It saddens me to see good businesses close, especially if they’ve managed to stay around for awhile and have a fairly positive Unilocal rating. Upon hearing that Galette 88 would be closing this summer, I bumped it up on my weekday to-eat list. In stopping for their Complete Galette for lunch today, it’s no wonder this place has gotten so popular and is well-liked. How can you say no to a buckwheat galette that has ham, cheese, and a soft-cooked egg? The galette itself is deceivingly heavy and filling despite it looking fairly thin, flat and innocent. I also recommend eating this right when it gets off the griddle. Having had my galette after the walk back to the office, you could tell I lost some of the magic by not eating it when it was super hot. Not a savoury galette fan? They have sweet crêpe options too! I’m glad I made it in here just before they close — their last official day is next Friday, September 4th. Hurry up and get there before it’s gone!

Hip décor + unique crepes = happy me. Galette is pretty tucked away in an alley way, but since it’s slightly hidden off of Kearny, you don’t necessarily get as large of an influx of people at lunch time, since you either need to have known about it beforehand or looked on Unilocal to really notice it, so luckily it wasn’t very busy when my friend and I showed up! We were the only people in the restaurant when we showed up(11:45AM), so the service was pretty quick. Got our food in less than 5 minutes! I really like their menu because it’s not as typical as other crêpe places — lots of cool choices with a variety of ingredients to choose from, but they also have a standard menu, for those who aren’t feeling as adventurous. We split 2 savory crepes, The Other Mushroom and Brie Hugger, and The Other Mushroom definitely reigned supreme. The hints of truffle definitely packed a lot of flavor — the Brie Hugger was also flavorful, but it just felt more like a normal sandwich but in crêpe form. One thing I really loved was the buckwheat dough! Super crispy and doesn’t get too soggy either despite the amount of ingredients. Will definitely be back when I’m in need of a crêpe fix!

Easily one of favorite crêpe places. Get the meathead with grilled chicken and add the egg. The place looks really nice and it is tucked away in an alley that almost makes you think you are headed the wrong way. I prolly would have never been here had a co worker not mentioned it to me. I usually get an extra order of their side salad because it’s really good. although this seems like a great place to sit down and eat, I usually just take it back. the presentation is really good that whenever I get this everyone is asking where it’s from. I also think it’s pretty cool that they are buckwheat crepes. I used to work right around the corner from this place, but now I’m further down and don’t come as often as I would like. If your in the area it’s definitely worth checking out.

I love this place. It is well hidden within an alleyway. Once you reach the end of the alley, you will find a magical black door that will lead yourself to this delicious creperie. The interior is chic with earthy tones and tree light decorations, while the ambiance is hipster with water served in mason jars accentuated with the huzzle and buzzle of SF FiDi. Galette is a form of open french crepes made with buckwheat flour and with a savory filling. They also have the dessert crepes for the ones who are craving for the nutella crepes. My friend and I both ordered«the other mushroom», which contains sautéed mushrooms, mozzarella & parmesan cheese, crème fraîche, caramelized onions, and truffle oil. It also comes with a small side of mixed green salad w/balsamic vinaigrette. Our galettes were so DELICIOUS! The dough was crispy while the filling had that umami flavor coming from the cheese, mushrooms, and balanced out by the sweetness from the carmelized onions. They did not skimp out on the mushrooms either, the portion was generous and the mushroom fangirl me was very satisfied. My friend and I both loved it so much! I’m a huge fan of this place and have paid it several visits since it first opened and every time I come out smiling. A great spot for a work lunch or a casual lunch date. Somehow something about this place being so secretive is like a cave full of gems on a deserted island waiting to be discovered… ;)

Galettes are crepes in translation! This spot is well hidden in an alley and the exterior is painted dark gray so it is easily missed. Once I entered this humble café, I was surprised on how nice it is. The industrial interior is lit up with charm and a good temporary getaway from the regular work flow of things happening for the day. You order at the counter and they serve it when it is ready. The crème fraiche is drizzled nicely on the galette. I ordered up the meathead and the sausages in that, had a hint of spiciness. They are generous with the given cheese on these savory galettes and it is filling for a meal. The salad tossed in vinaigrette dressing, balances the flavors out in the savory galette. Ultimately, the galette had too much cheese going on and not enough flavor. The buckwheat crêpe, itself, is a bit too dry for my liking. They offer sweet, dessert crepes and use a different batter for those delights. I’m coming back for those. It is a good lunch hideaway and they are only opened for the afternoons.

