Beautiful and talented — Suzanne and Peter, sole mates. Their designs are both functional and beautiful. They problem-solve like the wizard and magician they are. Their knowledge of shoe making, history and how feet work is an education and each time I leave, my IQ jumps a point or two. Kind, smart, generous and wise, if they were written up in the NY Times, people from the East Coast would be flocking. …so let’s keep them our little secret, shall we???

I love my shoes from Suzanne George. They fit perfectly. With my foot surgery and heel issues, she correctly fit my feet and designed a shoe that is all mine. I really like the neighborhood she is in as well because I can still find street parking.

Make sure you make an appointment. I showed up on a Saturday and the door was locked and couldn’t get my shoes made! I made a special trip up to San Francisco, and it would have been helpful to know that it is by appointment only

Both Suzanne and her partners in this shop are all«old World» trained. Everything is painstakingly done by hand. They not only do bespoke shoes for fashion, but also for people with specific orthopedic needs. This is the kind of craftsmanship we need to support before it all disappears to a factory in China that pumps out cheap crap that we tolerate because it’s so inexpensive– get some real shoes!

Craftsmanship is a lost art. Appreciation for it… near extinction(but that’s a rant for another day). Luckily, old world attention, care and quality can be found here. Suzanne crafts custom-made(for your specific foot) shoes from her selection of fine materials at this easy-to-miss storefront on the end of Church Street. Every detail in her shop is defined by a discerning eye and delicate touch from the shoes to the stitching, right down to the beautiful letterpress business cards. She is very approachable and down to earth(with a sense of whimsy about her). A long while back, we exchanged random chitchat about Italy and London’s Cordwainer’s Technical College, whose esteemed former graduates include Jimmy Choo, Vivienne Westwood, and Patrick Cox.(For a split second during college I humored the idea of going to a school for shoemaking and even went to the campus for a visit, having seen old-fashioned cobblers on my travels around the ponds. Her shoe styles are feminine and a nice amount of quirky. While not my personal taste, I really love her work and they could very easily be just right for someone. The prices are in upwards of the high C notes, so they aren’t for every pocketbook. However, you can always save up. Sometimes having Less(material goods, but nice ones) is More.
