Adorable little coffee shop with amazing coffee and fresh pastries. This place is little and quiet if you’re lucky enough to score one of the few inside tables. They are tables outside for sidewalk searing which is nice for people watching.

Good vibe. Being a Starbucks girl I didn’t know really what to order. So I got an ice coffee and asked for vanilla to be put in for me with some room for cream. I didn’t get my vanilla. So I had to use splenda to sweeten it which isn’t that good. The tables were really unique. They table tops had coffee beans under the glass top. Pretty cool.

Came here for a quick business meeting with a colleague. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the size of this location is very cozy, compared to the 9th Ave. location. Seating is more conversation oriented than for working, although there is free wifi. The reason for my 3 star rating is the coffee. I consider myself a coffee tasting hobbyist and wasn’t at all satisfied with the Roasters Blend drip coffee. You’ll experience a roasted and burnt flavor profile that lines up better with a french roast. But here, it went one step beyond a french roast with an overpowering taste that’s best described as ashy and acrid, slightly skunky. It had a very heavy body and coating. The ending left a dirty aftertaste. And there was a notable amount sludge that I would only expect from French Press style brewing. Some people prefer this type of taste. I am not one of them. The closest I can compare it to is to the packaged and pre-ground French Roast Classic coffee from Peerless Coffee. I feel terrible writing this review because I absolutely want to support local roasters. But there’s a problem here between the over-roasting and the under-brewing that left me disappointed. However, I’ll be back to try a different roast next time. Look for an updated review soon!

Really great sense of community here. There are a lot of regulars, many of whom the barista knows by name. They have organic and non-organic fresh roasted beans, Semifreddi’s fresh baked goods and a selection of teas. The only downsides I can think of is that it closes at 6pm(but is open at 6am, 7am on Sundays), and only has to-go cups; otherwise, 5 stars from me.

Ethiopian! I was with a Nicaraguan guy having a coffee break here. He was telling me about how bad the Sandinistas, made a deal with Chinese to built canal, but did not work because local Nicaraguan Indians don’t want to deal with them. He also told me that coffee that Nicaraguan has is very very strong. He almost having a heart attack after drinking the coffee. Btw, I forgot to ask him about is there any Chinatown in Nicaragua. A quiet and small spot for some good caffeine. They also have a good variety of pastries and biscotti. I like to support local small business like this!

I set out late that morning having squared off against the dense fog that threatened to keep me indoors. Marching deliberately down the hill, I came at first slowly upon the other adventurers. I like to imagine that our shared smiles indicate a kind of acknowledgement: «it is we who brave this wilderness.» The inner sunset has a lovely crunching quality to the cement, which is peppered with sand from the underlying slope and soil from the small, square plots set aside for a line of trees. I arrived at a clearing in the fog set, as if by magic, at the corner of 7th and Irving where my usual haunt was winding down for the morning. The rush of people headed to work had thinned, leaving a single seat by the window ready for my intended task. I was writing a letter, you see. «Rachel, I will have a small chai please»(I was feeling exotic). Rachel was busy leading the newest employees in a whirl of activity and steamed milk. She always manages to be both busy and accommodating – a nice quality in a coffee shop if you ask me. Bustling but comfortable. Perfect for my letter. I sat down: «My dearest Emmalee, today my adventure began with a hazy wandering and a spiced chai. How ever shall I top it in the coming hours?»

I’ve been here before Unilocal was created and revisited last week since a local storefront was closed. The taste was exactly the same as I had remembered it before my coffee-tized palate could recognize a good roast. Ordered a cappuccino — coffee was burnt and they just put a spoonful of frothed milk on top. Would not return though they have some committed regulars. Only upside is very efficient service.

The Beanery definitely has their regulars and then the random visitors… me being part of the second group. The baristas were friendly enough, but I was literally table jacked by a guy who walked in after me. He threw his newspaper down on the table I sat at like he owned the place and then sat down. My friend and I kind of just looked at each other dumbfoundedly before migrating to one of their other 4 tables. I ordered an Americano… and it was just alright. Given that Americanos are either prepared with espresso poured into hot water(or vice versa), I did expect the flavor to be tempered a bit… but overall it was just watery. Hmm.

I live and work near this place so I go almost daily. The Roaster’s Blend is good and the staff are excellent. In particular, I want to thank Martin, one of the workers here, who helped me recover an important notebook with my entire life’s schedule in it that I lost on MUNI. I had come into the shop right after getting off the N Judah and immediately realized I had left it on the train. When I freaked out, Martin volunteered to take his motorcycle and chase after the train to look for it. I really didn’t think he would be able to find it, but I thought it was sweet of him to make the effort. In fact, he actually did find it and return it to me. Martin is my hero! He deserves a raise for going above and beyond the call of duty… I think he was getting off his shift at the time so he was off work and did me a major favor which was kind and generous…

