Amazing Fantasy

I rarely come to Amazing Fantasy for my comics fix. Surprisingly, it even has back issues (Comic books from yesteryear). Who doesn’t love history? I do!

Amazing Fantasy is the best. Have been coming for many years. The owner Frank, knows comics and is a really nice and great guy. Even has treats for the customers that come with their dogs. Is a honest guy with high integrity, which is not always common in the comic book business. would highly recommend.

Brah, they had «Sweet Tooth» graphic novels. SOLD! Good place with cool stuffs. Garanz u gonna buy someting. Killahz!

We in San Francisco are lucky we have so many quality retailers to choose from. Picking just one to be «the best» is unfair since each one offers something that makes it part of a constellation of awesomeness. Amazing Fantasy is my neighborhood shop — I go there often since it’s so close to home, and everyone who works there is really nice. They ALWAYS offer to bag and board my purchases, and are knowledgeable about what’s new and what’s coming out. It is generally a shop where I go to purchase mainstream comics — it’s a bit light in the alt-​comics section, but then again there are other places for that. I have also recommended it to many friends, all of whom are now loyal customers of this store as a result. Overall, as I stated, we have so many great comic stores, and Amazing Fantasy has its place as part of the SF comics scene.

This has been my comic shop for almost 25 years. I used to go there when it was under a different management and then Frank bought it.
It’s a very welcoming and inclusive store. Frank is highly knowledgeable and one of the nicest guys around. He goes out of his way to help customers, if he doesn’t have it in store he does his best to locate it.
For me it feels like a home away from home.

A small shop with a surprisingly diverse selection, and great price points for all budgets and preferences. I like that no one pestered me, followed me around or fussed about me. I like to read my comics in peace.
Amazing Fantasy has the old favorites of Betty & Veronica, Archie, Jugghead, Batman, Superman, Bat Girl, The Justice League, etc. Along with Pisces, Will Eisner, Marjane Satrapi, and Craig Thompson’s ”Habibi”. There are vintage throwbacks, .25¢ & $ 1 boxes, obscure oldies like Atlas Comics ”Blazing Battle Tales, featuring Sgt. Hawk” from the 1950s, DC’s Ambush Bug from 1985, Valiant’s Turok Dinosaur Hunter, DC’s 1971 edition of ”The Forever People”, Marvel’s ”Conan The King”, Marvel’s Annual ”The Hero Killers”, Starslayer, Red Sonia, and hundreds more. Plus, some freebies, too, at the counter.
There are gifts, trinkets and other goodies found in between. But Amazing Fantasy does a great job at fitting a lot of stuff into the small space without being overwhelming or a daunting task of digging. There are boxes underneath the main displays — don’t miss them!
Amazing Fantasy says of itself, ”…there is no above-​it-​all clerk that treats you like the village idiot when you buy a favorite book that he doesn’t approve of.”
This is why I’ll be back.

A friendly, neighborhood comic book store in a city that doesn’t have many of either. I recently started collecting again and couldn’t have found a better place to start my nerd book reading again. :)

Really great shop. I always get good advice and good solid sincere service from these guys.

Best comic book store in town for serious geeks! Frank and his employees are amazing– well versed and very customer oriented. The hubby loves their shop.

This place is really cool. The staff is really helpful and the selection is good enough to make any nerd happy :).

Frank and his staff are the bomb. I really do think Frank embodies all the best qualities of old school superheroes, because he’s a real help-​old-​lady-​get-​cat-​out-​of-​tree kind of guy. The shop is well-​stocked and is a fun place to shop for toys and memorabilia as well.

Pretty good. I have become a bit spoiled because of the two great comic book shops on Santa Cruz. Very friendly service and it’s located in the inner sunset (very cool) which I enjoy.

Not a bad spot to hang out. On weekends you see a lot of neighborhood locals stopping in. Small selection but carry most of the main titles that you’re looking for. Inventory looks like it’s one of everything though they likely have backstock. I was introduced to Astonishing X-​Men by a shop in Piedmont and after finishing volume 1, I just «had» to have volume 2 to read that weekend. Ecstatic to hear that Amazing Fantasy had a copy so I took a quick trip over to fulfill my cravings. I wanted to try Y the Last Man also, however they were missing volume 1, but had Volumes 2,3,4. The nice thing about this place, though, is that if they will order a title for you if they don’t have it in stock. Staff is friendly. I’m glad to have a local comic book shop in the Sunset. It is one shop that helps to make this neighborhood so great :) They have something for everyone… kids, adults, marvel, graphic novels, t shirts etc

Oh, my geeky feelz.
Stumbled upon this place along Irving in the Inner Sunset. At first I didn’t even noticed it considering it’s pretty small but then I noticed a shelf full of comic books and I was sold.
There’s a variety of comics here, from DC comics, to Marvel, to other graphic novels. They also have figurines here, shirts, collectors items.

I wish I had gotten the worker’s name. He was über helpful. He had great recommendations for me and the hubs.
Overall this place is convenient if you can’t go to two cats or comic outpost. I love how old school this place is. Kudos to maintaining such good business for so long.

