I know everyone is just crazy over Phils BBQ in San Diego so I’m sure the die hard Phils fans won’t say much about this place but I will say the BBQ is excellent.

My first experience here was a good one. I had the 2 meat platter. I chose the pulled pork and chicken. My sides were the mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with cheese and bacon. Everything was really good, we had no complaints at all. The free ice cream is a plus! I liked the sweet BBQ sauce best. We’ll be back for more another time

I am really sad to see low star reviews. I have visited this place about 10 times. Sometimes I eat there, sometimes I get to-go… I am from the South and know what BBQ is, Memphis, Carolinas, Kansas… Granted, this not Home BBQ. I mean, if you don’t see a smoker as you drive up, its not going to be the ‘real-deal’. But– for a franchised BBQ place, this place is really good!.. It’s great infact! I have always had very pleasant experiences with staff, and I do not find the menu confusing… It just requires reading. I love this place, and I think if you are checking out this review… You should go try it. –Plus. Free soft serve. !

…meh… You don’t have to wait till close to closing if you like to overpay for a small serving of dry meat and sides that taste like TV dinners…

Best bbq I’ve found in San Diego! I’m from Texas/Georgia and this place was like home! Sweet tea and everything! Will definitely be going back!!!

Walking in, I didn’t know what to expect. Normally, I would pull up a restaurant on Unilocal prior to dining in but this time, we made a spur of the moment decision to eat BBQ for lunch instead of pizza! I’m not going to lie, the menu was as confusing as confusing gets! My husband and I literally stared at the menu for 10 minutes. We both decided on pulled pork sandwiches and the manager helped breakdown the price for us before we got to the register, which was truly helpful, especially when budgeting. I like the bbq! I do suggest on getting the hoagie if you get the pulled pork because the buns, although toasted, get really soggy. I wasn’t a fan of their potato salad or baked beans. The potato salad was creamy and it looked like they used red potatoes and dill. The baked beans tasted very, very sweet. As for the sauce, there are 3 choices available: spicy, original and sweet. The drinks are expensive, $ 2.75 to be exact, because it’s a plastic souvenir cup. I’m not too thrilled by this because 1) it’s expensive for the customer 2) it’s bad for the environment vs paper cups. In conclusion, I don’t regret the experience but I probably wouldn’t make a special trip for BBQ at Dickey’s.

I will not come here again. 1) Mac & Cheese was already premade in a plastic bag; noodles and cheese pre mixed(saw it) 2) Ordered the beef brisket and it was all cut up like dog food. 3) Salad was not tasty. I spend 12 bucks on a meal that should of cost 8.50. Do your self a favor and go to Phils Bbq.

I recently moved from St. Louis where BBQ is the real deal! Other than Phils, I haven’t been able to find too many places that could even kinda compete(which is sooooo disappointing) in San Diego. After hearing good things about the Dickeys chain, I decided to give it a try… First of all, it still doesn’t touch Phil’s or STLBBQ. Not even close. It’s good & decent for a quick bite, but nothing to write home about. The employees were not the most friendly. We seemed like a burden to them more than anything(which always drives me crazy). I got the turkey sandwich & my boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich. Both came with two sides and a Dickey yellow cup(yay!). Our total was like $ 37, which I thought was rather high for the quality/amount of food & service we received. In all honesty, we’ll probably go back just because it’s close to home & I love BBQ and it’s decently quick, but it’s not a place I’m dying to get back to. The biggest plus was the free soft serve ice cream cone! That was pretty yummy! :)

This place was so bad it actually made me mad. I always grab food at Native Foods next door but decided to mix it up and give this place a shot as I’m a huge BBQ fan. The service was good which is the only reason I’m giving them a second star. I had the brisket which was a flavorless blob of meat. I tried adding their BBQ sauce to it but that just made it worse. It tasted like red vinegar. Now that I’m writing this review, I see all of their locations hover around three stars. They need to step it up or do themselves a favor and shut down.

I’m always on the lookout for a great bbq spot besides the usual Phil’s BBQ. I saw this place on a recent visit to Target and thought I would check it out. They have a smaller parking lot in front of them but to the side there is a much larger parking lot. When I entered I was immediately greeted and asked what I would like to order. I told the employee that I needed a few minutes to go over the menu since it was my first time here. About a minute after my above statement the employee got really pissed off and muttered under his breath an explicative and walked away. The other employees who were nearby that heard him just laughed and continued working. I feel pretty strongly that a positive customer service experience generally reflects great food so my SO and I decided to leave given that this was not what we received. Ultimately we decided to eat at Blaze next door and were glad we did. The employees were extremely friendly and made us some amazing pizzas.

