Mr. Spicy… MELOVEYOULONGTIME! It was so hard to find a Chinese restaurant that felt clean enough to order/dine at and didn’t leave me wondering if my meat was actually a mystery. This place is clean, organize, and comfortable! The woman is a sweetheart! She smiled the whole time. Here was my order: *House Special Spicy Pork Chops– THEBOMB! lol Perfectly cooked, right amount of spice, and ooooh the fat on the bones *Orange Chicken — By far, the 2ndBEST I’ve ever had. Very tender and juicy meat. The perfect hint of orange. And the glaze was AMAZING! Not spicy at all IMO. *Fish Dried Pot — Delicious. It was fried fish. I would have preferred more of a broiled kind of fish. But nonetheless, still pretty tasty. I’ve read reviews about the dried pots being spicy, to me it packed a little heat that quickly went away. On a scale from 1 – 10, I say the heat was a 5. *Shrimp Fried Rice — Ok, so you know how fried rice is usually greasy? This was not the case here. My inner fat girl was a little disappointed BUT, most people would be completely happy with it not being greasy. Here’s the real disappointment, a complete large order of fried rice, with only four shrimp! Please add more shrimp! The good news: the shrimp are better than bite size *Boiled Dumplings — Not so good. It was very bland and tasted like water and dough. The dumpling sauce is vinegary. I wasn’t a fan of either. The prices are very reasonable! And did I mention there was very little to no grease! I mean, I was hoping for the little takeout cartons dripping with grease lol kidding… Not kidding A must try! Your cravings will be satisfied!

The outside of the establishment is nondescript, but don’t let that fool you. The restaurant was clean, the service wonderful, and the food tasty at reasonable prices. I lowered one star to an overall four stars due to no alcohol being available, as I do like an adult beverage with my dinner every now and then. Give Mr. Spicy a try, as you won’t be disappointed. And order the orange chicken!

Love their dry pot, cumin lamb, and dan dan noodles. Orange chicken better than Panda. This place doesn’t disappoint and the food packed with flavor and spice, but not overwhelming. The lady that serves us is super nice and genuine also.

We come here for lunch at LEAST once a week. Their lunch specials are very generous for the price and the food is always amazing. They have a great variety to choose from, unlike places that give you 3 or 4 lunch special options.

The GPS will tell you to U turn on mission gorge, but it’s definitely not necessary, just turn left on Zion Ave! AMBIANCE: When entering the establishment, it looks like it once served takeout. I wasn’t exactly sure whether to go to the front and order or sit down and then pay. The lady behind the counter told us to take a seat though, so I was glad she was there to tell us so. The restaurant is small and there is one unisex bathroom. SERVICE: The lady behind the counter was GREAT! She was very inviting and answered all of our questions about the food. We quickly got our waters and food after ordering. Looked like the only people working this night was the waitress/server and two cooks in the back. The service here is above par compared to other asian restaurants. FOOD: If you enjoy spicy foods, this is a great place to excite your taste buds. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. I came in for dinner and shared 2 dishes between 2 people, we had leftovers that I ate the next day. We tried the dry hot pot with lamb, which was pretty decent. Flavors were good but I wish it was actually more dry and the lamb less fatty. The dry pot was definitely very spicy though. As for our second dish, we ordered the boiled fish with hot sauce which I enjoyed very much. There were many pieces of fish filet on top and lots of lettuce on the bottom, a large portion and very saucey. And of course with these dishes we had to get rice, which was 50 cents a bowl. I’ll definitely be coming back sometime to try more food on their menu.

If I could give zero stars I would. On New Year’s Day my fiancé and I came in and ordered the lunch specials that were under glass in bold on the table and the waitress tells us «sorry no» and we say«excuse me?» And she says«no today holiday» & my fiancé asks her«where does that say that on the menu and she shrugs her shoulders and so then we left. I know we cannot be the only people that think that it is unfair to attract people like us that drove here for a lunch special with«good» food and be denied for a «holiday» when there was no apparent restrictions on their menu. If you’re going to own a business I suggest you have it in writing! OVERHORRIBLECUSTOMERSERVICE& «BUSINESS»

A hidden gem located on mission gorge. You may have passed it since it is surrounded by all the major chains Carl’s Jr. Rubies etc. Trust me, is worth the search. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food and not the sugary salted Americanized stuff, this is the place for you. One key indicator(and no this is not racism) there are Chinese chefs and not a single Mexican cook in sight. Chinese people from China. That’s how authentic. I ordered the Dan Dan noodles which they mix table side. The dish was superb. I also got the wonton soup to which I witnessed one of the staff making by hand. Not the packaged or frozen stuff. Finally, I had the local flavor lamb. Legends are written about the flavors and awesomeness. And trust me, they live up to their name. If you like spicy, it is a heat seekers delight. It’s got the heat but still let’s the other flavors shine through. I only write reviews for great places as well as the worst. No in betweens. Do yourself a favor and got to Mr. Spicy UPDATE12/31/2015 My love for me spicy has brought me back numerous times. I have found the best menu item to date. If you eat nothing else at Mr Spicy, you must try the House Special Spicy Pork Chops. They are the best things I have eaten. Think of a fried chicken wing but pork. These will haunt my dreams until I get it again.

