Sips n Sews is owned by Tammy, who is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful. Jess, her assistant, is friendly and thoughtful. The bright, large site is equipped perfectly for quilt making. Interfacing and notions are well-stocked and complimentary. They have everything you need for a great dressmaking experience except an old-fashioned ironing board because of liability issues. Unfortunately, easily pressing my fashion projects’ seams as I go along is my favorite part. Otherwise I would give Sips n Sews five stars.

I love this place, I come here as often as I can to learn to sew, start new sewing projects, and to work on fixing and modifying my clothes. I didn’t know how to sew when I signed up; I had tried to take a class at City College a few years ago, but I had given up because I felt it was too difficult and there were no machines available for everyone to use. Though I always had a desire inside to try again, and so one day as I was walking back to the car from a coffee shop on Polk Street, I saw this shop. It looked like they were selling things, and I decided to step in to take a look, and I was surprised that it was a sewing studio. Jess showed me around the studio, and I got a brochure. I had to go on a trip, but when I came back the next week, I signed up, and I had my first lesson, we did a reversible tote bag. Tammy made it seem so simple, and easy, that I lost my fear of not being able to learn to sew. They offer different classes on their calendar every week. I made a reversible tote bag, placemats with napkins holders, a mug coaster, a makeup bag, a wall hanger, a maxi skirt, and a pair of pj shorts. I’m looking forward to the next classes, though I’m working on projects myself with Tammy’s and Jess’ help, and I’ve also been fixing my clothes(the length, and modifying things to my liking). I really recommend this place also for the atmosphere, Tammy and Jess are very nice, and there are also other very friendly members. The price for the monthly membership is also extremely attractive, compared to another place that charges $ 45+ for simple single lessons, this place only charges $ 40 a month for students, and you can participate in any class that they offer for members for free with your membership. I love this place!!!

Finally a place to work and I don’t mean another café with wifi and power outlets. There are enough coffee shops around to accommodate techies, finally a place for arts and crafts! I’m paying a little more than a dollar a day for access to sewing machines, servers, cutting tables, cutting mat, dress forms, notions(elastic, buttons, interfacing, thread…), iron, steamer, library of books and professional help for advanced sewing projects. This place is spacious and welcoming, just bring your project and fabric and you are ready to go. It’s so good that I almost didn’t want to tell other people to avoid overcrowding it.

I make a lot of cosplay costumes and Sips N Sews has been a miracle for me. I am a student at USF and there is absolutely no room for me to get the costumes I need done. I heard about this on Facebook and decided to come by. The studio is huge and the student membership prices are ridiculously affordable. Also free tea with membership!