Not quite like i remember from living in TX where I enjoyed BBQ across the state. But — not a bad substitute. The ribs were a little fatty but the spicy sauce was excellent. A solid 3.5 star performance. Good for the price paid. 1÷3÷16: I am updating my review or this place and bumping it up a star. The ribs were much better and leaner today but the real winner was the pulled pork sandwich. Lean meat, plenty of it, and a nicely toasted bun. Plus the same excellent spicy sauce kept warm in heated turrets. «A» for effort! Good BBQ is hard to find and usually expensive for what you actually get on the plate. This joint is a great value by comparison. We will be back.

The style set up for ordering is kind of like a cafeteria that starts right inside the door upon entrance. I ordered a plate of pulled pork and brisket with two sides and I chose the mac & cheese and coleslaw. My favorite out of the two meats was the pulled pork. I did get the watery feeling but that means it’s nice, tender and flavorful. That’s the fat and it’s tasty and the best part. I mixed the pulled pork and brisket together and after I added the sweet BBQ sauce it brought out the spice of the brisket and it mellowed out the pulled pork. I mixed both the pulled pork and the brisket together along with the sweet BBQ sauce. DELICIOUS ~ YUM-O! For the two sides I ordered. I had the Mac & Cheese and coleslaw. Neither sides were that great. In fact they were really bland. Both of these sides I have had at other BBQ joints are delicious. I do however am on the search for good coleslaw. SEEYOUSOON!

This is the second time I have tried Dickey’s and I am not impressed. I had the two meat plate(brisket and ribs) with a side of fried okra and potato salad. First the ribs were extremely dry with very little meat(probably from the dryness). Second the brisket was pulled apart like pulled pork rather than sliced. I’m not sure how they got the brisket wrong as the server asked me if I wanted the brisket sliced or chopped. I don’t recall pulled as an option. I did not care for the meat plate however there were a few items I did enjoy. The fried okra and potato salad was not half bad. I did enjoy the option of sauces and the help yourself ice cream.

Better than the reviews. I was hesitant coming here due to reviews, but happy I did. BBQ is all about the meat, and that’s where Dickey’s is the strongest. I ordered a 2 meat platter that consisted of pulled pork, brisket, mac & cheese, waffle fries, roll and sweet tea. I’m gonna build up, because I think that’s the most positive. The sweet tea is horrific! Bad after taste and just bad. The rolls are better off not being on the plate. Mac & cheese is a little above average for SD. That’s pretty damn good because SD mac & cheese is suffering. Waffle fries are great and are perfect for sampling sauces. Pulled pork is very good and I’m a big fan of their brisket. Brisket won it all over everything else. I only tried the spicy BBQ sauce out of my personal interest and I’m a fan. Could step up the the flavor but the spice and temperature is there. Love having the BBQ sauce heated and the ability of controlling the sauce ratio. They give pickles on the side and offer more at the fixings table. I’m a huge fan of pickles with BBQ for texture and complimenting. I wish all BBQ spots offer the option of pickles. Pretty cool they offer free soft serve ice cream too. I think Dickey’s is better than the reviews. Meat is solid along with the spicy BBQ sauce. They could easily kill it with more smoke in the meat and take a vacation down south to learn about sweet tea. Bread and rolls are amateur hour with BBQ in my opinion. If they concentrate on the fundamentals over fluff, they’ll be in the top of SDBBQ.

It was a nice night last night… A friend, Hubbs, and me decided to go to Dickey’s. Greeted by a man when we first came in, looking at the menu I decided to go with the brisket sandwich and share 2 sides with Hubbs. My sides were mac & cheese and jalpeno beans. Mac & cheese seemed dried out, however the beands were great, the jalapeño gives it a nice tiny kick. ***i am not into spicy so to me this was a great way to taste a little heat. I wish that my bun was a little toasted, the meat was pretty good. Hubbs got a brisket sandwhich too. We both got a large drink, followed by a free vanilla ice cream cone. It was a nice visit, one of the employee came out and gave us coupons. The seating inside seems a little too close to comfort, there are about 4 tables outside and we chose to enjoy the night time air. I would come back here, however just got meat, and no bread.

