While walking on the boardwalk at Mission Beach(which is not a boardwalk by the way… just a long sidewalk by the beach) I saw a sign that said«Best Fish Tacos»… so of course I had to try one. Best? I don’t know. But, it was fresh and flavorful and served with a smile. The portion of fish was generous enough and the seasoning(including fresh cilantro) was yummy. A nice quick and tasty beach lunch.

Don’t make a mistake like i did and stay away from this place. I should’ve checked Unilocal beforehand, but how can you screw up a burrito or chicken carneasada fries?! Apparently its possible. This joint is a tiny run down weathered looking shack with only one person working inside. Conveniently located right off the boardwalk in PB . My shrimp burrito was lukewarm, with total of 3 shrimp, with cold lumps of shredded cheese, and who puts raw onions in the burrito? Anyways, total disaster of a burrito that went into the trash that was 9 bucks. Same fortune was for chicken carne fries. Local that fell for a tourist trap… never again.

The Guacamole was a quarter of the size the picture and tasted only of tomato. Very disappointing after waiting a while for it.

Very good, albeit overpriced, carne asado tacos. The burritos aren’t that great. Very convenient being next to the beach.

This place has the best carne asada quesadillas around. Everything else is pretty good too. No one eats more Mexican food than me. These people are all crazy.

The worst Mexican food I’ve ever had! Had the fish burrito, fish tasted dead. The fish burrito also had which tasted frozen beans. Tried a carne asada taco awful super salty did not taste like steak. The quesadilla with chicken was okay. Do not go here ever!

I hate giving 1 and 2 star reviews but this place was very disappointing. We came here Fourth of July weekend by chance. We were sitting on the beach and happened to walk by looking for food. I love burritos and decided to give it a shot. There was a very small wait(maybe 5 – 10 minutes). The burritos start at $ 6.99 for carne asada or chicken asada and go up from there. The tacos start at $ 5.99 for chicken and go up from there(you get 2). I ordered the chicken asada burrito and my friend ordered the carne asada. My burrito was super bland and they only had one hot sauce to attempt to flavor it up. Too bad it didn’t work. I only ate about half of my burrito because it was so incredibly flavorless. According to the sign they have the best fish tacos in San Diego. Maybe I should have ordered those because this was the worst burrito I have ever tried! The only reason this taco stand got 2 stars instead of 1 is because the service was at least quick and efficient. Also it is right along the boardwalk so you can grab and go. Don’t waste your time coming here. There are a ton of great taco/burrito shops in San Diego that have delicious food. Or at least don’t get the chicken asada burrito.

Disappointed to say the least. I was expecting the TJ taco and got a corn tortilla with unflavored meat

You know what it is a good taco & a good Quesadilla. Now I love me a good street taco and this missed the mark. The name is misleading and it doesn’t taste like the TJ tacos found on Highland Ave in National City or in Tijuana. But the carne asada with green tomatillo was tasty. I was expecting guac but then again I didn’t ask. Still a good flavor all its own. The Quesadilla was generous and cheesy. It is a shack on the beach. Fast and authentic hole in the wall. I’m satisfied.

The fish tacos are to die for!!! Best by far, hands down! I go here on a weekly basis to get some fish tacos. Its right on the beach, so you get quite the view, and excellent food to go with it!

I’ve been a couple of times. The cook/owner had great customer service. Very low key food. The tacos were awesome. A couple tables outside to sit on. Drinks are cheap. Definitely hit the spot.

I’ve live in sd for 10 years, so I’ve had my fair share of carne asada fries. These were by far the worst. Looked and tasted like dog food.

We wanted to grab a quick snack during our intermission from playing in the sand. Found this little spot that boasted«best fish tacos in SD». For some reason I thought this place was affiliated with the Tacos El Gordos in Las Vegas which some may argue as the best tacos in LV. What a dumb mistake! Over priced for a little shack and not at all impressed. We had the carne asada fries and a fish taco. It was edible but within 15 minutes of our meal we both had major stomach aches. I so regret choosing this place! Don’t be tempted for quick and easy or you will be sick and queasy.