I can feel a new obsession starting. I’m already quite in love with crepes, but Galette 88 takes the cake. Or the crêpe? It’s truly amazing. Hidden away in a short alley, this creperie is surprising spacious. Usually creperies are quite small, but Galette 88 has really nailed the perfect organic buckwheat batter to open up a decent sized shop. The savory menu is vast. Each option sounded better than the next so I chose one of the specials, because I knew I’d be coming back to try the rest. I ordered one with goat cheese, chicken, arugula, onions, and pesto drizzled on top. It was perfection. Prices range from $ 9 – 13 and you’re getting a filling meal. Next time I can’t wait to indulge in a nutella crêpe.

Stop reading this and go there. Enough said. But you want more now, don’t you? Well fine then . The crêpe shell itself was delicious. The fillings were so well paired — the flavors go well together. For vegetarians — try the special cauliflower crêpe. If I had to criticize something I’d say I was a little disappointed in their drink choices. I would have liked to see more fruit juices or even more fruity drinks in general. I feel like that goes so well with a crêpe lunch… But hey they have alcohol, so I’m sure no one is complaining. Galette 88 isn’t the normal creperie you’d find in the states. If you’re imagining the light-colored crepes filled with sugar, chocolate, fruit and/or other sweet things, they have them here too, but what you really want to get here are their savory buckwheat crepes. Galette 88 is the first and only place I’ve had buckwheat crepes so I don’t have much to compare to, but in comparison to the savory crepes you’d find at places like Crepevine, these buckwheat crepes are darker and folded into a square with the fillings inside. The place is tucked at the end of the alley between Sushirrito and Pomodoro, and while it seems pretty spacious, seating is rather limited so it may be difficult finding a spot during prime lunch hour. They’re also only open for lunch from 11am — 2:30pm on weekdays, so if you don’t work in FiDi, you might have a hard time crossing this item off your 7×7 Things to Eat list(if that’s one of your life goals). I’ve always ordered my crepes to-go(note: the to-go orders don’t include the side salad unless you specifically ask for it). Take-out is fast and the crepes are warm and freshly made, but I’d recommend eating them as soon as possible because they cool pretty quickly and don’t taste as good cold. The savory buckwheat crepes are mostly around $ 9 — $ 12, and add-ons(egg, veggies, cheese, meat) range from $ 1.50 — $ 2. A little expensive given that they aren’t super filling, but still a good alternative if you’re tired of the normal FiDi salad/sandwich lunch. The sweet crepes(made with wheat flour) are cheaper, ranging from $ 5 — $ 8. ==================== #3CREPECOMPLETE($ 11) — 4⁄5 [emmentaler cheese, ham, soft-boiled egg] I found the ham to be a little too salty though and the cheese unfortunately doesn’t cool well, but I’m a sucker for perfectly gooey, soft-boiled eggs. I love poking open the egg, letting the yolk ooze out and cutting up the crêpe and dipping it in the yolk. #6LIKE A VEGAN — BUTNOT!($ 9) — 4.5÷5 [soft-boiled egg, ratatouille(eggplant, zucchini, squash, tomato, onion)] Again, who doesn’t love a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg?!? There may be no cheese on this crêpe(without an extra $ 2), but because it doesn’t have cheese, the crêpe still tastes good even after you’ve walked it all the way back to your office.

I came here with a bunch of co-workers last week for lunch. Before we got there, we were warned that it might be super busy. By the time we got there close to one, it was short wait in line which was nice. I was in the mood for some funky cheese so I ordered the Brie Hugger. I didn’t add the egg but I kinda wish I did! When I got it, the crêpe was super tasty. The filling was really rich and creamy. The crepes are buckwheat so, as it cooks, the crispy edges have a really unique nutty flavor. The shape of the crêpe was open face so definitely not finger food. Its more like a pie with a crêpe crust. I also definitely recommend eating your crêpe while its hot, as the crêpe cools, its less crispy. My only complaints are that they don’t have public wifi and that they close so early! Can’t come here for a quick dinner with friends!

