Mike’s Bikes

I’m sad I’m posting this because I love mike’s bikes. This review is for the service department. So I recently got my wheels stolen off of my bike, I had an extra set from my race bike but the cassette needed to be changed and plus I was overdue for a tune up, new chain, etc. I walked 15 blocks with my bike frame in 1 hand and my wheels in the other to mike’s bikes. The guy behind the counter looked at me like I had just assaulted a baby when I told him I did not have an appointment. Apparently they have a 2 week waiting period to do any kind of service on your bike. I was not allowed to leave my bike with them, that I would have to come back the day before my appointment and drop it off.
I called Pacific Bicycles right in front of the guy and they told me to stop by and drop it off. I got my bike back 5 days later for 50% less than what MB charges for a tune up.

I have bought two bikes from Mike’s Bikes and couldn’t be happier with their service. I more or less knew what I wanted, the sales person didn’t try a hard sell with things I wasn’t interested in, and my bike was ready quickly. I really like how my sales person (Adam, I think?) understood and respected my price limits, while also showing me a few things I might want to consider. He was super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have nothing but good things to say about Mike’s Bikes. They will always have my loyalty/​business.

Service staff are very rude. I called to make an inquiry and they immediately accused be of being a prank caller and hung up on me! I guess they were the ones that wanted to pull a prank. #notcool I will not shop there.

I just bought a Raleigh Detour 2015 electric bikes from Mike’s Bikes for a great price! My first test ride was in the SF location and it was a great experience. My sales guy Garrett Bradley did a wonderful job explaining the differences between the brands and styles of bikes and had sold me on the Raleigh Detour 2015. It was also fun test riding the bike in the surrounding area. It is sooooo… fast and fun!!! As that they didn’t have my size in stock and I want to buy it that weekend I ended up going to the San Rafael location to buy the bike. Also within a week I got my first flat I took it by and they took care of it nice and quick only charging me for the tube. I highly recommend Mike’s Bikes in SF and have made it my bike shop of choice.
Oh and not to mention the manager is a smoking hot woman to boot!!!

I started out going to Mike’s Bikes in Sacramento, and they were always super awesome. When I moved to San Francisco, I was a little worried that life in the big city would have led to a lack of care and humanity. I’m happy to say, they completely surpassed my wildest dreams of customer service.
Back in January I had an issue with a gift card that I hadn’t used for a long time and their system was having trouble pulling it up. Jessica (I believe that was her name) was able to take care of it with grace and care even though it was a complicated systematic issue (not her fault).
Then, more recently, I brought my bike in on short notice. I use my bike for commuting and couldn’t afford to leave it for more than a day. Josh took pity on me and said he’d give it a look. My chain and gear had randomly gotten gnarled up and he literally banged it back in to shape. If that wasn’t awesome enough, he then noticed that I had an unsafe issue with my handlebars and jumped into figuring out why they were wobbly. Turns out a friend had installed the handlebars in an unsafe manner and he helped me fix it right on he spot. At the end I was charged a reasonable fee and couldn’t have been more thankful, which is why I decided to write this review
I purchased my bike and their service plan a few years ago and it’s been the best investment ever. Mikes Bike’s is not jut a great shop, but a great part of the neighborhood. Everyone there treats you like a real person and knows their stuff.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff in a convenient location. Wide selection of mostly Specialized brand bicycles and accessories.

I ordered a bike rack from this Mike’s Bikes on-​line, with 2 day shipping. After a few days without communication of my order, I called Mike’s Bikes online sales number. After leaving messages or calling the store a week after placing my order I was able to get a hold of Gavin in on-​line sales. Gavin was very professional, but couldn’t keep his promises to investigate why the product wasn’t shipped and when I would receive the bike racks. 2 weeks after ordering I called Gavin again to get status. He said Mike’s Bikes could no longer sell Yakima products and therefore they couldn’t sell me the bike rack I had purchased online. They refunded my money, but only because I was doing their job for them.
I have serious doubts of their honesty and integrity, and believe they probably didn’t want to sell the bike rack because the web price was possibly an error, or they didn’t want to sell the rack at that price.
I also learned 2 day shipping only means you will get the product within 2 days of them shipping it to you. Meaning if Mike’s Bikes doesn’t have the product in stock (although the product may show in stock on the web) you could be waiting a long time.

