Nein, nein, nein. Schroeder’s claims to be a German bar, yet they charge $ 10 for a beer and $ 15 for bratwurst. That ain’t German. That’s SF bullshit.

This was my go to place for happy hour with my coworkers. Love the ambiance of the place and there are tons of long tables for seating. It does get hard to get the bartenders’ attention during happy hour but they have a great selection of drinks. I like that they also have a place to drop your coats/bags if you don’t want to carry them in the place. The pretzel knots here are delish! They are a bit salty but when you pair them with the dip it’s a great dish for your drinks

I was long overdue to try the revamped, modernized Schroeder’s and found it to be a mixed bag. The atmosphere is now amazing; they kept all that was good and spruced it up nicely. Same with the menu which now finally has some veggies and freshness, just enough CA flair to the traditional German favorites. The issue we had was with the ridiculously chaotic service. We sat at the bar on a busy Friday for lunch and it was a complete cluster***. Food runners were literally walking around the massive restaurant asking people, «did you order this»? We had *two* different, incorrect meals put in front of us before ours arrived(after a very long wait). No surprise, it was cold when it finally came. We weren’t about to send it back — could have been an hour before it returned(and likely still cold). The items would have been really quite delicious if hot. The bartenders were confused beyond belief themselves. It was as if it was everyone’s first day. They need more staff and/or more training. It was certainly busy, but probably not any different than any other Friday lunch. Did the regular staff all walk out, to be replaced by novices? It really didn’t make sense -???

Great place to catch a game on TV and to nozzle on a Sausage Board! There’s a variety of German sausages to feast upon with the sausage board so you won’t be disappointed. The Smothered Tots is also a must order. Absolutely tasty. Wash it all down with a couple glasses of the NV Riesling(Germany Sparkling) and you are done for the night! Will be back for the friendly services and amazing sausages! =)

I only had a glass of champagne here($ 14 =() But the environment was really fun! My 2 friends and I were able to get a spot at the end of one of their long, wooden tables which was great because the place was packed! I would love to go back another time for the food. Fun find, definitely feels like a German beer hall in DTSF!

When you think of the city on the bay, you don’t tend to think about boisterous German bierhalls… but you should. Schroeder’s takes the traditional Bavarian«gemütlichkeit» up a notch. The traditional plank benches and hanging chandeliers are upgraded to modern luxury. And the food follows suit — traditional sausages, spaetzle and schnitzels that get a foodie upgrade. But of course, then there’s the bier. With nearly two dozen local, German and European brews(skip the 0.3L and go for the ‘Halbe’(0.5L) or Mass(1L) steins) you can’t get much closer to the Bavarian capital without being on the other side of the globe. Best of all, this local treat is conveniently located right smack in the heart of the financial district, making it as easy to get to as drowning out a second liter of Hofbrau. Ein Prosit!

Great place to hang out after work with a group of peeps. Clean, spacious, lots of standing area as well as large wooden communal tables. just like Germany???(jk I haven’t been) Unfortunately they don’t have happy hour pricing — it’s $ 12 for cocktails and starts at $ 5 for beer, fair for SF and prime FIDI area pricing. Their smothered tots($ 12) is quite the deal as it’s a heaping PLATE, good to share for 3 or 4 and probably has crack in it because that shit was DELICIOUS and the only factor that makes this place above average to me. I seriously don’t know how they elevated the tots to be so good. Typically with tater tots, that usually means dry and tasteless, but these do, in fact, have potato flavor, are perfectly crisp on the outside, and somehow soaks in all the delicious umami flavor of the mushroom gravy without getting soggy, and the jalapenos are just the perfect kick. UGHHHHH. Good thing we were sharing cause I coulda demolished that shit. OK I’m sorry I called this place average. I just remembered this place also has DASBOOT(not many places in the city do!) and their pretzel knots look bomb AF even though I didn’t have any. I did sample some of their dinner offerings for a Unilocal event when they reopened and their food is pretty solid, though, yes, a bit pricey, but it’s on par with the area.

