Not good. Bad food. Bad service. Never again. Everything seemed like it came from the back of a Sysco truck. Not a fan of this place.

Needed some food before the One Republic concert during Super Bowl weekend!(I know, late post). Came here for a quick bite and luckily they weren’t super packed. It’s kind of hard to find as it’s in a small little alley, but with GPS, I was able to find it(I’m horrible with directions}. They sat us on the patio which was nice because there was a heat lamp, but our table was on uneven ground and it was kind of uncomfortable. It was also huge traffic area as we sat near the door. I had my heart set on comfort food so I got the mac and cheese and ham hock tater tots. The mac and cheese was pretty good. Nothing special though — no exciting flavors or anything. I loved the baked breading on top. The ham hock tater tots were kind of a let down. Aside from the crispy outside, it was super soft on the inside like mashed potatoes only not as soft The didn’t have much flavor, but it did come with 2 sauces which I wasn’t a fan of. I not usually a sauce fan to be fair though. Overall, this place was okay. I don’t think it’s worth the money you pay for it. sauce — ham hock tater tots, baked mac and cheese

Enjoyed a very nice meal here prior to SFJazz concert, April 2016. The food was nicely prepared, subtle flavors and very good presentation. I had the beet salad and the salmon — both were perfect. My companion had the tomato bisque(lovely) and the mac & cheese(huge and ham-hock infused). Server was polite and well-informed and was cognizant of our time constraints. Decent selection of single malts at the bar. The chef is a little bacon(or ham hock) crazy, so meal ended up being a tad heavy, but I should have paid more attention when ordering as there were several menu selections sans pork. But it was delicious. Space is a little tight, but not uncomfortable. Overall, a fine experience.

Came here for dinner on St. Patrick’s Day. We were meeting a couple of ladies from the SF Conservatory of Music before the performance. We came in almost an hour late due to traffic but they were very nice expediting our orders since we have only an hour left before the show. Got lucky to find a parking right in front of the restaurant. Place is pretty small but entrée portions are huge. Due to the time constraint we decided to just ordered entrée right away. We are a party of four and we ended up ordering the salmon with salad and bacon; clam chowder; braised short rib stroganoff and their special mushroom pasta. Everything was tasty. Large portion so its a good idea to come here with a big appetite. Prices are reasonable for the size of the meal that you are getting. Service is good as well. The menu looks so tasty but we noticed that most of them had bacon in it … Hahaha we wanted to try more items on the menu so we made another reservations this weekend for a party of 5. Will definitely ordered the braised short rib stroganoff again. Yum !!! Highly recommended.

Thick cut Portobello Mushroom Fries topped with daikon sprouts +delicious dipping sauce. Superb for sharing between 2 – 3 people. Dipped the side of cheese toast into the tomato bisque… wondrous. Fried chicken looked good, and was pretty good per my fellow diner. I tried some of the mashed potatoes which were ordinary. Crimson Pluot Salad was good, but nothing to rave about. It was a simple salad after all. Get the sweet gem caesar if you like anchovies, and if you don’t like anchovies, you can just pick them out… but when presented, that appears to be the main ingredient in the salad… Anddddd I got a bowl of peppered bacon to go with my salad. Bacon was great, but quite salty. So salty, wanting water just thinking about it. I’d come here for late night cravings! Was pretty much empty when I went, so food came out pretty promptly. Two co-ed bathrooms incase you were wondering. Full bar, but opted for water because I was 10 tireds that night.

This place was flawless and definitely a highlight of our San Francisco trip. I loved the atmosphere, the service was great(thoughtful waitress who intuited that we were headed to a show around the corner and paced our evening accordingly– so appreciated!) and the FOOD was just scrumptious. I had steak frites and it was cooked to perfection, accompanied with some truly stellar french fries cutely packaged in a little paper bag. We ordered a slew of apps that were a hit with everyone at the table. I would call the vibe«gourmet comfort.» We left warmly satisfied, just in time to make it to our show.

This is our go-to place for when we want to eat out a little fancy but not too fancy. Although there is an arts district dinnertime rush, we prefer sitting at the bar, so usually we head in early and skip making reservations. My partner and I like to share small plates — the carpaccio is perfect! And the bowl of bacon? For me that could be dessert(although their actual desserts are tasty too.) This isn’t to say their big plates aren’t great also — the steak, fish and others have tried have been tasty and delightful. Sauce often has multi-course meals for restaurant week, new year’s, valentine’s day and other occasions. I usually go for that and have never been disappointed. Riel is a talented bartender who puts up with me not knowing what I want. He’s taught me a lot about classic drinks and indulges me in something fun and original when I can’t make up my mind. We eat here more than any single restaurant in the entire city. Tasty without being high falutin’… above average and consistently excellent.