I adore this hidden creperie! I stumbled in with some coworkers on a lunch break and I was extremely impressed. We spent minutes staring at the large menu on the wall, and when I finally chose the salmon crêpe(was debating between the mushroom or the Brie) I noticed another«specials» menu next to the right of the register. too many delicious sounding choices!!! But I stuck with my original plan and was very satisfied. The crêpe itself was done extremely well, not too thick, just right. The salmon was smoked to perfection and soft boiled egg and avocado topped it all off. I will absolutely be coming back here. The prices are reasonable, about $ 10 – 12 for a gourmet crêpe. There are many things in the city at that price point that aren’t as unique, so I highly recommend trying this place!

Crêpe perfection. My good friend from France has been raving about Galette 88 and let me tell you this girl knows her crepes. I was finally in the neighborhood on a weekday afternoon and knew that we had stop in for lunch. We had a hard time deciding what to order, so we decided to share the chicken first galette and beet salad swap goat cheese for feta. The galette and salad were both delicious. The galette was very rich, so it was perfect to share. The salad consisted of walnuts, oranges, beets, and goat cheese tossed in a light citrus dressing. The vibe of Galette 88 is also very nice. It’s tucked away on a side street, which is a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the financial district. At the moment they are only open for lunch Monday-Friday, but the staff told me that they are considering opening for happy hour at the end of the week(possibly Thursdays and Fridays). I would definitely come in for happy hour if they open for the evening. Galette 88 rocks!

You might get lost looking for this restaurant because it’s tucked in an alley way. But they have a sign outside to lead you to it! I love salmon in general so I always get the #7 Bruce’s Choice! It has smoked atlantic salmon, soft-cooked egg, roasted red onions, capers, lemon-chive crème fraiche. Simply delicious! Cute little lunch spot for catching up with friends!

Crepes aren’t necessarily my «go to» for lunch, but when someone else suggests it, am totally down. The folks at Galette are authentically French, no doubt about it. You could attempt to order en Francais, but their English is impeccable. You’ll be helped either way. Tons of galettes to choose from, sweet and savory. I love the ones with gooey cheese and ham. If there’s fruit in there somewhere, even better. Finding seating during prime lunch hours can be tricky. Just be patient and something will open up. A fancy(ish) lunch treat for sure.

My coworker brought me down an alley way, which I was sure led to nothing until we turned left and saw the awesomeness that is Galette. I love the ambiance here — trendy, simple, wood + iron combo — totally dig. It’s definitely a popular lunch spot, but the line moves quickly and the wait for your food isn’t bad either. I ordered… ok I forget the name, but it was the crêpe with smoked salmon. Taste was great, as was the presentation. Reasons for 3 stars: I think $ 11 for a crêpe is a bit steep, especially when you consider the ingredients; I also didn’t enjoy smelling like food for the rest of the day(hair, jacket, etc). I really dislike when this happens. Will I be back? Probably, but it won’t be my first choice.

7×7100 Things To Eat Before You Die 2013 Complete Crêpe w/Egg at Galette 88 Texture of crêpe was lovely, blend of ingredients worked well together and overall enjoyed the balance of the dish Execution was good and felt the portion was decent Only draw back is that once you are done you don’t feel«full» so might not be the best spot for lunch if you have a large appetite Overall Thoughts Will be back to try the sweet crepes, perhaps for dessert =)

Before coming here, I didn’t know what a galette was. A friend made sure I understand that this makes me an uncultured yankee with no appreciation for the finer foods of French cuisine. I ordered«The Chicken First,» mostly due to the name being appropriate. Grilled chicken, emmentaler, sauteed leeks, fresh spinach, lemon zest, crème fraîche, with a sunny side egg added for just a $ 1. If you haven’t had a galette(or crêpe) before, I would describe the breaded part as a thin, whole wheat pancake. I personally found it a bit plain on its own, but with the addition of the aforementioned ingredients I think its one of those dishes that only comes together when everything is eaten together. The prices are great for how classy the food looks and tastes, the interior is clean and a bit minimal with a rustic vibe. Service was very fast which was great for lunch. I’d probably go here with a friend who I needed to grab a quick lunch with, but wanted to show I was putting a bit of an effort in.

