Lovely atmosphere, lovely personnel, and lovely and special vegetarian food. Highly recommend.

Axum Café is home to some of the best Ethiopian food I’ve had. The Zighine(beef with tomatoes and onions) was great and you can’t go wrong with any of the super spicy veggie platters. The atmosphere was quiet and comfortable and the place was spotless. My waitress was fantastic and the prices are spot on by giving you a good meal without breaking the bank. I would certainly say it’s one of your better dining options around the Haight.

For me, Ethiopian is comfort food. Serve me a veggie platter and I’m incredibly happy. The food here is good, but sometimes it’s not hot enough. I’ve had all the veggie options(which I love) and chicken(good) and beef(a bit salty). My only complaint is that I sometimes question the cleanliness. I saw our waitress handle cash and then put more injera on our plate. As a self proclaimed germaphobe, that bothered me a bit.

Die hard non vegetarian but go nuts for their veg platter. Always over eat. orgasmic food. Family run business… sweet welcoming. I tried Ethiopian so many places in the bay area. but this is by far the best.

The food here is delicious. I love the vegetarian platter and the tibsie fish. The family who owns the restaurants is fun to talk to and really nice. Love this gem of the lower haight.

This was recommended by my Air BnB host. I went early and was the only customer at 5:15 pm. I had the vegetarian combo and it was fabulous. The jalapenos brought some heat, but it was not overpowering and still tasted good. The lentils were a bit runny, but the injera soaked it all up and tasted even better.

I love this place. This is a hidden gem in the lower haight area. The portions are generous and usually I have enough food for the next day, which still tastes amazing. The service is great. The must haves are the tsibe fish and any/all the veggie dishes.

I live around the corner from this place, so this is my go-to place for Ethiopian food. Definitely come with an appetite as it is a lot of food. I always get the veggie platter with an Ethiopian beer and it’s always very tasty. It’s a family establishment and the owner and waitstaff have always made me feel welcomed into their restaurant. Would recommend this place for a weekend lunch or dinner if you are in the neighborhood.

Fish(4 stars) and the spinach(3 stars) were good but the injera, which, to me, is one of the fundamental prerequisites of a good Ethiopian restaurant was bland and thick(1 star).

The service is a little slow(and we were rushing to game night at Gamescape after) but they’re nice. Get the fish, it’s good! —- FOOD —- Tibsie Fish: 4.5 stars Soft delicious fillet chunks and not too spicy. Hamli: 3.5 stars Spicy spinach, pretty standard. Injera: 3 stars I can’t speak to authenticity, but this injera is on the flatter side of the ones I’ve had and I prefer them thicker and springier.

Been going here for 17 years. My favorite Ethiopian restaurant in the Bay Area. The veggie combo plate is great!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. We live in the neighborhood and frequent 1 – 2 times per month. Family run with excellent food. Based on the owner’s rec a couple years ago we always order the tibsie fish and vary the veggie options. Delicious!

My first time trying Ethiopian food, and it was amazing! The owner is in the kitchen, and she comes out to make sure you are enjoying everything. The veggie combo is great. You have to try the lentils! Everything is fresh!

Really good Ethiopian food, with lots of vegetarian options. Great, warm service, makes you feel at home. We had vegetarian combo for two with just the right amount of kick. Deli! Highly recommended.

Sadly enough it took me almost three years to finally visit an Ethiopian restaurant since being here in San Francisco. Finally, my craving took hold and forced me to jump on Unilocal.I’m happy to announce that I struck gold on my first shot. Axum’s late hours of service provide that extra cushion of time to fulfill your appetite after a long day at work. The location is surrounded by plenty of nightlife for those who are looking for something to get into afterwards. Although the space is intimate, it does not interfere with still enjoying yourself as a group or couple. The staff is amazing and meeting the love behind the food is such a great touch too! Can’t wait to go back!

Nice local spot that gets your ethiopian fix. I wouldn’t say it’s the best in the city, but I would definitely go again because it’s convenient.

This is a small, casual place with good food. We got the vegetarian platter(recommended by a friend as the best dish there). It comes as one big plate of curry-like sauces, and everyone has a big piece of pancake-textured bread that you use to scoop up the sauces. Some were a little spicy, all of them were delicious. And the honey wine was really nice, too. The food came out quickly and the service was good. I would not recommend this restaurant, though, if you are looking for anything fancy. It’s not the type of place where there are all kinds of decorations everywhere. The aim of Axum’s café isn’t ambience, just food.

De-virginized a few Ethiopian newbies here, and like so many people’s first times, it was an okay-but-not-mind-blowing experience. We got the Alicha, Alicha Ater, Hamli, Kintishara and Tumtumo. The Alicha was probably the best. It’s not that there was anything really wrong with the rest, the Alicha was just the least bland. I think it says something that the most memorable part of our experience was not the food, but the milk + alcohol drinks we got to warm up. There’s better in the Bay Area. Give this one a pass unless you’re in the area and desperate for a hit of ras el hanout.

Five stars hands down. The price-to-food ratio is very good and i’ve never had a problem with the speed of food – even when they get packed, which happens a lot.