Came here for dinner with a few friends. Wasn’t bad, but definitely not worth coming back. Th staff was super friendly, but the food did not wow at all. My tomato soup was okay, but my grilled cheese on the side was just a slice of cheese between barely grilled bread.

You would think that I would go out and try new things when SF Restaurant Week hits. But each year, I find myself drawn to the same restaurants over and over again. Go figure, maybe that’s their master plan. Anyway, I spent the night trying to find a place to eat, unfortunately in my own car which meant wherever I could find a parking space was where we were going to go. Mission — out. Downtown — crazy with the Super Bowl City going up. That lead us over to the ever inviting Hayes Valley. I lucked out and found a spot a block away from Sauce and decided to visit this old friend. We were worried once we walked in as the bar was packed with people. The staff immediately came over though and said if we could wait 10 minutes, they just needed to seat several large parties and could accomodate us. Score! Within minutes, the bar emptied as they moved everyone towards the back dining area. The front was pretty packed too, so we were fine sitting at one of the bar tables. The menu here is pretty good regularly, but we really wanted to try to $ 40 menu which turned out really good. We told the server to just bring us everything since there were only a couple of options. I’ll have to remember to be more selective though as each time they brought a dish out, the one I favored was put in front of my husband, which he loved and ate more of. I thought sharing was caring. This year’s dishes included pork scallopini or brussel and braised leek salad as starters, kobe steak with broiled oyster or smoked tofu steak with parmesan quinoa as entrees, and flourless chocolate truffles for dessert. I loved the pork, steak and oyster. Tofu was good, but was a bit much after a while. The potatoes and mushrooms that accompanied the stead and tofu were quite good as well. I love chocolate and thought at first that the two truffles were a bit small, but they were so decadent that any more would have been overwhelming. All in all, another nice visit at Sauce. I’m glad it’s slightly off the beaten path, but being so close to the theater probably makes this a good option if you’re looking to have a drink and/or meal before the curtain goes up. Enjoy restaurant week everyone! As if we need an excuse to go out to eat in SF.

Came for a weeknight dinner with a friend and had a lovely time. Great space(it’s nice when you«feel» how great the ambiance of a place is instead of just seeing it). Warm, simple, not trendy(no counter height tables or reclaimed wood tables). Great service – just the right amount of attention. Food was delicious! We started with the Mac n cheese and tater tots. Both were really well done and the green celery sauce that came w/the tots was particularly delicious. For entrees, we split the fried chicken and the beef stroganoff. Loved both but wish the stroganoff had a little bit more sauce. The consistency of the sauce was a little too thick as well but it tasted wonderful. Everything was cooked perfectly and I would highly recommend both dishes. We had the s’mores for dessert. Good idea in theory but just didn’t do it for me. No warm gooey chocolate and the graham cracker was more like a mini-muffin tin cookie type crust. Marshmallow was best part of the dish and I would have gladly just eaten a plate of that. One star off because the wine pour wasn’t very generous and the dessert was not executed well. Overall it’s worth a visit though and a treat/nicer dinner place if you’re in the area for a show.

I came here on my birthday(didn’t mention it, but it was a special day for me). Service was excellent. We arrived before the dinner crowd, so there was plenty of seating to start out but then was jam packed on a Monday. The lobster bisque was excellent, as was the clam chowder. The soups were a little smaller than expected but were a much better quality than in similar restaurants. The angus steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, as I ordered.

Decent dinner, not the greatest, but definitely not bad. I came with a group and we were seated promptly. My boyfriend and I got here a little earlier than the rest, though, and had a drink to start at the bar. Drink prices are okay, depending on what you’re having. His beer was $ 6.50, my cider was $ 7. We ordered some starters, the marinara sliders were just okay. The bread and garlic butter that was brought out was also just okay. For my meal I ordered the lobster bisque and the bacon-wrapped scallops. The bisque, again, was just okay. Lacked a little salt or pepper, and there was no salt or pepper at our table. The scallops were devine, but on the small side. It came with four smallish(not the«small» scallops; these were on the very small side though for«big» scallops… Bay or sea? I never know the difference) scallops on a bed of greens, with a great mustard that I used to dip my scallops in and then as a dressing for the greens. I asked how they made the mustard, cause it was so good! Our waiter said it was made with bourbon and grainy mustard, then cooked down. I couldn’t taste the bourbon, but it was the perfect spicy mustard! Both items were $ 15. My boyfriend ordered the salmon, and he scraped his plate so it must have been good. Others at the table ordered the fried chicken, and I almost think I should have gone with that. It looked great, with mashed potatoes! When the bill came, we split it evenly amongst the 8 of us, and it came out to $ 120/couple, including tip. I should mention that also included the drinks that were ordered at the table, too. So, $ 60ish per person. Not a totally bad price. Our waiter was good, didn’t bother us too much during the meal, but he did leave empty plates on the table a little longer than I thought was prudent for a server, so he could have been a tad more attentive. Would I come back? Eh, maybe. But it’s a big city with lots of options.