When I heard about Amazing Fantasy through a friend, he described it as his «marvel pornshop». I was thinking on Irving? That can’t be right. Jared D came to visit me from NY because he heard all about the Gotham City SF event. To be honest he was pretty jealous about it because he thought something like that was going to take place in NYC. Wrong!
We had lunch and then came here. It was his library of comics ranging from Marvel to DC and best of all; the Justice League and Batman series. I wasn’t too Marvel comics when I was growing up, but I read a fair amount of comics before the video game era took off. I just realized that there are some amazing graphic works out there by browsing around here. The guy behind the counter reminded me of a Clint Eastwood look alike but with a soft spoken voice. I gotta say this place is pretty cool since I found some old school Ninja Turtles comics here. SWEEET!!!
Will definitely come back to browse around some more when I have time. :)

Out of pure loyalty and nostalgia, I’m going to review this store by the legacy of it’s owner, Frank.
I remember when Frank worked at Comics & Comix, and in fact they had a location on this very block (quite possibly this very storefront) as well as one on Columbus in North Beach. Frank was always very kind to all of the neighborhood kids, so it’s great to see he went from being an employee to a business owner. He’s the type of local retail merchant every neighborhood should support.
The store is nice for it’s size, but as an infrequent visitor, I’ve noticed they could fill the void which SF comic shops are missing and maybe focus on more vintage golden, silver and bronze age comics as well as possibly even the niche of original artwork as well as try to get some in-​store signings by comic creators to separate ‘em from the pack and take that leap light years ahead of any other shops in the Bay Area.

A couple weeks ago I helped my buddy move, he was new to the neighborhood so we took some time to check out the shops and restaurants in the area. This is how I discovered Amazing Fantasy. My inner nerd knew instantly that the next chance I had, I would stop into the shop and pick up some books.
Last weekend I stopped by the shop to grab the latest AvX and try to find some old Cable or Transformers books. Overall, I wasn’t too impressed with the shop. Not much to offer as far as back issues goes which is big minus for me considering that I am always looking to fill holes in old titles I collect. Some of the back issues they did have looked a little beat up. It may be that I am spoiled, Comics Conspiracy is my regular shop and it has an abundance of back issues.
Other than the lack of back issues, there wasn’t too much in regards to toys or collectibles. I prefer Comic Outpost which isn’t too far from Amazing Fantasy.
Dude didn’t bag and board my books, really no conversation which was lame because I was the only one in the store.
I can understand why folks might like this place, cool neighborhood, some nice memorabilia etc. They have a large number of new titles and graphic novels but there are a lot of better shops in the Bay Area in my opinion. Next time I visit my buddy I will stop in again and re-​evaluate my review, maybe Amazing Fantasy deserves a second chance…

Great little comic store in the Inner Sunset. Even if you’re just browsing, you’ll be entertained by all the cool superhero paraphernalia on the walls.

Superman’s cape. Batman’s utility belt. Green Lantern’s lantern. Ever wish you can see what they look like in real life? Yeah, me too! Well, at Amazing Fantasy you can! Color me awe inspired. Every time I let the inner geek in me back out, I find myself at Amazing Fantasy. And every time I’m there, I always catch myself the first few seconds standing with my mouth wide open, staring up at that flowing red cape, or that yellow belt with who knows what’s inside, or that lantern that I’m sure would light up if only I had a power ring to charge. Mind you, these are not toys. No sir. These are actual life-​sized replicas. And if you prefer Avengers Mansion to the Hall of Justice, they also have items like Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield on display. I know, right!
Ok nerd, reel it back in a lil. So AF carries comic books, graphic novels, action figures, books, T-​shirts, cards, etc. Pretty much anything a good comic book store should have. And the fact that they’ve been around forever when several other comic book stores have come and gone must mean they’re doing something right. The store space is not as big as I’d like, so the majority of their stock is new items I’d say. The middle of the floor does have a substantial amount of back issues though. But the walls are covered with shelves that are almost overflowing with stock, so you’d be hard pressed to walk in here and not walk out with something cool in your geeky hands.
Every time I find myself on Irving, I make it a point to pop my head in. Although my wallet can’t really afford to support that old habit on a weekly basis, I will drop a penny or two on the occasional Walking Dead graphic novel or try to keep up with my Sheldon Cooper T-​shirt collection. Sure you can probably find a lot of stuff online, but where’s the fun in that??? And if you do make a trek out here, be sure to bring your parking karma cuz we all know parking out there can be a female dog. Excelsior!

Nice little unassuming comic shop. I had passed Amazing Fantasy multiple times before but I only realized it was a comic store when I was on the train with my sister going home (and it was her last day in the city, sniff).
We stopped in a few minutes before closing and, after perusing through a few other comic shops (plus several book shops), we finally found the comics we were looking for: Archie!
Amazing Fantasy has a wider selection of comics, although of course its main «genre» is action hero material. Still, we were more satisfied with the selection here than at Isotope.
Sure, Isotope had the lounge-​y feeling about it, but Amazing Fantasy got the job done in terms of a comic book store. They have a lot of back issues, so that’s a plus.
