Great fresh fish selection. Delicious quality rolls. The carrot ginger dressing on their side salad is amazing. The nigiri portions are very generous.

Pretty good sushi place overall. The staff is really nice and the rolls were all pretty good. I had the Smokin’ Roll and the Philly Roll and they were both really good. If you ask them, they can really adjust the sushi to the way you want it, I personally wanted all of the salmon to be fully cooked and they were happy to do that for me. The ingredients are pretty fresh and tasty. I really recommend this place for people who are vegetarian. They have a good amount of meat free rolls and appetizers that are really delicious. Good place to eat in Kearny Mesa(San Diego, CA).

Came here by myself for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon(after 1pm). Was planning to go to Niban, but it was closed. Saw this place along the way. Made a U-turn and thought I’d give it a shot. There were NO customers. But, it was a Sunday — hoping I’d just missed the lunch hour rush. Surprised by the grossly sticky floor as the waitress showed me to my table. Noticed that her shoes made a loud sticky noise as she left my table to return to the counter(so it wasn’t just that something was spilled near my table, and not adequately cleaned up). Decided to go with one of the lunch specials(chicken teriyaki with a shrimp tempura roll). And a diet pepsi. Was promptly brought my drink. Yuck! Tasted like the bottom of the tap stuff, but a really watered down version. Normally I wouldn’t say anything, but i was really thirsty(and they didn’t bring me – or ask me if I wanted — a water). I brought the pepsi up to the counter(squeak, squeak, squeak on the sticky floor) and very politely suggested that it might possibly be the bottom of the tap? Waitress was apologetic and said she’d check. Brought me another one — tasted the same. Took a good look at it this time. Obviously some watered down substance. I asked for a water. The miso soup came. It didn’t taste right. I had 2 bites and pushed it aside. At least it was hot. Then came the sushi roll, ahead of the chicken teriyaki. Was surprised at the tiny portion. Was not brought wasabi/ginger — or a little bowl to dip. Waited a couple minutes(already felt bad for them because they had to know that pepsi was bad)… but no one came back. So I squeaked BACK up to the front. Waited a minute or two for someone to notice me(again, I was the only one in the restaurant). When she brought it to my table, I noticed the wasabi looked like it came from a squeeze tube. Oh well, this wasn’t Niban. Took a bite of the roll– strangest tasting shrimp tempura roll I’ve ever eaten. Then, came the chicken teriyaki/rice special. Portion was very small. Boy, was I missing Niban. Took a bite — UGH! Worst tasting chicken teriyaki I’ve ever had. And I’ve eaten a lot of chicken teriyaki. Not only was it barely warm — it was grisly! After a couple pieces, I started picking the fat off with my fingers. One has to inspect the meat to do that. While picking off the fat, noticed the discoloration in the chicken pieces(which was disguised by the sauce from afar). No wonder it tasted bad — it was obviously old! Had I not been ravenous, I would’ve walked away. The waitress, who had obviously noticed me picking the chicken with my fingers, asked me how my chicken was. I politely let her know that it tasted a little funny to me, and it was more grisly than I was used to. She asked me what«grisly» meant. I pointed to the small pile of fat on the corner of my plate. She offered me the steak teriyaki lunch special. I politely declined — this was a disaster. There were a couple of pieces of broccoli and 2 slices of carrot on the side of my plate. The broccoli pieces, although cold, weren’t bad. The carrot slices were visibly dried out, so I didn’t touch them. Total was $ 9.18(with tax). Gave her $ 11(not her fault the food is bad) and got outta there. Wouldn’t wish this lunch on my worst enemy. Just another note, even the straw in my water glass had a hole in it. Turned the straw upside down(not knowing where the hole was)… still sucking air. In retrospect, it was so bad that it’s kinda funny. Just hope I’m not hugging the porcelain bowl tonight — that won’t be funny.

