We had poached local black cod with Dungeness crab, pickled cabbage it was REALLY good! Melt-in-your-mouth tender fish with a flavorful broth and Prosecco Chicken liver mousse with a frisée salad and goat cheese and sorrel stuffed pasta with lime butter and chives. Trendy atmosphere, a little pricy.

Service is subpar. Food is mediocre. Expect to wait a long time to get your food order taken, and your food to be served. Drinks also took a long time to arrive. The overall service ruined the experience for me at this restaurant.

We were able to get a reservation at Range for Saturday because we were willing to eat at 5:30. Everything we had was good so we will be back. We started with the bread and butter which was a little pricey at $ 4. It was good, but most restaurants in this price range give you bread gratis. The two appetizers we shared were the asparagus with poached egg and the chicken liver mousse. Both were devoured. I loved the chicken liver mousse – light but rich, with just the right blend of seasonings. For entrees, we had the roast chicken, Cioppino, and the coffee rubbed pork shoulder with hominy and greens. All of the plates were a nice balanced blend of foods. The Cioppino reminded me of French mussels but the chunks of sun dried tomato might have been better in smaller pieces. The pork shoulder was the best entrée – meaty but the strong flavor was balanced by the hominy and greens. For dessert we shared the chocolate peanut butter mousse cake with salted caramel cream. I am allergic, but everyone else said it was wonderful. The restaurant gave us each a tiny dark chocolate truffle that was perfect at the end. We had drinks before going to Range so our meal did not seem outrageous, but you could easily spend over $ 100 per person here.

Sunday eve — early dinner — chill atmosphere, unhurried. Very good attentive service and delicious meals. Zucchini soup — subtle and fresh; scallop crudo — delish; halibut moist and flavorful in its own broth.

A mid-meal Unilocal is generally a poor representation of what any restaurant is capable of, but if you blow me away with a moist, perfectly cooked skate, I’m yours… forever. Order an aviation; Range does a mean classic cocktail. #illbeback

No complaints here for the meal overall. I don’t think anyone at the table went wrong but I wouldn’t come back to get the olive oil poached cod. However, the real standout was the desserts. We ordered every single one and they were all amazing and decadent.

I was excited to try upon arrival and I’m surprise myself for not really liking this place. Well first of all they charge for bread and butter. I was wondering why do they doing that, it has to be good. My friends and I did and the bread was cold and butter was hard. Shouldn’t have gotten bread. The hostess was nice. Sat us even when the party didn’t fully arrival. Lets start with the drinks — $ 14 *Strangelove — rum, pineapples and lime — Was really good. *Elegance In The Afternoon — vodka, prosecco, and lemon. It was a bit bitter for my taste. Maybe more lemon? Starters *steamed manila clams — I really like the taste of the clams, the clams was huge and the broth was very flavorful. If we had more bread, I could have used it for the broth. Haha! The thing i didn’t really like was that some clams had a bit of sand. Not all but some. That was not good. *whiskey and brown sugar glazed st. louis pork ribs — The ribs was good. The meat fell right off but also there was not much meat on the rib. BUMMER. Came with 3 pieces but added a 4th one because we are a party of 4. Entrees *roasted chicken — I think was the best entrée of the night. Good flavor and not dry. But this wasn’t the dish I order. *pan roasted new york strip steak — Me and another of my friend order this but it came with 3 small pieces. yeah it was way too small for a $ 40 dollar entrée. The dish was not bad but just not enough. Maybe more bread? LOL *coffee rubbed pork shoulder was okay. too sweet for my taste and didn’t taste the coffee on the rib. I don’t think im coming back but its nice to have Range marked off my list.

I live around this area and decided to give this place a try. Didn’t have a reservation and we are able to get a sit at the front. Don’t have too much selection on the menu, and I think they change their menu daily or weekly. I enjoy their foods and drinks. portion was decent, although I do eat a lot and did not get full even after 3 – 4 entries and appetizers, but it is a good portion for normal people. It is a little pricey in my opinion as it seems like this is just a regular dinner, not a place that I would consider it as fine dinning and the bill was about $ 160 for two people. I was a good experience but probably will not return often as regular dinner night but I would say it is a good place to a date night

Went back here for the first time in a year or so, and had nearly forgotten how delicious this place is. Such a solid meal, with excellent service. The poached halibut was amazing, as were the clams with sausage. Also, the best cab I’ve ever had by the glass! Will be back very soon.