Terrible service. Made a tune up reservation two weeks ahead of time, dropped it off the night before, and then was told then next day that they couldn’t get to it because they were too busy. Just no consideration from staff, don’t know how to honor reservations apparently.

Great service! I exchanged a bike without any difficulties today (from another store) and received service above and beyond expectations!
In a very busy shop, I received personalized service including how best to accessorize the bike (including installation); non-​hurried, professional, extremely pleasant — truly, they are rock stars!
I highly recommend this bike shop in San Francisco! You rock!

I have bought five bikes from Mikes SF and Sausalito stores in last five years (2 MTB, 2 Cross, and 1 road). Sales, service and fitting have been excellent.
The parts department is another story. Twice I have ordered wheels and it took much longer than promised. A real sh&$ show. Parts sent to wrong stores and told for weeks” be here in a few days”. Get your parts somewhere else. Otherwise this is a good shop.

I came here after I was on my way to work and found that my seat was stolen and my back wheel was messed up. I was really depressed but the great and quick service at Mikes Bike really lightened up my day! Also, they gave me great advice how to prevent that this will happen again and gave my bike an extra fine-​tune! Thanks guys :)!

I am not a regular Unilocal reviewer, so for me to be reviewing anything indicates that my experience was either exceptionally bad or exceptionally good. My experience with Mike’s Bikes was the latter. I had been shopping around for an ebike & nothing really rocked my boat until I tested out a couple of ebikes at Mike’s. They have the best selection around! This time I had a hard deciding on one bike, because both bikes were so awesome! Finally I narrowed it down to a Raleigh Miseo IE & Mike’s matched a lower online price! It didn’t stop there, Byron researched online for all the hard to find accessories I desired, found them all, going over & above great customer service & he then gave me an outstanding deal! Everyone I encountered at Mike’s was friendly, professional and helpful, with a special shout out to Byron! I LOVE my bike! I LOVE Mike’s Bike’s! I will definitely be doing more business with Mike’s Bikes!

In the city of San Francisco, walking into a bike shop if you don’t know much about bikes can be pretty intimidating. Luckily, Mikes Bikes hires friendly employees who are happy to help you figure out the best bike for you.
As a first time bike owner, their employees were super helpful in helping me find my first bike. They taught me what I needed to know when looking for a bike and didn’t mind when I told them I planned on competing elsewhere. Ultimately, after still shopping around I ended up purchasing my bike still at Mikes Bikes because they offered the best deal in town.

My bike had not been shifting properly for about 3 months. Mikes bikes was on my commute home and I decided to stop in to see if they can do something about it. After waiting for only about 2 or 3 minutes I was provided service by one of the managers. His name was Drew and he was quite friendly. He was able to identify the problem. After cleaning up the components he took it for a test ride all in about 10 minutes. I feel lucky that he looked at it. I don’t think everyone would have been able to identify the problem. He probably saved me about $ 60 to $ 100 buck for a new tire. Thanks for the friendly service I will definitely be back for any more of my bicycle needs.

THANK YOU Mike’s Bikes!!! After having my carbon bike get completely broken and totalled, Sam was my angel and made it so a negative experience turned into a much better and more beautiful new bike that I couldn’t be happier with! He was so incredibly helpful and kind, I felt like I could really trust him and will go back there for anything I need in the future (and send my friends too!). Excellent experience.

I stopped by yesterday to purchase a few things for my gf’s bike. Everyone is very helpful and professional. They told us what we need or what we don’t need without any pressure. And also, they fixed my bike free. I’ll definitely go there again.

