ice, which was pretty good. But, it reached a point eventually where I got sort of tired since it started becoming way too syrupy, if that makes sense.
Would I come back? I would want to since I still want to try the ice cream at this stand.

During our after dinner stroll along the beach boardwalk, I wanted to grab some ice cream for dessert even though it was slightly cool out already.
We ordered the small Hawaiian style shaved ice (coconut flavor) with butterscotch ice cream underneath ($ 4.00). Coconut ice was good but ice cream scoop was skimpy.
Man in the shack was surly and huddled in the dark. Come on, dude — your job is to serve ice cream at the beach — how bad can it be? No sympathies from me.
Grabbed a seat infront of the shack and people watched to our hearts content.

Every time that I vacation in San Diego, I make it a point to stop in and grab some yummy ice cream! I have no idea why this place would get any negative reviews, this place is great! My family loves it! This place is right on the beach and they have friendly fast service. Their pistachio and chocolate peanut butter are amazing!
