This is on my running route. By the time I dash past Little Tree’s postage-stamp retail space on 22nd, I’m needing some inspirational, visionary outlook on life. Have never actually been inside, but even the glance rejuvenates. Today I saw a new show up — gingham curtains on the window, a bridge table inside. Under the sign in the window that says«Little Tree Gallery,» has now been added«Social Club.» Looks like where your Minnesotan grandmother might bring her fresh baked pies after Sunday service. How often do you see that in our jaded city?

I went to Little Tree as part of a gallery hopping evening with a friend. I’ve never done three galleries at one go, and it’s interesting to compare notes on the three galleries as each were different in atmosphere, mood, art tastes and attitudes. Little Tree was probably the friendliest place of the lot. It was the opening night for Chad Moore’s solo exhibit which was fun for the variety of mediums the artist works in: found material combined with other mixed media made into sculptures that were hanging from the ceiling, a large oil on canvas, and a couple of carbon pencil drawings. I loved the carbon pencil drawings, the various shades and nuanced feel of textures the artist created with a carbon pencil. And there is something macabre and compelling about stuffed teddy bears in various wacked out poses hanging from a ceiling and glued to other stuff such as Pez Dispensers, a Mr. Potato Head, small horns and antlers, bubble wrap(I love bubble wrap)…makes me wonder what happened to my childhood toys… did some artist find it and make it into something more bizarre than even my childhood self could invent? The owners are chatty, friendly, and genuine(how often have you combined those three adjectives when meeting people on the art scene?). I hope to be back for more openings.

let me start by saying that i don’t normally go to gallery openings or mingle in the art scene — people are usually too pretentious or the art is uninteresting. i appreciate good art and good people. both can be found at this gallery. the space is warm and inviting. the shows that i have been to have been unique and visually stimulating. all in all it’s a pretty amazing find and you should check it out! if you go to the openings on the first sat of the month you can get free drinks and nibbles and enjoy some great conversation with the other patrons as well. the owners are super nice and are willing to answer questions and discuss pieces with you.