What’s to love about Range? It’s not condescending, with a lot of knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly staff. It also doesn’t feel pretentious, compared to a lot of new-Mission restaurants. There’s a reason why so many people for such a long time has recommended this place. And it’s also on my to-recommend list. And, I think, it should be «whats not to love,» because that list is very short: · It can get very loud, so you’re better off at the back of the restaurant, as the voice-level and general sound-level is slightly dampened. · The wine can have a hefty markup.(I understand, restaurants make a significant portion of their income on wine, but 300% markup is a tad too much. But there are also some good, and well-priced options on the wine menu.) All in all, if you’re looking for a nice place for fancy dinner, this is pretty close to perfect.

Enjoyed lunch here and had great service. I didn’t know that it was restaurant week and although we didn’t have reservations, the wait wasn’t long. They also have a nice place, 5 star for the clean and nice place Guaranteed satisfying place.

Range is consistently good — it’s been around for a number of years; we’ve been here several times. Somehow I hadn’t Unilocaled it yet … my only quibble with them ever was re: service and it was on a busy crowded night. We joined a friend for dinner here, and were pleasantly surprised how good it still is. Cocktails are creative and well-balanced. The salads had just the right amount of dressing, and interesting combinations like bitter lettuce with pecans, Medjool dates and parmesan cheese. Gluten intolerance cheerfully accommodated, and overall gracious service.

Fantastic! I visited at the beginning of autumn, but still feel Range is worthy of an enthusiastic review. Quickly, in notes: — Comfortable, tucked-away booth seating for my party of three — Server was very kind and composed, and timed everything comfortably — Food was amazing! from immaculate presentation to complex, balanced flavors — Albacore confit with green gazpacho, avocado, cilantro, and endive: lovely texture — Charred Louisiana Gulf shrimp with white kimchee and pickled chilies: just the right bite — Goat cheese and sorrel stuffed pasta with lime butter and chives: so fantastic we ordered it three times(not kidding) I was disappointed the buckwheat profiteroles were not offered the night I went, but I’ll come back for them(or I could make them on my own: Colin Kull shared the recipe with the Chronicle)! We instead ordered and enjoyed the peach cobbler(sweetness of the filling and the texture of the crust were right on) alongside a chocolate peanut butter mousse with honeyed peanuts(traditional, but satisfying). Finished with a glass of 2012 Romano Moscato, and left happy. Looking forward to coming back.

Our night at range was fantastic! The setting is warm and comfortable. Every aspect from the service to presentation to flavor was really special. For starters, we split the goat cheese pasta. I had a bourbon cocktail that was sweet and savory as well, and both were lick the plate good. Then we couldn’t decide on an entrée, so we ordered the cod and the coffee rubbed pork shoulder and split them. I also had a bite of my other friend’s roasted chicken. All 3 were amazing! For dessert, we shared the peanut butter chocolate mousse cake with salted caramel crème fresh? Such a perfect treat! And then if that wasn’t enough, they offer you a dark chocolate truffle!!! Wowzers, we were all super impressed. Highly recommended :)

I was able to make a reservation for 10, 2 days before we stopped in for dinner so that was wonderful. The service was great here as one would expect from a nicer restaurant. We had a small business dinner here and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. I had the Kholsh beer they offered here and it was great! I love stella so this was a no brainer for me. Appetizers: Goat cheese raviolis, Clams, Bread All 3 were great, the portions are for individuals, but we shared amongst a few of us so it worked out. Goat cheese raviolis were probably the best of the 3, the clams followed with a nice broth, and the bread last. Entrée: Rib eye The steak was good, cooked how I wanted it(Medium). It came with potatoes and carrots, which were super good. There was a purée of the nettle which had a interesting flavor. Only critique I have is purely personal since I can’t eat a lot of horse radish due to the strong flavor. They put a tad bit much on mine so I only ate about half of it. Dessert: Goat Cheesecake with pomegranate sorbet This was definitely an interesting choice for us but it was enjoyable. It was definitely stronger than a normal cheesecake would taste because of the goat cheese. I would definitely come back next time. The ambience is nice, I’d bring a date here for a nice dinner that wouldn’t break my wallet.

