Pretty sure this place is closed and is now called New York on Rye…

So this place is closed. Closed as in it’s not longer Top Bun and is re-opening as another restaurant soon. I drove by the other other day and noticed a new sign being installed and lots of remodeling and construction happening to the front and inside of the restaurant. The new sign read«New York on Rye.» After a quick Unilocal search I found out New York on Rye is a popular food truck in San Diego. It appears they’ll be opening a permanent location very soon then. I enjoyed Top Bun, but I’m definitely looking forward to checking out New York on Rye once it opens up.

This place is horrible. The supposed Italian bread is like hot dog buns. The fries were soggy and from frozen. The sandwich was horrible, the vegetables weren’t cut thin, meat was fatty and gross. Total waste of money. I could make a better sandwich in 2 minutes.

I decided to write this review because I wanted to let everyone to know just how incredible this place really is. A little background. I have been dining here for the past 9 years. Throughout this time it has undergone a couple of name changes and a remodeling but surprisingly the menu has stayed completely intact and has even been improved on in a number of ways. I have since moved out of the area but whenever I Get a craving I will stop in for a quick bite to eat. Until recently my top two favorite sandwiches here were the«San Diego Chicken». If I were to recommend anything this would be it. The melted provolone over grilled chicken and with sweet peppers and lettuce is a culmination of sammich deliciousness! I also enjoy the«Turkey Grinder» if your looking to grab a cold sub this is it. i get mine with extra dressing! that was until my most recent visit… Today I decided to try something new. something I have never seen or noticed on this menu before. (spoiler alert if you don’t like spicy don’t read anymore) the«Chipotle so good» my new all time favorite. The chipotle chicken is perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice to it and the chipotle gouda is incredible but thats not all they add bacon lettuce and avocado and then drizzle a mouth watering Cajun Remoulade Dressing on top. words cannot describe just how amazing this creation really is. I’m Already planning my next lunch date with the«chipotle so good» if you get the chance try this one out! Oh and BTW you get a free fresh baked cookie with every combo! I dont know why but there is something nostalgic about to reaching into the sandwhich bag searching for that delicious treat to finish off the meal. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy your next meal here as much as I do!

I don’t know anything about the sandwiches here. Very little of whats in them is on my diet. But what I can tell you is this: Their Gala Apple salad is one of the most incredible things I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. This is going to be a very short review of it, as words simply cannot describe how wonderful a salad this is! I highly recommend trying the Gala Apple salad at Top Bun. It’s an experience of a lifetime — yes, it’s THATGOOD. Keep up the good work, guys!

Sandwiches here are solid — they’re huge and all of the ingredients are on point. I had the pesto chicken sandwich and it hit the spot. Good people, good food — Top Bun is a no brainer for a great lunchtime sandwich spot!

After ordering a sandwich to-go and getting back to my office and realizing they forgot the bacon, I decided to call and let them know. Brett was extremely helpful and told me that the next time I came in my sandwich would be free. Well he kept that promise and on my next visit my sandwich combo was free. Unfortunately there was another mishap where they forgot my avocado this time lol. I spoke to the man at the register who I am assuming is the owner and not only did he personally deliver a cup of avocado to my table but he also had an entire new sandwich made for me along with a handful of cookies! I literally have never had a bad sandwich at this place and will continue to come back for the food along with the amazing customer service that they display. Thanks Top Bun!

I had been here a few times previously when it was under a different name and ownership. I decided to stop in today as I’m largely burned out on other lunch options along Miramar. The place looks much the same as it ever has, with a large menu board behind the register, and it was nice to see some of my favorite sandwiches were still on the menu even though the previous owners are long gone. I’m a huge pastrami fan so I ordered their grilled pastrami melt. It was great. Served hot on toasted rye with plenty of mustard, horseradish, and pickles, it had just the right amount of acid and bite to go with the succulent meat. I pulled out my phone and saw that they had a ‘check-in’ offer so I redeemed that for a bag of chips which made my meal even better. If I’m being honest, I’ can’t say that I’ll come back often as I try not to eat too many carbs. But if I decide to have a sandwich on my cheat day, I could easily see myself returning here. Very very good.

This place had changed to various sandwiches places and this is the first one to not offer a veggie sandwich. The guy who rang me up wanted to charge me $ 7 for the build ur own plus avocado but the other guy working didn’t charge me for the meat I didn’t order. As I requested. Nothing special on the menu for similar sandwiches u can get in the area for same or cheaper prices so I don’t plan on returning. Update: when i ate my sandwich I found jalapeños and peppercini’s which I did not order since I don’t like spicy food. I removed them by hand. One positive, they added a small fresh baked cookie. Also, the bread was fresh.

Awesome fresh sandwiches. Fresh bread, plenty of sauce and ingredients. We always bring a big group from work and they are happy to accommodate us. I love the chipotle chicken. Much better than the loveless processed sandwiches local chains serve. I highly recommend.

Good solid sandwich, but nothing to write home about. It’s a cool joint, good amount of seating, and it’s comfy. I was trying to decide between the #13(chipotle chicken) and the #4(Turkey Day). The guy taking my order recommended the #13, so that’s what I got. Love the bread. It’s soft, but held up well to all of the ingredients. The chicken was a little dry in spots. In others it was nice and juicy, but it wasn’t consistent. The sauce could have had more heat for me. Liked the veggies, diced thin and they were fresh. They have an above average selection, and had some interesting choices. Friendly guys, and the sandwich was out quickly. It was a solid lunch, and I’ll return.

