Boss of the Sauce is a great little contest to find the best pasta sauce in the Bay Area. This year, only 16 restaurants/​catering businesses entered, so I think it was smaller than last year. I was not one of the first 100 people, so I didn’t get to judge, but that was fine. I got there at about 12:30, before the start of the contest, and contestants were already handing out their sauces for tasting!
In order to get through the tasting as quickly as possible, my friend and I grabbed a plate (very helpful! If you don’t get one, you can only hold 2 cups of sauce with each trip!) and grabbed as many sauce cups as we could carry (about 6 per trip, per person). We split the sauce cups, but even with that, by the time we had tasted all the sauces and eaten bread, pesto pasta, salami, meatballs and biscotti, we were stuffed! There probably wasn’t enough bottled water being passed around the event, but there was plenty of beer and wine being served!
So we left and as we took the bus back home, I think the bread expanded in our stomachs. I had the most massive food coma ever as I continued to feel more full as the hour after I left the contest passed. Luckily, that was cured with a good cup of coffee.
Thanks to Ruggy J and Unilocal for getting us in free! I don’t think this is a great event to bring the kids to. There aren’t really any kid friendly activities, so don’t bring them unless they can really appreciate the sauce!

Thanks to Unilocal,I was able to score a pair of free tickets to Boss of the Sauce. To prepare myself, I read some Unilocal reviews from last year’s event. A bit of confusion with the tickets at first, but Jessica arrived just in time to check us all in. The bf and I were also one of the 1^st round judges. Very exciting.
Prior to tasting, we walked around and visited the booths. There were people offering sweets, cappucino, pasta (so good!), wine, beer, bread dipped in olive oil, etc. Being a judge is a great way to enjoy the event. There are tables prepared with bread baskets and red/​white checkered table cloth. Each table is assigned a server, and they bring you the sauces one by one to taste and score. Our server was super friendly and very quick to bring us the next round.
There were a couple of people at our table who were really cool, and we had some good conversations going. No love to the one pair that tried to dictate everyone else’s vote at the table. I can trust my own taste buds, thanks.
It was great to see how many variations there were, and I definitely got ideas on how I can amp up my own sauce next time I cook at home. Both the bf and I chose the same favorite (Zuppa’s). Hopefully they can come back next year to win back their title!
I was so stuffed by the time I left that I even had to pass up gelato in North Beach. I didn’t think it was possible to get full off of sauce… and I didn’t even eat much bread! For people who come next year, I would recommend getting there early enough to be a judge.

I wanted to go to this last year, but instead I went to my childhood friend’s wedding in Chicago. So this year, when I saw it was coming up again I thought «oh cool.» It helped that a friend of mine requested extra tickets through Unilocal,and I was able to ride in on her coattails.
Anyway, I got there early enough to be a judge. I think this was a blessing and a curse. The blessing was I was served. The curse was I had to actually make up my mind about things. I think that I’m not the best person to be a judge at something like this because I like to know my choices before I make a decision. So I was perfectly willing to mark down a sauce for not being good, but I struggled to rate anything more than a 3 (out of 1 – 5) and 5 points just didn’t happen, although I did have a favorite sauce in the end. And I’m not sure which sauce it was and I will never know, so I guess I need to go try a bunch of restaurants! I also didn’t get to try the pasta with the rabbit sauce because the line was too long and besides I was rather full on sauce and delicious bread.
Oh, and the specialty cocktail that they had there was very delicious. I think if I had to make overall vote for best in show, that’s my pick!
Finally, what the heck was Wired magazine doing there as an entry? Does anyone have the skinny on this? Please let me know if so!