This is the cheap Chinese I’ve been looking for… Tentative 4 star possibly 5 star Chinese joint. Prices were very reasonable, service was above par for most Asian spots, the food was absolutely great. Got the chicken dry pot and it was spicy af. We were warned ahead of time. Can’t wait to try more especially that lunch special.

I have found my new favorite Chinese Restaurant! Well, it’s not real Chinese food, it would be like calling Taco Bell, Mexican cuisine… but you get my point. I ordered Mapo Tofu and Sesame Chicken. The Sesame Chicken was on point! It was fried to perfection and not excessively doughy. What I mean by that is that it consists of rather large chicken pieces with a light crispy coat with a savory sweet tangy sauce topped off with fresh sesame seeds. The Mapo Tofu consisted of small block cuts of tofu inside a dark oily chili sauce with chopped green onion. It is really good, but too strong by itself. It’s perfect with rice! The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The cost/quality/quantity of ingredients to price ratio is very good. I would give that ratio a perfect 5 stars. I’ve seen restaurants that would charge over $ 14 a plate for a fancy looking pasta dish which only costs pennies to make. You definitely get your money’s worth here. Service was average. I called in my order. They told me 15 minutes, I showed up 15 minutes later and I had to wait an additional 10 minutes. They just didn’t get to my order yet because they were kind of busy. I get it. No hit on stars here. No issues with parking. I parked in the front of the restaurant. Décor is Chinese themed. It is clean, simplistic and not too overbearing. Very casual, family friendly. If you have a taste for spicy food, this place will not disappoint.

This is not typical Chinese. Don’t go expecting what you would normally get. We ordered general chicken and local flavor lamb. General was just an oily salt lick and no other flavor going on. And the lamb was so ridiculously spicy! There was like 20 jalapeños and 20 red peppers with seeds all throughout! How do they expect anyone to eat this and not be hurting the next day? Lol. Won’t be back there!

Came here for lunch a few times. Got the lunch specials which includes egg drop soup. Each time that I’ve come the soup has been let’s say not hot. The food lacks a lot of flavor and tends to be a bit greasy. The service was good but I’ve been here three times and the food was just average at best.

Okay, so I’m not going to sit here and lie. I have eaten most restaurants in the San Diego Area. I also have live in San diego all my life. This is the best chinese food restaurant I have eaten in years . If you are looking for a great new restaurant to try. Well this is it. 1 con: a little pricy. I had order 3 on trays for me and my family. The total was 32 $;( However, again the food is great

I stopped by here to try the hot and sour soup. It did not come with the $ 5.99 lunch special, so I ordered a small soup. I was served a generous large bowl. It was really good. I am generally not a fan of tofu, but I ate all from the soup. Then I decided to have the $ 5.99 lunch special for mixed vegetables, steamed white rice and the egg drop soup. The egg drop soup was also pretty good with my added green pepper Tabasco sauce. Total cost was $ 10.80. Not too bad considering how much leftovers I had from this order.

Along with«don’t get involved in a land war in Asia,» «don’t get involved in a debate on Unilocal Talk» stands as one of the most important bits of wisdom. I was perhaps unwise when I got involved in a YT discussion on good Chinese food close to La Mesa. Initially all I had to offer was«go to Kearny Mesa.» Then I discovered this place, which I immediately recommended. Let me be clear. I’m not saying Mr. Spicy is as good as the best places on Convoy, but I am saying that it might be the best Chinese in San Diego that is not on Convoy. Upon entering, we were greeted by the sultry tones of 80s ballads.(American, not Chinese.) We ordered and didn’t have to late too long until our onion«pancake» arrived. It’s composition, thinner than other versions in San Diego, came off as a reasonably close approximation to what one might find in China. Then we turned to the cumin lamb, which is one of my go-to dishes. Mr. Spicy’s rendition was decent for San Diego although it came in at a rather tepid white boy spicy and with perhaps too many onions. The fried pork, which has thus far gotten more attention here on Unilocal, was indeed a better dish. It was coated in perhaps more breading than a Chinese version, but was still quite tasty. Despite its pig foundation, one might be excused for thinking it were fried chicken if one’s eyes were blindfolded. It’s also very garlicky if you’re into that sort of thing.(I am.) Summary: Good enough to dare posting on Unilocal Talk.