TLDR: food is overpriced and low quality; beer not much better. We started with the Kartoffel Tots. They were fine, although it would take extra effort to ruin tater tots. We had the Spätzle for our entrée. I get that the chef is doing an interpretation of German food; for this dish(at least) it’s a horrible translation. Very salty and dry. Small as hell noodles. They should be embarrassed to charge $ 19(!) for this. The German Chocolate Cake(which is an American dessert, btw) was dry and did not have much coconut in the frosting. It was more like a flourless chocolate cake. A horrible execution on what is normally one of my all time favorites. The beer was ok, although it did not have a head on it. My server tried to explain to me that a hefeweizen would never have a head. Really? Then why are you serving me the beer in a Weizen glass, which is designed to accommodate plenty of foam? The beer tasted ok, so I suspect residue in the glass. If you most come here, stick to the beer and skip the food. Better yet, don’t come here. There are much better choices for German food(fusion or traditional) in SF.

Drink and eat like Germans do! A friend of mine who lived in Germany for a few years suggested we meet in this place and as soon as I stepped in through the doors I knew that I’d like the place! The space is vast and laid out nicely. They have a nice bar you can sit at, but the benches are the way to go. The beer is awesome, but you must watch for the alcohol content! Some of them are pretty high and you may be surprised if you do not pay attention to the description on the menu. I tried two different beers both of which were above 10% in alcohol content, but not surprisingly I do not recall their names! We tried an order of Chicken Schnitzel Sliders, A+! I then tried the Jäger Schnitzel; delicious but very rich. You may consider hitting the gym the next day because you will have a few extra calories stored before the night is over! My friend ordered the Wiener Schnitzel. I did not try it, but it looked good and he was happy with it. Judging from his very clean plate at the end, I have no reason to not believe him! Get a group of friends together and meet there for some fun!

Great experience. I was hanging out with some family in the City and they wanted to try Das Boot beer, which probably has about 33oz of beer in there. To order the beer boot, you would have to put down a $ 50 deposit in case the glass breaks — which totally makes sense. We ordered a few plates to share. The chicken wings weren’t that great because it tasted like it was boiled before being thrown on the grill and covered in the sauce. I personally wouldn’t order them again. The bratswurst sampler was pretty neat. They had 6 different types of brats, which all had unqiue flavors. If you want to try the different brats, this is a good platter to try. However, I wasn’t thoroughly impressed with them. I would probably prefer them charbroiled for a better flavor. Overall, good vibe and hangout place if you need a few beers after a long day of work.

I can’t afford whisky every time I go out, even though it’s on the expense account. When I want to give the man pictured on my green credit card a break and change up my drink, no better place to go than an old fashioned beer hall. And yes it’s old. Or it’s portrayed to be old, crusty, and full of that old world charm. You know what… it works on me. It’s the type of place where big groups from the office come and down liters of very very good beer, to the point where they forget who they are with and start cursing at the boss. Yes, it’s that type of fun, but order more than you need — service can be a bit slow due to the popularity.

Came here for team happy hour on a Monday at around 3PM. There was lots of seating but was filling up once it was around 5PM. Ordered the Moscow mule which was alright. It didn’t come in the copper mug though. Order both tots. The regular tots was way too salty for me. The other one with cheese and jalapeño was a lot better imo.

Looking for a place to watch the Warriors-Spurs game, not expecting to find such a convenient location! When you walk in, it has a nice, cool, rustic feel to the place. We just plopped ourselves down at one of the long tables in front of the projector screen. Food was awesome, drinks were awesome-er. My friend was excited that they had the Paulaner, and I was excited to try The Financial. Man, that drink was strong. That little drink packed quite the punch! Our table got the pretzel knots, tater tots, and wings to share. I didn’t try the tater tots, but my guess is that they were pretty good, considered my two friends finished the whole thing. Pretzel knots were hot and delicious, just the way I like them. Wings had a nice, sort-of-sweet/sort-of-tangy flavor, along with a little spice. I think I could’ve finished that entire plate by myself. Service was awesome. Our waitress was very attentive throughout the evening. Although Warriors ultimately lost, we still had a wonderful evening with our drinks and bar bites.