It would have been cool to be one of the judges, but we were quite late.
We saw Jessica T at the Unilocal table and later on ran into Tinna H and Connie C in line.
It was interesting with all the tables lining the walls with various dishes to try: from bread for oil/​vinegar dips, salami and bread, garlic artichoke sausages, pasta dishes, etc. I think out of all that, my favorite was the sweet potato ravioli. That was delish! The Sicilian appetizer was pretty good too. I think there was probably more variety, but we got there too late and it was all gone.
On to the main event: The Sauce cook-​off! Along the front of the room was 18 different pots of pasta sauces vying for the win. When it came to public tasting time, we tried to try most of them. Some were really good, some were really bad, and some were just bland. One smelled and tasted burnt. Another tasted HOT (temperature wise) and burnt our mouths. The elk pasta sauce was pretty good. There was one that didn’t seem like a pasta sauce, it looked and tasted more like marinated (stewed?) beef. The basic tomato marinara with a spicy kick was pretty good too. My fav was the one from the restaurant from like ½ block away.
The side room was the beverage room. Wine, beer, and water.
What a neat way to have a fundraiser. I would have given the event 5 stars, but I knocked off a star because I didn’t see any way to get bread [to dip into the sauce] if you weren’t at a judging table. Seriously, drinking sauce isn’t fun nor easy. It was also very hot and stuffy in there.

My plus one, Eric S. and I had a great time over at the Boss of Sauce yesterday. It was our first year going and we enjoyed the entire time! Now, there are so many great reviews on here that I wanted to take a moment and address some of the earlier doubts and concerns voiced by Unilocalers before the event before I went into full on love fest…
1) Political issue with political issues. I know that a few fellow Unilocalers were concerned that St. Paul and Peter’s Event Center was going to be leaning toward the Yes on Prop. 8 question. While it was addressed that this is a catholic space, I felt very comfortable there and didn’t feel like political issues were discussed at all. I saw some No on Prop. 8 stickers and shirts and didn’t see anyone having any problems. Seemed like the whole group was pretty fun loving and more interested in sauce than politics.
2) Vegan/​Vegetarian friendliness. If you’re a strict veg-​head then this is more than likely not the event for you. First off, the tastings are ingredient blind, which means that you don’t really know if there is or isn’t meat, however I am relatively sure that there was meat in most of them. Now, while there are those that may argue that you can’t have real sauce without meat, we tasted an out of this world vegan sauce from Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack. Everyone should definitely check them out, from what I understand the sauce is a regular on their menu! While they may not have won any awards, they certainly convinced me that a sauce can be great, and vegan!
Okay, back to a (brief) lovefest. Thank you so much to Unilocal for cluing us in on this event and thank you so much to the great Fieri volunteers and organizers who brought it all together. We had a wonderful time being judges and meeting other people interested in great food. All of the generosity and love really moved us and I hope that everyone realizes how special of an event they managed to put together.
Also, I so think that Tarintino’s was robbed. That sauce was, without question, the boss-​est. * We’ll be back to cheer everyone on next year!

Had a good time at Boss of the Sauce 2008. Although, now that I know how to approach it, I may do it differently next year.
We got there right at 12, so that may have been our first mistake. When we got the program and it said first round judging didn’t even start until 1:00, we were a little perplexed on what to do for an hour. Once you’ve seen the vendors, you just kind of poke around, drink some alcohol and wonder what time it is.
However, about 12:30, people started lining up at the sauces and samples were being handed out — so that saved the day. My fiancé and I ended up having our own competition and we made our way down the line, comparing sauces and figuring out each other’s tastes. My only complaint, I guess, is that I don’t know who my favorites are. I know I liked #15…a very strong tomato-​based sauce… but who is #15? It’s a mystery. And now that I know the winners… I don’t know what number they were… so I can’t decide if I liked the winners or not.
Anyway — other than the mystery of who’s sauces were who’s, it ended up being fun and a great way to start our day in San Francisco. I would just suggest that it be shortened for the non-​judges. 3 – 5 hours is a long time to spend at a small competition if you’re not a judge. Also, put on the website what number was what restaurant. That way, we can compare our notes and see what sauces we liked belong to which restaurants so we can go visit them. If you only had time to be there for an hour, you kind of feel left in the dark on what was going on.

