I came in for a casual sushi dinner and was absolutely blown away! The fish is incredibly fresh and it is not too crowded considering the small space. The Spunk Roll is delicious — a little spicy and refreshing because of the lemon. The Eggplant Special is also a fantastic appetizer. Overall, I was extremely satisfied and pleased with this neighborhood spot!

The food has been good so far but, small portions and over priced… The waitresses are ok but it’s been over 20 – 30 minutes for our sushi rolls… They are overwhelmed.

Not a place for vegetarian. Over priced vegetarian selection. Order asparagus, 3 stripes for $ 6! Salad just handful of mixed spring green with a few slides of cucumber for $ 7! Sorry, will not be back.

Takara has friendly and attentive staff in a comfortable and cool looking restaurant. The inside has two levels — the floor has tables by the front windows and the raised level up the steps opens up to a larger dining area. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, red dragon roll, and miso soup. The rolls were just okay. The tuna didn’t have much flavor. The rice was cooked well however. The price point for the sushi was pretty average for San Francisco standards. I would give Takara another shot and try something different next time.

Pretty pricey but delicious. I love that they have good vegetarian sushi options. It was very creative in flavor. Highly recommend it. 1. Veggie Dragon Roll(My favorite) 2. Veggie Gyoza 3. Veggie Joseph Mango Soy(Very creative and unique. It has Asparagus and mango) Con: 1. They don’t update their website or Unilocal when they are closed due to some holidays. So please call them to make sure they are open.

Food(4⁄5): I shared the snow roll and the chef’s sashimi with a friend. Snow roll has tempura shrimp and unagi inside, and crab, tobiko, and unagi sauce on the outside. Great combination of textures and flavors! The roll was pretty big, too. The chef’s sashimi came with 3 slices each of 6 types of fish(tuna, salmon, scallop, walu, squid(?), and hamachi). Tasted pretty fresh, but the slices were really small. Our other friend got the tempura udon, which came with a sizable portion of shrimp and veggie tempura. His food looked really good — I wished I ordered that! Service(5⁄5): Free edamame! Portions are really tiny though and no refills. We called in fifteen minutes before arriving and they were nice enough to hold a table for us. Servers were attentive and took care of us! Value(4⁄5): Udon at ~$ 11 is prob the most value on the menu, but rolls($ 6 – 14) aren’t bad either. The chef’s sashimi was $ 35 for 18 smallish pieces, which is okay too.

Good Sushi. Takara special($ 26) was excellent. Chicken udon($ 10.95)) was good and filling. Salmon rolls were fresh and tasty. Overall good food.

This place isn’t bad… but I probably wouldn’t return. The prices are reasonable… and rightly so as the sushi tastes like anything I could pick up at a local market. The problems with Takara is the way it’s so painfully… ordinary. There’s literally nothing about it that makes you want to go running back after you’re done. Same typical dishes on the menu, same boring taste of every other California roll you’ve had dozens of times before… basically uninspiring. If you’re looking for affordable sushi that you also won’t remember soon after… this is the place for you!

A flag went up when I walked up to the counter to pick up my to-go order and the fish case looked like a total mess. The chirashi I ordered looked equally disastrous. The fish was not cut uniformly and some were hacked up. Presentation is integral to sushi, even with to-go orders. I have gotten chirashi to go from at least a dozen places. This one looked like someone took random end pieces, folded them up and crammed them into a box. Perhaps it was a good thing that the portion was cheap(price certainly was not) because the quality was low. There were two generous pieces of foul tasting fake crab. Not going back for more.

Decent sushi but not the best or worst, not authentic Japanese place, a little bit sloppy, our sushi rolls were falling apart once picking them up, we sat at the sushi bar and saw the sushi being made, one gross thing we found in our sushi is a piece of hair… gross :$ Keep that wallet and go somewhere else

Goodness… This place is SO super yummy. I would recommend going during happy hour, there are TONS of options on there and they are all super yummy with large portions. The thing that sucks about living in seattle is there are little to no competitive happy hours, here in San Fran however… WOW! such good price for a lot of food that was all quite tasty. Disclaimer: my wife and I kinda like«americanized» saucy-ish sushi, and this definitely tickled our fancys… TL;DR yum. cheap. lots.

Great neighborhood sushi spot that never disappoints. Their specials are always on point and we love all their rolls. The fish tastes fresh and everything is prepared to perfection. Service is great we always ask what they like on the menu and they bring us the most incredible dishes! Hiramasa on Salt Block is a show stopper!

I don’t eat fish so I may not be the best person to review a sushi place– but the veggie fish options were super good(got the avocado maki and sweet potato tempura roll). The fish dishes looked amazing and seemed super inventive. They were also huge! I will definitely come back.

