Red Bull Flugtag

By far one of the better group events in SF.
Send a friend early with a tarp — check
coordinate 20 friends to «occupy» your own plot of grassy knoll — check
Wear wigs and costumes that had people asking «which team are you on?» — check
Drag three coolers from the 3^rd street bridge without dislocating a shoulder? — check
Tips: there are many red bull girls giving out free mixers outside the event and across king, but not near it. if your plan was to bring vodka and get the red bull for free, I hope you enjoy your glass of pure vodka. I know we did… from what I remember; also, food is good but the lines were long. bring your own just in case.

Can you stumble into an event like this? We did and it was a blast. AT&T park and the city of SF did a great job with this. Sat in the outfield and watched it on the big screen. This is essentially a bunch of bad parade floats getting pushed into the water. But, it is very entertaining.

Crash and burn. crash and burn baby. Yeah you know you love watching the floats fly off the cliff. So did all the unexpected thousands of people who walked around ATT park and actually got to sit on the field while eating their garlic fries and watching the big screen. There were just a lot of people out there-​families, non families, non-​people (pets) – everyone one was out and about. Lots of different themes from a Jack in the box taco flying contraption, to a Day of the dead float complete with a floating brain pre-​show before its take off. I so wish there was free Redbull though. I needed some wings.

Several groups with their own flying device ready to take off. Each group, on a platform in the middle of McCovey Cove, 30 second routine, and then their hand-​made «air» craft — usually they nose dive. Event opens at 11AM, starts at 1pm, and ends around 3:30PM. if you aren’t there early, good luck trying to get a view. However, in the AT&T parking log there are massive screen tvs and food booths and porta-​potties. Also half of the Lefty O’Doul Bridge is closed off for you to get a space and watch.
BEST PART… the AT&T stadium opens up. You can go near standing-​room and watch. Or you can sit on the field or in the bottom-​level seats and watch it on the big screen.
Will I be back? Next yr my friends and I want to be actually participate in the event.

This was quite the event to go to. Especially since it was at AT&T park this year. The basic idea of the event is groups of people building random floats and flying off a large ramp hoping to gain some distances. The winner is determined by the longest distance off the ramp.
Overall, since it was at McCovey Cove (GO GIANTS!), AT&T park was open for everyone to go inside to watch the event on the big screen. The other great part is that the concessions are opened for food and drinks. We went around 1(when the event started) and it was somewhat packed already. If you want a view right off the side of the park, I recommend going at least an hour before. If you don’t mind sitting in the stadium or on the field, then you’ll be fine going anytime.

Love watching people crash! Some of the skits weren’t the greatest, and some were too seriously choreographed. Kudos to those teams that jump into the water after the flugtag falls in. Shame shame on those who just walked off.
This is a great event and had prime viewing over by ATT park. Loved tha tit was open for all to see!

This was my first Red Bull Flugtag and I had a blast!
The atmosphere was festive around McCovey Cove and I was blown away with how many people showed up for an event that involved building homemade aircraft with hopes that they could fly. I liked how they made use of the surrounding areas with spectators watching from At&t Park, Lefty O’Doul Bridge, and the At&t Park parking lot which was used as the hangar\food\entertainment area.
Unfortunately, no records were broken this year. But I did see some very creative aircraft. Let’s see, there was a shark, Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, a flying Winnebago, hot sauce bottle with wings, a flying banana, and my personal favorite, an R. Kelly hang glider complete with «I Believe I Can Fly» music. The crashes were worth sticking around for though. It was all fun just to see how far some of these teams would go. Granted, a good majority of them were really meant for show and weren’t obviously going to go far, but you’d never know that there’d be a chance that they’d take off and fly.
The food area at the parking lot was really good. They had a good variety of food vendors and food trucks like Gerard’s Paella, Seoul On Wheels, and Hapa SF. All of them were selling Red Bull of course. And there was a whole separate area that was created for the beer garden if you wanted to get your drink on while the event was going on.
When the next Red Bull Flugtag comes around, I hope they do it again at McCovey Cove. It was really a fun event!

You should go to this event at least once. Where else are you going to see people in outrageous costumes push the equivalent of home made floats off a runway into the water and see if any fly? Most of the teams were creative with their costumes, decorations and planes.
McCovey gets very crowded, if you are not there very early, just give up and sit in AT&T park is my advice. The Jumbo tron has a nice view of the action, and if you can’t see why are you here?
It does get a bit repetitive after a while, and yes there are a lot of people. However, it is live and unique, not just another festival or show.
Worth going at least once? Yes
Worth going more often? Only if you are the kind of person who really loves this event.

This is another one of my favorite local events.
When there’s great weather. .. its just fun to watch and see what all the nutty people have come up with.
Great way to enjoy an afternoon.

I’ve been. A bunch of drunks jumping into the water and throwing lots of crappy junk into the bay. It’s funny for about 10 minutes if you don’t mind crowds. How much of the crap that they throw into the water do they actually take out. I know when their stupid costumes and contraptions fall to pieces some of it must end up in the water. If you want to watch a guy in a crappy homemade Pac Man costume jump into the water while wearing the costume, or if you want to watch someone jump into the water while holding onto a huge fake airplane, then this is the place for you. People don’t call it Red Bull Fucktards for nothing though.

An institution that speaks for itself… can’t wait for the next one.
