I have been a member at that club since 2010(til present). I took a year break from chess last year though. I have to say that this is the nicest, coziest, friendliest place for chess lovers! Tournament director Chuck is a great chess enthusiast and a wonderful person. Club manager Bruce Baker is a National Master with many years of experience of running a club and teaching. The club holds wednesday night long tournament games(from 7 til whenever, longest time around 6 hrs). Each wednesday tournament is around 5 – 7 rounds. Every saturday the club holds Saturday Gambito, a whole day tournament consisting of 4 rounds. It normally starts around 10AM. In addition club has nights for scholastic chess and classes. The club is located right on the edge of Balboa park on Sixth Avenue, parking normally along sixth avenue on both sides. I never had an issue parking. Balboa Park is a beautiful huge park in the middle of central San Diego close to downtown, many things to do there as well(including many museums, San Diego Zoo, art boutiques, promenade, tennis courts, sports fields, hiking trails, international houses, botanical garden, etc). I would recommend San Diego Chess Club to any chess lover who wants to play seriously. Club has yearly fee that can get prorated. Also, you have to be an active member of USCF to participate in tournaments. The fee to enter wednesday tournament is $ 25. Gambito is $ 20 – 25 as well. I think they have around 200 members including couple IMs and few NMs. When I started playing there in 2010 my rating was 1200, now its 1400ss. I normally play in Reserve section(U1600).