Yum, YUM, YUM!!! I’m really unclear why the ratings are low for this resto. The lovely service, fun bar and incredible food all served by professionals make me very happy. This was the second time I was there and the food was incredible both times. Bring an appetite! Portions are huge, desserts decadent and the drinks/wine/soda selection inspired. I truly love Sauce! ~Ms. Ali

Really surprised that they get 3.5 in reviews. It’s a solid 4. I came here post-Turkey day to get dinner with friends. I made reservations that week, and it was relatively easy(online!). Sauce was on my list for a while, since I saw they had portobello fries. Mmm… been looking for a place in SF to get that fix(Bottega Louie, you ruin me!!). This addressed the fix somewhat. =) It looks like a nice place to go for a quiet date, or even a large(not rowdy) group. Portobello Fries: They’re tiny. Like super tiny, which made me a little sad(in comparison to Bottega Louie), but the portobello is super juicy and mushroom-y, which made me happy. I just wish it was 3x the quantity. Tots: Delicious. Mashed insides, light fry on the outside, Came with 2 sauces(aioli and tomato-based), both of which were delicious. Quinoa salad: Was surprisingly good. It came with some fried onions on top, which helped with the texture. Bacon Wrapped Scallops: It delivers exactly what it says, but I felt like the scallops weren’t done as well(a touch over done). I guess it makes sense since bacon cooks at a different temperature, and the bacon was delicious. But. When is bacon not delicious? Beef Stroganoff: I had a bit of my friends plate, and it was delicious. The pasta was really delicious and tasted fresh(do they make in-house??), and the beef was fork tender. Lobster Bisque: I ordered because I wasn’t too hungry, and it was plenty for you to eat as an entrée. Super creamy and delicious, though I wish it came with a touch more lobster(theme of the night — me wanting more of the delicious stuff). Also had a fair amount of alcohol here. The honey sidecar is delicious, and sneaky. If you want a surprising drunk, get this. =) The Bourbon Smashed was also good, and you can taste the alcohol. Originally, I’d only give it a 4, but feel like a 5 is in order because our waitress was simply SOGOOD. We had a table of 9 that walked in across 30 minutes(parking is pain in the area). Our waitress was super nice in getting us waters as we arrived. She explained the menu very well. And when we needed to split the check between 5 cards, she was super helpful in making sure she charged us correctly. So points to her! Points to Sauce — her great service moved you from a 4 to 5 star in my book(give her a raise!).

I came here for a team lunch. This place is located inside Belden Lane, where all the cute little french/italian restaurants are. Service was great here, staff were attentive and super friendly. I tried their chicken burger, and we ordered their garlic beard and fries to share. This is the BEST chicken burger I had for awhile, high recommend to try. It was super juicy and the taste was delicious and chicken was cooked very well. The fries were crispy and the garlic beard was also very good and had a generous amount of garlic taste(don’t forget your mints!)

I should have listened to the Unilocal reviews on this one. We had opera tickets and made reservations here beforehand. As we walked in, we were the only people there besides a very old couple. The waiter asked us for our drink order. I wasn’t sure what cocktail I wanted yet, so I ordered the two appetizers we had been eyeing, and we lightly discussed one more with the waiter there. Being a server, I know how annoying it is when somebody pretends they know what they want and then they hesitate, wasting your time when you could be tending to other tables. But there was no one in this joint! He interrupted me to say«umm…drinks?» Kind of rude. We ordered the portobello fries and the bacon wrapped scallops. Both were kinda whatever. Expensive for the quantity and bland taste. We both liked our cocktails however. My boyfriend got the bourbon smash grandma and it was quite refreshing and delicious, which is why I tacked on a star. We were so unimpressed with the price and the food that we just closed out and decided to eat somewhere else for dinner before the show. 2 cocktails and 2 appetizers, 55 bucks. No thanks, Sauce!