I came here for a late lunch the other day. This place is fairly newish. Parking wasn’t an issue because I came here right before 4pm or so. From what I read and the pictures I saw in the restaurant, this place is part of a barbecue chain that started in Texas years ago. As a result, my expectations were a little higher. I really wasn’t sure what to order so I asked the employee there what her favorite dishes /items were. I ended up ordering a barbecue chicken sandwich, macaroni n cheese, and waffle fries. My friend ordered ribs, beans, loaded mash potatoes, and a side of bread. The food came out within 10 minutes or so. The chicken was nice and tender, but not as flavorful as I imagined it would be. I thought the barbecue sauce was okay. The mac n cheese was average and the waffle fries were crispy, but tasted under salted. My friend mentioned that the ribs tasted salty. She shared a piece with me and after tasting it, I had to agree. The loaded mash potatoes, bread, and beans were just okay. They offer free soft serve vanilla ice cream. It was yellowish, icy textured versus smooth, and the taste wasn’t very good. The soft serve at Crack Donald’s and Dairy Queen tastes way better. The service was good initially, but we were never checked on or asked if everything was okay. Overall, I’d rate this place 3 stars. I think next time I’ll try the brisket and hopefully the rest of the food will be better, then I can update my review.

Dickey’s here in San Diego is just getting underway. I stopped in a few days after they officially opened and the jitter bugs were indeed evident. The food was quite good, but service still needed some refinement. I felt the ordering process a little tedious. I came in for lunch and order the Giant Baker + Meat or loaded baked potato topped with chopped smoked brisket, a side a jalapeño and pinto beans, and an iced tea. First of all, the baked potato was well baked, and they put a fair amount of smoked chopped brisket on top( ). The brisket was tender and had a mild smokey flavor. It could of used a little seasoning, but took care of that. I added their«original» BBQ sauce which was really good. I was not very fond of the sweet BBQ sauce and the Spicy BBQ sauce was okay. As a reference to the service, they forgot to put the cheddar cheese on the potato, but I took care of that too, when I went bake to the counter and asked for some. Nevertheless, it was a great baked potato with the added bonus of smoked meat. The pinto beans with jalapenos were very good. The bean were tender, seasoned well, and had a slight spice due to the bits of jalapeño pieces( ). As I was eating, they came around offering Fried Onion Tanglers, and let me tell you, they sure we a treat to eat( ). I put some on what I had left of my Baked Potato, and it was a great combination. I was a fan of that chopped brisket a top of that baked potato! Oh yes, and those fried onion tanglers…

I really regret coming in here. The food was appalling! Granted it’s opening week, so I understand running out of your popular items. but the items you do have shouldn’t be so sub-par. They ran out of pulled pork so I got the beef brisket(super dry, tough, and flavorless) and turkey breast(rubbery, bland, and tasted more like filler than actually turkey… tasted worse than $ 1 packaged bologna). Even when I doused everything with spicy bbq sauce, I couldn’t finish my food. Add the doughy, flavorless roll and 2 slices of pickles and onions to your tray, and you have a very very sad meal indeed. The fried okra is ok but for a two-meat meal with extremely small portions, $ 13 is a rip-off. The staff was cheery so the one star is for them. However the organization of the place sucks. I understand the assembly line tactic, but it takes so long for the first person to ask what you want + the space into the entry is so small that if you have more than 4 people, the line is already out the door and it discourages people even more from wanting to come in. For actual tasty BBQ that doesn’t make you want to throw your tray on the wall, go to BBQ House in OB, Bull’s in Linda Vista or any of the Phil’s locations, stay far far away from here!

Hickory tree dreams smoker filled with wood and meat smoke halo stained ribs. Mmm… Scent of hickory smoke in the parking lot. :-) I follow the the delicious aroma to Dickey’s. I order the 3 meat combo to get a feel for this place. The beef brisket is tender with a light smoky flavor. Goes nicely with either the original or the slightly sweeter bbq sauce. The pulled pork is tender enough to melt in your mouth. The smoky flavored pork is even better than the brisket. :-) The onion tanglers look kinda like french fries but instead are an explosion of onion and batter with spices flavor. So delicious. :-) The waffle fries are good but needed a bit of salt. While waiting for my ribs the owner, manager, and an employee came by to apologize from the wait as they were suffering from opening weekend hiccups. A half hour later I was given a full rack of ribs to compensate for the long wait. First rate customer service here! As the pork ribs were placed on the table the scent of hickory smoked meat excited my senses. I couldn’t wait to taste the glorious smoked pork ribs before me. The thin bark and tender meat beneath brought waves of pleasure to my mouth as I tasted the freshly made bbq. I slowly ate my ribs and savored the deliciousness and pray it will be as good on my next visit. 2nd visit 11:15am Saturday Ribs were removed from warming oven and the saran wrap removed. Very good flavor but lacking that fresh out of the smoker goodness. Onion tanglers were crunchy and had excellent flavor. Free soft serve better than any buffet but not quite as good as Dairy Queen.