I was in the area & hadn’t eaten lunch, so I ambled in here for a bite. And a «bite» it was. Sliced sashimi & a salmon handroll. SO skimpy i needed a magnifying glass. Spent almost $ 22(without tip) & I was starving afterwards. Seriously, lunch for one at a strip mall in Clairemont? I don’t know who spends $ 50 on sushi lunch for 2, do you?

Great customer service. We ordered two rolls with spicy tuna, one was the red dragon roll and the other the lemon twist. Our waitress brought me a sample of the tuna just to make sure it wouldn’t be too spicy. Both rolls were amazing, however the red dragon roll was just a little bit too hot for me. We also ordered sashimi which was on point. So good! We will be back.

Got the twisted fries and the following rolls: Fire Salmon, Scalamari, and Boston. Twisted fries are really good with the perfect crunch and just enough sauce. All the rolls were made well and very soft. The only minor complaint would be that there’s a lot of imitation crab inside the rolls, but it didn’t bother me too much. The service was great(both times I went). Very friendly staff. Even though it was 10 mins until they closed for their lunch break, they had no problem taking us in. The really nice female worker(owner?) did not rush us and we watched her close up after we left, which showed she was waiting for us to finish eating the entire time when she could’ve turned us away.

Molly is sushi chef and co-owner at Twisted Sushi, in the«Madison square» in Clairemont. Molly says she had a sushi place in Alpine for 9 years before moving to this newish location. On my first visit, I sat at the sushi counter and asked Molly to surprise me! I loved my Ceviche roll with asparagus shrimp and yellowtail. It had a lovely kiss of lemon, crunchy crumbs(Panko?) and fresh moist rice, and the shrimp had a nice firm texture. The crunch of the tempura flakes and whatever else Molly said to me in my Chardonnay sushi euphoria was as hypnotic and satisfying as sushi can get.(-; Highly recommended. Since that first visit, I have returned many times to Twisted Sushi, bringing other family members. Everything is fresh and tasty. The rice is always moist, and the ginger is moist and fresh tasting. I always see Molly working hard behind the sushi counter. Oddly enough, you can get Twisted fries for free with a Unilocal check-in, while the offer lasts. Why would you want fries with your nice healthy, low-fat sushi? I’m not sure, but they are fun to share when you’re with a group of family or friends! Happy hour offers a small selection of super tasty items, such as the Shrimp tempura roll for $ 5.50. We love the crunchy tempura crumbs on the shrimp tempura roll. I even tried a small hot sake for $ 1.95 during happy hour. Happy hour is from 5 til 7pm, dine in only. Here are some other items which we’ve enjoyed at Twisted Sushi:
Spicy shrimp boat Panacotta(dessert) Scalamari roll and albino rhino roll Spicy yellowtail deluxe 13.95. Fried Snow White 7.95 Shrimp tempura roll 7.95(or $ 5.50 during happy hour) The atmosphere is casual and friendly. The freshness of the food items is what impresses me. Highly recommended.

So I have been here twice now and the only reason this place gets 3 stars is for the service. How so? You say? The first visit we made it just in time for happy hour. All the food was delicious, the garlic wings were cooked perfectly and the sushi was great. The service was awesome as well. Came here last night and the service was still the same but the quality of the food or whomever was the chef changed. The garlic wings were greasy and when you bit into them you just tasted grease. The sushi didn’t taste as fresh either. The fries were still good, but it’s kinda hard to mess up fries. Too bad, I really liked this plsce. Not sure if I will be back.

This location is very relaxing, the staff is very friendly. First time coming to this restaurant and it was awesome. The food was delicious! The location itself is very clean and welcoming. It can be pricey but its worth it. Why wait at other places just because the sushi rolls is cheap?! Sushi rolls we’re freshly prepared. One lady thats the waitress she is super friendly and very attentive to customers. When me and my Fam went to eat there we notice how she was very sweet and friendly to a couple’s children. I don’t often see staff really friendly with kids, definitely kids friendly. You can also go and have a drink and chat with your friends :) Tater Tots with Bacon is a must! Las Vegas Roll is awesome!!! California crunch roll was delicious! Friend calamari roll is a delicious too!!!

