Just found out today that the business has closed, though it looks like it was something Mimi had planned previously. I’m sorry to see the placed closed. I enjoyed my visits here over the years.

*****June 25, 2013 — Last week in Business********** I’m so heartbroken that this is the last week Mimi’s restaurant will be in business. I grew up coming here at least 10x a year. Mimi is the nicest person that serves up the BEST Chinese food. She’s been a great friend to the family and her generosity will always be remembered. Please stop by this week to say goodbye.

I’m eating the roast 15 spice chicken right now. Soo goood but only on Tuesdays. The 4 layer soup with noodles, veggie, house made won tons and brisket are my fav. The soup comes in a 24oz container and is PERFECT for eating at your desk. I actually prefer the ToGo over the bowl in the restaurant. They also have excellent rice plate lunch specials from $ 6 – 7. The Chicken is $ 7, soups are $ 7 even though the sign in the back says $ 6.50. No Tax. Prices are as stated. Thanks Mimi and Nancy!!!

The door doesn’t stay closed. This affects your overall impression of the place when it’s cold out and you’ve been seated right next to the door. The trick, see, is you have to push it just past the point of even with the door frame. Like, a little bit outside and then it kind of jams back into place. And stays there until someone else comes. Or goes. So for about a minute, in other words. And then, they were out of noodles. And ribs. And yet they were still open for business. So long as you wanted the prawns in black bean sauce, basically. I tried the garlic chicken and regretted it. Prawns were definitely the way to go. Actually, the way to go was to just go elsewhere. They rushed us to order, they rushed us to eat. But we had to wait about a half an hour to get our food and we had to chase down two people to get water for the table. Never again.

New Hong Kong Menu has fairly good food for its price. It is slightly cheaper than the other restaurants on the main road(Grant St.), as it is located in a more secluded alleyway. We have known the owner for years and she always sits down and chats with us whenever we are here. I have encountered super friendly service every time! My family consists of only three people so we always order about three dishes. The portions are quite large, though slightly smaller than before. Though pretty much all the dishes are good, I would really recommend their fried chicken wings. Their chicken wings are comparable to San Tung wings in my opinion. Plus, there is no crazy wait like there always is over at San Tung. The owner told us this place will not be closing for the time-being, so for those of you who are fans like me, this is great!

News Bulletin: This Financial District favorite is set to close after 1÷31÷2013. A real estate friend told me that the building owner raised the rent and the business decided to close. Coincidentally, bumping into the owner while produce shopping in Chinatown, I confirmed that she has no future plans yet. Unlike the crazed following for that old-time place on Washington St. near Grant that hasn’t served good food for quite a while, this place will sadly be missed. They were mostly known for their wonton noodle soups and beef stew over rice. My personal favorite was their Dry Stir Fried Beef Rice Noodles with green chili peppers(Cantonese — Siu Jiu Gon Chow Ngow Ho). The owner would often throw in a dessert ranging from cold sweet soups to mango pudding for her frequent diners. Stop by here to say goodbye if you’ve dined here before or check it out for the first and possibly only time. Sad that many of my latest reviews are making me feel like the grim reaper. *** Update *** as of 3÷10÷13 The business is still open as the landlord granted them a stay until the next tenant is ready to take over. Stop here before it’s gone.

There is no better place to go for quick, cheap Chinese food for lunch! New Hong Kong has a really large menu(which is even larger for dinner) and the staff is really quick. They actually have a great westlake beef soup or braised short rib and everyday they have specials. Every meal comes with hot soup and tea to start, and ends with tapioca and/or fruit afterward! Tip — If you happen to be drinking at EZ5 across commercial st., they’ll even deliver your food so you don’t have to stop drinking and dancing!

I’m a little addicted to their black sesame dessert — it’s quite good. Had it Thursday night and just picked up an order to go, delicious and warm to the tummy. They are growing on me — last dinner of spicy pork sauce soup fun and the pan fried noodles w/3 kinds of shredded meat(bbq pork, pork and chicken) with bean sprouts and julienne onion, carrot and shitake mushroom were both good. Pretty sure we’ll be returning soon — have to try their red bean soup w/coconut milk and tapioca.

Had a craving for some warm wonton noodle soup and found a great deal. For $ 5 i brought a large container of egg noodles, bok choi, and 4 or 5 perfect little dumplings back to my desk. Service was fast and friendly and I even got a free banana thrown in as dessert! I’ll be the first to admit the interior is a bit dark, old and run down, but the food was tasty and authentic. For the price I will be coming back!