I like to think of galettes as part of my cultural inheritance, even though as far as I know I have no French blood, because my name is Brittany and galettes originated in the region of France called Brittany. What’s a galette? A galette is a thin buckwheat«pancake» that is served with savory fillings. Similar to a crêpe, but the darker buckwheat and«square» shape are key differences here. This place lives up to its name, serving delicious galettes with a variety of toppings. Get a savory galette and add an egg, then split a sweet crêpe with a friend if you still have room. The galettes seem small but actually do a decent job filling you up without making you over-full. This store is basically in an alley, but the atmosphere is surprisingly upscale yet relaxed. You pay at the counter to the right then grab a seat at one of the fancy wooden tables. They have self-serve water in mason jars, too, which adds to the vibe. Service is fast but friendly. This is a good place to go with a small group of coworkers when you’re sick of takeout.

Cute crêpe place in fidi for a quick, but still nice sit-down lunch. I came around 12:00 pm with my sister and there was a sizable line but it moved pretty quickly. We got a seat and got our orders in about 10 minutes. I ordered the #6 the other mushroom which came with sautéed mushrooms, parmesan cheese, crème fraîche, caramelized onions, truffle oil and I paid an extra dollar for an egg on top. The crêpe itself was pretty good. The flavors of the mushrooms with the runny egg were great, but I do feel like the whole crêpe overall was missing salt as well as flavor. I wish I could have just dumped hot sauce all over it. Additionally, the buckwheat is not for everyone. Being wheat, it’s a lot drier than if you got a regular crêpe and because the crêpe is so much bigger than the toppings and salad, it seems like it overpowers the taste of each bite. But, besides that, there are definitely some pros. The ambiance is cute, hip and fun. The line moves fast and you can be in and out pretty quickly. But the redeeming quality of the crêpe flavors /high prices is the agua fresca. The best $ 3 I ever spent on a delicious, fresh watermelon juice in a little mason jar. I could drink gallons of it! Verdict: A good place to try out. I might be back to try another one of their crepes to see if it does better on the flavor scale! Other tips: +Expect to pay around $ 12-$ 15 esp if you add an egg, drink/plus tax. +Ask for hot sauce +Don’t forget the Agua Fresca!

I tried this place twice, and I really wish I liked this place because it’s so close to work… but the savory crepes I had were just mediocre… So far I’ve had #1 basique with ham, #7 bruce’s choice, and the house red wine. The best way to eat your crêpe is to mix everything on top and then fold it in half… that way you get everything in your crêpe in a bite! WAIT… or maybe this is NOT the way to eat it because I didn’t really enjoy my crêpe… but it’s definitely the cleaner way to eat. Both savory crepes were okay, but I wouldn’t order them again. The house wine was pretty gooood; I would get that again. Chill place to come for lunch in fidi. Reasonable prices. Slightly hidden location. OH and don’t look at the menu hanging on the wall. The handwriting is kind of hard to read so you’ll end up staring at the wall for a long time. I recommend picking up a paper menu somewhere and looking at that instead.

From my exceptionally scientific experience, I’ve concluded that it’s hard to mess up a sweet crêpe*. Sure, some are prettier than others, but at the end of the day, even a terrible sweet crêpe is pretty dang delicious. But savory crepes, my friends, these are a completely different story. Without the sweet, mushy goodness to rely on, things like texture, density and flavor-balance play an important role. And at Galette 88, the savory crepes are the stars for good reason. You can choose from one of their recommended menu items, or choose your own adventure with ingredients like ham, chicken, pork sausage, salmon, a bevy of beautiful french cheeses, fresh seasonal veggies, and some curveballs like potatoes, browned apples, capers, crème fraîche, grilled jalapeños. It’s tough to go wrong. The interior is simple, sleek, urban-industrial, and straight off of a pinterest board. But it does get busy, so order online and pick it up if you’re in a rush. *These gallettes are not the crusty cakes you might have tried during your European semester abroad, but rather the thin buckwheat pancakes you’d be tempted to call a crêpe. So I will.