Stopped by here for a late lunch early dinner. Very welcoming place, and nice location. Décor is very hip and fresh. Got seated to the bar right away, they were close to closing for dinner prep so the place was very quiet. Mikey the chef very cool guy and all for conversation :) The menu has variety and something to choose from even for a picky eater. The rolls are fair priced, not ur traditional sushi, it’s very twisted what they got going on with their rolls lol so it’s fun to try something new. The rolls carry alot of different flavors and hints of the sushi, not a bad thing if that is what you prefer. It’s all a matter of taste. The apptizer which we got for free were the twisted fries, very interesting with spicy mayo and nice crunch. Great lil filler for two ppl. We ordered 3 rolls and a bottle of coffee nigori(which I call dori… like the blue fish from nemo… yeah don’t ask lol) The bf ordered an albino rhino roll, for the most part it’s albacore(I’m not the biggest fan but he loved it) Next was a calamari roll which you guessed it’s calamari. Bf liked that one too. I ordered the cervechi roll, alot going on there but very tasty and strong. The presentation of the rolls were very nice, and the size were prefect for eating in one bite. The coffee nigori, was very tasty definitely taste the coffee flavor :) We would come back again for a visit of course.

Nice sushi place. The staff here is friendly. Pricing is fair. The happy hour prices are really good. I enjoyed the calamari catepillar roll, twisted fries, garlic noodles, garlic edamame, california roll and the philly roll. Each were tasty. The garlic edamame has a sauce that is just right. The calamari roll has a crucnhy texture and is tasty. The twisted fries has a siracha mayo and ell sauce dressing, simple and super tasty. There is plenty of seating for small groups and large groups. You can also choose to sit at the counter. Plenty of parking available here. And located in a shopping center with other foodie choices.

Solid 4 stars, with room to round up! Friendly staff, quality sushi, and great value! Went here for dinner, and the place was pretty much empty spare one or two diners at the bar. We were seated immediately(obviously.) With 10 minutes of happy hour to spare and hangry tummies influencing our decision, we ended up ordering like half of the happy hour menu. YOLO right?(sarcasm, please don’t actually continue the use of YOLO in real life. haha). So we started with the salted edamame, california roll, fried calamari roll, and twisted fries.(Check in on Unilocal and the fries are free!). Our orders arrive fairly quickly. I mean like I said the place was pretty empty. However, my only gripe is that we weren’t given any plates and resorted to extra napkins to substitute. The edamame was good except the salt was kind of just dumped on top instead of evenly mixed/sprinkled. The twisted fries were pretty bombtastic though! Crispy fries drenched in eel sauce, garlic mayo, and spicy mayo. My wimpy taste buds suffered through the spice for them, I mean who doesn’t like eel sauce?! MM So bomb, but I might order it sans spicy mayo next time. Side note– their spicy mayo seemed to have more of a kick than most places. to me at least. Then again I just can’t handle any spice to begin with so I’m probably not the best judge for that. Anyway, the rolls were fresh and well sized. I hate when sushi places make dinky little rolls and charge up the butt for it. The california roll was standard to me, and I thought it had more crab than your average, which I enjoyed. The calamari in the fried calamari roll was perfectly crispy and the roll was topped with spicy mayo and dots of siracha on it, pow. my tongue was hating me at this point for all the spicy-ness that was ensuing, but still good nonetheless! Devoured those rolls and decided on ordering two more– the triple time roll and a rainbow roll.(Full price, not happy hour). The rainbow roll was the same california roll base, but with your standard rainbow roll toppings, again good sized and tasted fresh. and only $ 9.95! I feel like some sushi places charge more for rainbow roll because of the fresh toppings. Now onto the triple time roll. oh ehm gee. I thought it would be regular sized, but it is deep fried. I swear I’ve had deep fried rolls that cost more and were half the size so I was pleasantly surprised it was huge. and only $ 9.95! Definitely more on the sweeter side and had the perfect crisp. It was well worth it, we actually didn’t even finish the roll. Our bill comes and another surprise-only about $ 32 for our table of four! I mean it does make sense since we did order from the happy hour menu and used the Unilocal check in deal, but regardless we definitely left with happy tummies and an even happier wallet. I highly recommend giving this place a shot, especially for happy hour. There’s more rolls on the menu that I wanted to try, but we were just too full. The staff here is super friendly, and I can’t get over the fact that we didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for quality sushi. I’m also still day dreaming about those fries right now… mmmm.