This restaurant gets pretty packed, so I would recommend making reservations. I walked in and sat at the bar since the wait was much shorter. My boyfriend and I didn’t expect too much from this restaurant, but it definitely exceeded our expectations. The drinks and dinner menu change so I would suggest asking your server which plates he/she recommends. For my cocktail, I got the Little Prince which was amazing. You can really taste the different ingredients mixed together, while simultaneously masking the alcohol taste. I liked it so much that I stuck with that one drink for the whole night. For my entrée plate, I got the cod — one of the best cod dishes I’ve had yet. It was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of moisture. Just sat there chewing and thinking about how delicious this cod was and how it just melted in my mouth. It was served on top of a bed of mushrooms in a delicious oil sauce and with golden flakes of some type of food on top. I don’t have all the details of the dish, but that’s all you need to know. I’ll end with… we’ll be back again some time soon.

Thankfully, this place is delicious AND isn’t hard to make a rez. I made one easily on OPT which I can’t say was the case for the rest of SF. Every place seems to be so hard to get into. anyway. I came here with my man and another couple who recently moved out West. We enjoyed the low key ambiance and stelar food. I honestly felt Range did California cuisine better than Zuni Café did. We shared delicious sour dough bread and soft cultured butter(yumm), a seasonal salad with gem lettuce, apples, etc, and really awesome, soft goat cheese pasta. This place apparently has killer cocktails… but I wouldn’t know I kept it to Sonoma based Chards and Pinots. which were delish. My man had the Smoking Gun cocktail which was some kind of fancy Manhattan. For my main, I had the roasted chicken which was plentiful and well seared… came with yummy fennel sausage, peppers and cornbread. It felt like a full meal. Bf and his friend had the pork shoulder which he describe as very«porky» and apparently it was smothered in coffee but didn’t taste like it. He didn’t like the resto as much as I did not I’m not sure if that’s related to the dish or not. My female counterpart got the flounder or maybe it was cod? It was in a dutch oven like bowl and seemed very fresh. It would have been my go-to if not for the chicken(though our waitress. who was very helpful said most folks go for the chicken or pork). My man and I shared the goat cheese cake dessert which was perfectly tart and had a great sense of texture with huckleberry fruits and cookie dough(?) base. Something like that. Try this place. it’s underrated(esp with many of the other good places in the area. like Al’s Place. unrelated but it was nearly impossible to get a rez!) With two drinks a piece, and all that food– the dinner was expensive(a whopping $ 400 for all. yowza.)

Very disappointing experience because of the food even though taste was ok. I ordered the pan roasted rib-eye steak. Sounds like a stake right? What I got was 3 incredibly thin slices of beef. Maybe 4 ounces of meat in total. This wasn’t some magical japanese wagyu 4 ounces at $ 70/ounce kind of meat. In look, texture, and taste more like roast beef deli meat. For $ 38. It tasted good but dang, that was not rib-eye. Amazed to see a restaurant pull something like this. The waiter was super nice and took it off our bill. Other things: — bread was mediocre and it’s ridiculous they charge for it. If you’re going to charge for bread you need to do something more interesting with it. — No one came to ask how our meal was. A bus person set it down and rushed off, no one came back until long after we’d finished. Seems like maybe it used to be a better place? too bad.

Mediocre, at best. I wish I had done three things: 1) Sat closer to the front because the back was too damn loud. 2) Skipped the chili in the Bottle Rocket cocktail. 3) Ordered an appetizer. I had just the steak, thinking that was a big meal already, and I left hungry. This is one of those places, for me, where almost every menu item has an ingredient I could do without. It’s not made for my palette. The steak was decent as it was, but my meal was neither memorable nor big enough. The cocktail was kind of a fail due to the chili, which overpowered the drink.