Prior to attending 2008’s Boss of Sauce, I forgot to read reviews. Specifically, I forgot to read my 2007 review. What was I thinking? Why did I wake up a little bit early to become a judge, only to just miss my bus and arrive 15 minutes later than intended as attendee #102!?!
Rejected! It’s okay though because judge #100 and #101 were friends of friends.
I had noted last year that I wouldn’t want to be a judge. How could I forget in just one year’s time? Must exercise the brain… It worked out in the end though as I realized once again that I’d rather not put myself under the pressure of judging.
Instead, I sampled sauces in between the judging, working first one direction, then the other, and finally through the middle if I had missed any]. I grabbed drinks [The Tutti Santi was delicious!], pasta [w/​RABBIT sauce, yo!] and flourless chocolate cake [So rich and so fudgy]. Everyone looked like they were having a good time. The servers were all smiles and so was the table I was floating around [aka sampling with, but also running around gathering cakes and pasta for!]. I’m not big on bread, but the bread at the event was wonderfully soft, fresh, and delicious. Italian French Baking Company [
, official bread sponsor of the event, definitely deserves a shout-​out if not a review.
Zuppa was there to defend their title, and it looks like they’ll have to come back next year to reclaim it. Congrats to Blazing Saddles and Tarantino’s [People’s Choice]! Thanks, Unilocal,for the free tickets! I had a blast, as usual. I left completely stuffed and had no room for dinner for hours!

wow… wow…WOW…wow…
First of all, a big THANKS to Jessica T. and Unilocal for the comp tix … 4 hours of tasting yummy (and not so yummy) sauces from restaurants all over the city/​east bay/~peninsula and FREE booze really made the event amazing and a great treat. From reading previous reviews, I was nervous about becoming a judge (thought I would be forced to stay till the end…) but I’m so glad we got there on time to become one of the first round 100 judges. ZUPPA was MY FAVORITE and no surprise as to why they won first place last yr. and second place this yr! Not sure which sauce was Tarantino’s but there was one that was super meaty (thin stripes of beef? kinda stew-​y more than pasta saucy but… delicious) that I really liked (darn…does anyone know what I’m talking about??) It was fun to chat with the other judges at the table and hear everyone else’s opinions.
Highlights of the event were also:
— The charming and entertaining host sing «That’s Amore» with an encore following soon after.
— Zoning out during break times while envisioning the intro scene from Blades of Glory everytime they played «Time to Say Goodbye»
— Those amazing chocolate fudge cake samples…
— Victoria’s AMAZING Tutti Santi cocktails … couldn’t taste the skyy vodka or campari bc it was so well-​blended with passion fruit juice and lemon… but it def. was a creeper.
— The passing out of beer, water… and beer.
Next year, I’ll definately skip on breakfast and head over on an empty stomach… as my five cups of Victoria’s refreshing cocktails and endless slices of french bread and bread sticks made me wish I had extra storage room downstairs.
WHAT AN AWESOME EVENT! Anyone who has the opportunity to be a judge, I definately recommend it. THANKS Unilocal for another kick-​ass experience. XOXOXO