This place it a hard to find gem. It’s tucked away on a foot traffic only section of Commercial St. and you almost don’t notice it. The restaurant itself is not super well kept, but for me it totally adds to the whole experience. I’ve learned that some of the best Asian food in SFC comes in tiny/rundown/ghetto-esque packages. I want to be clear that I felt the place was very *CLEAN* but it just wants plush. It had a TV with antennas that had tinfoil wrapped around it. It was awesome. I felt like I made a total find by this place. More importantly… the food is GREAT!!! If you are there for lunch be sure to look at their lunch deals. I order a beef plate that was huge and came with soup, rice, and tea(and one other thing I can’t remember) for $ 6! Total deal around here. If you like Chinese and you work in the Financial, I suggest you go for sure.

Never really know what to expect when i grab takeout here… Since I work the PM shifts just a few blocks away, whenever i make a visit, this shop is always empty… First time, it was the highly recommended Rock Cod special. Fantastic! Came with big bowl of soup and sago desert, wow… $ 6.50 Second time, tried the Mongolian Beef over rice… horrible! The bowl of soup and cantaloupe dessert were alright though… $ 6.00 Tonight, Beef Stew over rice, delicious! Came with the bowl of soup, AND a Chiquita banana? $ 6.00 You see, no two visits are ever the same… I love this shop.

Ordered on the recommendation of a co-worker who’s been going here for years. Tried the house special chow mein. Sounds kinda boring, but with octopus, squid, shrimp, pork, chicken, scallions, mushrooms, and probably more, it’s a winner! $ 7 included the soup and dessert! I took my to go this time. Will be back to try more.

3.5 stars! FREE stuff and friendly service. I really want to give New Hong Kong Menu 4 stars, but the food just was just OK. Today, I went for lunch and ordered the BIG dumpling and wonton noodle soup(i’m not making up the name, that’s what it really says on the menu! or the New Hong Kong Menu I should say… har har har). It was a big bowl of soup noodles for only $ 6. Here’s a couple of things that i liked and disliked about this restaurant: Pros: 1. Free BIG bowl of house soup(it’s ilke a chinese slow cooked soup with meat bones and lotus roots) 2. Free mango tapioca dessert and banana(yes, we all got a banana too) 3. Friendly service from waitresses that actually smile! :)(what a nice surprise, since this IS Chinatown) 4. Cheap, fast, and close to work Cons: 1. The big dumpling in my soup had some sort of weird herb in it. it wasn’t nasty, but i didn’t really care for it either 2. I’ve had better wontons elsewhere, it was just ground pork with nothing else. Some of the other dishes looked really good, but i was craving soup noodles today. Next time i will go back and try a rice plate!

Went to New Hong Kong Menu on Commercial Street on Fri 11÷19÷10 — took another day off. It’s across the street from City View which I still haven’t tried yet. Everything is super cheap w/lots of food. FREE hot tea w/pot given FREE house soup in a big bowl My lunch special was: 4 wontons w/bok choy in soup — small wontons but nice enough, bok choy fine. Soup didn’t drink much of it. Then my entrée: Curry beef stew w/a side of rice. Rice was gummy, but the curry sauce was good, beef was ok. Then FREE dessert: every day it’s different, waitress told me. I got some kind of Chinese tapioca dessert Plus a banana. My total was $ 6 + .57c tax = $ 6.57 before tip. Credit cards taken. They have separate bathrooms on the upper level of the restaurant. Closed Sun

Wonderful restaurant for lunch, friendly and charismatic owner, and affordable/reasonable prices! Community oriented. Why I Love this Place: 1. $ 7.00 and under gets you soup, entrée, and dessert! 2. Friendly Service: a rarity at a Chinese joint 3. Fast and Efficient Service: You can expect your take outs done within 10 minutes and the food is served fast even when you sit down and dine in. 4. Community Friendly: The owner knows and supports the community and knows folks well. She even let groups post community related event posters outside of her unit. 5. You can hear yourself even during a busy lunch hour. There is ample space to sit and dine in. 6. Takes credit card. My Favs: Curry Chicken, Fish w/Black Bean Sauce I love their tapioca or mango dessert which comes free with the lunch order.

(See pic) CHEAP and delicious food! I have walked by this place numerous times and never knew it’s open because it has a gate outside and looking inside it’s a bit dark because the shop is further inside the gate. My best friend and I came here for some takeout. My best friend has been here many times and as we chatted with the owner and she talked about her talented son who plays excellent piano at the age of 12 at the City Hall and who also already teaches, that she served us the papaya soup while we were waiting. They have a variety of dishes and I got the Mongolian beef on rice and she gave me another big jar of soup(2 to 3 rice-bowl size and wih papaya) as well as a banana! All these were only 6 dollars!!! It was quite delicious as it had the Chinese«wok» style taste and in a family style. The place itself is of decent size but does not have much decoration and almost gives a hole in the wall feel. Probably why the price can stay decent. Because it’s off from the major Chinatown area it’s quiet on the weekend. I will definitely come back for lunch and bring my colleagues here too!