Saver yourself the trip… To Germany, come here instead! Since the remodel, it is much more Bistro than Bizmark, and thats a good thing. The old atmosphere would likely make you imagine rodents in the kitchen & somone out back scraping the mould of a huge block of bland germanic cheese(but you wouldnt leave because it was an ‘experience’)! Besides the food was likely the same in the real Germany, and you only came for beer anyway. Now the atmosphere is more Mercedes Headquarters, Deutche Bank managemnet dining room… Well maybe a lot warmer than those. Point is its been remodled beautifully. The huge internal space now feels roomy — as opposed to barn-like. The vibe is modern, and welcoming — as opposed to fascinating, like a Napoleon Dynamite set scene. All that said, they did manage to keep, and incorporate into the new look/feel, the old wall paintings. All in all the remodle is pretty fab for this space. The menu has undergone a similarly satisfactory renovation. The mixed pretzels starter may be heavy on starches(and likely more gluten passing into your system than german troops went back into the Saarland) but this is essentially a comfort food menu– so get over it. The tastes of the breads and the mustard & butter condiments was heavenly.(For a moment I even stopped hating Angela Merkel!) The tone of hearty & comforting was set and continued throughout a substantial lunch. Service was great at the door and ok at the table. All in all a very enjoyable place for lunch, especially if you can sleep under your desk in Embarcadero IV afterwards.(I want to see how the Oompha bands & busty maiden dancing works in this new refashioned setting. The guy on the door assured me it was still fun — and I believe him.). I look forward to being back sometime soon: — but not on St Patricks day, when I think Germany gets invaded by Ireland and no one is sober enough to sign any peace treaty shit for days! Go, eat drink & be Gerry! Its worth the 7 minute flight!

It’s a really nice place and very conveniently located in SF downtown. It’s pretty busy in evening and weekends but you can get a seat after looking here and there. The ambience is very chic and I loved the rustic furnitures. According to the menu the place got established in 1838 which is pretty old. Coming to the booze and food, they do have variety of beers(can’t comment not a beer person) but by the looks of people around it seems they were liking it a lot. I loved their appetizers though you won’t find a very large variety but what is there is sufficient to satiate you. We ordered pretzel and kartoffel tots both were amazing. Just loved it. It’s a nice place to hangout after work.

We went for dinner with a group of six. It was my second time at the restaurant and probably my worst dining experience in years in San Francisco. The spätzle was visibly burnt. We sent it back only for them to bring out a replacement that was so salty we could barely finish it. The tots were bland and unoriginal. The service was unfriendly and absent. The only redeeming factor was the beer.

Bad ‘German’ food and unfriendly service. They don’t seat you, so as a group of 6 we had to linger over tables to swoop in to get seats together. The service was unfriendly bordering on rude, the food took a long time to come out, and when it did, simple dishes like spätzle were so burned we had to send it back. The second dish of spätzle was so salty it just tasted like popcorn. Worst German food I’ve ever had. My husband’s family is German(aunt owns and operates restaurants and breweries in Germany) and this food is terrible. Go to Suppenkuche in Hayes Valley if you want more authentic and delicious food and better service.

I think this place is beautiful. Ample seating, very professional waitstaff. I went planning to carb-load: potato pancakes(ok, minimalist, but served with a really good salad), pretzels(disappointing) and spaetzel(fine, nothing to get excited about). My colleague got a frankfurter, which looked gross to me, but which she enjoyed. Mustard was a highlight. I’m grateful for German food in a good location, though it’s not the best you’ll ever have.

Quick Review: One of my favorite happy hour spots in the FIDI, great beers and loaded tots. I’ve grown to appreciate the art of beer, especially hef. in the boot size. Food & Drink All different types of beer on tap with multiple sizes. Prices are not super cheap but not expensive. Great potato options! I suggest the loaded tots and potato pancakes. My coworkers and I also ordered a sausage platter, some were good but others were not my preference. The platter was also a little pricey too. Ambiance I’ve never been to Germany but a few people in our group said it was a pretty good attempt of a replica. They had older men(late 50s) come and perform on a Friday night in authentic gear. It was pretty cool. Service Option to go to the bar or have a server come to your table. Overall they are pretty fast and going to the bar wasn’t a hassle.

The revamp is a job well done. Cozy traditional German bar atmosphere with a modern twist. They have a nicely curated collection of traditional beer steins. We walked in without a reservation and the hostess told us it would be a 10 minute wait. She gave us ZERO confidence, that she would come find us. We took a seat at the bar, and in fact she NEVER came back to offer us a table, so we eat at the bar.
The beer is great. Bar tending staff has zero personality. I’m looking at you deep voiced black dude. Food taste old and dry. Not worth a return visit.