Went here for dinner last night. Food was very good. In case you’re looking at the pictures that have been posted, you should know that the lighting in the restaurant doesn’t do the food justice. I definitely recommend the goat cheese pasta(light and buttery). The pork shoulder was also excellent(falls of the bone like a good pork shoulder should). And in case anyone is wondering about the albacore confit– the fish itself was not as special as it sounds, BUT the gazpacho made it outstanding. I would give this place 4 stars based on the food alone, but unfortunately I was very disappointed by the cocktails. The Strange Love was not at all balanced(all I could taste was the very sour pineapple juice). The Georgia Lee was the wrong use of absinthe, and the Gold Drive should’ve had more cynar. Again, the food was very good, but otherwise this place was a huge disappointment when I was expecting a reputable cocktail bar.

I was pretty excited about eating here before a show at the Chapel. The pics on Unilocal looked great and a 5 star review from the Unilocal legend Ed U meant great things were in store. It turns out Ed’s review was many years old and most of the pics were of entrees they don’t serve anymore. Certainly not Range’s fault. That said, charging $ 3 for bread and butter is a risky way to make a few bucks. First of all, the bread had better be amazing. It wasn’t. Secondly, it psychologically sets up the diner as an adversary. Like paying a cover charge to see an unknown band, the attitude goes from«this is going to be good» to «this had better be good.» It’s a subtle difference maybe but if it were me, I’d raise my prices 1.5% and give the damn bread away to keep everyone in the proper frame of mind. The by-the-glass wine list was thoughtful and I found a nice Pinot at a reasonable price. They also had some pretty cool looking signature cocktails. The smoked trout in the smoked trout salad did all it could to make this an amazing starter but the overly dressed greens fought back to make it just slightly above average. The deconstructed lasagne(vegetarian) dish really hit the mark and is highly recommended. The pork shoulder was very tasty and came across as a deconstructed pistole. I just had a taste of it but it was a great rustic interpretation. The service wasn’t quite what I’d call crisp but our server had a good attitude. It neither enhanced or detracted from the evening. We didn’t see any deserts we cared for but had what amounted to Mexican Irish coffees that were ok but at $ 12 each, we agreed it wasn’t the best money we spent all day. Perhaps with free bread, we wouldn’t have been so aware of the prices. I guess we’ll never know.

Really awesome spot for a delicious American fare. It feels very farm to table and has an excellent cocktail and wine menu as well. I had the Alley cocktail with gin. Very sweet and girly, but also very good. They have an amazing scotch cocktail as well. For appetizers, we ordered the ahi and the chicken mousse liver. Both were great. The mousse was strong, but spread lightly on a crostini… perfection. The ahi was served in a salad with beets and mandarins and I loved it. I had the roast chicken for my entrée and was very satisfied. It was a large portion and cooked perfectly. The trout and steak were also great. My mom had the pork butt which had some great flavor but was a bit too fatty. Not our favorite dish. I really liked our waitress and the service. The menu often changes so just ask your server what some of the best dishes are. Can’t wait to go back!

A while ago when I was visibly pregnant, I dined at Range and had a disappointing, pretty much forgettable experience. I did, however, remember at the end of the meal, as an apology for the previous mishaps(that I don’t remember, sorry), the waitress brought out a rum cake for me and my even more preggers friend. We politely thanked her and asked if the cake had been cooked with rum or soaked in rum after baking. She was confused and flabbergasted, but after we asked that question in several different ways, she went back to the kitchen and returned to report that the cake was soaked in rum after cooking. We again thanked her, but explained that we could not eat the cake since we were both pregnant. She took it back with an exasperated look, still not seeming to understand that pregnant people generally do not consume alcohol. Anyway, fast forward to 2015, girlfriends’ night out. One girlfriend suggested Range, and I thought enough time had passed to give it another chance. This time the service was top notch, though the busboy was a bit overeager to clear our plates and asked maybe a tad too often if we were done and ready for him to clear the table. But, hey, I’m not one to knock him for his diligence. But, onto the food, we shared the bread and butter($ 2 not complimentary), tasty steamed manila clams with sausage and garlic toast, and the brown sugar braised short ribs which were fork tender. We enjoyed all the appetizers. For my entrée, I had the pan seared strip loin with some I think, housemade, horseradish with chives. The horseradish was wow. I couldn’t get enough of it, so of course, when I used all that was put on my plate, I had to ask for more! I also note they had a nice selection of wines by the glass and craft cocktails. All in all, a much better experience the second time, but still not impressive enough for me to run to Range again until someone suggests it again, especially with a ~$ 70/person(includes tip) line on my credit card.

