I read so many other great Unilocal reviews about this place, so I wanted to give it a try. I seen only 5 stars, so this place looked quite promising. Unfortunately, I didn’t have as great of an experience as the other Unilocalers. When I first walked into the hair salon for my noon appointment, no one greeted me. I was sitting for at least 10 minutes when Gary finished cutting his customer’s hair. There was finally someone free, so I informed him I had an appointment for a hair cut. He looked like he was on his way out, and directed me to Agnes. She finally responded«in a few minutes.» I still wanted to give this place a chance. I thought the customer service wasn’t great, but maybe the haircut will be better. My hair is very heavy, so I wanted it thinned out. I wanted my bangs to blend in more with the hairstyle. I also wanted to maintain the length, as I want to grow it out. She did thin out my hair, but it looks and feels very heavy. It’s not the lightness I was hoping for. The bangs blend it a little more, but it still doesn’t look that great. My haircut doesn’t look or feel much different from coming to the salon. She did offer to fix my bangs if I wanted to come back. I’m not sure what all the other buzz is about, but I found my haircut to be pretty average. It is in a great location in Japanese town.

Gary is great. I’ve come to see him for hair coloring a few times. He’s kind of quirky and definitely funny, but more importantly, he’s done a good job coloring my hair. I was in a rush a couple of months ago and went to someone else outside of SF who was highly rated on Unilocal. That turned out to be a complete disaster and my roots ended up having a different color than the rest of my hair about a week after my visit to that salon. I mentioned this to Gary on the phone and he immediately recognized what went wrong and fixed the problem when I came in to see him. Thank goodness. Gary gives pretty good advice about how to care for my hair too, and he’s got decades of experience. To me, it’s quite important that the stylist respects the customer’s wishes and provides advice or recommendations accordingly. Gary definitely does that.

BESTBANGSINTHECITY! No… wait…BESTBANGSEVER! Need a cut, trim, color, whatever, etc. Only one name comes to mind… GARYTOM! My mom and sisters have been raving about Gary for awhile so I decided to check him out when I took a pilgrimage from the OC(Orange County). Note: I’m SUPER crazy picky about my bangs and if I’m not happy, the entire world will know… trust. Anyways, when I get a haircut, I usually ask for side swoop bangs and it usually comes out nice… that day… only because the person styles it. This does not happen with Gary. He does not hide imperfections with«styling» at the end of a session because… guess what… ITISPERFECT. He cut my bangs exactly the way I requested without having to explain it. And even after a few weeks, it still holds up and looks good. As for haircuts, he does my sisters hair really well. Layering does not look choppy and he makes their head a lot fuller(not saying that they’re bald… but they do have less hair than I do *chuckles*). OK, I’ll stop but my quick tip is GARYTOM = GREATBANGS! GREATCUTS! GREATCOCONUTS! Ok, there’s actually no coconuts, but he’s hilarious and he knows food. So if you want a human Unilocal person. go to Gary Tom. He’s legit and keeps it real… with food and your hair. I drive to SF just for this… and food! No lie.

For many years I refused to Unilocal my hairstylist. I’m still dreading this as I don’t always like to share my favorites and I’m afraid they’ll get too busy for me, but here goes… I might be average height and average looking, but. one thing I have is awesome hair! I used to get my hair done every Friday with Agnas. Now, I just maintain it twice a month or so and it looks PERFECT. I seriously adore Agnas! She is a perfectionist when it comes to color, bangs, and blunt cuts. I’ve been going to her for 4 years and I’ve never found the need or want for another stylist. I’ve changed my hairstyle 5 times in the past 3 years, and every time she’s cut it the way I’ve imagined it and colored it exactly right. She also gives good advice on new styles and cuts that suit your facial structure. If you’re looking for the best stylist there is, look no further! Just… don’t take my bi-monthly Friday slot.

I’m biased just a smidge because I have been going to Gary Tom at Hair In Design since I was 3 years old. But he really is amazing, and everyone whom I have referred to him has been very happy with the results. He is so knowledgeable and skilled, and does he tell a good story? Girlfriend, I think so. Gary did my hair and my mom’s hair for my wedding, and his coworker Agnes(in the same shop) did the hair for all of my bridesmaids as well as my mother-in-law and her sisters, and everyone looked fabulous! The shop is pretty well hidden in the basement of a medical building on Post Street, but these guys are a real gem.

My Korean friend, who has the most fabulous hair ALL the time goes here and finally let me in on this place and the wonders of Agnes. I first went to Agnes for my short haircut and for some bangs. That was super cute and grew out beautifully. Three days ago, I went in with a photo of the haircut I wanted and she delivered! I grew my hair out very close to my lower back, so I told her I only wanted to cut two inches off. She actually only cut two inches off. I mean how often does your hairdresser listen when you say cut off only two inches?! My bangs are totally cute and I’m going to go to her forever.