It’s a very good sushi restaurant. One day I decided to change my rainbow roll(yes, I just love the rainbow roll) for a Salmon Tasting that was listed on the specials. Now I can’t help it but order it every time! 5 different salmons, all so different from one another and at the same time all so rich. I would also recommend the Shrimp Tempura. Sushi is not consistent, it relays on the sushi-man of the day, I wasn’t disappointed, but I know there are better days than others… The ambiance is nice, and the staff really friendly.

SF roll, chicken skins & oyster shooter… 2nd visit on our sushi hopping. Better than the 1st. The SFROLL was fantastic, the chicken skins reminded me of pork rinds or cracklin, but the condiment with it was superb, something wasabi something… And, the oyster shooter was wonderful(if you like oysters & raw egg). Weds evening @ 8pm we got right in & service was so nice & prompt. Bathrooms were clean too. *draught note: they provide water w/o request & keep refilling even after you say no more. Since service is so prompt, the wait won’t be long do give it a try.

Hmm… I have no idea why this place is rated with 4-star. After a delivery eating experience I would say 2-star is maximum. So, I ordered delivery through doordash and the expected delivery time was 7:57pm. At 7:12pm restaurant confirmed the order and begun to prepare the food, and the food wasn’t be able to pick up until 8:16pm and finally got our food at 8:24pm. Almost an 30-min delay. Okay let me assume it is not the restaurant’s problem but rather the delivery service itself; but the food was mediocre. Tonkatsu: C. Okay, probably delivery of fried food was not a smart idea(foiled paper was used and a hole was cut at the lid preventing damping fried food with moisture), but it couldn’t have been that bad? Very hard to chew. Moreover, some cheese was added in the middle of each piece of tonkatsu, the combination was super weird and it did not taste good at all. Eggplant: B-. It was some small pieces of eggplant topped with shrimp and scallop. Not sure the appropriate temperature but both the eggplant and seafood was cold. The eggplant barely had taste in it. Spicy Tuna Roll: B. Decent, spicy tuna was with okay freshness. X-Roll: B-. It’s some salmon+tuna-topped roll with mayo. Fish freshness was average. The mayo did not do the job to enhance or add an interesting taste to the roll. Hamachi Sushi: B+. The hamachi was considered fresh. But the sushi as a whole was not impressive. Cold rice. Salmon Sushi: B-. The salmon was not fresh at all. Don’t have much to say about it. Portion of each dish was small. Yet it turned out to be ~$ 49+tax total. A very unsatisfying meal. Won’t go back again, not delivery nor dine-in.

Even though I had a passing curiosity about its previous identity as an intimate Asian fusion restaurant, I never made it here when Sumi ran this spot. It looked attractive, but I heard mixed notices about the food. When she retired six years ago, it completely fell off my radar, and when it changed names, it might as well have entered the witness protection program. Then one night, I was at Curry Boyz right across the street and glanced over. Suddenly it looked inviting to me. It only took ten years. Par for the course for me. Anyway, Jamie W. and I finally made it here after checking out the new rainbow crosswalks at 18th and Castro. They just opened for the evening, so they were just setting up for dinner. Naming the place Takara didn’t help me remember me since it’s a pretty common Japanese name. There’s even a restaurant in J-Town with the same name. It’s kinda like naming a place Sam’s. Anyhow, it’s mainly sushi though they have standard Japanese fare if you prefer something that’s been near a stove. Our meal began with a $ 5.95 plate of Gyoza which were pretty well grilled and provided a satisfying start(photo: ). We segued into a $ 4.95 plate of Grilled Eggplant slices sprinkled with chopped scallions and accompanied by a ponzu dipping sauce(photo: ). Good, not mushy though a tad lukewarm. The sight of Ankimo on a menu always makes me excited like a little girl wearing her first training bra. So for $ 8.50, a plateful was in order, and it was just as fresh a piece of monkfish liver as I could hope for, nicely sliced and also accompanied by ponzu sauce(photo: ). That was gone so quickly I’m surprised Jamie still has fingers. Then our main sushi order arrived on one plate. To accommodate Jamie’s taste, we had the $ 5.95 King California Roll which contains real versus imitation crab, a worthwhile dollar surcharge for the real thing(photo: ). Nothing really to say about the roll except that it was put together as expected and tasted fine for a California roll, I suppose. I ordered the $ 12.95 X-Roll, an elaborate creation with yellowtail, avocado, tuna and salmon, drizzled with an aioli-like spicy sauce and topped with tobiko(photo: ). It was a bit like a rainbow roll with mayo. Not a bad thing if you ask me. The last was the $ 14 O-Toro Nigiri, fatty tuna wrapped around rice with tiny shrimp in another sauce(photo: ). That was quite good but I was finding it hard to justify the price in my head, just my belly. They do sushi well here, and it’s well worth a try if you’re in the mood. FOOD — 4 stars… sushi well executed… and they have ankimo… score! AMBIANCE — 3.5 stars… tiny spot crowds easily so come earlier to avoid claustrophobia SERVICE — 3.5 stars… attentive enough but a bit aloof TOTAL — 4 stars… probably your best sushi option in the Castro