So we stopped by this place after hitting up Comickaze in the same shopping plaza. This sushi joint is located on the corner where a bakery /ice cream shop used to be. Unilocal app on my phone was acting up, so I couldn’t check in. We were greeted and seated upon entering. The staff is quite friendly. Service here is good. We happened to come during happy hour, so there were specials available. Since it was just me, the wifey, and my god daughter we didn’t order a lot. My god daughter wanted Twisted Fries and the California Roll. My wife told me to order whatever sounded good. We ended up ordering several items from the happy hour menu: Twisted Fries, California Roll, Boston Roll, and Fried Calamari Roll; and then we added a Fire Salmon Roll for good measure(non-happy hour). The Twisted Fries topped with garlic mayo, spicy mayo, and eel sauce were hot, crispy, and tasty. A nice blend of flavors that work well together. Unilocal check in gets you a free order! The California Roll was just okay. Not the style I’m used to. The crab they put in the roll is shredded and mixed with too much mayo(IMO) and it is the dominant taste. I’m use to the crab being in a bigger piece and maybe just lightly brushed with mayo versus shredded and mixed(with mayo). Also, I’m use to pieces of cucumber in the California Roll. I don’t think our roll had any… or it’s shredded and I couldn’t taste it? We weren’t too excited about their style of California Roll and it ended up being the base for two other rolls we ordered(Boston and Fire Salmon). Luckily the toppings of the albacore on the Boston and the salmon on the Fire Salmon Roll was good. My favorite roll was the Fried Calamari Roll(no California Roll base). Good mix of textures and taste. Service = good(friendly and attentive) Fries = good(tasty) California Roll = I’m not a fan, it was just okay Boston Roll = above okay only because of the albacore Fried Calamari Roll = good(if you like crunchy) Restaurant = clean, plenty of seating, nice décor Overall, the place was good. Next time I’ll order different rolls and avoid the California Roll base.

Convoy is convoluted with new sushi joints that seem to crop up every other day. It is difficult to last in this market if you are unable to differentiate yourself from the competitors. Twisted Sushi is a new player on the field, considering how they have been open for only 2 months, but I can see their potential! To be upfront, I placed a to-go food order in person, so I am strictly commenting on the accessibility and food. Location: Not the best, as not many people frequent the plaza where this restaurant is located. If you’re going westbound on Clairemont, you’d have to pass the 805 freeway, go past the restaurant and make a U-turn at the first availability. I felt like I would accidentally get on the freeway when I was trying to find this place. Food: We ordered the Ceviche roll, Phoenix roll and a California roll for two people. The ceviche roll was the priciest of them all(~$ 16), but well worth it. Whoever came up with this is genius! I love the varied textures(the crunchy asparagus and roe elements were the best!) and flavors which made for an amazing eating experience. The phoenix roll was also very tasty, which contains shrimp tempura centers topped with unagi, avocado and some sriracha/garlic sauce. Even the California roll was dang decent. We only got it since we were afraid 2 specialty rolls wouldn’t be enough food, but it held its own! I plan to revisit for a proper sit-down meal in the future and perhaps provide an updated review.