REUBENREUBENREUBEN! Came here with my boss for lunch since he always craves German food. I really like the vibe here, it has a bunch of long tables and seats, very casual and comfortable. Recommend this place for hang outs and team outings! I tried their Rebuen sandwich, it was hot and juicy, it also came along some sea salted chips. Portion size was reasonable, this place is more towards the pricey side, but then again you are in Fidi, so what isn’t over priced? I would definitely come back here for happy hour, I am intrigued by all the appetizer pictures I see here :)

This is one of the few German restaurants in San Francisco and it’s located in the Financial District. You would probably think a dining setting like Schroeder’s would be overpriced — given its beautiful art-lined walls and atmospheric lighting – but the price was, overall, very reasonable. Let’s start off with the restaurant’s atmosphere and décor. The place is modern and cozy, in that the beautiful wood tables and top-notch mise-en-scene is paired with the familiar appeal of a stereotypical European restaurant, with its huge murals, heraldic shields and stuffed deer heads. Case in point, my favorite part of the interior: the big circular light fixtures with warm toned light-bulbs that emulate medieval chandeliers. I also love the long dining tables – another updated European concept – that provide a good hangout spot for a big group or party. If you want to reserve a table for a big party, you can call in ahead of time, and they will send you a form to fill out details. Your credit card is needed to hold the reservation in case you don’t show up. They have private party option available as well, but there is food and beverages minimum. P. S. They are fast with emails for any inquiries. Drink! I got Pur Coincidence Cocktail $ 12(Pur pear liqueur, pur elderflower liqueur, scrappy’s habanero bitters, and lime). Not bad, though I really need to mention that the bitters in this drink burned their way down my throat with every sip. Not that that’s a bad thing. Food! Smothered Tots(5⁄5) $ 14, definitely recommend! I get amazed when chefs can make something common like potatoes into a great dish. It was crispy, flavorful and colorful! Roasted Bone Marrow(5⁄5) $ 15. This was my first time trying bone marrow, and I was not disappointed! Rich fat and juicy jelly-like marrow paste; pairing with the warm toast, great! Smoked Chicken Wurst(4⁄5). Delicious! Meaty with just the right amount of fat, not too oily. If you do want to try the wursts, you should get two instead of one. 1 for $ 18, 2 for $ 23. Might as well. Kraut Burger(4⁄5) $ 15. The only thing I have to complain about the burger would probably be the house made buns. The bun was a little too dry and hard, but the meat, however, was very juicy and cooked to perfection. The sauces that came with the burger were also great! Schweinshaxe(Ham hocks)(1⁄5) $ 22. I was actually really excited to try this because I’ve had German ham hocks a while ago in Europe, but it turned out to be nothing I expected. The ham hock tasted just like the leftover lean pork in a broth stock. It had little to no flavor. The lentils might have made it worse. The combination is essentially baby food. Mushy. Overall service was good. I think the waitress can do a little better with the ordering. Bottom line is Schroeder’s worth visiting again.

Downright fun. Ever think it’d be awesome to have an endless table where you and 12 of your friends can merrily sit together and order liters or flights(either German or USA) of beer? Come here! And if you’re lucky, it’ll be a live music night like there was at their Octoberfest! I danced as much as I drank, and mingled with other jolly tables. Great German food, German beer(das boot!), and German everything. I’ve been to Germany for about 4 – 5 days and it really does due justice(in downtown SF of all packed places) to the huge ‘hofrabahaus’ dining halls that fit 1,000 people+. The bratwurst are all different and tasty. The various sliders are great. They even have tater tots, win! The old fashion drinks, das boot beers, and service are amazing. Highly recommended for a fun German themed outting for drinks/food/hangout out with friends. Plus tons of TV to watch sports.