I had a great time at the 2008 Boss of the Sauce competition. I got to sit in on the first round judging again just as I had hoped, and I finally got to meet a couple of my favorite Unilocal reviewers Don B and Ed U. I didn’t take advantage of the free tickets offered to the Unilocal Elite this year, but I did get to chat with the lovely Unilocal ladies Jessica and Connie again.
The first round judges were made up of the first 100 people in attendance. With judging set to begin about an hour after we checked in that gave me plenty of time to sample what some of the vendors were offering. I must admit that the flourless chocolate cake from A.G. Ferrari Foods was one of my favorites of the day. The Batter Bakery served up delicious samples of their cookies, biscotti and shortbread; I liked the lavender shortbread and the little drop cookies with a dollop of chocolate and a hazelnut on top that I bought a bag of each to take home at the end of the competition.
In addition to the sweet treats I was more than happy that this year’s event offered free beer, wine and cocktails. Fellow Unilocaler Victoria D created a refreshing, fruity cocktail featuring passionfruit juice and vodka along with other ingredients. I lost count on the number of cups of the Birra Moretti lager I had throughout the day. There were also several fine Italian wines that I did not try. Dimmi Spirits brought an elixir that had the aroma of cough syrup, but tasted quite good giving me a nice and warm feeling as it flowed down my throat. Judges actually got shots of these to «cleanse our palette» as we ended our sauce tasting.
In the meats department I had some thinly sliced Columbus Salame on French bread and some sliced up sausage samples from Guerra Quality Meats. I also tried various olive oils with bread and cheese cubes.
Finding a seat at one of the judges’ tables was the toughest task of the afternoon. I think Don B and I were the only two people to not reserve a chair when we first walked in. Luckily for me a lady noticed that I seemed lost and ask me whether I wanted the empty seat next to her. None of the judges at the table where I sat were Unilocalers but more than half of the judges at my table were Italian so I got to learn quite a bit more about Italian culture.
Our server seemed confused. He either brought us the sauce samples too frequently or too far apart and he lost count as our table only sampled 16 of the 17 competing sauces, but he couldn’t figure out which sauce he missed so we settled on ending our tasting at 16. I found that I liked one of the plain tomato sauces (sauce number 5) the most because it had nice aroma, a bright orange/​red hue and it tasted very tomatoey. The least favorite at our table was our final sample and we discussed it openly that sauce number 6 failed badly because it smelled and tasted burnt. In between sauce samples I stuffed myself with mostly bread sticks and an occasional slice of French bread.
I actually got up and left the church for about forty minutes to take a walk around North Beach because I felt so bloated with all that sauce in me. I returned just in time for the announcement of the winners. I’ll be interested to see if they post which sauce matched which restaurant on their website. That way based on my saucy notes I’ll know which restaurants to avoid.
For the record, Tarantino’s of San Francisco was the favorite among the 100 first round judges and took the peoples’ choice award. Trattoria la Siciliana of Berkeley was third, defending champions Zuppa of San Francisco was second and a truly shocked and ecstatic group from Blazing Saddles Catering and Barbecue of Santa Rosa took the top prize and was crowned as Boss of the Sauce for 2008.
A big thank you goes out to Jessica who was sweet enough to hook me up with some cool Boss of the Sauce swag as I left the church. I already look forward to next year’s event.

You know English is a jacked up language when «Boss» and «Sauce» are spelled completely different. No wonder my cousin has so much trouble.
Went here thanks to Unilocal sponsoring the event. Clara and I went to SF for the day and this was the first leg of the journey. We actually found decent street parking right by Cobb’s and walked the ¼ mile. The event takes place in the basement/​community area of the St Peter and Paul Church. We ran into Tinna and friend there and we also saw the very lovely Jessica and Connie hosting the Unilocal table.
We didn’t make it in time to be a judge, but after trying 30+ shots of various spaghetti sauces, I have to say I’m glad I was not a judge who had to eat, savor, assess, and judge each one. Some were just not to my liking. Too much oregano, too tangy, one of them was basically a stew with hot tomato paste mixed in.
There were some good ones, and there was a rather interesting one with elk meat and shiitake mushrooms. I believe in some South American countries that is supposed to increase your virilty.
Free beer and wine in the other room and this was a fun event. Plenty of other things to snack, from bread to flourless chocolate cake to biscottis to salami. –1 because it was so flingin’ flangin’ hot down there and those of us not fortunate enough to be a judge had to scramble during 10-​minute judging reprieves to down shots of sauce like there was no tomorrow.
I think I guzzled down the equivalent of half a jar of sauce. Gah. I’ve got enough lycopene through New Years’. Think it’s time to lay off the sauce now.

I really hit the sauce today. It wasn’t hard not to… with 20+ sauces to sample from various restaurants and a room full of wine, beer and spirits (all included with the admission fee) from 12−4pm… I was sauced out by the end of the day.
There were other tasty samples other than sauce provided by several other Italian vendors as well. AG Ferrari gave out samples of their flourless chocolate torte. I went back for sixths. OMG, it was to die for. The Tutti Santi special cocktail from Cent’ Anni was so yummy. I went back for sixths. I was getting it for Jessica too, I swear.
The first 100 people at the event were given the opportunity to be judges, and they selected the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Local Celebrity Judges selected 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place winners.