Cheap Chinese girl is ATITAGAIN. Coworker L is on the Kaiser 3-day diet( ) because she’s getting married in a few weeks. So, since I am always hungry(and always the instigator in the office — «who wants to go get froyo?!»), I decided to give L some moral support by also going on the diet, because this way, I can’t be eating in front of L’s face all the time. Coworker K joins in on the starvation fun. Since we all knew that Monday would be day 1 of our diet, we decided to eat on Friday like it was our last day on earth. So, as K and I walked past New Hong Kong Menu on our way to work in the morning, we decided that we would go there for lunch. We walked in and ordered won ton noodle soup for FOURDOLLARS. BIGBOWL. Bigger than Hon’s. The soup was delicious and flavorful(like an awesome pawesome chicken broth). The noodles were tender and soft. BUTTHEWONTONS. not as good as Hon’s. At least they gave us a bigger portion. Otherwise, NHKM would’ve gotten 5 shiny stars from me. All of us inhaled our food. Have you ever had a meal for 4 people be less than $ 20? BEATTHAT, FINANCIALDISTRICT. Once I’m off this diet(I can’t believe I’m dieting for fun. I don’t even have a scale so I have no idea if I’m even losing any poundage), I will be back to wreak more havoc on my wallet. OHWAIT, THATWON’T HAPPENBECAUSETHISFOODCOSTSLESSTHAN A BROWWAXING.

This is probably the fastest I have ever eaten in my whole entire life. This is probably the cheapest I have ever seen for a lunch menu. For a 4 course meal at 5.50 a pop… this is where you stretch your dollar, this is where you get the bang for the buck. This is probably not suited for non Asian clientele… This is down home Chinese style soul food. First course is a soup. It’s not bad. I can see why people would say this is bland. There is no substance. Just good soup. Second course is a wonton/bok choy soup. I have never seen a personal bowl filled with so much bok choys in my life. The wontons are Ok. It’s OK because this is what I am accustomed to. This is how I ate when I was younger. It’s not going to be the best wonton you have ever had but it does the trick. Third course was a chicken curry. It’s not comparable to any Japanese restaurant or even newer Chinese restaurants. It’s just average and good. Fourth course is a mango tapioca dessert. Not too sweet, it was served cold, and it was perfect. Free meal from my friend Le T. and I am a happy camper.

Holy Smokes! Their portions are HUGE! Texas size… Came here on a Wednesday afternoon, after the usual lunch crowd(at about 1PM). Got a seat immediately, and there were still many people lingering. But we knew we were the last of the diners. I ordered their combo, with Won Ton soup and veggies, and a curry beef stew. Comes with complimentary soup and dessert. Score! My friend ordered a dumpling noodle soup. With Veggies. Also came with soup and dessert. Ok, so for $ 5.50 listed price for my food, I expected small portions. I mean, seriously. I thought my bowl of won ton soup was going to be like, 2 won tons and one veggie. Nope. 4 won tons and I think half a pound of greens. Wow! The won tons were decent, but not amazing. The curry was… well, a little interesting. I DID like how it was spicy, but there were also pieces of chili or pepper or something in it so when I bit in the wrong food, I got a mouthful of spice! And the beef was over cooked(boo). My friend’s bowl came out a little later and it was HUGE! I still don’t believe she finished it. Insanity. But we didn’t know all her veggies cost extra(boo you for not telling us!). If you come here, come with a friend. Or expect to have leftovers for dinner. The food is decent, but don’t expect 5 star quality food. It’s cheap, its fast and its within walking distance from Chinatown, FiDi or North Beach. Our service was decent, but maybe its because we spoke Chinese to them…

It is a small operation so the service gets bad if they are shorthanded that day. Just went there on a Saturday, they open after 11am, I’d go only after 11:30 so they are more ready. Their soup of the day is fantastic! and good for your health. The fried chicken wings are to die for! Ordered Tomato Beef Chowmein and it was tasty except for the tomato, it was not quite ripe enough so we had a green tomato taste that came thru the tomato sauce. Beef part was fine. Just these 2 dishes was enough for the 2 of us and we took home 1⁄3 of the tomato beef chowmein with not one chicken wing left. My favorite in the past has been the blackbean sauce pork spareribs in a casserole over rice. But the chicken wings have taken over! This is more of a «not for tourist» place unless you know what you want to order or want the adventure. I have over waited for my lunch and was tempted to walk out too, but the food is good enough(for my tastes) to forgive them. So I’ll come back, my advice is to come early be the first to order or come late after 12:30 or 1PM when the crowds are less. Forgot to say the prices are a bargain!