The range of this food wasn’t very vast. I had the chorizo appetizer(see picture) and I couldn’t believe it tasted so bad. I mean, I like chorizo out of the freezer aisle at the grocery store, yet I couldn’t stomach this chorizo. It was hard and tasteless. And don’t even get me started on the soggy garbanzo beans it came with. I rarely send dishes back but this time I had to. Our waiter was super rude and tried to charge me for it since it took 3 bites out of it. I argued that I was trying to not send the dish back and eat it, but couldn’t stomach it. Worst than baby food of whatever prisons get at Folsom State Prison. The goat cheesecake was also a let down. After an intense debate with our waiter he finally took my meal off the bill, but by this time I had enough of their crappy food and their crappy service. Put me on the range, I’d rather be shot than come back here.

Valencia Street in the Mission is by far my new favorite area of San Francisco. There is such a draw with quirky boutiques & a plethora of hip restaurants. I’d throw Range into the hip restaurant category. It’s a small(yet bustling) place that serves up unique twists on American cuisine. They also know how to make a cocktail & proves it with a good libation menu. Ambiance is dimly lit, either for romance or that chill sort of vibe — you decide. Service was prompt which is something every restaurant should strive for. Now the for the food. Our group started with the focaccia bread & butter. You can’t go wrong with bread. We all sort of wished they salted their butter, but the bread was good nonetheless. For my main I ordered the trout with Manila clams simply because I was intrigued by the miso butternut squash & bacon components. Trout had a nice crispy skin & was seasoned well. My friends each ordered dishes that looked beautiful. This restaurant sure knows how to make food look pretty. Really, there were no complaints on the main courses & everyone seemed happy. Being that we were there for a holiday dinner, I of course had a cocktail. Tis the season for booze! I had an Elegance in the Afternoon despite our evening dinner. It was a concoction of vodka, lemon juice, bitters, absinthe(always makes me think of Moulin Rouge), & champagne. It was so nice that I ordered it twice. We ended our dinner with a shared dessert which was a fancy chocolate mille-feuille. I believe it’s a take on a Napoleon. It was beautiful upon being served. It had a pear sorbet that was nice, but the pastry was so hard to break that it went flying off the plate, which we all laughed about. Sadly, it also tasted burnt. I hate to end a nice meal on a low note & luckily our server kindly took it off our bill. This made us jolly once again. Final thoughts, I’d dine here again.

Upon initial glance of the reviews for this place I was excited to try Range Restaurant after my friend had made reservations for a large group of 11 of us to dine here on a Friday evening. The restaurant was very accommodating in letting such a large group dine here and even giving my friend a phone call letting him know our table was ready and we could be seated earlier if we wanted to. We had heard great things about their cocktail list here so we ordered lots to try: We tried the Elegance in the Afternoon, the Little Prince, Harvest Moon, Strange Love, and my favorite was Elegance in the Afternoon! For dinner our group tried the following: Appetizers: Forono Beet with Arugula Salad, Persimmon Kale Salad, Celery Root and Apple Soup, Glazed Duck Wings Entrée: Our group ordered the Chicken, Steak, Duck Breast, Cod, and Squash The food was good, but it definitely did not blow me away. I enjoyed my duck breast and the cook on it was perfect. However the food was definitely overly salted like other reviews stated, which definitely made it hard for me to finish my meal and want to order dessert. The main issue I had with the overall meal was that they made an error in our order(which I understand is difficult with a large group), but considering that it took over an hour and a half to serve us between our appetizers and entrees, it was a huge disappointment as we didn’t even begin really eating until 10:30PM. And the fact that the server didn’t really try to remedy the fact that she put in the wrong order for one of the entrees. After splitting the check our overall meal came out to $ 60 – 70 per person, and honestly for the quality of the food and service it was not worth the price. Our group was really bummed out by the overall experience here at Range, and sadly I don’t believe we will be returning.