Frank Chu was at the event as well. When he found out that tickets were cash or check only, he actually left to get money from an ATM and came back. Now you know that an event is big if Frank Chu is in attendance. It’s too bad they didn’t have him as one of the celebrity judges!

Boss of the Sauce might be one of San Francisco’s best kept secrets…

Thank you Unilocal for hooking me and my plus one up with tickets for Boss of the Sauce (otherwise $ 20). Thank you helpful Unilocalers’ for tipping us off on arriving early to gain a coveted spot as First Round Judges. I was expecting a lot after all the great reviews of 2007’s event… and this event was WAY better than I even imagined.
We arrived before 12 and received our Judges stickers. We then enjoyed our first hour sampling various olive and balsamic oils, biscotti, cappuccino (our first of 3!), wine, beer by Moretti, and an incredible passion fruit cocktail. Best of all, they were all FREE!
Then, it was time to get down to business. We were lucky enough to choose great table-​mates. Our «server» of the sauces in the competition was awesome too and made sure we all had wine to begin the competition. Even better, other servers were on «back up» and also taking our drink orders throughout the competition!
We then began tasting little cups of the Bay Area’s best tomato sauces. With each sauce, we completed a ballot rating aroma (10%), appearance (10%), and taste (80%). The sauces ranged from super meaty to vegetarian to elk to fennel-​infused. Yum! Even the sauces that were not my favorite were still too good to not eat a few spoonfuls. Our table came equipped with breadsticks and sourdough bread to aid with tasting.
After every 5 sauces or so, we were given a break to grab another cocktail and the non-​judges could swarm to the front to try more sauces. Then, it was back to tasting until we’d tried all 17 sauces (a few restaurants didn’t show up) and several alcoholic beverages. Next, the 4 not-​so-​celebrity tasters came up on-​stage and tried the top sauces. The final results showed that Tarantino’s sauce was the People’s Choice (the 100 judges like us!), Blazing Saddles (Santa Rosa) was the «celebrity» tasters first choice, Zuppa was second, and Trattoria la Siciliana was third. I also loved Lucca and Pellegrini’s sauces!
We then continued to chat with our table mates and drink more until the event crew literally took our table and chairs out from under us. Great times and I plan to be back next year! I’ll be counting down the 364 days :)

We had a blast grazing through all the different saucy sauces! In addition to being able to rub elbows with some really nifty chefs. There were definitely some sauces that were amazing and some that was downright shocking (not in a good saucy way either!)
It was a great random day to spend in the city. :)

Thanks to Unilocal for the wonderful and fun event! But seriously, fiancé and I are all sauce’d out! We tasted 30 cups of sauce but how in the world did I get so full from just 30 tiny cups and mind you, I didn’t finish most cups (well, some were just way too sour!). But seriously those sauces filled us up and we skipped dinner. By the 20^th sauce, I thought I would pass out and never make it to the 30^th but surprisingly, we stayed till the very end and filled out every single one of those judging forms!
Kudos to the sponsors and hosts, it seriously took a whole lotta effort and organization for this event, from the scorecards to the runners and of course the cooks! Interesting experience and I was priviledged to be one of the judges!

So now, I can say I’ve been to 30 restaurants in SF, Bay area and Marin? Buahaha…

OH BOY, DO I FEEL SAUCY!
I tried all thirty sauces. I was so saucy after! We left and had gelato to clean our palate. oops. a sauce burp. oops another sauce burp. Three hours later!
It was a lot of fun and all the chefs were quite flirty.

All the chefs were super excited and even Emmy from the Spaghetti Shack was there doling out sauce!
Out of all thirty, there were three that I liked.
I was so saucy, I was a tomato flavored scratch and sniff sticker.