Located right on the corner of 7th Ave and Irving St, the storefront is facing Irving St with a couple of small tables outside. Forewarning, this area is notorious for difficulty in finding parking. We walked by because we desperately needed caffeine and wanted some place to hang out while we waited for our table at San Tung. A fairly small coffee shop with dim lighting inside, there’s a beautiful coffee roasting machine proudly displayed called the San Franciscan. With only about 5 tables inside(with very cool tabletops that have beans glued underneath a pane of glass), not the best place for a group of people to hang out over a warm drink. One unisex bathroom available. If you’re interested in tea, they use Stash Teas. Next to the register is a glass display where a selection of pastries are also available. Their coffee is all fair trade as well. Other cafes call the same drink as a red eye, the turbo, the sludge cup, or a shot in the dark. I ordered a Single Mocha. It was very frothy at the top and had enough sweetness and cocoa flavor where I didn’t need to add any type of sweetener. My friend ordered a double cappuccino and his cup’s froth looked like fresh snow. It was very amusing. The caffeine didn’t seem very strong, but we both still enjoyed our cup. Service was decent. Answered my question. Not rude but not really friendly either. Wouldn’t go out of my way to come here but wouldn’t mind stopping by if I’m in the area and needed a caffeine fix.

The west is the best, when it comes to coffee, right? We have Starbucks, Peets, Coffee People, Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Philz, Equator, and more every month. Not too many places stay small and local, though, roasting in small batches and concerned with keeping quality high and prices low. Must be tempting to expand, make more money and get everyone talking about how great you are, even though you are no longer as good as your reputation would warrant. That’s why I love, love, love the Beanery, and this location best of all. If you thought dark roast had to be bitter, try the French Roast here. It’s not burned or astringent at all, just really, really rich and smooth and full of about a million subtle flavors. You can enjoy a good cup of hot deliciousness here or take home a pound and drink it all morning, like I do. Thank me now or thank me later. You’re welcome. And you know how some places fake that friendly environment? Asking your name only to get your order out faster, and engaging in idiotic small talk like they really, really like you. But when you come back and get a refill, they start all over — same idiotic small talk, same conversation. You weren’t special. Here, it’s different. I’ll go every week for a while, and then go out of town for months. When I return, Heather remembers not only my name, but my preferred, picky blend, and what grind I get. I’m not talkative, but she’s so pleasant and calm that she makes me feel comfortable. Nothing fake about her, the coffee, any of it. To me, this location has the best vibe(less tourists, more UCSF interns studying, quiet yet not too full or too empty). This is what a coffee shop should be, and is. Nothing fake about it.

small tables. cramped seating space. can’t spread out and study(to be fair this i my main criteria for a coffee shop and it might not be yours) Coffee is fine. Staff are nice. Since it’s such a small space and it’s in the inner sunset, it’s ice cold to sit in there when they leave the door open. better order your drink extra hot!

Beanery is a good ol friendly neighborhood joint for a coffee. The coffee and staff are pretty good! I’m a fan of the soy mocha latte($ 3.45 for a small single shot) or the iced drinks ~$ 4. The price is about right for coffee — on par with chains like Starbucks and Peet’s. The great vibe from the staff and decent coffee can’t take away from the small space of Beanery. It’s not the best place to bring a book and read because there really isn’t much space at all. You get a lot of hustle and bustle of people running in and out. So if you’re looking for a coffee house to work in, this isn’t your best choice. Also — they don’t take card, which can be kind of tough in our plastic world.

Tried the latte here and was disappointed. Maybe I expected too much after reading the great reviews about The Beanery, but I thought it was weak and lacked any depth of flavor. Didn’t taste much different from what I make at home, which is basically brewed coffee with some milk added — it’s not even espresso! Basically, I didn’t feel it was worth my money. Service was chilly. Maybe because I’m only a college student? Or Asian? Maybe they were just having a bad day. Nevertheless, I didn’t feel very welcome here. There were a few small tables inside and outside. I liked the tables — sheets of glass with beans under them — but I don’t think I’d want to sit there for very long. At most, grab n’ go.

Stopped in for an afternoon coffee and some writing time while I was in SF. This place fills the bill; great coffee, good baristas, a decent selection of treats to go along with your cup, and friendly service. Oh yeah and its near Golden Gate park too. What’s not to love?

Love this place. The coffee beans are the real deal. Every once in awhile I like some pansy ass coffee from Ritual/Four Barrel but if you want a REAL cup of coffee, get their Mocha Java beans. There is a chocolate flavor in there that just gives it an extra richness. We also just got the organic Guatemalan beans and they are also fantastic. Joe is the nicest guy and Rachel is a killer barista. These guys make the best cappuccinos I have ever had. Creamy delicious foam piled high. Love you guys!

Cute little coffee stop. Being immediately immersed in the fine aromas here when you walk in is a great feeling. Chairs and tables all alongside the wall in here will be seating happy and satisfied customers. Many are just enjoying that day and reading newspapers, others are catching up, others are studying, but whatever you are doing in a coffee shop, the Beanery is the perfect place to do it. Hot chocolate and coffee come out in large mugs and they have a fun assortment of bakery goods to offer. Being on the corner of 9th street is great for people watching, too! It’s one of those places that leave an impression.