Wunderbares Essen und ein amaziang Atmosphäre. It’s like a dining hall straight of out of Beowulf. It’s very long with the bar in front and the most of the tables in the back. It has a modern ancient feeling, but does that even make any sense? I came here with a large group and I think we ate everything on menu including sharing a beer filled Das Boot. Basically a giant glass boot filled with German beer. Definitely try this when you’re here, even if your Nana is joining you for dinner. When at Schroeder’s you must try the Smothered Tots made with beef jus, horseradish, melted cheddar, and pickled peppers. This is like mutant cousin of carne asada fries, the good mutant cousin, not the one that gets locked in the basement and shunned from society. Drunk, high or sober these will taste amazing. Pork Cracklins — House made Pork Rinds with pickles, and spicy mustard. Yes, these are addicting and you will order a second round. The Sauerbraten is ridiculous; braised beef, red cabbage, bacon, grapes and potato dumplings. Just think German styled Short Ribs. Insanely tender and the potato dumplings are amazing! BOARDS: Pretzel. I know this sounds ridiculous, but the pretzels here are like knotted balls of salty, spicy awesomeness and they come with a smoked butter and mustard. So good! The Sausage board was also very good, it’s comes with four different types of sausage that you get to choose. Everything is made in-house and is delicious. I ate and drank plenty more while I was here, but honestly it’s just making me hungry for some Schoeder’s and I can’t tame that craving while Vegas. Essen alle Lebensmittel!

Headed to Schroeder’s upon rumor of currywurst being on the menu — and sadly the seasonal menu’s days were numbered, so had to try some other things instead. The flavors are quite good here. My favorite dish was the grilled pole beans with radish, sunflower seeds, preserved lemon & crispy pig ears! The smoked chicken wurst came with tasty sides of mashed potatoes, sauerkraut & mustard. Favorite drink so far: grüné tal(laphroaig scotch single malt 10 yr, black bottle blended scotch, escorial liquor, lime & bittercube bolivian bitters).

I’ve never loved the food at Schroeder’s, but I’ve always thought it was pretty tasty. Up until my lunch today, I’d have given them 4 stars but I really was not very impressed with my bratwurst and Spatzle. Both left plenty to be desired. The bratwurst was not particularly well cooked and seriously under-seasoned, so much so that I found it hard to swallow. Spatzle, as far as I’m aware, shouldn’t be dried out nuggets of carbs. I’m sorry, Shroeder’s, but I can only give you 3 stars.

Come here for the beer. Don’t come here for the food or the cocktails. I was super excited to try the Sichuan Summer — ever since I went to Chicago’s Broken Shaker, I have been fiending for more drinks that involve Sichuan peppercorn. I ordered it… took three sips, and left the rest of the $ 12 cocktail there — albeit there wasn’t much left because it’s a rather small cocktail. It tastes very sweet(no spice to it) — kind of like mildly alcoholic koolaid, so if that’s your thing, go forth and prosper. But what was criminal was the jäger schnitzel. It came out and was beautifully plated. I dug in. Unfortunately, it was lukewarm(not piping hot) and extremely thin(all breading, no piggie). It might have been delicious about 10 minutes ago but had been clearly sitting around for a while. Perhaps this is service’s fault. I’ll give it credit though; the mushrooms and kugel surrounding the meat was delicious. Also had pickled veggies and the potato pancakes(which WERE hot and were pretty darn good).

What a gorgeous venue! It actually is pretty big inside — it goes really go far back. I came here for a happy hour, so I only got to try a drink and not the food. The Kleine Blumchen(translation: small flower) is a beautiful drink but definitely tastes very strongly of tea(and is a bit bitter). Most of their cocktails are around $ 14, but it’s worth it because of the quality and presentation.

Yay! I’m so glad that I finally got to eat here. I am a huge fan of German food and I wasn’t disappointed. I came here with 3 girl friends and we ordered a smörgåsbord of apps and split the sausage platter. We had the loaded tots, the crab, the beets, spatzel, and pretzel knots. The crab was great, but a small portion. The beets I would skip — pretty pointless to order roasted beets for $ 10+. The loaded tots are wonderful and so satisfying. The pretzel knots are also a skip — they should have offered it with some sort of cheese sauce instead of just butter and mustard. The standout was the spatzel, it had bacon bits and cauliflower. The sausage platter had 4 different types of sausages. I don’t remember which was which, but we enjoyed it. Wish they gave us more sourkrout, though. The pickled veggies that came with the plate was also awesome. I hope to come back and try more of their entrees.