It’s really important who you work with at each Mike’s Bikes. I’ve met great folks and I’ve met terrible folks who’ve gotten grease ALL over my bike as they tried to fix something /​sold me wrong parts, etc. That said…
Adam at the SF branch is amazing! He went the extra mile to help me track down my missing order (placed from the SJ branch) and had a great attitude about it even though I’m sure it was frustrating when we encountered different issues with the system. I could tell he had ample personal experience with bikes (surprisingly, not everyone at Mike’s Bike’s does…) and was able to offer helpful tips.
Highly recommend working with him!

I had been recommended by a friend to purchase a bike at Mike’s Bike and also have read so many great reviews about this place. But I am disappointed by the service I received.
I wanted to a purchase a bike online but read that if I wanted it to be delivered I would have to go to the store.
So I went to the store on Saturday and showed Sam a picture of the 2016 specialized crossroads bike. He was very nice and told me that if I picked up the bike from the sore It would be $ 100 cheaper. What a deal!!!
This was even better than I thought. He told me the bike would be ready on Tuesday because it needed to be shipped from their Berkeley store.
Come Tuesday, I went to the store to pick up my bike. Sam was there and he checked my receipt and went to the back to get the bike. He came back and told me there was good news and bad news.
He said the bad news is the bike is not here. And it wouldn’t be there until Monday. The good news is that they would give me a newer edition of the bike. A 2016 specialized crossroads bike.
I told him that I bought the 2016 specialized bike. He told me No, I had bought the 2015 bike and they were going to give me the 2016 bike. I didn’t argue anymore because I was already upset that I had cancelled plans to pick up the bike and I was not going to have it today.
I had called the store the next day to talk to the manager about my experience. I was connected to Sam. I told Sam that I was not happy because I had taken time out my schedule to pick the bike up and also why wasn’t I called if the bike didn’t show up?
He said that there is nothing he could do. It was the Berkeley’s store fault that they didn’t include it in the days shipment.
I had asked him if there was a way to have my bike sooner than Monday because it was almost a whole week later. He said that none of the stores have that bike and that they are receiving the bike from the factory.
I had asked if there was a way for the bike to be delivered to my house so I don’t have to travel all the way to the store. He told me unless I want to build it myself, I would have to pick up the bike from the store.
I had received a call on Tuesday that my bike was ready to be picked up. I came in today to pick up my bike. The bike looked great and the attendant was able to give me instructions on how to use my bike rack.
But the bike I was given wasn’t 2016 specialized crossroads bike as promised. It was the 2015 older version.
This type of customer service is ridiculous, especially from a manager. I believe that a respectable establishment would treat each customer with five star service and fulfill their promises.
I’m upset that this occurred. And I do not recommend this place to anyone.

I recently bought a bike from Mike’s Bikes and the experience was certainly unusual, but also very positive. Essentially, the bike I special ordered through Mike’s was from Santa Cruz, and when I ordered it, the specs on Santa Cruz’s website listed a higher-​end fork than what arrived at the shop a few weeks later. When I walk in to pick-​up the new bike and noticed the wrong fork Benny, who had sold me the bike in the first place pulls up the Santa Cruz website and we see that sometime between when I ordered the bike and when it arrived Santa Cruz had adjusted the specs to reflect the lower-​end fork which was currently sitting on my bike.
Instead of just saying ‘sorry man, nothing we can really do’ or simply allowing me to return it. The folks at Mike’s called up Santa Cruz, and explained to them what happened. It seems like at first Santa Cruz was a little reluctant, but after showing them screen shots they were able to get Santa Cruz to send the higher end fork and they installed on my new bike (no incremental costs).
Big thanks to Benny and Tamara; I really appreciate you guys dealing with SC on my behalf! And for the record, the bike is fantastic.

Best service ever.
We went here at 25 minutes before closing time with our burner beachcruiser bike. We couldnt get the seatpost out, and thought we could as well throw the bike in the garbage.
The guy that helped us didnt even look at us weird, with our trashy burnerbike. We thought they would yell at us for Bringing such a piece of Crap in, lol.
He worked on it RIGHT AWAY and he magically got the seatpost out! He helped us really good finding a new seatpost and gave us great advice about where to go and find bike stuff we needed. Craziest of all: he didnt charge us at all. Very friendly and sweet!

