I had to write an update for this store because they are consistently offering helpful service, friendly smiles, decent prices — great experiences all around. Seriously, their smiles are infectious. On my last visit, they apologized for the expired cheese incident(see my previous review). They recently changed their food service to another more reputable company, AND they now check the packaging before restocking to ensure that there won’t be another expiration date problem. I thought it was really considerate of them to read their customer reviews and act upon them. This is why small businesses are the best!

There are plenty of liquor stores around the Mission, but few are open at 7 in the morning. Now don’t get me wrong — I didn’t come into Mr. Liquor this early to grab a drink. Rather, I needed to grab a Power Bar to serve as a meal replacement for my breakfast. Service was friendly, but $ 3 for a bar you can get at Safeway for .99 is a little much.

Super nice owners, and they label how much things cost. Most liquor stores surprise you with a high-value but in this case I could just easily go in and find out what I wanted and pay for it and know the exact amount of money.

Sketchy grocery store on Valencia The place is opened late, but far from great Bought a pack of Maltesers chocolate the other day. The cashier chuckled«this item is the best». Found out later when I started eating it, it tasted stale. Turns out, the chocolate is expired :( Dude, if you’re gonna sell expired food, at least don’t chuckle at the customers for being suckers. Not cool bro The bottle of Snapple also costed me $ 1.99, which is not a lot, but there’s another grocery store right down the block that charges $ 0.99. Not a big amount of money, but 2X the price is pretty shrewd. The cashers are also always constantly chain smoking outside the main door, and speaking on the phone. Overall a very unprofessional vibe. Methinks will not visit again.

Rarely do I find a need to leave a review for something like a corner store. But this place provides such a pleasant shopping experience continuously that I just had to share! Not only do they have the best prices around, especially for a corner store, they also have the best customer service! They are friendly and helpful but actually really go the extra mile. For example, today they gave me chocolates to go along with my $ 4 purchase, it was a little gesture but one that just put a smile on my face! Also, on Friday and Saturday nights, sometimes they even play music, dance, and just generally have a good time. It’s so great seeing people enjoying their work night that it makes me happy! We go out of our way to come to M&C/Thanasi’s market.

Walking by, you might think this is just some ordinary corner store. Wrong. The prices rival wholesale(I’ve seen Bulleit and Makers there for $ 20, unreal). Say hi to Moses, who is probably the friendliest and hardest working person I’ve ever met. If you pop in on a Friday/Saturday, there’s a good chance that there will be lasers and dance music blasting.

Happiness is… Discovering that the corner liquor store has Lindemans Peche Belgian Beer! Sadness is… Not getting carded. *sigh*

they sold me a case of Four Loko before the original product was changed. If that doesn’t warrant a 5 star review, I dont know what does.

Friendliest staff ever, decent beer selection, what more could you want in a corner bodega?

You will not find nicer people working in a corner store. These guys are always so friendly. Typical convenience store snack selection, but great range of beers and decent liquor selection with crazy low prices(nice scotches!) After the world series they were giving away candy and drinks, they love the neighborhood!

I’m gonna have to go against the grain here and say that I didn’t find much that I wanted here. I guess as a niche frequenter of «dirty liquor stores» and looking for certain items, I’m going on a different criteria. However the guy working that night was outside smoking and as I walked in he gave me the stink eye. Not sure why, just didn’t feel right. I looked and looked, saw nothing of interest and made my way out…

Conventional wisdom says that your corner store of choice is the one that’s closest to you. Conventional wisdom be damned! I happily walk past several other corner stores to enjoy the always-extra-friendly service at M & C(aka Thanasi’s) Market. They’re awesome. It’s definitely worth 5 stars and 4 blocks of extra walking.

I wondered whether I’m so attached to Thanasi’s just because it’s a block from my house, and am happy to see that I’m not irrational(or that everyone else on Unilocal is equally irrational). This place has great deals on beer, is open later than any other corner store in the area, and has a useful broad range of random stuff you might suddenly realise you need(toothpaste, crackers). Plus, the guys who work there are SONICE. They tease me all the time for looking underage(a welcome compliment when you’re well into your late 20s) and always give me a free mini-Reeses or fun size M&Ms when I come in. Love them!

Quite simply the best corner store on Earth. Some of their high end liquor prices are cheaper than BevMo(Don Julio in particular). They have great deals on beer(currently a 12 pack of Chang is $ 10) and they even do up to $ 100 cash back on ATM transactions. The guys here are friendly and they always have some bumpin’ dance music playing. This place is unbeatable if you need to make a quick liquor run.