First off, thanks Unilocal for hooking me up with free tickets to this awesome event, and thanks Fieri for putting on such a fun, delicious competition!
We arrived close to 1 pm, and Jessica T. at the will call table informed me that there was just one judging sticker (of 100) left. I decided to go for it. We entered the gym-​like event center just in time to take our seats at the judging table and start the first round of sauce-​tasting. Our sauce facilitator, Justino (the Italianized version of his real name), handed us scorecards as the emcee explained that we were to judge the 29 different sauces based on 1) Aroma (10%), 2) Appearance (10%), and of course, 3) Taste (80%). There were endless replenishments of bread from Italian French Bakery for dipping, small glasses of cabarnet and pinot grigio to pair, and cups of coffee beans to sniff and cleanse the palette between sauces.
Over the next 2 hours, I became a marinara critiquing extraordinaire! We sampled plain sauces, creamy cheesy orange sauces, vodka sauces, hearty meat sauces (from basic ground beef to spicy sausage to gamey lamb), sauces topped with a sprig of basil (which always earned 5 points for appearance from Judge 100), sauces drenched in olive oil, sauces pumped with mushrooms and veggies, and everything in between. Sometimes I had barely touched one sauce to my tongue when the servers were already collecting our scorecards and bringing out the next batch. They really kept that sauce coming, and did a great job orchestrating it! By the last 7 candidates or so, I was totally skipping over the bread and just barely sipping at the cups of sauce… I was SO full.
My favorite was #4, a creamy orangey sauce with ground meat and the perfect melding of cheese, tomato and spicy flavor; my +1’s favorite (our man Justino allowed him to become Judge 101) was #29, a unique Indian inspired sauce with a peppery cumin and/​or turmeric flavor. The very last sauce we were served, #5, was probably the best all around: it smelled wonderful, its presentation was top-​notch with a melted pat of cheese and basil garnish, and it tasted just as delightful as it looked and smelled.
Sleepy and stuffed, we decided to take off (or more like, waddle off) at the end of round 1, so we didn’t stick around for the final judging and winners. However, Boss of Sauce overall was DEFINITELY a winner. And the perfect way to spend a Sunday midday before going home and dozing off into a satisfied Sunday siesta, ahhh…

This is the first year for this Boss of the Sauce event partners and sponsored by Unilocal, Fieri, Salute Magazine, North Beach Chamber of Commerce, NIAF, KFOG, ItalFoods, Open Table, and Birra Moretti.
Not only is this in celebration of the Italian culture and cuisine but the proceeds is for the San Francisco Food Bank, St. Peter & Paul Church and Fieri! Wine, beer, pizza, pasta, sausages, pizza, salami and Italian breads and red, red, red sauces of every kind of mixtures kept coming every 20 minutes for us to sample. I have to admit that my favorite is meat sauce, so the beans, and other variation didn’t win me over. I think I am ooozing tomato sauce and as red as my sweater when I left the hall (St. Peter & Paul Church).
If you arrived early, (around Noon), the seating up front is for panels of judges to vote for each sauces as they come up on the long tables. At least 10 sauces per session (from 1:00 to 4:00 pm). There were also your choice of purchases for olive oils, Italian music, Italian cigars, and expresso coffee machine.

I left stuft and giddy. I mean how can you go wrong with free samples of north beach pizza, moretti beer, fine meats, bread and local restaurants’ tomato sauces?! This $ 20 fundraiser was a fun local competition for the best tomato sauce. If you were one of the lucky first 100, you got to participate as a people’s choice judge… but you were committed to several hours of bread and sauce indulgence. While you sampled, you were engulfed in a feeling of community and culture, and serenaded by Italian Heartstrings (
).
I have a feeling next year’s event will be even bigger and better. Salute.

Wow, that was a lot of sauce!
I think between my two plus ones and I we tried all of the sauces at least once.
Besides the delicious pasta sauces, there were also other food producers offering endless samples of salami, pizza, olive oil, pasta, wine, Moretti beer, and ESPRESSO.
I’m still shaking.
FIERI has been putting this on for decades and I’ll be back next year fo’ sho’!