When I registered for the 2016 ALC, a cyclist friend suggested that I should go to Mike’s bikes as «those guys are great, just tell them what you will be doing and they’ll figure out the best bike for you»…he was not wrong.
For the first time since moving to the US over 3 years ago, I felt like I was in a shop where the salesperson was genuinely enthusiastic about what he was selling. Adam was an absolute star and could have easily oversold me but no, he took me through a number of bikes starting at the lower price range through to more expensive ones, talking about the differences and what those meant. Ultimately, the bike that he recommended most was the one that I selected… after talking with my cyclist friend who was in complete agreement.
I called back a couple of weeks after to buy accessories and despite it only being my second time in the shop, Adam came over to ask me about my experiences to date with the bike (not to try and encourage me to buy the most expensive of accessories). He even recommended group cycles that I could take part in for training.
Mike’s Bikes have gained themselves a customer and I’ll continue to use them for all my cycle needs.
From a pricing perspective, I don’t have a lot of info to compare but for what I have bought so far, these were within my range of expectations.
Finally, thank you also Mike’s Bikes for the ALC rider discounts given and the contribution to my ALC fundraising.

These guys were rude to me from the minute I walked in. I have a store credit of over $ 1,000 from a bike I returned about 3 years ago. I was told this credit was good indefinitely. So I show up to finally redeem my credit, only to find they have no record of it in their system. In fact, they have no purchase records whatsoever in their system, despite the fact that I’ve bought 3 bikes from them.
To try to track down the missing credit issue, I wondered if it could have been at their Berkeley store. Instead of helping me track it down, they said «you can call them». Ok. Well, at a store that actually knew what customer service was about, they would have picked up the phone and inquired themselves on my behalf.
Ok, fine. So I decided to at least find a bike I liked so I could redeem the credit later. I did find a bike with the help of a very helpful sales rep. They didn’t have it in stock, but they had one in San Rafael. So I asked if they could hold it for me. Then some other guy butts in (perhaps the manager) and says «we can’t hold a bike unless you pay full in cash». Well, I tried to explain that the missing store credit was THEIR issue, not mine. Nope, «no exceptions».
What a bunch of jerks. Once I get this store credit issue straightened out, I will never, ever spend a dime at this place.

Love the service here! They are very knowledge with a wide selection of beautiful, amazing bikes! On the other side of their shop is where they mechanics are and without making an appointment, they were able to see me and add brakes to my bike within an hour. Matt and this other staff (didn’t catch his name but he was there this last Sunday) helped me fixed my bike in the exact timeframe they said — so when I came back, it was already ready for me. For $ 30 to add my brakes and rewrap my handlebars, I must say, it is a deal! Will definitely return for other bike issues or wheN I want a new one ;)

Just stopped by to see if they could work on my bike today, and the repairman took it right away. 15 minutes later and all the weird clicking sounds were gone and my missing rear brakes were replaced. Awesome service. Thank you!

I wrecked last week while riding in the rain and ended up bending my dérailleur. The guys at MB were super helpful and bent it back for me, free of charge. They also pumped up my tires and answered a plethora of questions I had about my bike and tires. Whenever I’m in the area, I stop in to pump up my tires with their floor pump because I absolutely detest filling my road bike tires with my mini pump, and they’re always very friendly. Will definitely return if my bike needs further work!

The staff at Mike’s Bikes are amazing! They did a great job with a custom fitting for my new road bike. They have a very professional set up and make sure you feel comfortable before leaving. They also have a HUGE selection of bike products to pick from. Would recommend!

Fit is extremely important when buying a bike. The staff there barely looked at me, raised the bike seat, and sent me out for a spin. I took two bikes out and then when I came back the woman helping was no where in sight. Turns out she went out to lunch. There were other people around to help me but we waited for her to come back. This is likely because they are paid on commission.
I ended up leaving there more confused then when I walked in and definitely not ready to purchase a bike. I ended up checking out a different store (Roaring Mouse) because they carry the same brand snd I wanted to see if I would be more decisive after trying them when they are better fit to me.
The owner of Roaring Mouse was incredibly helpful and let me know that I had tried the bikes a size too large after properly measuring me. I ended up buying a bike from him and it was the same bike I had tried at Mike’s just in the right size and with the seat at the right height.
Long story short– they have great bikes but unless you know exactly the size and bike you are looking for their staff probably won’t be able to help you.