Typical drunken mistake that I wish I could take back, but I can’t I have to deal with it and move on. After visiting a couple different bars out group of friends decided that we were starving and wanted something to eat. We walked down the little strip and saw Tacos El Gordo, we wanted something quick so we could meet up our other friends at open bar. We figured it had to be good since there was a cardboard sign they had clearly painted themselves that said, and I quote«best fish tacos in San Diego!» I mean come on would they lie? Yes, yes they lied! I didn’t get the fish tacos, but my friend did and he wasn’t too impressed. I ordered the taco bowl and nachos to share. First off the bowl was disgusting. It literally had a layer of could cheese on top. The meat was questionable and it all lacked any taste. I had to load up on hot sauce so I could finish it. The nachos were a sorry attempt. The food took so long to come out that we were all so excited to try it because we thought there was so much work going into it. I have no idea why it took so long when half the stuff was served cold anyways. It took me 25 minutes to get my food when I was the second person in line to order food. There was no one there when my group arrived. I know that my review probably won’t make much of a difference because most of the people going to Taco El Gordo will make the same epic mistake I did. They’ll be too drunk to check Unilocal, but the next morning when they do check Unilocal they will relate to me 100%

I’ve been deceived. Like everyone else on here, why, WHYDIDN’T I READTHEREVIEWSFIRST?! Well I learned my lesson and wasted calories eating here :( Fish Tacos — minimum purchase of 2. Carne Asada Fries — don’t even. Bland. The salsa tasted like a mixture of Tabasco and Cholula, with an overdose of vinegar. Don’t let the location and name fool you!

I committed the ultimate Unilocal cardinal sin: getting food from somewhere without checking out the Unilocal reviews beforehand. I had to get my niece something to eat, and this place just happened to be right there. I ordered the cheese quesadilla. Cash only, $ 5, no kid’s size. A bit steep for a quesadilla, but at least it was grilled instead of microwaved, and it was on a full size tortilla. Also, there was plenty of cheesiness inside. My niece ate one piece and I ate the other two pieces. It tasted as expected: mediocre. I don’t think it’s entirely fair for me to judge this place solely on a quesadilla; however, I would be hesitant to come back and try other stuff just because, how shall I put this tactfully… they need to remodel…

I don’t know what the original Tacos El Gordo is, but based on tastiness and authenticity, I would never ever go here again and would tell everyone to avoid it. I just wanted the experience of eating fish tacos on the beach, and this was literally the only stand I could find. I guess if I had walked inland more I would’ve found a restaurant or shop instead of a stand. The tacos are made on flour tortillas(mistake #1, street tacos must be on small corn tortillas!) and had all this white sauce and cheese(mistake #2, tacos in Mexico do not have cheese, don’t usually have white sauce but have salsa and guacamole instead). Plus they were expensive on top of that at like $ 2.75 each?

The PB shack Tacos El Gordo is nothing like the real deal full sized restaurants of the same name in Chula Vista, National City, or Temecula, This place is a cheap imitation of the true Tijuana flavors served up at the«full service» locations that exist outside of major tourist destinations in San Diego. Our hero was flat out offended by how burnt their torta was and how dry and bland his flour tacos were. They don’t even serve corn tortillas here! If you’re in the mood for crap worse than Taco Bell at prices higher than 99 cents by the beach, you’ve found your destination, buddy! PROS: — After eating here, you should appreciate all REAL Mexican food. CONS: — The food is horrible. — No condiments available other than one tube of red hot sauce. — Dry and flavorless meats. — The uncovered trash cans right next to the outdoor seating attract a lot of flies. — Small portions. — Limited selection of items. — No covered seating. Good luck on a drizzling /windy /stormy /foggy /raining locusts kind of day. — Did I say the food was bad? — Just. Stop. Reading. Don’t go.
