Oh, dear. This one really pains me to write. let me be very clear on why I’m writing it: if this place is going to be serving food on a regular basis, they must improve. Hopefully this review will be constructive and not cause an uproar in the community. My fiancé’s father works for a Portuguese hall in rhode island. my fiancé himself grew up in a close-knit Portuguese community, serving as club officer numerous times. well, my fiancé’s folks are coming for their first-ever visit this weekend and Steven wanted to scout out this place to see if it’s somewhere his folks would enjoy. he had high hopes, since he has heard nothing but good about the local Portuguese community here in san diego. it started off as a good visit, except the waiter saying that they were out of the two things Steven wanted to try — octopus and steamed clams. no prob, bring out a linguica sandwich and some calamari. the drinks were good, service seemed fine. next thing Steven knew, the waiter was speaking Portuguese to the table next to him, asking the patrons if he could take their uneaten food to serve to Steven, since the kitchen was out of what Steven ordered. ok, seriously, what is wrong with that? it’s horrifying. re-serving food is beyond nasty, and assuming that Steven doesn’t speak Portuguese was highly offensive to him. Steven commented to the waiter in Portuguese and the waiter, realizing his mistake, turned ghostly white. he tried to apologize, but at that point it was too much of a mess to even bother. the bartender offered Steven a free drink to clear up the«confusion» — in Portuguese, Steven asked what confusion? the waiter asked to take food from someone’s plate to re-serve to him! no confusion there. the bartender, also surprised that Steven is fluent, also turned pale and backed off. then, to add insult to injury, some club bigwigs were dining that night. Steven saw the waiter carry over a big steaming bowl of what else? clams! the very thing Steven wanted and was told were not available. i want Steven to have a place that he can go to where he can speak his native language, where he can network and make friends and enjoy himself in a community like the one he left on the east coast. i want this place to work, for itself and for him. after this experience, though, i can’t say that he’ll be in a rush to head back any time soon. i really want to think that the mistakes made were because the staff and kitchen are new to serving food in this restaurant type setting. i really hope that can iron out those kinks and turn into a really wonderful place!