Came here for late night eats(circa 1am). The service was great and the food was stellar. We had the lamb sausage sliders and the shrimp scampi. The wine was meh. Maybe we both ordered a bad glass(the house Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot), but it was difficult to down. The ambiance was not douchey in the least, and that’s becoming increasingly hard to find in the City nowadays. I’m looking forward to coming here again and updating my review, perhaps after a meal and better wine/drinks.

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what I think about this place. Before I begin, I have to say that my group wasn’t be the most cooperative since there were so many of us so props to the restaurant for putting up with our group. However, I’m going to be fair with my review and try to be as unbiased as I can. The ambiance and mood around this restaurant is surprisingly upscale based on the location. We showed up a little early for our reservation and the hosts behind the bar were very friendly and accommodating to our group. After being seated, we were still waiting for a few members of our party and I could notice that our host was starting to get annoyed. That’s completely understandable so I tried to make things easier for him by collecting our group’s order to save him some trouble. However, he started getting snappy with a few of my friends when they were asked to order. But in the end, I would probably let it slide since I probably would’ve done the same. Anyways, we ordered a bunch of appetizers to share, some of which include: mushroom fries, mac n cheese, ham hock tater tots, and the white truffle cheese bread. Out of all of those, I would say the tater tots were my favorite and that’s an easy choice because the rest were kind of bland despite the fancy ingredients. Personally for my entrée, I ordered the organic fried chicken. The plate was super presentable and I couldn’t wait to dig in. I would say the first bite was great, but after a few the dish started to taste bland as well. I don’t know, maybe it was the mood of my friends that was affecting me, but I don’t think I was feeling it that night(especially since the bill was so high). In regards to my experience, I think Sauce is a nice place to go for a date, but for casually eating, no thank you.

Came here with my boss and the senior staff. They spoke highly of it, so I was expecting a really good BBQ place. Which it wasn’t too bad at the end, I liked it. well, I like some parts of it. Bad: This place had a lot of TVs, which was ok. It felt more of a bar ambience than an actually BBQ place. Good: The cool part about this place was that it had an unique menu. One of the items that caught my attention was the Runny Burger. It had bacon, fried egg, jalapeño jelly, and peanut butter. Was pretty shockingly good. the jalapeño jelly actually came a little sweet favor to the salty burger. To me, it was very salty. Then again, restaurants like these are filled with MSG and salt. The apple slaw for my side was ok. Rating: Food: 4 Price: 3(Highly overpriced in a lot of the items. My burger was $ 14 + apple slaw.) Service: 4 Overall: 3.5 but round off to 4. Would come to find if the ribs and the BBQ are really good. That would be the true test.

I’ve been here many times over the years after performances at the opera and symphony as well as a few private events. While I’ve never booked a private event here, it’s my understanding that it’s somewhat reasonable for the area. Back room ambiance is dark and could be cozy for dinner party, rehearsal dinner, etc. We recently came back over the weekend so this review is based on that. Service was amazing. Very friendly and prompt with order handling, dish removal, etc. Food and drinks were a tad disappointing and I noticed that it wasn’t just me. Very bland and everyone was looking for the salt and pepper. We also ordered several drinks and the pours in relation to the drink prices was on the chintzy side. Bonus for the late night kitchen hours.

On food alone, four stars might seem a little generous but factor in the fact that food is served till 2am, then yes I’ll gladly bump Sauce up a notch. I met a friend here, post-happy hour drinking, for a pretty late dinner around 10-ish since he knew that the kitchen was open late. We sat at the bar and shared a couple of «Social Plates» plus continue with our merry boozing ways. Really enjoyed the bacon wrapped meatloaf on the fluffy bed of whipped potatoes and gravy. I mean c’mon… it’s meatloaf wrapped in bacon. Anytime you have this combination, you have a winner. See my equally favorable thoughts on Fearless’ take on it( ) The Daily Slider was Italian meatball and in hindsight, we should have ordered something else since it’s pretty similar to the meatloaf but it was pretty delicious nonetheless. The meatballs were moist and flavorful. Rounding off our meal with the ham hock tater tots and we were pretty stuffed between us. The tots are more reminiscent of English potato croquettes which I love equally much if not more nostalgically. Friendly attentive service from our bartender and a nice cozy, albeit dark, environment for a good catch up over food and drink. Remember even if it’s past midnight, you have more options than the shame-dog you’re smelling up the street… try Sauce out.
