If you have been to Sunset Cliffs, you have seen this white covered attraction. Your eyes can’t help to stray there and look at the rock and the birds visual display of their appreciation for the rock. It have become a spot for me to tell people, hey guess where I am at. Sunset Cliffs. Meet me near the BS Rock. What I find more funny is that we have a Unilocal about the BS Rock. You can’t help but to take pics and write a review. I dare you.

As a companion piece to my previous Unilocal on The Arch, I hereby offer you Bird Sh*t Rock. Located slightly south of The Arch, this piece of rock that sits alone receives its’ name from the obvious leavings of the birds that inhabit it. There are a variety of birds here too. I have seen the usual sea gulls, but also Pelicans and small shorebirds enjoying the view. Also, it is a great surf spot! According to Surf , Bird Sh*t Rock«is a reef break that has very consistent surf. Summer offers the optimum conditions for surfing. Ideal winds are from the east. Groundswells more frequent than windswells and the ideal swell direction is from the west. The quality of the surf isn’t affected by the tide. Likely to be crowded if working. Watch out for — Urchins — Rips /undertow — Rocks & Localism.» What I love the most and what earns Bird Sh*t Rock its’ 5 UnilocalSTARS: its’ awesome location along dramatic Sunset Cliffs makes it a natural spot to place art! And several times – over the many years I have been in the area, somehow people have managed to put something arty up on that slab full of sh*t. I recall in 2010 when the Senior class of Point Loma High School took the initiative to place a «2010» sign on the top. In 2007, what must have been some hippies put a colorful peace sign up. Over the years, according to the OB Rag blogsite, «There have been only six or seven installations, including, at least, a Christmas Tree; a toilet; a crab; a Pterodactyl; a Tiki Man; and, of course, the Peace sign.”(The 2010 would have been #8.) The Rag noted that«each has been a creative expression of our unique community, each has been FUN, and each has been, in the scheme of things, very TEMPORARY.» The birds know a good thing when they see it. Despite the mess they leave behind, Bird Sh*t Rock is certainly a beautiful sight & a great surf spot along scenic Sunset Cliffs.