Scenario: Picking up drinks on the way to Halloween. Then picking up some beer for a dinner cooking date. Price: Pretty darn good. $ 25 for the big square bottle of Jack. six-packs of beer are priced well and the variety is quite good for such a small market. Service: I’ve had no trouble with running credit cards and anyone trying to force me to use the ATM. The guy I’ve dealt with is almost too nice. He forced a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup on me for Halloween. I was so stuffed from El Farolito I tried to politely decline, but he was having none of it. Atmosphere: This place is tiny but it’s well-stocked and feels like a solid, locally run business. Location on 23rd and Valencia is perfect being near BART and a lot of housing. Only gripe is that this is the same corner as Buffalo Exchange where the drunk ass hobos like to hang out and cat call all the ladies going to yoga. Not that I’m not looking, just don’t make a scene fellas! As any place in the Mission goes, you get a ‘diverse’ crowd here. Parking is okay with the bus zone being out front if you can run in and out quickly or have your driver pull around the block and wait. Uniquity: The combination of price, location and friendly service make this place the bomb. I’ve been to J&J Liquor a couple times ’cause it’s close and M&C(Thanasi’s) blows it out of the water!

Cheap, good beer and wine. at a corner store. We’re not talking high-end, but $ 10+ wine can be found here — 2 bottles for $ 8. And your better beers that are $ 7-$ 9 a sixer at every other corner store are $ 6-$ 7 here. And its like a block from my pad.

Love this place! Right around the corner and open til 10pm… or maybe 11 or 12… but, damn i wish it were open ’til 2am. They’ve got a great selection, the best deals on beer and wine around.(2 decent bottles for $ 7.99, seriously, can’t beat that) The guys that work here are also pretty cool. The old dude dresses to the nines on daily basis and calls everyone«boss man.» They even let me get away one time $ 1 short cause i live in the hood. Good Karma, yo.

I know, I know… everyone says THEIR corner-store guy is the best. But I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a place like Thanasi’s. Say what’s up to the boys, catch up on my Jon Stewart, and get tips on much better booze for my buck. These guys are just genuinely good people. Isn’t that all one needs? Me and the old roomies owe many a fun night to the elixers and mixers purchased here. Everything you need to get drunk… not to mention everything you need to take care of that hangover in the morning.

M & C, you give me no choice. On you I’m spending the rest of my soundtrack budget for 2006 on a very expensive song. You deserve it. [SF/X; Careless Whisper by — oh snap, we didn’t have the cash for George Michael — who is it by? Marilyn McCoo?!? From Solid Gold? She did a cover? And there’s nobody else? Not even that Tamia chick… is still out of our price-range? Yeah, I know Bananarama did it too. Ask SONY if they’ll give us a deal on the instrumental by Wham as long as it has the unedited sax solo and backing vocals… done? Cool. Blow, saxman. Blow.] Fortunately for purposes of our soundtrack budget, M & C’s is home of The Six Dollar Six-Pack. And The Eleven Dollar Twelve Pack. And Two Bottles Wine, $ 7.99. All of them drinkable too. Not a spit– take in the bunch. What I am trying to build before your eyes here is one of the worlds most agreeable and pleasant corner stores ever. Family-owned, I called M & C Discount Center«Thanasi’s» forever. My old room-mate was a Talks To Everyone, very up on all of her neighborhood biz. She says, «You know it hasn’t been called Thanasi’s in years?». Me back, «The sign still says Thanasi’s». That was years ago and the sign STILL says Thanasi’s on the corner. Does this mean that the M & C family respected the neighborhood enough to leave up an old sign from a previous iteration that thrived when mens socks were worn with garters? I think it does. Bits of random Corner Store business: ~ The owner is a natty-hat wearing guy of Mediterranean descent. Mustachioed and clearly of the people, he has raised his heirs to address customers as «boss», in a friendly, non-classist way ~ He also keeps one or more African Gray Parrots here. My Mom is a Crazy Bird Lady, so shopping at M & C is like hanging with My Mom, only without all the gott-damn questions ~ They almost always have the TV tuned to Comedy Central here. Middle Easterners rocking the Stewart/Colbert block works on multiple levels ~ They used to sell discount porn from a box on the floor. I shouldn’t have to tell you why this is both wrong and hilarious. City livin’ ~ In case it’s illegal I have to say that the littlest, most minor M & C-er has never sold me beer or wine before. But I’d think it were cute if it just happened. Business, never personal ~ Only the limited hours(they close before 11 usually) of Not Thanasi’s take the shine off of the place. And yet it make this fine local business seem even more precious and rare. Agent J’s Law #43: If they carry Vernor’s Ginger Ale, it is probably a Five Star Corner Store. This store, whatever it is called, does not contradict stated rule.