A meal at Twisted Sushi is a wonderful treat of an experience! I caught them at happy hour, which included $ 2 large hot sake + a few beer deals, as well as a few random rolls from the sushi menu that rotate every month. The regular edamame was simple and lightly salted — great for any edamame traditionalist! I also had an oyster shooter — a raw, fresh oyster topped with masago and green onion. The oyster was fresh and well-shucked; it was a nice, delicate appetizer. I also ordered one of the rotating happy hour rolls — the calamari roll. The panko crumbs on the crunchy roll was light compared to other crunchy rolls I’ve had — I liked this a lot, as it let me taste the other components of the roll while appreciating the light crunchy texture! The staff stole the show for me; everyone, servers and chefs alike, were welcoming and wonderfully enthusiastic. They had friendly conversations with me about the food, and they were a lot of fun when a nearby table asked for photos. It wasn’t too busy at the time, so they offered to take their photos in various poses, etc. Especially in the service industry, it was a rare gem of not only patience, but genuine excitement! If you dine here, you can expect a great, well-rounded experience both in the quality of food and the caliber of service. I’m yet to try their nigiri — that’ll have to be next on the to-do list!

Twisted Sushi is the next in a line of occupants of this space; it’s definitely an improvement over the previous dessert place and the brunch-for-the-olds place before that. Hopefully, it will also be an improvement in terms of staying power as I liked it enough that I want it to stick around. That’s saying something in a city that already has so many sushi places. While my lemon twist roll didn’t actually provide much lemon flavor, it did offer some of the best spicy tuna I’ve ever had. I sensed a little bit of a wasabi kick although I’m not 100% sure. Summary: I like it twisted.

Apparently, there just aren’t enough sushi places in the area, so that’s why we need Twisted Sushi! Came here for dinner within a couple of weeks of their grand opening and I could still smell the newness of the paint, tables and chairs. Following the closure of JJ’s Place Bakery and Ice Cream, the remodel looked good. The folks here were friendly, and unlike many other neighboring establishments the customer service was solid. I went with the«Phoenix roll» which consisted of shrimp tempura, cucumber, eel, avocado, garlic sauce, eel sauce, and sriracha. To my delight it was fantastic! The rice to filling ratio was good and the flavors harmoniously worked together. The garlic sauce was a nice touch. All in all, in order to be competitive in this over-saturated sushi market, I would like to see Twisted Sushi offer some sort of «happy hour» discount on their rolls. I feel like their prices were slightly above average for this neighborhood.

It’s always nice to see a new sushi bat open up in the area, although this one has relocated from Al Pine, they are new to the area. I stopped in for dinner and ordered a number of items including a Sapporo for $ 4, Top mix sashimi with salmon and tuna at $ 15.95, Garlic Wings at $ 6.95, and a Salmon Skin Roll for $ 4.95. I also received a 20% off for liking them on Face Book. The sashimi arrived first. At $ 15.95, I thought the 7 pieces were not enough, but then again I am, I can put down a lot of sashimi. The Salmon had the best flavor. It was a New Zealand brand with a moderate amount of fatty lines which provided a very good flavor. The salmon had a silky smooth flavor and provided a rich flavor. The tuna was milder than I expected, probably because it was a little colder for some reason. It was quite good, but I would of rather had it closer to room temperature, to allow the meats natural oils packed with flavor to come out. The garlic chicken wings were great, and I hope to see these on the happy hour menu soon. The wings were fried in a great house made garlic batter. The batter was a light brown, very crunchy, and filled with a aggressive yet pleasant garlic flavor. The meat inside each wing was juicy and tender. Great wings and well priced at $ 6.95. The salmon skin roll was well worth the $ 4.95. The roll was very well made and tightly packed with all its ingredients, the way it should be. The salmon skin was very good and had that nice crunch and chewy texture, not to mention some great flavors. I like that they were bites size and easy to eat. I ate at the sushi bar and the sushi chef Maggy was terrific. She did a great job preparing my orders, was friendly, and provided great conversation. As of this review, they do not have Happy Hour in place, but it’s about two weeks away.