Great dinner spot! MUST-HAVES: Local squid w/chorizo appetizer, Hazelnut financier dessert. Specialty Cocktails: * Little Prince(no. 209 gin, smoked pear, cocchi americano, pistachio, gran glassico, lime. $ 12) — 4.5 stars Perfect for my light, refreshing taste in cocktails. Boozy enough but well-balanced. Made me tipsy but tasted great! * Smoking Gun(bulleit bourbon, dolin sweet vermouth, maraschino, bitters, scotch rinse. $ 13) — 4 stars Smoky, smooth. My bf really enjoyed it! Our drinks: Appetizers: * Forono beets w/pomegranate, wild arugula, fig leaf tahini & pickled ramp vinaigrette($ 13) — 4 stars pic: Tried a bite of my friend’s and enjoyed this. He loves beets & arugula so there really was no way for this to go wrong. The dressing was pretty sharp & pretty heavily coated, which made it more filling & flavorful than your average salad. * Local squid w/chorizo, dayri dates, mixed chicories & kohlrabi($ 15) — 4.5 stars pic: I’m allergic to squid & had to pick around that, but the chorizo itself was incredibly soft, sharp, & tasty, & the sauce around it was amazing. It had a hummus-like texture, was subtly sweet & savory, & just tasted great. * Caramelized sunchoke stuffed pasta w/melted brussels sprouts, cocoa & parmesan($ 18) — 3.5 stars pic: This tasted fantastic, but I could NOT get over that it was 6 tiny pieces of ravioli for $ 18! Taste-wise it’s 4.5 stars, the texture is al dente yet soft, the flavor is rich/buttery/amazing, but the cost was absolutely ridiculous. Entrees: * Olive oil poached flounder w/lemon cucumbers, glazed walla walla onions, chanterelles & red flame grapes($ 26) — 3.5 stars pic: Had a bite of this & liked the flavors, but I thought the flounder was a bit tough. * Pan seared bavette steak w/crispy new potatoes, spiced butter beans, gwen avocado & tomatillo romesco($ 29) — 4 stars pic: Very nice, they recommend medium-rare & the texture was great. The avocado was kind of odd as it was cold & not really flavored. Everything else in the dish worked really well, though! * Duck breast w/maple braised quince, tendersweet cabbage, charred jujubes & pecans($ 27) — 4 stars pic: Very autumnal flavors. I wasn’t a huge fan of the cabbage, which was mostly soggy & not too flavorful. Underneath it were these extra dark chunks of duck, kind of like a pulled pork texture, that came out super juicy. The candied pecans were great, the quince was a little too juicy & sweet but balances well w/other components of the dish if you have it together in one bite. DESSERTS: * Hazelnut financier w/poached quince, spiced farmer’s cheese & sherry granita($ 9) — 4.5 stars pic: The winner of the desserts. It was like fancy s’mores, the granita added a lighter more refreshing component to what would otherwise be a very sweet/heavy dessert. The crackers were dark and intense, the filling fluffy & sweet, & the crispy nibs great. I loved this one! * Ginger molasses cake w/candied pumpkin seeds & roasted squash ice cream($ 9) — 4 stars pic: I liked that the cake wasn’t overly sweet, but it had almost too much of a burnt, molasses-like flavor. The ice cream, which was sorbet-like & light in texture, went well but melted too quickly. The flavors worked together really well! Autumnal like the duck. * Berkshire cheese ‘berkshire blue’: raw cow’s milk cheese w/honeycomb & toasted brioche($ 8) — 4 stars pic: The brioche was a little to crisp & dry. I loved the thick honeycomb. You end up with extra cheese at the end though!