I drive past here everyday while running errands and I only recently decided to stop in. I came in around 20 past 3pm, and was sad to see that I had missed the closing of the store. After reading the store hours, the owner, Brett, opened up and invited me in. The cheesesteak that I picked up for a co-worker was bar none the best one you can find in San Diego, he explained as he ate it. We would have paid $ 15 for a cheesesteak that was HALF as good elsewhere, so for under $ 10, it’s a great deal. The italian grinder was as close to being perfect as one can get. Fresh, crisp lettuce, excellent boar’s head meats, peppers, the list goes on. I will definitely be eating here in the future. Pros: –High quality boar’s head meat –Fresh baked french rolls –Warm, welcoming environment –Excellent customer service –I saw him season the ribeye for the cheesesteak as he made it. That’s a big deal that some shops skimp on or forget to to all together. –Free cookie! Cons: I got there late,(but he served me regardless! With a smile!) Hopefully I get there before closing, today. Thanks for the great meal!

I used to come here all the time and most of the sandwiches I tried were really good. I especially liked the Dudley’s Cheesesteak. Recently I placed an order to go for my coworkers and I and in hours of getting amazing food unfortunately we were quite unsatisfied. The italian grinder was soggy, lacked flavor and looked like it had been made in a hurry… Based on that I probably won’t be going back for a while

This place used to be good before this last name change. So disappointed today with our sandwiches after coming back here a few months after the first try. Today the sandwiches were both bland and missing ingredients, plus for the second time now they only served two people one cookie, we had to ask for our second one. We got the #4 and it was missing the signature herb stuffing filling! We also got the Italian grinder and it was not only missing the sweet peppers but pretty much had no meat on it(see attached photo) and tasted like bread and vinegar. I honestly would prefer subway any day over what we received, especially for nearly $ 8 a sandwich plus extra for chips and water. Shame on this business for gipping customers out of the quality that we were supposed to be paying for. Never coming back here.

As far as I’m aware, this is the 3rd iteration of a sandwich shop at this particular location and as they say, 3rd time’s a charm. A true statement for Top Bun. Keeping with the theme of 3s, Top Bun hits on my 3 requirements for an eatery: 1) Excellent quality food(Boar’s Head meats — need I say more?) 2) Fair price representative of the food quality 3) Friendly customer service Highly recommend the Dudley’s Cheesesteak WITH a side of Boar’s Head horseradish. It was a wonderful suggestion by the owner and the unique flavor of the Boar’s Head horseradish really complements the cheesesteak well and adds a flavorful dimension that keeps me coming back for more!

Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost rider, requesting a plain sandwich Air Boss Johnson: That’s a negative Ghost Rider, no plain sandwiches here! That’s right, nothing plain about these sandwiches here at Top Bun. To start, you have over 15 sandwiches to choose from! If you feel like creating your own, go right ahead because you have that option to do so as well. The sandwich I had was called The Sapper. Charlie: What’s in it? Maverick: Uh, that’s classified. Charlie: It’s what? Maverick: It’s classified. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you… …but I’ll tell you anyway. It had Turkey, pastrami, roast beef, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, mayo on a French Roll. Weird thing is, mines came with all the items listed except Avocado =( And red onions were put in there too. A few mistakes but I was hungry and didn’t feel like complaining so I ate my sandwich. It was still pretty good. For $ 2.50 more you get chips and a drink. *free chocolate chip cookie with every sandwich.(those cookies are super good!!) Friendly staff, nice décor.(Some of the tables needed to be wiped down) Quick Suggestion: put out little containers for the variety of hot sauces you had out. Didn’t want to have to walk back and forth over to the counter for the condiments. Overall, great alternative to those other foot long places. **Another plus: They use Boar’s Head meats. Great quality meats! Btw: for all you young bucks reading this review, I was making references to the movie Top Gun. Great movie, check it out! I’d come back.

Came here with another classmate, she said it was bomb! I tried to place my order for a BLT. They had no bacon! So I ordered a cheesesteak with NOMUSHROOMS! I was specific, my classmate heard me and the guy wrote it on the bag. I had mushrooms and another surprise PICKLES! I read the menu over and over there no listing of pickles. Very weird and odd??? It’s a sandwich, how can you mess that up? I felt the cook was hesitant to give me food anyways, I knew something was up! My sandwich was good even though I was gagging on the mushrooms. And I left a tip, how sad.

Never again. Worst food experience in years, and maybe the worst of all time. Come in and they’re jumping down your throat to take your order before you can even glimpse at the menu. Kind of getting a smug vibe from the 2 at the register and notice a lot of people in the back, more than dining at lunch time. Order a pastrami sandwich for $ 8 and add $ 2.50 for drink and chips. All ready writing it to go without asking me when I wanted to eat there. Took over 15 minutes for them to come running out spouting my name with no one before or after me. I respond and he gives my order to another customer and runs back in. Then I have to get up and ask for my drink. I ask for an iced tea. He just throws a small red raspberry flavored iced tea without letting me know it’s flavored. Then scrounge through a weak selection of generic chips. The $ 8 pastrami sandwich was average size that had twice as much sauerkraut to pastrami. The pastrami was hardly warm and bottom bread was soaked through to mush. On the way out there’s a house hold plastic trash can knee high to discard your waste. A hand written sign to not throw away your baskets, but no where to put them. The place is dirty with not one person coming out to wipe down tables after people, push in chairs or clean off trash on the tables. They need to step their game up 1000 x’s if they want to charge $ 12 for a sandwich lunch. CONS: — Everything PROS: — Fake brick wall paper