I typically would not rate a restaurant so highly on one visit & one dish, but if all I ever came back here for was the Boiled Fish w/Hot Sauce & they always made it the way I had it today, to me they deserve my rating. Too many places think to make a dish real spicy it has to ignite your mouth to where you lose all sense of taste & flavor and you need to drink copious amounts of liquids to get through the meal. Now I can handle super hot & super spicy but I am all about good flavors & the use of spices & peppers which cause pleasurable reactions to your palate. I pretty much already knew what dish I wanted to try before I entered the restaurant, and was kindly greeted by a waitress who spoke very little English. To me, not a problem. But it was rather amusing when I ordered the boiled fish and the only thing she kept repeating was«very spicy!’ and I repeatedly replied«Yes, I like spice». It almost became like a game to see who would stop first. Was this a spicy dish? Yes, but to me it was spicy in the best favorable way. I think to many it would have been too spicy, but I loved it. Even though it eventually began to cause me to ‘glisten’ on the forehead & under the eyes, I did not feel I needed to drink any water. In fact I felt drinking water would have diminished the sensory delight my palate was going through. If only a quarter of the other dishes on the menu give me this type of flavor experience, I will be a regular.

In a simple strip mall, nowhere near Convoy, you probably would never expect a relatively authentic Szechuannese establishment. I’ve had my eye on this place for awhile, but my date and I are never in the area! So, before we drove over to Qualcomm to catch the trolley for the«Big Bay Boom» fireworks spectacular, we hit up Mr. Spicy to see what he has to offer. We started off with the onion pancake. I was a fan. It was light, flakey, and didn’t taste very onion-y at all! Second to come out was the spicy wonton soup. I loved it! It looked spicy, but was relatively tame. Maybe a level 3 or 4 spice. The best part were the delicious homemade wontons. For our main dishes, we ordered the house special spicy pork chop and cumin lamb with onions. I can understand why the pork chop is a specialty. It tasted like spicy fried chicken and packed a serious punch. The cumin lamb wasn’t my thing, but my date seemed to enjoy it. Surprisingly, the service was much better than most Asian establishments. We got refills on our water and extra napkins without any problems. Here’s hoping that Mr. Spicy sticks around for awhile. Perhaps in the future there will be a Mrs. Spicy!

For about a month now, my sister kept telling me to try Szechuan food. I was very confused as I’ve never heard of this type of food, then come to find out it’s spicy Chinese food. Boy, does Mr. Spicy live up to its name and this Szechuan genre. I came here on a Wednesday night with my sister and her boyfriend, and it wasn’t very packed at all. I could smell the food as I walked in and it smelled amazing! The waitress working was the sweetest thing ever. There was one chef, but the food came out quick, and I was happy about that. I don’t think I would’ve been upset if it hadn’t come out as fast considering the circumstances(one chef, as I mentioned.) So we ordered 3 entrees: dan dan noodles, cumin beef, and chicken dry pot. The noodles came out first, and I fell in love. There’s such a contrast of flavors. The peanuts in it reminded me of pad Thai, but of course they didn’t taste the same at all. The beef came out next. It was good! My sister and her boyfriend mentioned how it was starting to get hot, but I couldn’t even tell. Then, the chicken came out. Fresh in a little pot with a fire still going on underneath it. After this, I definitely started tasting the spice. It wasn’t too much, but it was there. The waitress made sure to fill our water cups and fill our bowls of rice! Also, I like how she mixed the noodles for us as she set it on the table. Overall, cute little ma and pa type restaurant.

Perfect name for this place. They know their spices and the chef in the back was heated up yelling at everyone in the kitchen. I struggled with what to choose and the server recommended the spicy pork chop house special. Sounded great. Out comes my ice tea and it’s a can of Brisk. Bad start. Wish they told me that before bringing it out. Then comes out the giant plate of carnage. Looks so good. The color, the cuts and spice all over that deep fried amazingness. If you’re a wing fan you’re going to love this dish. It’s a very unique dish to me and I’d recommend checking it out in person. You can basically eat it like wings grabbing the big bones. Lots of quality grease and oils that accentuate the succulent pork inside around the bone. You won’t be able to stop gnawing on these bones. Can’t wait to get back and try some of their lamb dishes.
