1 star for the food, 1 star for the friendly service. I tried TGSB for the first time at the Eastlake food truck gathering on 8⁄10. With 6 other trucks in attendance the place was PACKED and TGSB was the only truck without a line. I ordered 2 spicy pork tacos for myself and a trifecta grilled cheese sandwich for the boyfriend. The grilled cheese sandwich was actually pretty amazing although I can’t say the same for the tacos. As a previous reviewer said, they weren’t spicy. The pineapple and pickled red onion were a nice touch though. My biggest gripe had to do with our two orders of truffle fries. I’m a truffle fries fiend and I was expecting a decent serving size considering it was $ 3.50 each. When I got my orders I felt jipped. If I combined the two THEN it would look like $ 3.50 worth. Womp womp womp :( If you’re ever at a food truck gathering and both TGSB and Devilicious are there, go to Devilicious.

The Gathering Spot Bistrotruck is one of San Diego’s newest food trucks. They had a number of things today including tater tots, hot dogs, and tacos. The spicy pork tacos were just okay. The pork was neither spicy nor tender. The pineapple was an interesting addition, but didn’t add anything special to the tacos. Three decently sized tacos for $ 6 is a fair price by food truck standards. But, in an increasingly competitive market, a food truck needs to offer something a bit more tantalizing. Mediocre tacos simply won’t cut it anymore. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill construction site food trucks. I need to be wowed. Perhaps some of the other food was better, but the tacos were a miss for me.

We caught them out by the Live Wire during last week’s Drinkabout. Since it was between buses, we tried out their grilled cheese and washed it down with an order of churritos for dessert. The grilled cheese’s bread was ideally golden brown, with the three cheese interior well-proportioned and melted together, yet they were not uncomfortably magma-hot. Kudos also for the gazpacho shot. I’m already a gazpacho fiend, and including it as a dipping sauce is an ideal adaptation of the tried and true grilled-cheese-and-soup combo for the food truck experience. The churritos were about ten bite-sized churros — a lot for one person, but convenient for sharing — fresh and hot, tossed in cinnamon and sugar and then finished with a vanilla drizzle. Both courses were about $ 10; very agreeable for the quality.

Congrats to the newest Food Truck to serve San Diego! I had a chance to try them out at the 57 Degrees Food Truck Gathering yesterday and hopefully watch a business launch into the stratosphere once they gain momentum. So far so good, they had some problems with their fryer and were a little slow with their truffle fries but I’d wait forever for truffle anything. My indoctrination to this bistrotruck had me trying out the Slidertini, an impressive lil monster that had me closing my eyes and sounding like a lawnmower(mmmm.nummm…nummm…nummm)! There was so much flavor packed into such a small package, it puts your mind through taste frenzy. This slider is legit and I hope they can do a 2fer special because one is not enough! So I had to wait for fries like aforementioned but I got em hot and before they took them off the menu… Winning! Round two had me in for the Trifecta grilled cheese which was gouda, sharp cheddar and pepper jack cheese with a shot of gazpacho. As I dunked my sammie into the soup and bit into the crunchy and gooey mess, the flavors hit me like Shawne Merriman(pre steroids of course)…Lights out! Great balance between the savory, sweet, hot and cold. I’m gonna really enjoy following the Gathering Spot and try out all that they create. So far from what I’ve seen, they’ve got great ideas and a tasty future in San Diego.

Being a picky eater, I find it difficult to find stuff to eat at some trucks and this truck is one of those where the menu varies and is eclectic. I hate telling someone who concocted a gourmet taco I don’t want X on my tacos. Their Carne asada tacos were really good. I started this review months ago and neglected to complete it. Better late than never. I wished they’d kept at it, I enjoyed talking to the guy and would love to get his recipe for those tacos, or pickled onions at least.