I am participating in AIDS/​LifeCycle 2015 next year and needed a new road bike to replace my 12 year old trail/​road hybrid.
Had a flawless experience with Benny (while purchasing the bike) and with Tamara (when picking up the bike and adding a few accessories).
Purchasing a new bike is like purchasing a new car. I never felt pressured or rushed, but yet the process moved along quickly and efficiently. They helped me find exactly what I needed without ever over-​selling and making me spend more than necessary.
AND Mike’s Bikes made a $ 100 contribution to AIDS/​LifeCycle in my name!

I was fortunate enough to receive a gift this past XMAS for a «Body Geometry Fitting» with Kelley Hale.
I have to admit I was skeptical that this would be very useful since I’ve been riding the same bike since 1996 and figured whatever «fit» issues exist I’ve long accustomed myself to them but what the heck it was a gift so why not give it a shot.
I couldn’t have been more wrong. This was a great service. Kelley spent a good deal of time with me to improve the fit via some new equipment and some adjustments to settings. My ride has greatly been improved.
I highly recommend doing it.

There’s no greater joy when you get your bike tuned up after a harsh winter. I have the policy deal for free tuneups for 5 years when i bought my bike here. The place isn’t the most convenient to get to but damn these guys are fast. And yes, shop open on weekends because people work and depend on their bikes to commute on the weekdays.
Every time I leave this place after a tuneup, my bike feels flawless and all the parts feel connected and synced once again. I’ll catch his name next time but, guy with long hair, tattooed with a cap backward, is the man to go to. Super chill, super friendly, definitely cares about the bikes he tunes up.

Mike’s Bikes (on Howard) has always treated me well. It was there that I bought my globe bike a couple years ago. During the process of buying it, they let me ride a few different bikes around the area to see which I liked best. I was almost set on buying one when one of the staff let me know about the globe model, which was actually on sale because it was last year’s model. They didn’t have it in stock, but offered to order it for me. I was pretty impressed that they didn’t try to sell me on the more expensive model that was in-​store.
Since then, I’ve come back for a variety of maintenance-​related service and usually get my bike serviced the same day or within 24 hours. This might seem like common sense service but I’ve been to other shops that needlessly hold onto your bike for days.
If I’m ever in the shop for a new bike, Mike’s will definitely be the place I check first.

Got into spinning and bought a pair of shoes here to increase the intensity of my workout.
I’m thinking about buying a bike since I’m spinning pretty religiously these days. Emma was extremely helpful in getting the ball rolling (same person who helped me pick a set of shoes).

Ok, to start things off, the last time I ever owned a bike was YEARS ago. So I’m practically starting all over again and have no idea what to look for. My boyfriend and co-​worker were giving me advice so with a little direction I started my bike search.
I ended up at Mike’s Bikes after being disappointed at another shop I visited earlier. First of all, this place is HUGE! There are two floors filled with bikes, they have helmets, gear and pretty much anything you can think of, they probably have it.
All of their employees were very welcoming and offered any help when I was looking around. Like I mentioned, I took some advice into consideration but honestly, I went off of looks. So after making my rounds, I fell in love with a Crème bike! To my knowledge, you can only find them exclusively at Mike’s Bikes. SCORE!
THANK YOU EMMA! She was willing to point me in the right direction and answered all of my questions. I don’t know about you other ladies, but I like a woman’s perspective especially when you’re making a big purchase.
SHOUTOUT TO SAM! YOU’RE THE BEST! At first they didn’t have the size/​model/​color I wanted, but Sam made sure I got dibs on the next one and I was able to pay for my bike ahead of time. I also got to test ride one of their other bikes to make sure that the sizing was right. Thank you for making sure that I was taken care of, I appreciate it more than you know!
